  • The Airedale terrier is a medium-sized dog that usually weighs between 50 and 65 pounds, though it can weigh up to 80 pounds. Height for males is usually about 24 inches, with females being slightly shorter at 22-23 inches. There is an Oorang strain of Airedales that weighs in the 80 to 120-pound range. This strain of the breed was developed back in the 1920s. Airedale puppies typically weigh about 10 pounds and are 10 inches tall at the age of 8-10 weeks. Airedales don’t usually reach their full adult size until between one and two years of age.
    If you want a dog who...
    Is medium to large, sturdy, and athletic;
    Is energetic, yet when well-trained and well-exercised, can also be calm and dignified;
    Is exceptionally versatile - can learn and do almost anything;
    Makes a sensible guardian (some individuals).
    An Airedale Terrier may be right for you.
    If you don't want to deal with...
    Vigorous exercise requirements;
    Rowdiness and exuberant jumping, especially when young;
    Destructiveness and barking when bored or not exercised enough;
    Providing enough socialization so his natural protectiveness doesn't become aggression;
    Aggression toward other animals - chasing instincts;
    Strong-willed mind of his own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge;
    Frequent trimming and clipping of the wiry coat.
    An Airedale Terrier may not be right for you.

    “You can’t just stick him outside and hope that he’ll be quiet and entertain himself.” No lies were told.

    Airedales are a terrier personality in a big dog.. This makes them real goofballs, lots of fun, but also leads to some Marmaduke moments.. Watch out for them around small furniture --their brains say they can fit easily under a coffee table, but if he gets up suddenly so will.the table. They'll learn, but there is a learning curve. Also, they do like body contact and like to cuddle, but not to be held.

      Truth! Neither of my dales like hugs. They cuddle a little but want their space.
