Ok to all the people saying I forgot to mention Heavy’s PhD in Russian literature, I didn’t. I intentionally left it out because it is considered NON-CANON. It was only ever mentioned in conversations in Poker Night at the inventory, a 3rd party game written by non-Valve writers about non-canon crossovers with other characters. It does not count as part of his character but it doesn’t make Heavy any dumber because he doesn’t technically have it. Heavy is smart boy but can’t easily convey his thoughts in English.

Ugh , Soldier isn't dum , if he was , he would hold the rocket launcher the different way , and wouldn't be talking about how soup is a propaganda (for some reason) , and sometimes goes insane , but with a reason.

I'd say I agree with everything you said in the video except one: Engineer's kindness isn't an act. He's genuinely calm, collected, and friendly. I think the most important thing about TF2's characters is how they encourage you to play the game. In most games, the playable characters have almost no personality, since that usually clashes with the actions of the person playing as them. For example, Engineer is easily the most stressful class to play, with so many things to worry about and manage at once. So, in order to play optimally as Engineer, you HAVE to remain calm at all times, even in the most heated and insane situations. The game is basically forcing the player to become Dell Conagher: calm, calculated, and hiding a lot of negative feelings. I could write about this all day, but the point is that this is true for ALL classes. The game encourages, or even *forces* you to act as if you were that classes respective character, and it's honestly one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen in a video game.

When you get to the level of insanity that is Soldier having canonically fought grizzly bears naked and covered in honey, you know that you’ve found something special.
My favorite thing about the mercenaries is that not only do they have distinct personalities but those personalities reflect how they play. Scout as a character is irritating and overly cocky which occasionally gets him into trouble, scout as a class specializes in harassing the enemy team and using his speed and small hitbox to put himself into dangerous situations and narrowly avoid death. Spy as a character is suave and egotistical but deep down actually cares about his team, spy as a class relies on skilled movement and outsmarting the enemy but ultimately is kind of a hidden support class who protects his own team from big pushes. Heavy as a character is big and scary but actually quite thoughtful and warm once you get to know him, heavy as a class at first seems simple and straight forward but actually relies on smart positioning and mainly exists to protect the weaker members of his team and can even heal people.
@@inspectorjavert9868 spoilers for those who haven't read the comics nah, I'm pretty sure literally every one of the mercs except for scout (and mayber soldier because lead poisoning) knows that spy is scout's dad. Not to say that heavy isn't smart though, he is very intelligent
It's really sad that Spy not only loves his son, he loves him enough to make sure Scout would never know of the real truth, likely because he believes that Scout genuinely hates the idea of being his son.
@@donnovandalusong266 I mean when your dad basically leave you when your mother was pregnant is kinda make you pissed off you know? And when you know that your dad was basically your teammates in the team and he didn't even tell you about it is also another factor.
I somewhat believe that Spy joined the team just so he could watch over his son. I don't know if this has been ever confirmed but i believe it has definitely been theorized before. Makes the whole thing quite wholesome, despite their messed up relationship.
I feel like the sanest people are spy and sniper. Spy is cold and calculating, as well as snide. However, he’s very sane. Sniper, too, is calculating and calm. He sees sniping as a job.
Despite this, he was able to somehow revive someone after 16 hours back in the 60's, while modern science can bring someone back in half an hour if they're lucky.
I mean... Meet the soldier He’s talking to the entire decaptiated blu team Pyro doesn’t realize what he’s actually doing (at least I think so I’ve never read the comics let alone have one) Spy engi and medic must be at least the most sane person in the entire game (that’s what I think don’t take my word for it)
@@larutmrs3313 The Jungle Inferno short. Him and Saxton Hale are the ones they could actually get. They're definitely not getting any new Soldier lines now, and I think all the others have moved on to other stuff.
@@burntbacn From what I heard, a lot of voice actors, including the Merc ones were on some kind of major strike when Jungle Inferno came out. Scout's VA showed up mainly because he is heavily involved with tf2 via the community.
I think the only reason Heavy lashed on the guy because that guy killed the same man who outsmarted bullet (Ubercharge) and for that Heavy has a huge respect for Medic
I can't believe I just now got the “So your dad’s dead, huh?” “Yes.” “Yeah, mine disappeared.” “Yes. Your father disappears often.” interaction. Here we see that Heavy knows that Spy is his father and he was references that. Spy can go invisible, spy "disappears often".
I don't know much about tf2 but somebody told me that because demo drinks so much he gets double vision which restores his depth perception and that's the goofiest damn logic in lore and i love it I can't vouch for it's canon-ness though, it is funny for sure
The main reason why Scout has been getting the most limelight is because his voice actor is the only one really available to reprise his role most of the time. The others under most circumstances cannot make it to the office to record a few lines. Due to this Scout been getting the most attention cause he is the only one who has his voice actor available to record some lines. This is shown most in the Jungle Inferno trailer where Scout and Saxton were the only ones that ever speak.
NO NOT THE SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANS
Another thing that I think is really interesting about Sniper and Spy is that although they present themselves as calm, suave, and rational, they are also frequently just _really immature_ and petty. This can be seen especially in their domination quotes where they honestly just throw around schoolyard insults.
Two things about the art style that stood out to me would be the hands and the faces. The hands are very stylized and large, and the faces seem slightly more realistic/gritty than the rest of the body. Those are just two things I noticed!
One year in my high-school, there was a kid who came in that literally nobody knew. Wasn't a student at our school. He came in on our Halloween costume day, and he was a fully decked out Red Spy with a replica Saxxy. This absolute legend was chased down throughout the school by fellow students and eventually just vanished from the building. I'm not even sure if the administration knew.
He has the cloak and dagger and just sitting in the corner of the school, standing there the whole time. Legends say that he is still standing there until now and prob frvr.
tf2's impact on the internet is so crazy. i've literally heard sound clips from tf2 in kpop variety shows. like they'll use engie's iconic "nope" and i get whiplash. this game is so important to me too though. idk where i would be without it getting me through high school lol.
A personal favorite depiction of soldier being wild but not being dumb is Emesis Blue. Especially with the whole sniper in the sewer part. He does some rash things but isn’t a screaming idiot. Sometimes I wish valve would adopt some of that to soldier’s character.
There's a really cool aspect to Sniper's character in-game. We all know about the domination and revenge lines that the characters say when they dominate someone but Sniper's lines has a really cool twist to them: When the Sniper dominates someone while unscoped, he'll just yell his lines the same way the other mercs do. But if you're still scoped when you trigger his lines, he'll say the same exact line word for word, but he's muttering them quietly to himself. It's a neat little touch that really puts TF2's characterization over the top
I've never played TF2 but I freaking love it. The Meet The Team videos and SFMs are always something I come back to and have been doing so for years now
This is why there will never be another set of characters like these nine lovable and hilarious mercenaries. They have so much backstory, development and love put into these nine classes that if there was a Team Fortress 3 with brand new classes, they couldn’t top what these nine classes have brought us for these past 11 years. 2:03 Oh hey, there I am!
I feel really sad that I've not properly come across this game before. Joining literally a week ago I've become obsessed with all of the mercenaries' antics and personalities.
Because they're the best kind of characters. They aren't heroes, they aren't villains, they are mercs, the most glorious, neutral (and probably exciting) job that exists. Also stereotypes. Actually nevermind this all it's just the stereotypes.
@@klutz3955 While I like Overwatch.. I don't get how the gameplay works. I mean, clearly we have characters who hate each other yet in game they're working together...
Meanwhile in engineer's brain: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
"Some people think they can outsmart me huh? Maybe... maybe." That's not something a dumb person would say. Heavy has been smart since the beginning. I think he is the third smartest person in the team.
Yeah he's just not good at English, which is fair no good at anything but English and I'm not dumb. In terms of smartest I would say engineer, spy, sniper, medic but I would say he definently one of the more mature when not one the battlefield
Actually probably 4th because pyro is actually pretty smart. His flamethrower is homemade and he led an engineering company to success. I still agree with you though
People right now are just asking who's smarter, medic or engineer Yeah, the engineer has 11 PhD but medic literally revive the dead, make people invincible to most kind of damage, convince satan himself to let him not once but multiple times. He's the one that inserts inflatable buffoon (I don't actually remember what it was) into the TFC team and has a remote to inflate him. Also yeah he got a medical licence too I guess. (Yes it was provoked but he did have it at one point) A man that install a robotic hand to himself and a man who's playing god
I hear Soldier lines and I physically smile. Every time. I used to make GMod videos, so I've listened to pretty much every TF2 voice line countless times... and yet still whenever I hear a Soldier voice line I can't help but smile. I mean, how can't you? "If God had wanted you to live, he would not have created me!" "Get a haircut, hippie!" "I have done nothing but teleport bread for three days." Hilarious!
I also love how each character has a distinctive theme song that matches their character. If someone played one of the songs from the meet the team videos, I would immediately know which character it belongs to.
Scout: The Speedy Sardonic Arrogant Soldier: The Insane Extreme Patriot Pyro: The Myterious Misunderstanding Pyromaniac Demoman: The Alcohol Addict Scottish Scrumpy-Swilling Heavy: The Relaxed and Educated Heavy Weapons Guy Engineer: The Soft-Spoken Technology-Obsessed Texan Medic: The Crazy Mad Cientist Sniper: The Professional Emontionless Assassin Spy: The Cold-Blooded Serious Killer
2:06 I will never forget when my Social Studies Teacher tried to tell us that that poster was an actual propaganda piece. I told her it wasn’t and she didn’t believe me. It literally says Team Demoman on it.
One thing I find incredible about tf2 is that they managed to design a character litterally devoid of a face and coherent speech that's still more recognisable and more rich with personality than the average video game character in any modern fps
Sniper’s gotta be my favorite, he’s got the best theme music, and the best quote perfectly summing up his character, “Be polite, be efficient, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.”
They actually also showed that pyro has a moral compass in the comics when he seems to wait until a particular line to decide to kill two grunts who may not have needed to be killed should they not have accidentally uttered this aloud when he was watching from the dark sitting on a pipe above them the whole time
Yeah I feel like while pyro is insane as hell he does have a soft spot for other I mean she literally kills them and doused them in gasoline cause of their kiddie plan
@@mikadosannoji553 I like to think he used to be an experimental weapons tester who had a terrible accident, leaving him with 3rd degree burns all over his body and a shattered psyche. The folks behind his department deemed him useless, but the upper echelons of Mann Co. figured he's be good as "disposable firepower" to wage war with if his mentality's kept together, at the very least. So they threw him in a non-removable asbestos suit and gas mask, gave him a prototype set of "dissolution eyewear" to give him some form of vision after finding out that his eyes were too damaged to function properly, and put a flamethrower in his hands. And because the last thing he remembers before effectively being "killed" was fire, the goggles were tuned (a little too well) to alter his perception of flame to prevent bouts of PTSD-triggered rage and/or panic. (this is just my personal headcanon, feel free to disagree)
I got into the game just last month after discovering all the great voice lines. I absolutely love when a game can nail characters and give the game heart with them. Voice acting gives me life. It’s what makes the game 100 X more exciting, especially because it doesn’t take itself very seriously *cough overwatch*
I've never played the game. I'm still invested in the community, content, art, and more just by the characters. You don't even need to play the game to enjoy so much of it's world
Games like Overwacth and Paladins give us new playable characters evry couple months, which does add nore to the game play, but it sometimes make some characters get forgotten as the list of playable heroes increase. Because TF2 never added any new classes, it made the 9 mercs so iconic and loveable as the years went by. Valve went more in depth with their lore and background, and really put them to life.
Overwatch is the equivalent of a shallow who're who gets by on it's looks and ends up alone at 40 becuase her personality is faked and taken from others
You're right, Archimedes is literally the best character in tf2 Edit: Wow. Thank you so much for 1k likes! Because of this, I'm going to start playing team fortress 2 after a long break 😊
19:25 Now I get it, Heavy knows that Spy is Scout's father. That's why he says "Your father disappears often." Scout corrects him by saying his father is dead, but Heavy was giving a hint to Scout, saying his father 'disappears often' is literally about Spy's invisibility.
@Tyrlon2 The game "poker night at the inventory" has the heavy in it and I think that might be where that fact is coming from, I do know he says in the game that he has a PhD in Russian literature and is portrayed as being actually pretty smart. (after 10 years of youtube you'd think I'd know how to do a proper comment reply thing but whatever)
I think if Team Fortress 3 ever gets released, most people will hate the new characters, if they'll even make new characters for it. Because let's face it, does anyone have any idea how to replace those characters? But I also think over time, people would grow to love them, once they get fleshed out, either with their own comics or Meet the team videos.
@@tribot_leader no but they got older and it's difficult for voice actors to be able to pull off a voice exactly the same for such a long period of time.

That being said, there is some truly amazing literature to be found on platforms such as FFN, AO3, etc, some of it being better than actual novels.
I personally don't care that Soldier's character was really dumbed down. It doesn't make him any less likeable. In fact, I think it's charming. There's a reason other "stupid" characters in pop culture are so beloved. Looking at you, Spongebob.
spongebob wasn't portrayed as stupid in the beginning naive yes but not stupid it is when the seasonal rot came along that he started acting like a moron, and patrick like a sadist
Caboose in a nutshell. A complete idiot but we wouldnt want him any other way.
