Mine too. The band means a lot to me. Great guys, they were the best live and I got to meet all of them several times and they are all extremely nice people.
Being totally honest, my sadness at this band's split has never gone away. Still miss them so much...... every....single....fuckin....day :( :( But, REMembering EVERY moment.
One of the most underrated REM songs. So much power. So miuch creativity. So much talent. The words, music and composure of the band comes together so well on this song.
Thank you R.E.M for all the fantastic songs, for being there in tough times. I could go on... I'm so glad I had the privilege of seeing you twice and hearing this and many other of your great songs live
I get very sad thinking I will never get to see these guys live again. They are absolutely awesome in concert. You feel every emotion while you're there and you always leave so very happy.
Hey Emilis Before the song Michael is speaking a verso to another R.E.M. song called Chorus and the Ring This is the verse: It's the poison that in measures brings Illuminating vision It's the knowing with a wink that we expect in southern women It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea. He than repeats sea and says, "And than, than"
this is my favorite rem song. i'm glad to see one of the best live renditions of this song on youtube belongs to that show in madrid. they always play great shows in spain :)
Man, I started listening to REM in the '80's on vinyl on my stereo's turntable. Stipe is a poet with lyrics and Buck and Mills fill in the silence so well it is seamless.
As a young single mother my 3 sons and i would pop my REM cassettes in the player of my Ford Escort. 1 teen 1 preteen & 1 young 7yr old. We would take road trips just to drive and listen to some of the best music ever written = REM!!! Now theyre grown with families of their own. We still agree those were some of the best days of our lives indeed!
Oh I agree with you. It's beloved in the REM community. In the music world, this song is underrated. Its such a beautiful and deep song. It needs to be played on the radio from time to time.
"This flower's scorched, this film is on, it's on a maddening loop. These clothes, these clothes don't fit us right." Some of the best lyrics ever written.
So true...His guitar work is not difficult stuff to play and in some ways its very basic but it has something special about it...and when Im out there in the audience listening live it gives me goose bumps...the whole sound of REM just runs deep.
@rchslion I feel the exact same way. There is no other band or artist that gives me the feeling of joy and emotion that R.E.M. do. I hope that someday they decide they really do miss it and do something together again. We don't have to call it a re-union.
Wow! Just blows me away every time... Michael Stipe is such a great singer, and Pete Buck really is underrated as a guitarist, because he understands what playing guitar really is about: feeling and emotion not technique and speed as a lot of other guitarists seem to believe... Great band anyway!
the solo off the road movie version of this is my favourite ever. the song is fnatastic just simple chords and fantastic lyrics that blossom into this other wordly sound that fills you to the brim. As for the issue of the topic of the song it quite widely acknowledged that the lyrics were predominantly imrpovised during the recording and stipe just had a few words on a sheet during the studie version and the original take was deemed good enough to not need rerecording
@TheRoyuk seen them countless times at different festivals all round europe !! every time amazing !! one of the greatest bands of all time !! you got good taste mate !!
Yes the guys did some work on the album after the Dublin Gigs last month. They are now on break and will resume working on the album in September or October.
I have never seen them live. I guess I have missed some chances, the closest they have been was Greece, I'm from Bulgaria. I'm sure they will tour again but if they don't come to Europe again I doubt I will ever see them live because I don't have much money to travel. I didn't want to die without seeing these geniuses on a concert. Just wanted to share with you :(
A brilliant live version of this used to be on here I dont recall where it was filmed only it starts with Stipe replying to an obvious shouted request for the song by saying " thats the one because its my favourite song ". The guitar solo on that one is excellent Does anyone recall it Michael Stipe had the blue over his face in that video as he does this one
In March I saw Peter play on stage with Robyn Hitchcock and he was doing some very impressive guitar work. Peter doesn't do enough guitar solos in R.E.M. songs I think.
By the way, not only does Michael Stipe quotes lyrics from the R.E.M. song 'Chorus and the ring' but , by repeating the word 'sea' at the end of the line, he is also subtly mixing in the lyric from the Out Of Time track 'Belong'.
Loved this song back in the day. Time to dig out 'Out of Time' again...I'd forgotten how cool that album is. Automatic and Out of Time...what a purple patch. They did cool stuff before and after that period but for me those 2 albums are a pinnacle.
Anyone know why he says the second verse of Chorus and the Ring in the beginning of the song? I know he really likes that verse but why include it here?
If you are a long time fan you would know that Michael Stipe has wore make up on stage since the beginning. He always wore eyeliner, eye shadow, glitter, he sometimes would put make up on his eyebrows, than he decided in 2003 to put a thin stripe across his head. As he said it's theater. And he just felt like having blue ears. Than on the 2004-05 tour he made the stripe a lot bigger and used blue and black make up. Just because he wanted to..
Out of time and Lifes Rich Pageant are my two faves...but I have a different sense memory attached to all REM work...there was a dark period when I was thrilled about their work but it didnt last long
I don't think it's about domestic violence, just about a relationship where the love has faded away, and also it's just about a lot of things that go wrong in our lives. But like Michael said, the song meanings are left up to the listener to figure out.
Back around the Monster tour, Stipe would say "Thank you, Peter" after this song. This song always made me sad... it's about domestic violence.... The picture it paints always tore me up. it's made me think a lot over the years.
@AUS10TEX I agree about their 2 best being Murmur and Automatic.... Peter has always joked about not being a flashy solo lead and that he only knows one solo....
@tidepoolbay I cannot get over it either. I wish they didn't break up. I knew they couldn't be a band forever but I thought they would have stayed together at least a few more years.
@CircusEnvy23 Quoting Tristan Tzara on Dadaist poetry: "The poem will resemble you. And there you are--an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd."
That's sad you never saw them live. They will not tour again because they broke up last year. Maybe someday they will decide to re-unite but as of right now it looks very unlikely. This is something most of their fans are not happy about.
I think you are wrong mr.Zimmerman. I've been listening to REM for well over 20 years, and although I don't know how to play any instrument, but I do know what intended dissonance is and I appreciate it. and I don't think the let just any hack into the rock & roll hall of fame.
@gpeddino lol you do realize that he litterarily sang some random words and phrases jotted down on a piece of paper from brainstorming. But yes, they do fit well
It's bone not boner. You may want to listen more carefully. This song is about a man breaking up with a woman. As for Michael Stipe well its no secret what his sexuality is. He's kind of bi so live with it.
peter buck CAN play solos to safe his life, he could do it even back in 1985, when he was less skilled than nowadays! just watch the rockpalast 1985 show, where he plays several fast ones..... do you play guitar yourself, mr. zimmerman?
He doesn't always wear make up. 03= orange and blue skinny stripes 04= the blue stripe got bigger 05= even bigger. The 2008 tour no make up at all. I saw six shows last year. I think he did all he wanted to do make up wise and he's more conservative now that he is older.
I don't think he needs any lessons at all. Only Neil Young plays the way he plays. Though Peter is very inspired by Neil, he has his own style and it would be silly for him to try to be someone else.
Mine too. The band means a lot to me. Great guys, they were the best live and I got to meet all of them several times and they are all extremely nice people.
No me canso de escucharlo este bello tema! Pasan los años y siento lo mismo como en ese momento ❤❤❤Los amooo!!🇦🇷🇦🇷
I love how Michael always watches Peter play guitar during this song. The song totally takes the band in a different place.
Thanks for 30 great years R.E.M.
Being totally honest, my sadness at this band's split has never gone away. Still miss them so much...... every....single....fuckin....day :( :( But, REMembering EVERY moment.
Не мога без тези велики артисти,а Майкъл е моята дрога.Прегръщам го след всяко изпълнение,макар на хиляди километри❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most underrated REM songs. So much power. So miuch creativity. So much talent. The words, music and composure of the band comes together so well on this song.
this song always gets me trough difficult times ,
Thank you R.E.M for all the fantastic songs, for being there in tough times. I could go on... I'm so glad I had the privilege of seeing you twice and hearing this and many other of your great songs live
God every time I watch thsi played live it blows me away --what a classic song. Poetry!!!
Благодаря за шедьовъра!велики хора!Свръх въздействие!!!Извисени!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ancora oggi mi vengono i brividi. Grazie!
I get very sad thinking I will never get to see these guys live again. They are absolutely awesome in concert. You feel every emotion while you're there and you always leave so very happy.

My favourite song of the band that I fell in love with in 1984 and miss like hell but at least they went out on a high...the last two albums were gems
peter buck is just amazing in the second half of the song...
this is my favorite rem song. i'm glad to see one of the best live renditions of this song on youtube belongs to that show in madrid. they always play great shows in spain :)
Never gets out of style...good god! the guitar at the end? freakin genius!

have heard it live so many times now...and it is always a magical time...
"This flower's scorched, this film is on, it's on a maddening loop. These clothes, these clothes don't fit us right."
Some of the best lyrics ever written.
I agree.
Such beauty...
Thank you, REM.
Country Feedback and Nightswimming (live on Jools Holland) are my favourite R.E.M. songs!!
What a fantastic band, how gorgeous is Michael wish they were still together
I love this song.
So true...His guitar work is not difficult stuff to play and in some ways its very basic but it has something special about it...and when Im out there in the audience listening live it gives me goose bumps...the whole sound of REM just runs deep.

Estupendo concierto!!!
I love Peter Buck. This is what makes me love R.E.M.
Wow! Just blows me away every time...

Great band anyway!
best version love it
Amo essa banda
they did an acoustic version w/Neil, probably for a Bridge school benefit show...Stipe introduced it as his 'particular favorite REM song'
Inspirational song that typifies REM's lyrical and melodic genius: probably my favourite of theirs.
Michael has always combined songs together pretty much since the beginning.
the solo off the road movie version of this is my favourite ever. the song is fnatastic just simple chords and fantastic lyrics that blossom into this other wordly sound that fills you to the brim. As for the issue of the topic of the song it quite widely acknowledged that the lyrics were predominantly imrpovised during the recording and stipe just had a few words on a sheet during the studie version and the original take was deemed good enough to not need rerecording

really sensational,no word to describe this song.
I have never seen them live. I guess I have missed some chances, the closest they have been was Greece, I'm from Bulgaria. Best ever. Love Michael in white shirt❤
Loved this song back in the day. Time to dig out 'Out of Time' again...I'd forgotten how cool that album is. Automatic and Out of Time...what a purple patch. They did cool stuff before and after that period but for me those 2 albums are a pinnacle.
who says this song is under rated? Its beloved in the REM community
The best song EVER
Peter Buck is simply phenomenal
Anyone know why he says the second verse of Chorus and the Ring in the beginning of the song? I know he really likes that verse but why include it here?

great tune...
alguien puede traducir esta pieza?
have you seen the Jools Holland version with slide guitar.best....the ultimate version!
Tremendos!!!
Yes it will be out in October. October 16th in the States, probably the 15th in Europe. So really more of a Halloween present.
@AUS10TEX I agree about their 2 best being Murmur and Automatic.... Peter has always joked about not being a flashy solo lead and that he only knows one solo....
Music and poetry.

This band is something else...
great solo
his solo is different everytime when they play the song, that's the beauty about the song, don't doubt Peter he is the greatest guitar player ever...
@james9504: Thanks for sharing. Sorry for your loss.
That's sad you never saw them live. They will not tour again because they broke up last year. Maybe someday they will decide to re-unite but as of right now it looks very unlikely. This is something most of their fans are not happy about.
amazing
@stipey104 very sorry about your loss man....
@james9504 Yeah sorry to hear about that, glad R.E.M. could comfort you.
Awesome
Thanks for the info. and the vid

A stipe is a mushroom stem.
congratulations on your birthday Michael Stipe. You greet me?
This is a fan page. Do you really think a famous singer would agree to meet a creepy stranger?
What on earth is that solo about!? A howler Mr Buck! lol.
Enorme!!! Quel chanson magnifique!!!
So, how many hundreds of hours has Peter Buck spent listening to Neil Young? Great, great solo.
@gpeddino lol you do realize that he litterarily sang some random words and phrases jotted down on a piece of paper from brainstorming. But yes, they do fit well
....you wear me out...you wear me out...
I still cannot get over them departing.
I actually cried
Wait! You met them? So jealous.
their best, ever
❤❤❤❤
How good was that
It's bone not boner. You may want to listen more carefully. This song is about a man breaking up with a woman. As for Michael Stipe well its no secret what his sexuality is. He's kind of bi so live with it.
very neil youngish....
peter buck CAN play solos to safe his life, he could do it even back in 1985, when he was less skilled than nowadays! just watch the rockpalast 1985 show, where he plays several fast ones.....
do you play guitar yourself, mr. zimmerman?
I agree
He doesn't always wear make up. 03= orange and blue skinny stripes 04= the blue stripe got bigger 05= even bigger. The 2008 tour no make up at all. I saw six shows last year. I think he did all he wanted to do make up wise and he's more conservative now that he is older.
@AUS10TEX He once said he was a lesbian.
👍👍👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉
you can also see why they got neil young in on this one after seeing Peters solo.
Buck isn't my favourite guitarist., but its a super solo.
@bigb909 HOLY WORDS
@rchslion They'll be back, I promise
I don't think he needs any lessons at all. Only Neil Young plays the way he plays. Though Peter is very inspired by Neil, he has his own style and it would be silly for him to try to be someone else.
