As you say, I’d check the gear linkage itself. The short shift has only changed the front to back change, the left to right will remain standard. I’d guess that this is the linkage that is causing the problem, maybe clean and live that linkage first.
Hello,I have a Punto mk2b 1.4 16v with a 5speed gearbox and despite its millage(312.000km) I think it has the same gearbox the 1.2 16v has and I can say it feels great!I really like your videos, keep it up!
@@Quattro_JoeBtw I am subscribed to your channel too,I really like your videos!I hope you guys keep it up because nowadays there is almost no content about Fiat Punto mk2s.....
@@Project40Cars fair enough. I’d be looking at changing any bushes in the linkage (although I’m not familiar with your Fiat have only ever fiddled with BMW’s).
I think your lovely salted UK roads have caused you some heartache there. No issues on Irish roads like that. Your linkage definitely needs lubing or maybe replacing. Your shifter not centring is the issue to Your vagueness imo. Fix that and you’ll fix the feel of the shift. Cheers for the shoutout. Much appreciated 👍👍👍
Yup salt and Italian cars do not mix :D, I agree I think it's time to replace the linkages, shouldn't be too hard of a job...not every bolt can be rusted in......
@Project40Cars definitely not an easy task to find. The hgt even during its hey days are pretty rare. We used to have a couple of these in Singapore but I'm quite certain they have all been scrapped. Does the hgt share the same gearbox with certain alfas of the same era? U might have better chance looking for alfa gearbox bits if they are the same!

Good shout, I’ll take a look at the other linkage tomorrow
That’s a very nifty and easy little short shift, I think you need new cables but be warned they might be hard to get now
Lots of research to do today.

Thank you for the support! the 1.2 gearbox is so nice!
The 1.2 16v box is a 6 speed. It’s a different one to the 1.4.
@@Quattro_Joe Yeah the sporting versions have a 6speed gearbox, but the non sporting have a 5speed gearbox
@@Quattro_JoeBut I must admit I am not completely sure if the 1.4 16v gearboxes are the same with the 1.2 versions

Have you changed the gearbox oil yet? I can’t remember.
It made a decent improvement on my BMW manuals especially with a new bush.
Yeah changed it July/August last year. I need to replace the seal on the gearbox as it’s leaking a bit.

I believe your bushings and linkages needs to be changed. It should help
Agreed, now I just need to track down a place that sells them, appearing to be harder to find than I expected.

That's a great idea! It's pretty likely that they share the same gearbox.
@@Project40Carssame gearbox like the punto gt until the alfa 156 twin-spark, pretty easy to find if you look around
Just replace the bushes I will link below a how too.
I have a 2001 HGT and the shift while long feels tight and precise.
Youre going to need to replace your linkages and bushes.
Yup looks that way, just need to find the parts.
Would it work on a Punto mk1?
I’m not sure if 4-tech offer one for the mk1 Punto.
