I was today years old when I found out spider wood is rhododendrons. The entire county I live in is filled with rhododendrons. Washington's state flower is rhododendrons. I have 4 rhododendron plants in my front yard. I have a park near my house called rhododendron park, that has like 50 different species and varieties of rhododendron. I think I hit the jackpot

My cousin just got into college and he told me he got a fish so I came over and the betta had a nice tank but the only problem was he had rainbow gravel and some decorations. Now obviously some decor can look good in a tank but these were nasty and I don’t think he liked either cause he asked me for help

The thing that started my fish keeping career was my mom. She randomly came home one day with a female crowntail betta. The poor thing had stress stripes but I had no idea what was wrong because I knew nothing. Our last fish tank was four goldfish in a ten gallon tank with no filter (yup, we had no idea what we were doing).
So I popped her in a vase with marimo balls and called it good. I was so wrong
;-;
But it’s ok because TH-cam educated me and now I have three betta fish living in various aquascaped five and ten gallons, one of which is black water biotope
I went to my local petsmart to find a fish bowl for my bamboo (i want the roots to spread out more than the vase it is in will let it) and was pleasantly surprised to find out they weren't selling them anymore.
Of course that means i'll have to find a fishbowl elsewhere.
I want to mention that it's important to monitor your PH and KH when adding driftwood or anything that adds tannins to the water as it will reduce your PH if you don't have enough buffer. I sadly accidentally killed my Betta by adding driftwood to my tank and crashing the PH. My tap water is a PH of 7.0 and only 1 KH. This never was an issue as my PH would never go lower then 6.5 between water changes. The driftwood crashed the PH below 6 in a day. I woke up to a dead betta 🤧
😨what do you mean by buffer?
@@misscristina2789 Buffer is how resistant it is to changes in PH. The more KH, the more buffer/resistant to change in PH. For example, if you have 5 KH and a PH of 7.0 and you add acids to the water from driftwood, it consumes your KH and resists lowering the PH, so you may be left with 2 KH but almost unchanged PH, maybe like 6.8 PH. But if your KH/buffer hits 0 then the PH can make large swings in short time.

Beautiful! Great how to set up for blackwater. I am a moderator on a Facebook betta page and we get asked more times daily than I can count about black water/tannins.
I'm so glad to see you promoting a 5+ gallon motto as many people don't realize they are easier than small tanks!
If I had anything to add it would be the mention of how black water set ups tend to cause an initial PH swing, as well as touching general nitrogen cycle info also about how bettas prefer to be in a stable 80 degree environment to avoid stress and illness.

I'm glad you tackled this topic since there are only few channels that feature the black water setup because almost all of them doesn't like the look of it but bettas are more comfortable with black water as well as Rasbora and Neons. All my betta tanks have IAL because among all leaves that releases tannin they are the most abundant here in the Philippines so I have no problem picking them around the parks.
You can make a healthy betta tank as long as you give them plants,filter,or a air bubbler if you don’t have plants, also you need at least 5 gallons
My Killifish love their blackwater tank. It's fun to see because I have several tanks side by side, blackwater for killies, bright greenish right next to it for Tridens, blackwater again for another type of killie. Seeing the different types of tanks you can make in one place has been fun and educational for many people who visit!
Got some nice driftwood recently and have been perfecting the art of boiling enough tannins out to keep from the water turning too brown, while still leaving enough tannins in to get that *aesthetic* sepia tone. Oreo (my betta) seems to love it. He definitely prefers it to the artificial temple I had in his tank before.

My first tank was very sad. A sponge-bob house, a hollow decorative rock, and a few silk plants. I’m not quite this far along, but now I have three tanks, two 10’s and one 5. My tens have a betta fish in each and a couple of tank mates they get along well with, and a whole bunch of natural decorations, lots of plants that both look great, and made my fish happier and healthier. My 5 is currently cycling but I can’t wait to start putting some fish in it.
Been researching Betta blackwater setups for years, waiting until I could move into an apartment with enough space for a tank. I'm moving next month and can't wait to get started!

I've only just recently got into fish keeping and currently have five neon tetras and five amano shrimp. I lost one tetra due to my filter not pumping air into the water correctly but I moved it around and the others are good now. I only have a 25 litre tank but im happy with it and i do plan on getting a betta fish when im more knowledgeable on the tank

Dear Chris:
Does the tank have a heater? If not, what is the temperature of the water? 78-80º F is optimal for a Betta splendens. Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are most comfortable at 72 °F. If you want your, cherry shrimp to reproduce, I suggest adding a sponge to the intake of the hang-on-the-back filter so it won't suck up the shrimplets. The sponge will also house some microbes on which shrimp may feed.

Ooh blackwater!! So cool... I recently set up a basic betta tank for my female betta, but not blackwater; just a basic planted tank in a 5 gallon marineland portrait with our old favorite Fluval Stratum 😋 it looks awful clean though so maybe I'll add some blackwater elements

My brother saw a bottle of soap in the bathroom, and there was a fish on the front of the bottle, so being a 3 year old kid, he thought it was for the fish and put it in my 10 gallon aquarium while I was asleep, and I lost ALL MY FISH (except the cory catfish idk how) I was 10 at the time and have not had a nano tank since. It was also my first fish tank.
Just something to think about when you buy soap and have little kids/siblings.
