    I watched your videos on this John Deere and bought a 2023 x580. What a great tractor! This thing is very rigid and I am confident that at the age of 64, with the right mainternance - this will the last lawn tractor I will need to buy. Good job on your videos too!

    We bought a 1025 R two years ago to clean up our property. We used a bucket and forks. Took over 30 trailer loads to the land fill. It worked great for what we needed, but we didn't like the mower system. We sold it and bought a X 590 with a mower and snowblower. It works great and it's easier to work on. Thanks for a great video

    I bought an x394 for my lawn-mowing and property maintenance side job. AWS was the only thing keeping me in the lawn tractor segment and not going to a zero turn like everyone else. I have a need for quick mowing, which the AWS gives me, but also a decent tow rating for hauling rake piles and mulch. I also mow some very hilly properties that ZTs might struggle on. I refuse to buy a sealed unit transmission, so the only options available to me were the x370, x390x, and x394 which all have filtered and serviceable transaxles. The x394 being the only one with a serviceable transaxle and AWS. I think the best way to differentiate the series is by their intended hitches. 1/2/3 series for simple pin-hitch and tow behind implements, 5 series for sleeve-hitch implements and ground engaging work, and 7 series for three point hitch work/4x4/diesel options. I picked up my x394 for its quick mowing, and longevity, while I keep around an old Kubota B6100D tractor for any ground engaging work, and that Kubota will out till any new x500 garden tractor by a country mile.

    I bought two X380's a year after moving to where I am now. I keep one at my house, and the other at the house I take care of that's a few miles away. My yard is a half acre, lots of hills and obstructions to deal with. The other yard is almost 2 acres, basically flat and at a constant slight grade towards the back of the property, not too many obstructions to cut around. I wanted a beefier tractor than I needed so it wouldn't work too hard to take care of the properties. I don't use either for snow removal, I tow an oversized 4 wheel garden wagon when necessary which doesn't add weight to the tractor just pulling forces. They are great! They are my first lawn tractors, and after doing a lot of research, I decided on the X380 which I feel was a good decision. I bought a tractor jack to lift the front end of the tractors so I can pressure wash under the deck a few times a season, and at the end of the season. I have the 48" deck on both and lifting the tractor on the jack is a whole lot easier than removing the deck.

    Nice video. I like listening to your comparisons. The x580 is a nice machine. I’m on year 4 of having a x738 and I love the machine. I had a few reasons why I went with that. One was weight and I have a lot of clay soil that holds alot of water. When I had my old x320 I used to get stuck quite a bit in the spring. So having the 4x4 and being under 1000 pounds was a factor. Also where I store it in the winter, I was able to put my trailer inside and have my tractor and snowblower on and close the door with a few inches to spare. And I have a soft cab and I have enough room to get it in before scraping. I also wanted shaft driven instead of belt. Overall it’s a great machine for my liking and I can even pull empty hay wagons on my farm when need be instead of getting one of my bigger tractor running. The diesel would be nice but my gas engine has never failed me in anything.

    Great video! I was literally just at the John Deere dealer in Butler, PA. The x580 seems like a well built machine. They had a 1023e there for $11,500 but that was no mower deck. Deck is probably $2k. Loader $4,400. So definitely worth checking out if shopping the high end x700 series.

      Well thank you! Unfortunately I’m in the process of trading up to a 700 series, so there won’t be too many more 580 videos, there will be spark plugs/oil/air/fuel filter yet before it goes, but probably not too much more specific to the 580 itself, unless I do some last minute impressions. It will serve you well though!

    Thanks for the review and info. I am in the process of replacing my old JD GT262 I purchased in 1991. That old girl has a Kawasaki FC540V and tons of hours so your 580 should be solid for many years (still running great - I just want a larger tractor). I agree with you thoughts the "beefier" models are the better choice. One thing you did not mention is trade in value and it is much better on a 1023E/25R over the 700 series. I am leaning toward a 1025R myself. Thanks again for the video - oh and you mentioned you are in the military - THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

    Another helpful video! I do appreciate that you updated with a comment regarding your evolution in perspective wrt the 1025 vs the 700 series. Might I suggest you update your video description to maybe reflect this … not everyone reads the comments like do :-). Thanks to your thoughtful commentary and your other videos and your direct reply to me a few days ago, my perspective is evolving. I likely now will be looking at a 700 series - the 1025 just doesnt meet my needs for my property and my future projects … but like you note, if groundwork is important, then a beefier garden tractor is a better long term investment. The big difference as I continue my learning journey is that the 700 series is a real garden tractor, while the 1025 is a small farm tractor (if I can make that analogy). I need a beefy garden tractor … I dont need a subcompact farm tractor. Unfortunately, there seems to be a built in bias toward the 1025 and yet it seems the JD is quite thoughtful in its lineup - the 700 is for a different niche of customers than the 1025. Anyways, a bit of a ramble, but thank you!

    I've had the 700 series (diesel) and a x590 (also a 4 series compact TLB). If you are going to do any ground engagement the diesel 700 series blows the X590 away. The AWD, weight and yes, size help quite a bit. If you are doing snowblowing and mowing smaller areas the X580-90 would be better. I had the hydro tilt front blade on my 700 for plowing snow and a 60 inch mower deck. The x590 only had a locking diff in the rear, it was basically 2wd and struggled plowing with a blade. Otherwise it was a sweet machine. Never had a snowblower on either.

    Hey man great video. I appreciate how in depth you go in these.
    I just bought a house, 1.75 acres and about a 400 foot driveway, slight but gradual incline. I’m in Connecticut so I’m considering a garden tractor for mowing/snowblowing.
    I know you said you don’t plan to use yours for snow but with your experience on it, would you recommend an x500 series for that kind of use? My budget won’t really allow for mouth g above the 500 series or equivalent. Curious on what you’d recommend based on your experience?
    Thanks in advance and keep up the great content!

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would probably be ok so long as the snow where you are melts, and doesn’t hard pack onto your driveway and stay all winter. If this is the case, 2wd may not be the best, but if not, then you would be ok. I’d suggest weight, and maybe chains if you have a problem. Just be aware, the front will probably get pushed around a lot if the snow you are pushing gets too heavy.

    Really liked when you started to discuss the models and recommendations... I went through the same research and reasoning when deciding on which model to buy. I knew right away that I was going to skip the S1XX series. I then spent time trying to decide between an S240 or a 300 series... I really could not see what was the actual benefit of going with a 300 series vs the S240. Realistically speaking, as you mentioned, if I needed something better, I would had skipped the 300 series and gone for the 500 series. In my case, I have a small yard... the house is built on a 1/2 acre lot..and then I have a 15' trees buffer all the way in the back... so the S240 was enough for my needs.
    Thanks again for putting this video together.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well don’t completely discount the 300. I’d much rather have one over a 1 or 200, but as I said ya pretty much have to go 370 or higher for it to have a stronger axle over the 200s

    • @Wachuko-1
      @Wachuko-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshsGreenGarage understood. That was my point, I would have to go with something like the 370 to have something better than the 240 in the 300 series. I could not justify the additional US$2,000.00 for the kind of lot that I have.
      Now... why would you want a 1025R over a 2025R? At that price point, I would definitely spend the additional 2K on the 2025R.... if I only had the property for it... lol.

    I have wheel weights on my 580 and thinking on getting suitcase weights for the front. First, how many weights does the bracket accept and do they move around a lot , or are the pretty secure? Thanks

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 weights max, them move a little, but aren’t going anywhere. If you have less than 4, they are gonna wobble quite a bit, but not really a problem, can get slightly annoying though clanking around…

    I have just over an acre. I’ll be doing mowing obviously along with towing an aerator/spreader. I’ve also got a good bit of leveling/grade work I need to do along with needing to lay/spread a bunch of gravel to expand our parking and fight the mud holes on our land. Is the 580 enough? I eventually intend on getting a barn and some small livestock like goats to raise for my family as well. Would need to haul some square bales and muck stalls with it.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t even consider a 580. After owning the 580 my opinion has changed a bit from this video. I still think the 580 is a fantastic mower, but in the video I talk about how the 700 series is pointless and for the money might as well go to a 1025R. Well guess who traded his 580 on a 758? It sounds like you have a lot of work to do with whatever you get, and you won’t be happy with the 580. Are you putting bales in a little cart and pulling them around? Or are you trying to use a bale spear or something? If you want an implement to move them, you won’t be able to do it with the 580. With the 700 series you can get a 3 point hitch and attachment for stuff like that, there is even a company that makes a log grapple for the front that would work great. For cleaning stalls I’d imagine a box blade would be great (Cat 1 L) if it’s from frontier or another brand… now for leveling and grading, I have shown what the 580 can do, so there is no denying it is ground work capable, but it won’t hold a match to a 700 series. For me the biggest problem was rear lift. The 580 sleeve hitch can’t compete. Bottom line for what it sounds like you are getting into, go with a current or older X700 series, an older X400 series (those are 2wd), an older X5X5 series (those are 4WD), or a 1025E/R… the older x4 and x5x5 tractors are basically todays x7 series.

    • @chasefleck2221
      @chasefleck2221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man thank you so much for the reply. The dealer almost had me convinced on needing the 1025R but I just can’t justify the cost. I think I’m going to sub out to a friend a lot of my major grade/gravel work. So now I’ll really just need it for lawn care and maybe pulling the big cart with a square bale or two or hauling fire wood or mulch. Might get the small box blade so I can do maintenance on all the gravel I’m getting put in. But I think I’m going to opt out of using my own tractor for the large work. So that being said, would the x580 be a good fit? Primarily just for pulling lawn care implements and pulling small loads with minimal ground engagement.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, the 580 pulls like a tank. I will say consider a tow behind box blade, I think DR makes a pretty cool one. The sleeve hitch for these just isn’t up to par. I was enthusiastic going into it, and it will work, but in the end I was disappointed. The design of it just can’t lift like a 700, and the sleeve hitch box blade isn’t heavy enough by itself. Without a weight it just bounces on the ground, and when ya add a 42lb weight, it struggles to lift. Stick to towing your implements and you will be 100% happy!

    I have 6hrs on my new john deere x580 lawn. I purchased it two weeks ago. Today, I noticed that the fluid had boiled out of from the container which can be viewed from the rear of my tractor. I believe it contains the tranaxal fluid. Can you help me understand what happened

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is hydraulic/transaxle fluid. Now what do you mean by boiled out? Like overflowed, and leaked out at the cap? Or boiled to and now none is left? When I got mine the fluid was just at the low mark, and I thought I had a leak right away from just moving the tractor around during the time of my earliest channel videos, because with not even an hour on it, it dropped noticeably below the line. I thought about it and figured it is probably normal as the fluid is for more than the axle, it runs the steering too. Because if this I figured there may be air trapped is the lines and cylinder for the steering, and also the deck lift. And when you steer back and forth and actuate the deck, if forces air out, and fills with hydro. This is exactly like bleeding brakes or steering on a car. So when the fluid returned to room temp, I filled it to the full mark, and I haven’t had a problem since. If you have an issue like this, chances are you are experiencing what I have, not it boiling dry.
      Now if it came out the top, there again, I doubt it got so hot it boiled, but the hydro does expand. So if it was way over full, it could expand enough to push out… but it would have to be waaaaaay over full. Or it is simple like maybe the cap wasn’t on tight, and you drove over really rough terrain, and just shook it around a whole bunch. Also take note of your climate, the factory and recommended fluid is only good to 86* F… so if it is 98 where you are at, the fluid is probably expanding even more, and not protecting gearing and stuff like it should.
      Hope this helps!

    I'm looking at an x390. My lawn is half an acre. I had considered a x580 but thought it might be overkill. Do you think the x390 is a okay machine for my size yard. I want a old 318 but in my area you find them and they are beat up and nearly dead. I thought the x390 would be a close second to a 318 size wise.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I think a lot of people wouldn't compare the 318 to the modern tractors... the 318 is pretty iconic, and is capable of more than probably even the X580, with the exception of engine HP... it can use a 3 point hitch, and has outlets for hydro... Really you have to weigh your use, are you only cutting grass? If so the X390 is top of the line for just that. Essentially you are getting the size of an X5XX tractor as the current 300 and 500 are almost identical other than transaxle and engine horse, you just wont be able to get into the ground engaging side of things. If you need to do any gardening with it (cultivating/plowing) might as well move up. Now back to grass cutting, if that is it, the K58 will last forever doing that, and you can get the same deck sizes as the 500s. you are only down 1 HP, so it won't take you any longer to cut. Only other thing to look at is how open your yard is, and consider what deck size would be best for you, or if you might want a 4 wheel steer model. My only recommendation for X300 is stay 370 or above so you get a bigger axle, and preferably go with power steering, X390 would be my choice if shopping in that range as it has it all. You could also got down to the 370, you get all the good stuff, K57, barely less than the K58, but better than the lower models, and you get power steering. Has a 42" deck, so more maneuverable, and and goes down another 1.5 HP, but still plenty for a 42" deck. Best part is you save a ton of cash! its all about what you need! Hope this helps!

    The x500 series transmission uses a belt drive while the x700 series uses a shaft drive. How big a factor is this for ground engaging work?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it depends who ya ask, because some people say to be a garden tractor, it has to be shaft driven… I don’t agree with that, I see two different “classes”, those being garden tractors, and super garden tractors. To me a garden tractor will have the standard of a bolted rear wheel, and an available sleeve hitch, with a belt drive transaxle. An SGT in my mind has bolted wheels, available 3 point hitch, hydraulic outlets, and generally shaft driven. There may be some odd balls that are belt driven and have all the other SGT stuff, but I can’t really think of any, maybe some of the first JDs? But I can’t say for certain, I’d have to look into it more. Some will appear that they are shaft driven too, but have a belt coming off the motor that drives the shaft. Cub Cadet has models like this. Belt drive has little merit in the ability to do ground work in my opinion though. JD 210-216 are belt drive but I doubt anyone would argue their ground work capability. But to answer your question, I see either being capable of ground engaging work, drive type isn’t a factor, the only limit being the attachments you can get for it, and honestly I don’t think you would ever be able to tell the difference between the two if you didn’t know. The belt shouldn’t slip if everything is in working order, all you will do is spin tires, and it’s a weight/tire game at that point.

  • @JordanHaisley
    @JordanHaisley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a 730, and really am not sure it was a great purchase decision. I’ve done a lot of ground engaging work with it already, and it’s been great for that, but I think in retrospect a 1023 or 1025 is probably a better option for anyone who thinks they want a x700 series.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good to see someone who has a 700, and can say the 1 series would have been better. 700 or 1 is a big debate, and usually it is always people that have 1s, never touched a 700, that think 1 is the end all be all... I can see the 1 being better for more, but I myself am looking at a 700 now, and for me I can't justify the size, or the need for all the capabilities of the 1.

    • @JordanHaisley
      @JordanHaisley 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshsGreenGarage I have made custom attachments for the front quick hitch to get past some limitations, and it can do a lot, still you can’t dig all that deep, or move loads very high.
      For your situation, the loader from a 1series would be useful for moving the snow, when you didn’t push it back far enough.
      You can get some really great deals on the x700s if you’re willing to look at used equipment.

      I have had mowers with fx kawasaki and have had simplicity legacy zero turn mower (2007 model) with Briggs and Stratton vanguard v twin engine. That thing eas bomb proof. It could easily mowers lush thick grass over 6 to 10 inches tall.
      If buying a zero turn mower ho ahead and buy a fx over a fs series kawasaki engines. The fx series engines are just built better.
      But if you are buying a commercial grade zero turn.mower those big over 31 to 37 hp briggs Stratton vanguard engines are slso very powerful ones.
      I cut grass for other families for over 30 years di h have owned several different brands on riding or zero turn mowers with both kawasaki and Briggs Stratton engines. Go ahead and buy the mower with bigger 23 to 30 hp engines. If only using a 52 to 54" cutting deck the 23 to 25 hp engines will be adequate. If buying a mower with larger 60 to 62" cutting decks go ahead and buy a mower tgat atleast has a 27 to 30 hp engine on it to easily turn the blades on that wider cutting deck as you will have more volume of grass underneath the deck to be cut up good.

    Just bought a x758 w/60" deck. Mostly mowing, but also got the 60" front blade mainly for snow. Hydraulic angling and 4wd will be big improvements over my current kubota gt. Did not want the 6' + turning radius of a 1025, nor the extra size and height. I had an old cub cadet gt years ago that turned like this and it's a real pain. Definitely paid the same or very nearly, but in my eyes the 1025 is too small to be a real tractor, too big to be a lawn mower.

    D both an x590 with 54" cutting deck and a x700 (2010 model with 54" cutting deck).
    Both were gois riding mowers. The x700 runs faster at about (9.2 mph) fireard speed bersus only andout 7.2 mph on the x590.
    If want to push snow or rocks you should go ahead and buy the x700 series deereriding mowers. But it will cist about 3 to 4grand more. If you go with x738 to x758 riders you will be soending over 15 to 17 grand plus taxes.

    I'm just gonna have to live with my x350 I can't justify paying 6-9 grand for a mower

    wow, that was good information, thanks! I didn't know you were in Alaska or that the grass grows a lot there. Ya you're right about the 100 series mowers not having a good transmission. This D170 won't mow up this little hill th-cam.com/video/9_3qCmCmlIg/w-d-xo.html I've also seen a lot of used 100 series mowers for sale with a note saying "for flat lawns only, won't mow hills". Do you have hills to mow? Was your D105 mowing the same lawn? Did it ever crap out on you? Ya, it's good you got the X580 and not the X570. It's better to have power steering for a heavy mower like that.

      Not any substantial hills, but I had no problems with the 105, it’s mowed the same land (lagged in thicker grass)... only time I had trouble is when it is wet, mowing the septic area is tough, one wheel would spin, but that I’d say is to be expected. Only real problem, and I wouldn’t even call it real, was I needed to rebuild the carb. Also I only had 109hrs on mine when I sold it, I hear problems start around 150... but then again people abuse them. I took good care of mine, the most stress it ever had was towing the 40” dethatcher and the 42” sweeper (which gets heavy)

      @@JoshsGreenGarage oh, darn you sold it already. I was going to ask if you could find a hill that the D105 won't climb and then do a video of the X580 going up that hill.

    WHY anyone would buy an X700 series is beyond me. For another $100 you
    can have a 2023 compact tractor which is more capable & heavier duty.

    Can you run a 48 inch deck on a 580 ?

      Yep, just need to find one or order one. If you are getting the machine new, hopefully the dealer would work with you to get them switched, rather than bill you for both. If ordering it special, they may even be able to make that switch at the factory, but I can’t say for sure.

    My 180 transaxle broke with 80 hours and on the 3rd summer, total waste of money

      Surprised this happened on a 180, they have slightly better axles. Sorry you didn't get more time than that out of it.

      Well, it’s an opinion video, and all my videos are long, my goal is to go really in depth for people that may be interested.
