I love your videos! The little permanent green arrow for right turns is also found down in Bavaria, where I am, but not so frequently. I come from the US, where “right on red after stop” is the law of the land, in every state with the exception of New York City, where signs at the city boundaries inform you in words that right on red is not allowed. Otherwise there is no little green arrow, like here in Germany.

Thanks Jeff! "Right on red after stop" is new to me. I did not know that. Fascinating.

The „green arrow“ was invented in the GDR. It has been adopted to whole Germany after the reunion. Fun fact: as people in western Germany are not really aware how that arrow works, a sign with instruction is often added to the arrow symbol. People raised in the GDR know the rule: if the light is red, you have to stop and check if it save to turn right. If so, you may turn right with caution. Treat that arrow as a stop sign.

The right of way sign always reminds me of a fried egg.

The „yellow diamond sign“ is the sign „Vorfahrtstrasse“. This concept is irritating to all non german drivers. In Germany we start with the term „rechts vor links“, which means, the car from coming from the street to my right takes precedence. The confusing part is that is rule applies to a fairly big road, too. To overrule this, you need to put up that special sign (yellow diamond) to declare the traffic on this road comes first. The roads coming from the sides need to put on the „give way“ sign then. Has nothing to do with human logic, but with german ideas to regulate everything…

Yes, it caught me out at the start. But I am now 'eingedeutscht' 😉
