Hey Ryan, very good information in this video. But I want to make sure I understand properly; are you saying that when the heat is high along with high humidity, that you're not going to lose as much soil moisture because of the humidity? And when you mentioned the dew point, does a high dew point at 70 or above mean to water ?? I'd appreciate so I could understand this better because it sounds like a golden nugget of important information . Thanks.
Yes sir, I was out in my front yard at 5:15am setting up my sprinkler this morning. Moved it around the yard till 11:00am when the temps started to rise. Here in STL forecasting 97 degrees for 3 or 4 days this week and nothing lower than 93. Plays heck on my tall fescue with late morning and full afternoon sunshine on the front yard. Looks like I'll be relaxing in my Bark-o-Lounger sipping a cold beer while sucking-up the a/c and keeping an eye out though the living room floor to ceiling window on my fescue. Yes, I knew retiring was going to be a good idea!
Thanks for posting. I am also nervous about the upcoming hot weather and no rain in Illinois. I put down hydratane in late may when it was raining to try to get some protection. Hold on to your hats! Thx!
Yep can confirm, My bluegrass rye grass lawn here unfortunately does best with shorter 30 minute watering every other day I used to do the longer watering to try to promote deeper roots but also with our soil being so dense you can't even get the water into the soil with a long water
I installed a B-Hyve WiFi enabled smart watering sprinkler controller and it (currently) runs six different watering zones. So far it’s been awesome at watering only as needed depending weather and temperatures. This spring I renovated my avenue strip out front of my house and seeded with Ryan Knorr premium rye grass when the soil temps hit 55*F and spread chicken manure compost over it instead of peat moss….. WOW, a few weeks later it’s all super thick, luscious and green! It’s literally the best turf I’ve ever had! When I’m out mowing it (literally every other day to keep up with the growth) I actually have people stop and complement how amazing it looks, or give a thumbs up as they drive by.
Yup. I did the same, whole lawn, two years ago. His elite PRG is amazing stuff. I installed the Rachio 3 for my seven zones (three lawn, four beds) two years ago for Father's Day. Having a smart wifi-enabled controller system is one of the most awesome FD gifts I've ever received.
It is surprising to see the weather turning so hot in the midwest region already, I'm in the Pacific Northwest area (western WA) and we're still in the 60s to 70s for the next 10 days with only 2 days in the low 80s. Not much rain though, only 1 day of rain so I'm going have to roll out the DIY above ground sprinkler.
love your videos. Quick question........is there a good solution to fixing lawn damage were my dog goes pee. Her urine is killing the grass, small patches of lawn damage
I have your shirt Ryan. After a 5th person this season (today) asked if my lawn is real grass, I think I’ve earned my stripes. ⛳️ Thanks for the great content #canadianreelcut
I live in the desert with 120+ heat. I water every third day, and I water hard (.75”+). It will stay green. Trust the process. Roots will grow deeper looking for water
Hey Ryan, quick question, should I apply some drive to my lawn that I overseeded this spring with your TTTF/KBG blend(I love it btw, it came out beautiful) I’m not seeing any crabgrass and I’ve been checking daily but should i apply it just to make sure I don’t have any that I’m missing?
Early morning watering is preferred before 10am is what I do. I am trying to get 1 inch of water per week down and I tried a rain gauge to figure out how much water my sprinkler puts out. It came down to two waterings 30 min each per week. Can be different for your sprinkler. Once in a while I extend or put an extra load just to mix it up.
well I don't have an irrigation system. I have approximately 400 m2 of lawn and a small well that cannot power the irrigation system. can power one large impact sprinkler. Is it possible to irrigate a lawn with such sprinklers?
All my neighbors have the incessant habit that grass needs to be mowed weekly. Every single one of them was out there last Sunday cutting their lawns right before the heatwave kicked in. My grass is currently pushing 9-10” tall and is the only one holding on to its green color after a week of hot temps. We have a whole week of mid 90°F coming and I guarantee there will still be people out mowing their brown lawns this afternoon.
While I agree with you overall, it's also a fine line of breaking a major 1/3 rule once you do cut. I did this a few years ago, and overall, I don't think it helped me much unless you're not going to mow till fall. Also, it's much more difficult to water with the height of the grass, and you'll be forced to double or triple cut plus bag all clippings. I definitely back off on the mowing, but it's OK to keep things tidy.
I mow my lawn twice a week or as needed to not cut more than 1/3 off at one time. I mowed yesterday morning, then used 18-18-18 fertilizer. The temperature here in NJ reached 95 degrees. I’ve been irrigating my lawn heavily in the very early morning & at 3:30 pm. I’m happy to say that my grass is looking incredible! No brown patches or wilting today even though it was 95 again today. 😅
Hear me out, what if you did an experiment where one plot or section was watered early morning, vs one being water at like 10 PM to midnight to see the difference in fungus. Because I’ve tried doing the same and honestly don’t see a difference ha. Similar grass and micro climates in the back vs front too.
I did that last year because I had a few plots I had to water evening in order to get things done. The rye got leaf spot pretty bad but so many factors to consider
Great content, thanks! I've learned so much from watching your channel. I live in Canada, and we are not allowed many of the cosmetic lawn products you use in the US. Do you know if the Liquid Soil Loosener is legal in Canada, or do you know the active ingredients so I can research to see if we are allowed to use it? Also, any tips and tricks for those of us not able to use many the chemical weed killers would be really helpful. Thanks again!
How long do you recommend watering each session? I’m in Western WA and our temps are still around 50’s over night and 70-high 80’s during the day. I’m currently doing 10 minute sessions during sunrise timeframe as well as 5:30PM right as the heat starts to die down 3-4 times a week. I have MP rotator heads too, which you’ve said in the past they take longer to put down the same amount of water.
I've used it for the past 4 summers on my fescue and have no problems. Not saying that there can't be problems, but not for me so far. I can see where it keeps the yard greener when I haven't watered as much compared to my next door neighbor. In fact, I've watched him standing in his yard looking down at the difference, and it looks like he's baffled, lol!
Use proper wetting agents and not Baby shampoo! Wetting agent are neutral electrically, whereas Baby Shampoos and the like are ionized positive or negative and will bind other stuff and prevent things to remain plant available.
Unfortunately my HOA controls the irrigation in our neighborhood and my street comes on between 11p and 1a Tue/Thur/Sat for 30 mins each. Been trying to get them to change it but they won't. Any way to mitigate fungus issues other than throwing down fungicide?
Does anyone have any recommendations for moisture monitors? I live in Sacramento and am watering Monday, Wednesday, Friday putting down 0.3 - 0.5" of water each time. However, there are still spots that are in the sun all day long that are remaining brown. I have fairly sandy soil so deeper watering doesn't seem to be as beneficial as the ground does not retain moisture like it does with clay. My initial thought was to increase to daily watering for less time as the soil tends to dry out so fast in the dry heat. I would like to use a moisture monitor to test how long the ground remains moist after putting down water, but most of the ones I've found online look cheap and inaccurate or are hundreds of dollars. Appreciate any advice anyone has!
@@ryanknorrlawncare I did some tests and adjusting and everywhere is getting 0.3-0.5" per watering which is currently 3 days a week. Problem is the 90-100 degree temps all summer and no rain from April - September
@ryanknorrlawncare from what you said in theis video, it seems y'all have very similar summer temps and conditions we have here in NC. It may be that it takes your area longer to approach the century mark, which we've already done. I'm not sure. Most lawns down here are centipede, bermuda, st. augustine or the DREADED bahia. There are a few that have fescue, and they seem to do fine.

Helps to minimize watering and conserve water 💦. Using cycle and soak method sprinklers set for 4am then 5am on watering schedule days.
