You are educating people how not to get scammed. While you are a business and trying to make a profit, but you are also doing people a service teaching them how not to get scammed. Thank you!
I’m 50 and they were doing this when I was in my 20s , we had a store in the mall I believe called chain reaction, where chains were sold on rolls and you bought by the foot lol
Keep it up, I love when you break down the hustles and other common occurrences (Scams, regular customers, etc.) that pop up when running a pawn business.
Oh and he definitely knew it wasn't real gold. That's my take, he seemed to be way too calm and knowing in my eyes. That's just a guess at the end of the day though haha.
Nah, he would have been more upset if someone actually owed him a thousand bucks. You could see in his expression how stupid he was, especially thinking you wouldn't know the difference between fake and real.
Sir, this has happened to me. I was walking my dog and a man pulled up along side me in his suv. He started talking loudly at me out the passenger window, "My friend, my friend, I am almost out of gas and I desperately need cash, I don't have my wallet or my id so I can't just pawn all my jewelry." He holds out his hand with a gold chain and some rings, "I can give you all this jewelry for $20! You can easily take it to a pawn shop and get your money back" I told him to eff off. This has happened several times to my neighbors as well. Same guy, black suv, middle-eastern-ish accent. So, the guy trying to pawn that stuff, probably handed over his money right before walking into your shop.
Sounds about right. I can make a series just based off the amount of fake jewelry that comes into the shop. The same story every time. Gas stations, freeway entrance, off ramps, and retail parking lots.
They do this is in Florida also,They are Gypsies! Fake gold, fake violin playing, fake accordian playing! They are smart! They post up in shopping centers in nice areas and use their kids as bait to lure in the well off folks to scam them outta money! They travel all over the Eastern US in packs of them!
Hey brother, my wife and I were watching your video on the silver eagles. Just wanted to say great job on picking those up. I wish you and yours all the best.
Yes absolutely. More common than you think. That’s why when we melt the gold an assay will always be lower than the purity stamped. It will make a huge difference on very heavy pieces like chains and bracelets. On smaller items the loss is very minimal.
Not sure if I already commented about this? Last year one of my family members were scammed by the Dubai Gold Scammers in Calgary Canada. My family member bought $5000 in what he thought was real gold. Everything was stamped 18KT the stamps were perfect. He brought it to me and it was allllll fake. About maybe 60+ pieces. Rings, necklaces and bracelets. IF it was real it was about $128,000. I still have it all. I can send pics if you want.
Back in the 1960's, the scam at the time was in large audio speakers in a nice lookin' case. They all drove white vans and were full of speakers for sale. The claim was that some of them were "extras" and they could sell them cheap. This was central Jersey, not far from NYC.
Question: when you did the acid test, did you see the "base metal" on chain after scratching some of the gold off? If not, that means this was high quality "Gold Filled" and NOT "Gold Plated". Curious on this one
Great question. When the product has not been handled much which majority of the times it is like new than the initial deep scratch does now show the underlying base metal which mostly is copper. I will demonstrate this test in an upcoming video. Good rule of thumb is to scratch heavily multiple times to get to the underlying metal.
last year at a highway rest stop someone tried the same scam on me. He comes up to me with tears in his eyes saying he`s out of gas and shows me like 6 pieces gold jewelry wanting to trade for cash.
I was driving from San Diego to Seattle. Some dude in a nice car needed gas money and offered me a gold chain. I had seen the videos before, so I knew right away what was up. He tried some other dude in the parking lot, and I had to yell at the dude it was a scam.
I’m a contractor and have been for over 10 years and I have never been offered gold for payment. I was offered a trailer once and tools all the time but never gold
So what is the way to really tell the real and fake? I’m hearing 24k vs 18k but what is the real truth about real gold jewelry. Where and what do you recommend
I sold a chain once and dude thought it was fake because the clasp spring is actually magnetic and it would move under magnets only at the clasp but not the actual chain.
I saw a chain at a gas station one time that wouldnt hit for a earth magnet had 14k stamped on it the only way i could tell was by taking a flame to it and it charred black
He knew! I actually had that happen to me at a gas station over decade ago. Hell yeah i passed on that this scam has been going around for a long, long time. Also on two different occasions I had drunk women just hop in my 1987 Iroc Z and both times there boyfriends or who ever said,"" you didn't leave the keys in the ignition." Hell no! I never would but t tops off windows down it's easy to jump in. Alway take those keys with you!! The previously owner of the Camaro installed a kill switch so even if i did that car wasnt moving. Gas station encounters! Much Love!
That first guy was trying to put on a brave face, when told it was fake but hes face went bright red.But i only found it. He didn't want to admit he was ripped off. 😂😂😅
yes. I bought 5 rings 50 euros at gas station some foreing looking guys in Finland about 20 years ago. I was scammed but I got my money back when I sold my cco-workers them.Of course I told they weren't gold.
I think he’s embarrassed because he probably bought it thinking it was real, but rather than telling you that and embarrassing himself, he came up with that story
I've had people come up to me on the highway and casino that have tried this. But soon as I take out the magnet the story changes that they changed their mind and decided to keep it and just use their credit card for what they need lmao.
This actually happened to me when i was working at a gas station a few years ago guy asked if i could help with some gas money in return for s gold ring and he kept trying to hand it to me he was also in a really nice car this was in new jersey
So funny I don't know where you're located but I live in southern Oregon. My boss had the exact same thing happened to him a few months ago in Gold Beach town near mine. He was at a gas station when he was asked by a middle eastern guy if you would like to trade some gold for some fuel. He gave the guy $50 the guy gave him a huge Cuban Link and a nice chunky 18 karat gold ring. I brought them both to my house and tested them both both of them are copper
I just subscribed literally right now midway through the video, but I think the value of the 3 pieces if they were real 18kt gold would be about $6,608..?
Very informative video. I’m guessing it’s around 41 grams in weight and about $2300 🤙 I got taken once like 5yrs ago on a gold ring. $50 loss. New Sub 👍
172 Grams weight if it was 18k jewelry, valued at about $9,667.00 USD based on $2,330.80 spot, calculated lower for 18k purity. Curb link chain of that diameter and length probably 75 grams 18k, and the ring 22 grams. 172 grams of 18k gold contains 129 grams of pure 24k gold and 43 grams of other alloying metals like: Silver/Copper/Nickel

It used to work just fine as a currency. Now that people are no longer exposed to it they fall victim to scams. If you have regular exposure to gold you can easily tell fakes.
If it was real gold. Each individual link would be soldered “ Joined “. Also if there is any wear and tear between where two links rub together, it rubs off the gold plating and exposes the base metal. Don’t be fooled by the clasp. In some cases the clasp is real but the rest of the chain is not. Look to see if each link is joined.
They got my elderly father off of interstate 81. He had an old chain 18 karat that my mom brought to him from Italy years ago they forced him to try on the chain, and as they put the fake one around his neck, they took the real one off so quick.
I fell victim to this scam when I was 18 with my first paycheck they got me good at a mall in Tampa fl. We even walked to a jeweler to test it and it checked out it was real. The scammer got me for 300 then I went back to the jeweler with the chain and the jeweler told me this isn’t the one he just checked got me good! Young and dumb the scary thing it’s still going on in most malls and parking lots. Now when I get approached I just laugh at them or report them
I get folks trying to scam me in my town. I tell them its fake to their faces. I am thinking that it would be 235 grams. 18k at todays price of 2300 OZT $12,950.00
Don’t believe a damn word those damn liars just said. Dude was not even mad when he was told that his customer screwed him with fake jewelry for a 1k job. 😂
Police did contact one person of the group, asked for his identification and was shown the suspects drivers license. from ROMANIA. So, good luck identifying anyone.

He dam well Knew that chain was fake .
Thats what I said. He probably stole it and was hoping it was a come up.
Took a fake chain to a pawn shop? Cmon, I think people have common sense that pawnshops will test their gold
I agree. The bearded guy knew.
Always the same reactions here when something turn out to be fake 🤥
You are educating people how not to get scammed. While you are a business and trying to make a profit, but you are also doing people a service teaching them how not to get scammed. Thank you!
Appreciate the kind words. Stay tuned. A lot more educational info coming soon.
These people are from eastern Europe, but YT doesn't like people to sat who they are.
Take a guess !
That guy was lying, no way in hell I’d ever take jewelry over cash.
He was way to calm to have taken that as a payment and not known it was fake. I’d be pissed if a customer paid me with some fake sh!t
His body language screamed “Oh Shit he knows it’s FAKE” 🥴
I’m 50 and they were doing this when I was in my 20s , we had a store in the mall I believe called chain reaction, where chains were sold on rolls and you bought by the foot lol
Dude,I watch you at nite on the big screen & don't comment, just wanted to say I appreciate you & the way you treat you're customers!
Best pawn brother in town . Thank you for the reliable advice my brother 👊

Always checking out you're watches,I'm starting to get a nice collection. I've resisted Smart Watches so far but they're pretty cool too!
Nah, he would have been more upset if someone actually owed him a thousand bucks. You could see in his expression how stupid he was, especially thinking you wouldn't know the difference between fake and real.
We see it all and nothing ever surprises me in this business.

For sure it is an organized group if not several groups. Yes they go on nationwide tours it seems like. "Coming to a city near you"
My friend my friend, yup that’s them 😂🤣😅
This nonsense was going on in the uk about 20 years ago. Guys in fancy cars in the service stations selling fake chains and fake watches.
Love your honesty mate....👍
Thanks 👍

@@thereliablepawnbroker For sure.
That 3rd guy already knew it was fake. And for him to be supposed to be owed a $1000,he didn't seem to care. He was full of shit 😮😮😮
Yeah he said "that's fine" when he heard the news it's fake. Obvious tell right there.
Now i have bought gold chains stamped 14k that are really 11k or 12k have you ever seen that in your shop? Usually this kind jewelry come from india
Yes absolutely. More common than you think. That’s why when we melt the gold an assay will always be lower than the purity stamped. It will make a huge difference on very heavy pieces like chains and bracelets. On smaller items the loss is very minimal.

Do you have an episode thar shows how to identify fake stones?
I wouldn't believe that guy 1 bit 😂😂😂
I believe you misspoke , there isn't a magnet in the clasp , it's a metal spring which is located in real and fake gold chains
Washington County...where is this?
Ventura County, California

Is this made different than normal plated jewelry?
Would love to make a video about plated jewelry to answer some questions. Stay tuned.
If he didn’t know about it, he’d be pissed off and would’ve gotten his chains checked the same day or after. His emotional response was too calm
Just came across your channel. Keep it up nice content. and great info. you got my sub.
Awesome, thank you!
last year at a highway rest stop someone tried the same scam on me. He comes up to me with tears in his eyes saying he`s out of gas and shows me like 6 pieces gold jewelry wanting to trade for cash.
They will use every tactic to scam people. Sad but true. From kids to the elderly.

Anyone receiving that much gold for a payment of $1,000 should have questioned the authenticity.
I think the average IQ drops every year.
LOL
I'm in North Carolina and they doing the same thing here I can tell if gold is real or fake just by looking at it
Nationwide. Unfortunately many people can't.

I sold a chain once and dude thought it was fake because the clasp spring is actually magnetic and it would move under magnets only at the clasp but not the actual chain.
Yes the clasp will have a spring and the magnet will pick it up. The buyer should have known better.
Hey another great video
I have a neodymium magnet on my keychain. Handy to have.
Very smart. That is the only magnet I would trust to test for precious metals such as gold and silver.
ya i got some guy driving an suv asking for gas money at costco, offer me a gold ring, i said no.
Smart Move. Spread the word.
How long do we have to answer?
One week from the date of this video which will be Friday the 3rd of May. Make sure to subscribe to see who the winner is. Good Luck!
Your absolutely correct. You should have seen what it looked like with the same nonsense back during the late 70s.
I can only imagine. I think it is more rampant now.
I saw a chain at a gas station one time that wouldnt hit for a earth magnet had 14k stamped on it the only way i could tell was by taking a flame to it and it charred black

I understand it's probably gold plated, but what's the underlying metal? I'm guessing Silver, Lead or Brass. A magnet won't stick.
This better than Pawn Stars
They do that out here in CT too same excuse needs gas with kids in car 😂
One of many excuses. I’ve heard it all bro.
Wow this is crazy😮

Yes indeed. Sounds like the usual scam.
They got me on beech 7 yrs ago I paid like $50 bucks I used a lighter to test it thought was good but nope.
This scam has been going on for awhile now and seems like it is wide spread now.
They do the same thing here in NYC, my boy got caught after I told him to be careful. 😂😂😂
Damn. He should know better than to scam innocent people.
He did a job for them. Yeah, right. The look on his face when he finds out its fake doesn't even flinch.
I just subscribed literally right now midway through the video, but I think the value of the 3 pieces if they were real 18kt gold would be about $6,608..?

Well said. Many of these pieces are fresh out of the mold. Look clean and shiny but the most important rule for them is scoping out who they approach.
I found 2 rings in a dudes storage unit. Stamped 18K - Did not attract magnets. Were still fake. Would have been thousands. That was a bummer.
They got my elderly father off of interstate 81. He had an old chain 18 karat that my mom brought to him from Italy years ago they forced him to try on the chain, and as they put the fake one around his neck, they took the real one off so quick.
I always feel bad when elderly people walk in and tell me these stories. Seems like that age group is most vulnerable to these scam artists.
bro - no need to test the products - just look at the customer - if they look dumb, tell them no
That second dude is homies with them people, he didn’t seem bothered at all.
Many don't.
I fell victim to this scam when I was 18 with my first paycheck they got me good at a mall in Tampa fl. We even walked to a jeweler to test it and it checked out it was real. I get folks trying to scam me in my town. I tell them its fake to their faces. I am thinking that it would be 235 grams. 18k at todays price of 2300 OZT $12,950.00
Stay tuned for the follow up video this week.
So many dishonest people.
$6,800 in gold if real at 18 kt and the weight looks to be around three ounces and a half of 18kt so the melt would be about 6,800

I would say for all 3 combined, around 5.5 troy ounces of gold and maybe around $12,000 worth in metal price?

The gold given for payment makes no sense ,whichever way you look at it
I believe him. He asked how much is it worth? He's not trying to scam you.
What a sad sad world we live in man far out
It’s getting rough out there. Just need to be more vigilant.
They all knew it was fake stuff. I wouldn't go near jewellery or watches from anyone other then an legit big name dealer
He was part of the scammers for sure
No he was not straight up
How stupid do you have to be to go sell it to someone that their job is make sure they don't get scammed with fake gold
Seen it all bro 🤷🏻♂️
It’s funny him and his wife and dad got arrested for doing that lol
Nowadays is seems like all they get a slap on the wrist and let go.
I’ll say the value would be about $6500 for 3 pieces in 18kt gold
Make sure to stay tuned. Follow up video coming this week.
85 grams $4800.... If that was18k plated would it pass the 18k acid test?

Don’t believe a damn word those damn liars just said. Dude was not even mad when he was told that his customer screwed him with fake jewelry for a 1k job. 😂
The fake stuff is almost always stamped 18K!!!
Good content bro. My guess is 49 grams, $2650
Thanks bro. Make sure to stay tuned. Follow up video coming this week.
Nah, they’re embarrassed after someone else told them it’s fake… 150 grams total 120g/ chain and 30g/ ring total retail $18,500
