I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one lol. Friendship is faster than the speed of light and transcends the emptiness of space. My space ship isn't powered by space-age sci-fi physics, it is powered by My Little Ponies, Carebears, rainbows, great friends, and the smiles of every child in the Milky Way lol.
On the Monkey World it is called the Fling Shit Drive. They have a Toiletstein-Flushen bridge and when your ship flies near the bum-gate, it is grabbed by an enormous paw and flung through space.
Fdev has announced that Horizons will be free and part of the base game from 27th October, so you could buy only the base game now and spend no extra money(unless you want some ship paint jobs that they will be giving people who already own it.)
I can’t wait mate. I’ve been playing for 3 weeks. No horizons. I’ve unlocked and A rated the Corvette. I’m doing so I’ve unlocked the permit for Sirius. That’ll make engineering a bit easier. I have just a few days to wait until I can buy the prismatic shields. All I’m doing now is making more units until Tuesday the 27th October.
Huh, guess I should go look at my liveries then. I didn't know they gave prior Horizons owners a consolation prize for being suckered into paying for it...

This is an excellent beginners guide. Packed full of tips and information that would take 50 hours rather than 50 minutes to figure out. Everything was explained well in a way that new players can understand and with many added side details for understanding the why's and how's. Some people enjoy figuring things out for themselves. In huge and detailed games like this I just feel bogged down and like I can't get the full experience of the game until I learn more. This video answered a lot of questions for me as I only have a few hours of real play time. I feel like there is so much for me to try next time I log in and that i actually understand the basics of making money and traveling around to different systems. Well done! I'm happy to subscribe to this channel and play more ED!
Exactly the video I needed! I've just come back to the game after two years, and god damn I needed a refresher EDIT: Holding the A/B/X/Y buttons will show you your current command combos, super helpful
Just wanted to say thanks for putting this together. I've always been super scared to get this game cos everyone says you need 1000+ hours of playtime before you can even download it, let alone play. But your explanation made it super accessible and I'm looking forward to finally getting into it 😀
Watched this after doing the intro tutorial mission, and it all makes perfect sense. Great overview, thank you! Last time I played Elite, it was vector wireframe graphics on a Commodore C64. I couldn’t dock to save my life. I’m happy to see we have a docking computer now, but the PTSD from approaching the rotating rectangular opening is still present 😂

Nice video for startets. Congratulations. I just want to add some things: 1.: If you are not able to see the exclusion zone in supercruse you are to slow. You have to be 0.15c fast. 2.1.: Switching between combat and analysis mode is a good thing. You can not get a fine for shooting in the no fire zone because you hit the wrong button while you are scanning FSD wakes. 2.2.: You need fewer firegroups. You can assign your scanners/miningtools in the same firegroup to the same buttons as yout weapons. A weapon will only work in combat mode and a scanner only in analysis mode. For example my fighting vessel has for combat mode the weapons and a firegroup for looting the engineering materials with drones. To use the scanners I would need one firegroup more. With the difference between the two modes I can live with only two firegroups because i also assign them to the weapons firegroup. I only have to live with the error message in the upper right info-screen. Keep up the good work! Commander Nikodemus
I wish I watched this when I started Elite. This has all the tips I learned over time packed into one video, like the 7 second rule and how to glide successfully.
Finally! A beginner guide that doesn't focus on telling me how to get to end game as quickly as possible. A video that teaches me fundamentals. I've learned so much from this video and it's like the 6th beginner guide I've tried. I especially appreciate the UI tips. I'm paused half way through the video to write this after you showed there are TWO mini maps. Mind blown lol. I don't understand why these other videos want you to skip to end game. I'm have a blast just being poor and doing crap cargo missions in my sidewinder. This video has already been immensely valuable. Time to finish it up lol.

Dude! This helped me so much! I absolutely adore games like this. I am actually studying to become an Astro-Physicist so having fun while learning at the same time is wonderful. Thank you so much for guiding me and many others on how to play this game properly.
CMDR Geist, I've got to be honest, this came about 3 weeks too late for me. That said, I watched lots of your videos once I decided to buy ED. They certainly helped with figuring out the basics, plus much more stuff that I've not yet tried in the game. So for that, thankyou. My approach so far has been to hit the courier missions in the starter systems, then once confident enough, move further out and run passenger missions and the occasional sightseeing tour in my trusty Asp X. I'm not hardcore playing the game 24/7, job and family prevent that, nor am I too concerned about 'maximising profits' etc, but as of yesterday I bought and outfitted a DBX to dabble in Exploration, did a 50 jump loop trip and nothing went wrong. At the end of the play session I bought a Python, and still have 70 million credits. That's going to be my mining ship when I decide to go mining. Thanks for all your help so far, guys like you and Hawkes make the learning curve far less daunting. All the best.
i have been playing this game for a couple of months now and although most of the things ive already learnt this is the most concise and understandable tutorial ive come across. i hope you have many more on specific parts of the game im all ears. Well done

Thanks for telling me about that mini radar. I always hate jumping into a system and try to find the vector point to the next system. I usually find myself spinning and looking through the windows until I spot that yellow ring! Great information for starting commanders! O7
Why am I watching this? I just bought my first anaconda yesterday. I already know this stuff yet you make it interesting to sit down and re learn it all for 50 minutes.
Back when I didn't know what the yellow circles around celestial bodies were, I used to try to limbo under them without dropping from supercruise. After a while, it finally clicked with me that the yellow line *was* the point where I'd drop from supercruise 😅

I'm playing this game in VR with a Logitech x52. Amazing experience. I went straight for the combat route, went from the puddle jumper to a Viper Mark 3, then to the amazing Viper Mark 4, now I'm in the vulture which we didn't get along at first but I quickly learned pulse lasers and flying inside of the blue throttle zone is my golden ticket. Now I'm saving up for the alliance chieftain. I just find it relaxing in VR to pop some space pirates wherever I go lol. Also glad the insurance is fair in this game, so it doesn't really hurt you too much you just go out and PVP if you wanted to. I'm nowhere near that point yet, but it's more of an incentive than let's say Eve online which you have to grind everything back again. Also I have a microwave as one of my one dot optional internals that way I can cook my Hot pockets while I'm in frameshift drive.
I'm sure it's been said and pendatic though it is... "livery" is pronounced LIV-ERY. Like "liver" the internal organ with an "ee" on the end. Not LIVE-ery. The more you know!

This is a very good guide for beginners and there are a ton of guides out there. After 8 months on PS4 I'm switching to PC so I thought I'd give this a look. Elite can be really overwhelming at first and this does an excellent job of focusing on what you should know at the beginning.
Bro you are by far best at teaching this game to new players I tried the other youtubers videos and they spend 80% of their videos cracking jokes and not getting to the info. Thanks for this video.
Lil addition: be aware, your ship keeps going while in map mode. The only time your ship'll stop automatically is when you hit ESC on your keyboard. 7 sec rule works really good if you bind something to 75% throttle. Just hit the key/button when you're at 8-7sec. I've also tried at 80% (with +-10% bindings) and it seemed to work most of the time. Good job btw. coming back after over a year and i was forgetting so much lol. It helped. Also gotta add: not a big deal at all, but we say "Lee-vry"/"Li-vr-ee" and not "Lie-vry" ;) ♥
I've had this game for about a year in my steam library and finally decided to try it. It seemed overwhelmingly complicated. Thanks for making it a bit easier with this vid!
Two types of space bodies that scare me when dropping out is a white dwarf and black hole. White dwarf was one of the first non station deaths that I have had in this game. I dropped out into the cone out of hyperspace.
as for docking at stations or bases, it can be easier on the players nerves when the ship has equipment that allows for auto-docking. when the docking request is granted, slow down to 0 and the automated docking guidance system kicks in.
I found the best advice I was given when I first started out was to learn docking the ship manually, it helped me understand the ship controls. After a while you really do pick things up. It’s a great game as you learn.
I just started playing last night. It was awesome. I took off and landed without using the landing computer thing like you said and it was awesomely stressful. The first time was a huge failure we don’t need to talk about it but after that it was great! Thanks for your vids.

@Sparkyjuice Gaming Eve Online was awesome... It still is in a way.. it's really deep, but therein also lies the problem.. getting into Eve now probably won't let you experience the real Eve but it's capped f2p now so go have a look...
Now I have the problem I can probably write a review to Eve bc I have played it very much, partly as f2p, partly in the pay version (more ships, better skills,... for 10-15€/month, or free with ingame currency).
But I have never played ED so I can absolutely not compare it either....

Frame shift drive?? Don't you mean Friendship drive. That's what I hear when I engage it. ;p Or as I like to call it 'The Carebear engine'.
It is written Frame Shift, but it is pronounced Friendship drive.
That´s exactly what I thought it sounds like ( Ive had the game just over a week . Never had the nerve to say in case I looked a total idiot ! LOL !!!
I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one lol. Friendship is faster than the speed of light and transcends the emptiness of space.
My space ship isn't powered by space-age sci-fi physics, it is powered by My Little Ponies, Carebears, rainbows, great friends, and the smiles of every child in the Milky Way lol.
lol i had people mad at me because i kept asking what the hell a friendship drive was and why it was making me move faster then light
On the Monkey World it is called the Fling Shit Drive. They have a Toiletstein-Flushen bridge and when your ship flies near the bum-gate, it is grabbed by an enormous paw and flung through space.
Side note: The best term for don't be afraid in sci fi is still "DON'T PANIC" in a nice friendly and confidence inspiring font.

All I’m doing now is making more units until Tuesday the 27th October.
ooh so thats why i have horizons i was wondering why i could suddenly land on planets
Huh, guess I should go look at my liveries then. I didn't know they gave prior Horizons owners a consolation prize for being suckered into paying for it...

I spent my first month or so playing Solo before cautiously switching across to Open. Haven't noticed much difference so far ... although it sure is crowded around Jameson! :-)
Best explanation of starting out I have seen on YT by far.
Best "Starting Out" tutorial I've seen yet. Looking forward to putting it into action
I've just come back to the game after two years, and god damn I needed a refresher
EDIT: Holding the A/B/X/Y buttons will show you your current command combos, super helpful
Oh my goodness this brought back trauma… :P
Glad to know it isn't just me that has a primal fear of pulsars and black holes despite encountering them in game hundreds of times.
I love your attitude:“I don’t care if i can jump 5 times as far, that shit scary. So it can go die for all I care. It’s pretty do“
First tip is gold, space is scary. I encountered a Neutron Star when taking a shortcut about a week into the game and it was genuinely terrifying.
Even more so in VR.
When mining in planetary rings in VR, it's always REALLY scary when getting into the rings.
@@Erenzilable I can imagine, you're a braver commander than me. The vague sense of dread that comes when playing on my old TV is enough to keep me going, if I start to feel comfortable at least I know there's a way to recapture that noob feeling of pure terror :)
best part of the game for me are weird space stuff.
One thing is missing is the Music.
It's rarely plays, having hours on mining around dusty asteroids only once a proper music triggered.
Gave me chills lol, it should be more frequent than it is.
Fam. I was not ready for the first neutron star I come out into.
I made my first 700M by harvesting neutrons and black holes in the neutron star fields that are above and below the galactic plane. They're scary, but you get numbed from having death constantly looking over your shoulder. I just flew from the bubble to Jacques and sold it there. You can find the field of neutron stars with the filters.
damn this was so packed with information i didn't want to miss a second of it! well done. I'm a new player and the discovery of all there's to do in this game has been a lot of fun
Man, this video was exactly what I needed. Just got this on Game Pass and was so overwhelmed. This’ll be bookmarked to reference. Thanks!
got back into the game last friday, and i’m loving it! i have done the tutorials that frontier has provided in-game, but i’ve been looking for a youtuber to help me out through the game, and this was what i was looking for! awesome video dude you just got a sub !
Nice video for startets. Congratulations.
I just want to add some things:
1.: If you are not able to see the exclusion zone in supercruse you are to slow.

I wish I watched this when I started Elite. This has all the tips I learned over time packed into one video, like the 7 second rule and how to glide successfully.
Don't know why I'm watching this, I'm currently half way to sagittarius A in my stripped down conda. Guess that says something good about your videos.

@@filipbitala2624 wasn’t my experience. Sorry dude.
CMDR Geist,
I've got to be honest, this came about 3 weeks too late for me.
You're wrong about one thing: "KGB FOAM" is a superior acronym to anything whatever the context. Even if the letters don't fit.
i have been playing this game for a couple of months now and although most of the things ive already learnt this is the most concise and understandable tutorial ive come across. i hope you have many more on specific parts of the game im all ears. Well done

Just came back to the elite universe after a 30 plus year hiatus ( played on the Amiga! ). Downloaded the Xbox version yesterday and lost the whole evening immersing myself into space time and the glorious graphics. . Thrustmaster Hotas on the way .... @@incubus1195 how was the learning curve? The game itself had a fairly steep curve however wasn't TOO difficult to get used to. Assuming it's the same as the game itself?

Please continue these types of videos. I recently just got this game from the steam summer sales and these videos help out soo much. Normally I wouldn't be able to watch a whole 50 minutes continuously but the style of this video made it so easy to watch it fully and enjoy it at the same time.
Would love it if you continued these tutorial type videos. 😁
Coming back after a few years (this time on PC). Good refresher. o7
I put this game in my wish list months ago on Steam, and it came up free on Epic Games last week. I've watched a ton of video's and by far you have given the clearest information. Thank you for this.
12:26 My second time docking (using the docking computer) it flew me into the side of the station lmao.... When it happened I was on discord with my friend who has played this game since it came out and he was hella surprised and said it had never happened to him, First experience 10/10 lol
I remember doing that with my first beluga and it got stuck in the mail slot whilst i went to get water.
I have the same phobia. It is a big reason why this game is so great. Anytime a vr game can trigger a phobia induced panic attack it is a great game in my book
Looks like the best time to get the game. Steam discount, great tutorial video.. I hope my old rig can pull this off. Thanks for a longer than usual video!
Has anyone told you yet about the great voice you have?
Nice video... I’ve been playing a few days and had most of the basics down, but hearing someone talk me through it reinforced a lot of the basic functionality. Much appreciated!
First time watching and i heard “Its me, the spatula beast”
I thought he said spatula geese. As weird as that sounded, it was the last thing i understood and i play eve.
Secondary radar is also commonly referred to as the Compass or space compass
Every other week now when I play elite there’s always something that makes me say
“Wait.”
“Was I always in the kiddie pool?”

This game is so big and complicated but so far I’m enjoying it.
45:10 NGL, I do the "Honey, I'm home!" sometimes too.
Thanks for telling me about that mini radar. I always hate jumping into a system and try to find the vector point to the next system. I usually find myself spinning and looking through the windows until I spot that yellow ring! Great information for starting commanders! O7
Even though I've been playing for years, I still think this video is worth the watch. Mostly because I'll watch all your Elite vids but hey ho.
Yeah he's my favorite Elite youtuber because he's as useful as someone like Hawkes but 1000 times less unbearable to listen to.
Just bought Elite on the PS4 and been watching a bunch of beginner videos. This one is the most comprehensive I’ve seen so far. Thanks!

Thvideo is just perfect for me! I've got less than 10 hours into the game, and this was a great tutorial - very concise for those of us just starting out. Thank you, very much!
Great video! Only nitpick that probbably should have been covered is fuel usage and how you use the same fuel for normal space, supercruise and FSD jumps. I know we are all proud of the fuel rats but lets not give them more work than they need :P
CMDR Sepulcher, i'm reaching my 800h of gameplay and your videos were my first contact with ED knowledge.
Everyone who has money should support his Patreon because of no ads. And good help to start playing Elite Dangerous.
Best ED basics tutorial for new players i´ve seen in all these years. Keep it up.
as for docking at stations or bases, it can be easier on the players nerves when the ship has equipment that allows for auto-docking. when the docking request is granted, slow down to 0 and the automated docking guidance system kicks in.
