I have waited so long to see E30 on your channel... the car is timeless. IMO the most iconic BMW ever built.
I am ten years older and I was screaming “take the corner at speed” at my screen. Beautiful car. Wish I got one 10 years ago.
I’m 31 and this car is everything to me, lol.
I don’t quite know why Matt keeps saying this car isn’t for him because of his age? Is it because the price is so high?
E30’s don’t need to cost $100k to be great. But there’s a reason the market price is so high.
E30’s are the root of euro car nerds from many age groups.
@@RyanS493 agreed. My e92 m3 is collecting dust while I drive the wheels off of my 1990 325i
@@davemackey1712 Thats a sick garage mate
@@RyanS493 I think he just means most people's "dream cars" are the ones they lust after right when they start getting heavy into cars. He got into them a few years later when the E36 was the hot ticket. For me I didn't get into BMW's at all until I was around 19 and bought my E34 535i, so even though I'm younger than Matt, and E30 M3 is still a dream
Oh yeah! I'm ALWAYS here for the E30 love. My first car was a 1991 E30 318is in Alpine white.
Would love to see Matt after driving these two, drive one with a s52 or s54. If that would change his mind at all. S14 is great for value for a low mileage or rare spec e30, but it has no guts! Also anything with fresh bushings, better suspension (strut and spring combo, or coilovers), and an upgraded steering rack absolutely changes how these cars drive!
Matty is back at OG HQ wearing shorts. All is good again.
One of the best Bmws ive been in was a s50b32(from the uk so the proper s50) converted e30 m3 - what a machine
13:50 Imola Yellow on the B5.
B5S4 B....!
They do make intakes and it's one of the best mods for the engine. The dtm race cars used carbon airboxes with no mass airflow sensor, and there are many high quality replicas available. They transform the sound of these, give better throttle response and a bit of power.
I had a friend in college that had one of these in 91, his was a 90. It was such a bad ass car. He bought it in Tampa at Reeves BMW and paid under $30k new for it, they gave him such a deal cause nobody wanted it, they sold 10-1 325is’s to the M3 cause of the inline 6. We had a lot of fun with this special car. It’s nuts what they have eclipsed in price to today. Rev it out for the fun.
I did lust after the E30 back when but never got one. First was a Cosmos black E36
I just did the paint correction on my 89 M3 for the first time in 20 years. It looks sooooo good. Excited for this series of vids
As someone approaching 45 this June we share a lot of the same thoughts on this era of the M3. Likewise I always wanted a E36 growing up, especially in the infamous blue. As I grew into my thirties the E30 styling cues grew on me and wanted one even more. I'd probably never own one but I definitely appreciate what was available over 30 years ago. The Griot's Garage wagon is freaking epic to see in person!
What an awesome series already. Looking forward to what’s to come with EAG.
Cannot wait to see more and that evo drive
Driving a golden era BMW, now that was when design and build quality was something to admire…
That Evo looks sick Matt!
Uh oh here we go!
Hey Matt, great video and great car. I know obviously since the car is not yours, you don't want to beat on it, but I will certainly say you were definitely not on ideal roads to really enjoy it. E30's love corners you can take with speed, like revving out 3rd gear into 4th when you're holding momentum. I also owned an E34 M5, and although it has significantly more power than the E30, it's a very similar sentiment. Almost feels "clunky" driving it around town and at low RPM's, but when you can wrap the gears out coming out of a nice corner is when it truly gets good. E36 and onward is where they stopped using "racing" engines and really started putting in stuff that is a lot more comfortable for daily driving. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to watching the video of you driving the Evo and others now as well.
ICON of the car world. What a treat.
Enjoyable video as always.
Would be super cool to see you drive the mercedes 190E aswell after this series!
Hi Matt ! Cool the see you in an E30. I'm from Europe and a lot of guys here tune their engines in DTM/Gr.A spec to generate at least 300hp. Rev at 10k RPM and makes the best induction noise in the history, ever.
Maybe something you can consider.
Okay we moving 😊
Had a new White ‘88 e30 M3. First new car that cost as much as our first house! Sticker was $36,xxx. Awesome car but first gear was way too short. Wish I still had it! 😢
Oh, and the front rotors were good for about 10-12k miles. Fortunately I put about that per year on it so they were covered under warranty.
I had 2 of them in 1991/92, the first was a white one 1988 with 10,000 miles on the clock.. I was only 20/21. wish I still had it. The second one was a Mauritius blue one can't remember the year or mileage (mainly because I'm middle aged now). Good times enjoy Matt I'm sure you'll own one soon enough.
The S14 is not a "shift at 4k RPM" engine for sure
I’m 52 this year and experienced this car in high school when one of my entrepreneurial friends bought a used one with money he’d saved up from mowing lawns over the years as a kid. I think he paid ~$15k for it.
They were not very popular in era and didn’t sell well. The 325i was a faster car that did almost all of the same tricks, and was far less attention grabbing if you were a more reserved person.
It was a fun (but slow) car and sounded good to rev out. We did plenty of high speed runs on the North Dallas Raceway, I mean Tollroad. Almost always loosing in the end to the Porsche, Mercedes, faster BMW, Saab, Lincoln, Cadillac, etc.
If you have a bunch of money and can tolerate how much less performance you get from an 80’s sports sedan, this is a great piece to have.
Like you Matt, for the money these fetch, I could never be happy with one. Best in my memories.
Still excited for the series. It’s fun to restore any car to the best possible presentation.
These cars are great after an engine swap. I know a guy who put a turbocharged M50 in his and it makes about 600 HP, which is an absolute blast in such a lightweight, raw car.
The bmw e30, Bmw e36 and ferrari f40 was the pinnacle of car design.
Matt is the “dual” everything guy now hahaha
weird that I have zero interest in BMWs or Porsches, my favorite car of yours that you have had is the C7 Corvette. Corvettes were my first love for cars back before I was in kindergarten. I have grown more into modern and muscle car era Mopars and love all eras of Dodge/ Ram trucks. I am about to hit 45. I still watch a huge portion of content. I have a huge disdain for Fords, but if someone gets their dream Mustang or preferred Ford, I still find it awesome for them. My first car I drove was an AMC Gremlin, first purchase was an 84 Chevy Chevette, first truck was an 80 Dodge D150.
He says its pritty slow with 10% throttle rev that biatch out to the limiter with 100% throttle and its fun
I had an E30 325i sport (no M3 in uk) such a fun car, stupidly sold it and now it worth at least 5 times what I paid for it.
2:52 - I'm curious as to what's going on with the right portion of the scissor lift that the US-spec E30 M3 is resting on. It looks VERY tilted toward the car. Is something wrong with that side of the lift?
I noticed that Bmw grows on you the more you drive them.
Matt.. is that a Pelagos FXD MN you are wearing? Very nice.
lets goooo !!! always appreciate a good m3
I am only 5 minutes into this video. The window switches were a big failure point for those cars. It's easy just to pop them out and change the switch for the window not working with the switch for the other window that does work to verify a faulty window switch. I am looking forward to this series.
what happened to the RH side of the lift?
Youd love e30 if your were into Rallying the prodrive m3 e30 rally car had 280hp from the same engine
Is it some kind of optical illusion or is the lift 0:41 tilting inwards? The right side specifically.
I graduated highschool in 1987 and trust me, it wasn't so cool to have one of these back then. Even for the times, they were slow. Back then, even a 5.0 Mustang was way cooler and so much faster. Only preppy dorks would get an E30 M3 just because it was a BMW. All the serious car guys were driving actual performance cars.
are you also going to detail the interior. or just the exterior
For the next drive.
Remember this was a race engine designed to be at redline the whole race. You need to rev these out and keep the revs up in the power band.
He owns a Gt3 and e92 m3, I'm sure he knows all about engines with little torque and all the power up top.
Ive been dreaming of building an e30 with a NA K series
Whats up with the lift is it supposed to bend in like that
👍👍
Canari yellow
Matt wants to play double dragon 🤔
Been following your channel since AdamLZ led me here. I was wondering what you think of the E93 hardtop convertible BMW's especially 2008 to 2012. I would love to see a video or even whole series on the 3 series hardtop convertibles. I think you would like it because you can detail the metal top like the rest of the car. Maybe get a hardtop convertible M3 as a future giveaway car?
I really dislike that car. It's 400 pounds heavier and considerably less rigid than the coupe or sedan.
Honestly this is a difficult car to justify, I’ve wanted one for the last 20yrs and now that I can afford one I would be scared to drive it because it’s meant to be a sideways around every corner and I know in ten years the base will be a half million dollar car.
It hurts my heart to say because I’ve always thought they look incredible. I had a 2001 manual 325ci I bought to off a friend that needed some help and that car was a blast. I didn’t give a shit about if I wrapped it around a tree just had some slow car fun and sold it 3yrs later for what I paid.
Agree
Is your lift bending in?
I noticed that too.
Maybe the right side part of the lift has a failing left hydraulic cylinder. Causing it to lean in.
Isn't LZ a part of the new ownership group?
$35k back in ‘88 is about $92k today in case anyone else was wondering 😂
There are multiple carbon intakes for this engine available - not as much as there used to be. Unfortunately the aftermarket companies have to constantly chase the new cars because their revenue always skews towards newer cars. The fuel injection on this car is rather dated at this point - so tuning is limited - an old kit called 'Alpha N' used to be popular but probably not supported well these days and may no longer be available. I would love to see what a modern aftermarket ECU with modern fuel injection and a small turbo could do on this engine. But the engine internals are so rare that few people want to risk breaking stuff by putting a turbo on it - so instead they just swap out a more modern engine. Which I guess is ok - but to me its like making an Aircooled 911 into an Electric car - misses the whole point.
When the final walk through of Lz house video gonna be up ?
This weekend.
I haven't driven one, but I love how they look.
Every time I think of moving to Florida I remember it's all flat and no "drivers" roads
Hi Matt beautiful M3 need to drive it a bit harder lot of 80s plusearlie 90s cars brakes were soft just change driving style plus brake
Hmmm Does not the US spec M3 have a Getrag gearbox with 1 gear down to left?? and 2 up left.....
It doesn't.
Why is the lift sagging so hard on the right side? It almost looks unsafe.
Wait, you’re wound tightly?!?
Hot take. The E36 318ti gives is exact same driving experience, being essentially the same car. But you can’t beat the looks of the E30.
Every E30 M3 I’ve driven has been a bit of “never meet your heroes” situation for me. Very cool car, but I don’t get what car reviewers are snorting when they talk about how they drive.
Hilarious!
Yes, finally! I always prefer the old stinky cars, they're so much more fun on US roads. We really can't enjoy the power and competence of new cars here, so bombing around in old cars while staying within the law is the way to go for me.
At 5:04 were you in 2nd gear when you started driving forward? Im pretty sure 1st gear is left and back.
That is only on euro ones with the dog leg trans.
Need your vehicle Dry Ice Cleaned in the Ohio area, come see us. Bought our ICS machine from OG. #dryice #dryicecleaner #drycenation

Honestly, I don’t see you falling in love with this car. I see you falling for the idea of this car, but that will only lead you to eventually selling it.
You have to be nuts to pay 100 grand for that car 🤔
No kidding. $100K? $300K? I guess some rich people just like throwing money away.
E24s get no love
E30s, especially M3s don't like to be driven like old ladies. rev the damn thing!
90k mi is not a 100k car unfortunately. You really can't appreciate the car without pushing the car in the canyons to exploit its sublime chasis.
lol complains about the power same guy who had an em1
My Civic had a B18C swap.
hard pass for me, too old and slow but nice looking car
