  • Airedale Terrier is a dog breed of the terrier type that originated in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire and was created to catch otters and rats in the region between the Aire and Wharfe Rivers. An intelligent, tough dog, the Airedale terrier tolerates pets it grows up with and generally gets along well with other dogs and children.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Airedale Terrier that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Terrier Dogs
    Weight: 40 to 65 pounds
Height: 21 to 23 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 10-13 years
The Airedale is a hard-working, independent, and athletic dog with a lot of drive, energy, and stamina. He is prone to digging, chasing, and barking - behaviors that come naturally to terrier breeds. These traits can be frustrating to owners unfamiliar with the Airedale personality.
If you are thinking about an Airedale, consider whether you are willing to live with his propensity toward potentially undesirable behaviors - and whether you want to take on the challenges that go along with his independent nature. If you decide you are, you will be delighted with the Airedale's active, fun-loving, even comical attitude.
The Airedale is a lively breed, and he needs plenty of activity. Don't leave him alone for long periods of time, or he is likely to become bored, which leads to the aforementioned destructive behaviors. Keep training interesting and fresh - repetitive exercises will become a bore to the Airedale. He is best motivated by treats and other positive reinforcement methods; drill-and-jerk training methods should be avoided. A reliable watchdog, the Airedale takes pride in protecting his family. He can be a fierce guardian but is friendly with his family and friends.

My Airedale has since passed. She was awesome. A lover, a mind of her own if she saw a squirrel or fox, but so darn smart. She was enrolled in two month-long training classes. She would heel, sit, speak & ring a small bell on the back door handle when she wanted to go out. I started early by brushing her teeth every Sat morning with my electric toothbrush & dog toothpaste. We both sat on the floor and she looked forward to it. They do have lots of energy, mine was smaller at 45#. She had a wire dog cage & her bed was in there too; she loved it (her space). She was easily potty trained, socialized with other dogs at her training class around 12 weeks. She loved to run & be chased or fetch a ball. She only destroyed one pair of new shoes. Still miss her 💜 There were quite a few Airedale’s in my neighborhood - one of the owners rented out an indoor dog facility for a holiday party. The dogs had a blast!

When we adopted our Riley and first brought him home in the car he was very reluctant to get in the car... When he realised that the car meant going to fun places often to meet other Airedales and after he was coming home again, he now can't wait to get in the car. If I'm working in the driveway, he will often (along with Daisy) sit happily in the back of our station wagon.

Our two year old Airedale, Chesty named after generel Chesty Puller is our fourth 'dale. He is way too smart for his own good. Can jump four to five feet to catch a thwown toy. Gets along with our Scotty and Jack Russel mix, they were here first. If you know how to socialize a dog they are great. A most loving, loyal friend. They are funny as all get all. Only bad thing is when we have to give the final good bye one cries like a baby. I still love Ziggy, Dale and Dart Man. Am tearing up.

@@HarrisonHollers Well, I suppose any dog is potentially aggressive but if you train them well then they are great family dogs. They’re smart working dogs so they do better being an active part of the family. They’re not a leave them at home and forget about them dog. Bo is my third and probably last Airedale as I'm getting on now. They are fantastic dogs, but be warned, some need serious patience and dedication on the owner's part in their teenage months.... they have minds of their own and a high prey drive. Think twice before taking them on as a first dog.. If you have what it takes take one on. Any doubts...don't or you'll end up being owned by an Airedale. Ha ha!

We have had Airedales in our family for over a century. My father was brought up with a dog called Jock in the 1930s. At that time Hitler was just seen as a joke and I have a photo of Jock doing a “Heil Hitler” salute. He would also roll over on his back if you asked him to “die for King and Country”
I have had three Airedales since 1982 and two have lived to be nearly sixteen. Great characters, wonderful with children, would always turn the other cheek in an initial confrontation with another dog but woe betide the other dog should it become nasty!
Another interesting thing was one of the Bitches Lena was becoming a little slow and stiff aged fifteen and runs down the farm road to the lake had turned into walks. If a rabbit or fox appeared it would be “Whatever, been there done that, not enough energy to chase today!” Arrived at the lake and she suddenly became animated charging around , very excited, nose to the ground, so much so that I had to catch her as I thought she may have a heart attack if she carried on.
She died peacefully later that year and I was down at the lake a year later and suddenly an otter appeared. Never seen one here before so the Otterhound genes that had been dormant for fifteen years suddenly were activated!

@@jameslopez4446 my Airedale is a show dog and has dispatched an otter recently, she frequently hunts rats and cats that enter our yard. And I’m absolutely confident she’d take on bigger game if given the chance. Ever seen a dog dispatch an otter? Know how tough those things are?
She can trot around the show ring, AND do what she was bred to do. That is an ideal dog.
Showing is not a “beauty contest” it’s evaluating breeding stock, seeing which dogs fits the standard and then the dog wins the class, gets their Ch, or GCH etc.
Those dogs are also almost always health tested. Yes workability is very important and I think that ALL Airedale’s should have a HIGH prey drive, immense courage, and grit. But I also think they should conform to the standard in some ways, as it’s there for a reason.
I do think that Airedale’s have dramatically lost their grit, and prey drive. And there are some breeders working to keep it alive.

the breed is resistant to distemper, jumps very well, mine jumped on a children's wooden training ground, jumps in height above 1.5 meters and in length more than 2 meters, if trained, it swims very well, can be a hunter, but only with appropriate training.
the dog is smart, unlike breeds such as Dobermans and Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, which have no intelligence at all.easy to train.

Maybe as a puppy, he got a few items that were expensive to replace (two point and white cameras and a cell phone if I recall) but after teething he’s never been a big chewer. Never was a digger, either. He’s become clingy in his older age (11) and can be a crybaby. Smart as hell, can learn anything, incredible nose and willingness. Sneaky, headstrong, willfully oblivious sometimes. But loving, funny, and completely committed to protecting his hearth and home. Absolutely will not back down from a fight once the matter has been pushed, although he’s better at avoiding the troublemakers and taking up for the underdogs. Loves kids, is completely tolerant of their attentions and gentle to a fault if around small ones and the elderly. He’s my darling Woodrow and there will never be another like him.

If you get a pup, they are harmless. I had cats, bunnies and chickens. He never harmed them. I had 2 adult cats when Arie came as a pup. When He was older the baby bunnies and chickens came. Later on we had 2 other kittens. He never harmed them but would chase that was not his animal. So remember: a pup will get used to your animals. Teach them gently not to hurt by saying no firmly. When you want to add more animals later on, get babies. We also got a policedog in the household and was not used to other animals. We made it posdible they could see and sniff and later on he tolerate our animals and would not harm. Just take your time to teach them they all belong to you and take care of each other. Never abuse an Airedale because he will never trust or obey you again.

The pics were not all of Airedale Terriers. And Beautiful Joe was said to be a mix of a Fox Terrier and Bull Terrier. NOT an Airedale Terrier. Just sayin'.... Get the pics and facts straight, please.

My family had a amazing Airedle my Father got him
When we were very young under 5years there were
Three kids and my mom &
    Dad our Airedale was such
    an amazing dog his name
was Ringo Star he was a show
dog he was so regal beautfiul
    Wonderfull temperment brave
    Loyal very protective with us
Kids and our hole family. And
If need be would not take a back step to any I mean any other bread when if came to
a porly behaived bread. or some of those anti- socail
    Breads or just ill temperd
    Breads or mixed bread and
or poor dog owners you know
    the type of irresponceable dog
Owner who doesn' t really care. Any way our Ringo wpuld watch over us kids so intently
    Like a secret service agent
    Watchs over the president of
the United S tates. Such an intelligent strong, brave, & loyal bread. Like I mentioned
RINGO would never take a backward step to any other
Dog bread when i came to protecting us childern and fami ly from ill temperd Dogs and people for that matter. Such a smart dog , the few times he did fight other dogs was always a last resort. But don't
Cross our Ringo he fought like
A lion when it came to protecting us kids.He was never ever on a leash even when going to see the Vet . Would
met us kids up the street everyday same time of day
to greet us on our way home
    from school ,what a dog!!!
He did that for well over17 years!. Not joking! Ringo Star
Lived 18 years 7 months. Yes
    That's right! 18 years 7 months
Amazing .... we findly had to put him gently to sleep from old age he at the end had Arthitis and lost his sight
    at 18 seven months later
my dad tokd us we had to put
Him down.I held him while my
    Mentor and boss gave him
    His injection Dr. Bronschwag.
the owner and founder of the Marin pet Hospital. In San Rafael, Marin county California. One of the greatest
Vetenarians of that time its where I worked for ten years.
    Through middle school and
    High school. Ringo Star
1970 to 1988 now holds today
As far as Dr. Bronschwagg has
    Known for a standard Airedale
    18 & a half years old stands
    Today still the oldest Airedale
on record !!!well, at least in California!!! Ive owen quite a
Few breads in my 57 years
and I can tell you unaquificlly
No other dog bread even comes close. Miss you buddy!!!
Excuse my poor spelling and grammer. Was trying to type
and drive on my way to lake Tahoe from marin but felt I had
to write a commet.on our amazing dog and bread...

First couple days they will mess with the cat but then the cat will show who is boss. My airdale tested the cats but quickly found out thats not a good idea now he avoids them. A airdale will deffintly run into anything in their property and protect but when they learn its not a threat they become lap dogs.

I think it depends. We had two cats and a small rabbit, and our Airedale was nothing but gentle with them, even when he was in a playful mood. I’d still be very cautious, though.

Why is a wire haired fox terrier pictured as an Airdale? Why have poor representations of a fantastic breed pictured, poor ears, poor tail sets? I understand there are fantastic pet quality representations, and not all pictured are show quality, however soon of your representations should not have been used.

The 50 to 70 pounds is a bit low on today's scale...my original stud dog Max (1975-1988) weighed in at right at 100 pounds, an OOrang style...my new pup Millie's parents were 90 pounds on the stud dog and 75 for the bitch. The Farm Kennel where I picked her up also has a stud that is between 130-140 pounds, largest one I have ever came across...
