Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: King John Op. 111 (1941)

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the most promising Italian composers of his generation. Castelnuovo wrote music inspired by many Shakespearean plays; one of them is King John. A wartime work, the overture is mainly inspired by the play’s closing speech that praises the earliest beginnings of individual freedom; these beginning with the creation of the Magna Carta in 1215 to protect the liberties from the nobles - and much later the people’s - from the despotic rule of a tyrant, hence King John. The work, dedicated to Babirolli, was intended as a morale boosting piece for the Allied troops.
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco fue uno de los compositores italianos más prometedores de su generación. Castelnuovo escribió música para varias obras de Shakespeare; una de ellas siendo King John. Una obra de guerra, la obertura se inspira en el discurso final de la obra teatral que alaba los inicios de las libertades individuales; estos habiendo comenzado con la creación de la Carta Magna en 1215 para proteger las libertades de la nobleza - y mucho después aquellas del pueblo - de los caprichos del tirano, entonces el rey Juan sin Tierra. La obra, dedicada a Barbirolli, fue prevista como una pieza destinada a incrementar la moral en las tropas aliadas.
