I did not have a traditional wedding. I walked to this song to my forever mate. whom I now have been married to for 39 yrs and Nothing Else Matters!!!!
They actually received a lot of flack for this song from fans stating it wasn’t metal enough. They used an orchestra and people didn’t like it. I love it.
Yeah for me it was the other way around. I was a Metallica fan, but after their first S&M album I moved on to symphonic metal. Metallica made me realise that metal just needs an orchestra. 🙂

S&M is an INCREDIBLE album and Metallica are such amazing musicians that crossing genres is just part of the game for them. Can't believe how much flak they got for this unbelievably amazing song - with and without the orchestra!

I always thought this was about Cliff, especially with James' reluctance to release it.
@@SoulReaver904 the core was James and his girlfriend at the time, but as it is with many of the Metallica songs, it is very applicable to many situations and has multiple meanings... For some of the band this could have been an ode to Cliff too.
The song is about his girlfriend at the time and how much he missed her when he was on tour. Also Elton John has said several times that it’s the most beautiful song ever written. You can actually listen to Elton John zoom call James on the Howard Stern Show to tell him what he thinks about the song. James gets very emotional about what Elton says.

Even back in the day alot of rap/hip-hop/etc. heads were into Metallica too. I think it was the lyrics that caught their attention and ardor.
I think reacting without the homework is so much more authentic. Also, it allows you to interpret it the way you see it without other influences. Great job BP.

The beauty of this song is it can be about so many things. A relationship with a loved one, a relationship with a higher power, the band's relationship and trust in each other, or to the fans of Metallica that have followed and supported them for years. When this is done live, and you are part of that crowd singing... it is transcendental. It feels like you are part of a family. The band refers to their fans as the "Metallica Family," I have followed them since their beginning and now have 3 generations (me, my sons, and grandkids) going to Met concerts. It's an amazing thing!

Even their song .aater Of Puppets, which is definitely about drugs and how they take over your life and control you, is open for each person to feel which vice or aspect of life it is about for them.

James Hetfield cant help but shed a couple of tears hearing one of the most respected musicians in the world talk about a personal love song written by him, an introverted orphan who reached world fame while battling alcoholism .. Imagine the cocktail of emotions he must have had writing this ..

Hetfield wrote the song initially about missing his girlfriend while they were on the road but was meant to be interpreted however you’d like. I hardly listen to the song as a fan but when I do hear it I really appreciate its beauty and Hetfields writing. His solo is iconic.

The Black Album ( named “Metallica”) released in 1991 catapulted these guys from being the world’s greatest band in rock / metal to the greatest band on the planet in all music….they had a three year long World Tour with this album….some old heads turned away from them ( claiming they sold out) but millions and millions new fans surrendered to them sending Metalica into eternal stardom

Really appreciate you going in blind. I worked with a contemporary artist who held the view that people who didn't understand art, shouldn't bother going to art galleries. He wanted everyone to be fully aware of the context, the meaning the artist had intended when creating a piece. It hurt my soul to hear him say that - art of any kind, be it visual or sound is for everyone and can have a profound affect on us. I worked in a museum where an Ikebana floral arrangement moved a middle-aged man to tears. I ended up hugging him as he explained it had suddenly reminded him of a recently deceased friend. So I don't believe limit should be put on interpretations and gut emotional responses to created works. As for this song, I always took the lyrics as being about his solidarity with his band members, being open and vulnerable when singing and through the lyrics he writes, that nothing matters more to him than creating authentic art - that's my interpretation anyhoo. Like you - I enjoy going digging into meanings and intentions later. 🥰 A stunning track, so glad you listened.

The whole Black album is fire, but my favorite Metallica albums are the S&M albums!! They're backed by The San Francisco Symphony, and it's a whole different experience!! No leaf clover, and Hero of the day are 2 of my favorite songs off of those albums! Definitely worth a peep! And James is 💯 a poet!!

This song is off the Black Album( album 5) James wrote this song about a girlfriend but didn’t want to release it.( so you’re on point). Later Lars ( the drummer) insisted on recording it and it became Metallica’s anthem. It resonated their journey and became a tribute to each other. By this time they were on their 3rd bassist ( Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted). 2nd guitarist ( Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett). McGovney left, Mustaine was kicked out but Burton died in a tour bus wreck in Germany. Burton was a musical student but not at Juilliard. The rest were just teenage rockers. Burton’s influence is apparent in a lot of their music( especially their earlier albums).
Cliff Burton died in a car crash in Sweden.

Cliff and Lars flipped a coin or something like that for a certain bunk. Cliff won the bunk and the driver claimed he hit black ice but James ran up and down the road in his underwear and never saw any black ice.
I've heard this played at a wedding and a funeral, and it was completely appropriate in both settings. The best songs mean something different for each person listening without negating the composer's original intent, and this is one of the greatest. Huge respect to you for opening yourself to new musical experiences. Love the fact that you're prepared to make yourself a little vulnerable by doing them completely blind. Have you thought about exploring some classical pieces? I think it may deepen your appreciation for other musical genres and how musicians go about their craft. Just an idea ✌️

My little brothers introduced me to Metallica in the lates 80's early 90's. Still to this day I have Metallica Days. I listen to them all day long. I can identify with most of their music. They are Awesome in concert too! Some of my favorites is the song ONE, UNFORGIVEN 1&2, DON'T TREAD ON ME and FADE TO BLACK. I really wish you would check some of these out! BTW I like watching you discover different types of Music. It take you on a journey if you let it.

"You guys go wild and I don't know why" For me it's 3 core reasons among many ancillary ones.
The three cores for me:
1) You are an artist yourself so you have extra insight that some other people might not, and at heart and respect the art regardless of if it is your thing
2) I can tell from watching you that you actually try to see what the art is showing you, or making you feel, you don't just write it off at face value
3) It's always dope seeing someone from another fanbase tip their toes into something you love
As someone who has intensely loved so many different genres in my life, it's always amazing to vicariously watch someone's musically journey to a place you did in the past, a place and time you hold dear, and see it almost again for the first time, threw fresh eyes.
I'll never forget when I was in high school I was super into music, art, history, and nerd shit like World of Warcraft. I'll never forget the day that I was showing a friend the stuff I had earned in the game my "gear" that my character wore. That I worked hard for. I'm a nerdy white kid, and this other kid I knew who was all about that street life walked by doing his gangster walk. He's like a tough street kid that could scare a nerd. He walks by and sees what I'm showing my other nerdy friend. He says "Oh shit! Is that World of Warcraft?? You got fucking Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros?? (it's just a super rare and fancy weapon in the game) Wtf! That's crazy!!! Check out my Warrior he has Thunderfurry!" We instantly became friends after talking nerd shit for an entire hour. It blew my mind because we could not have been from two more different walks of life and in one instant, we both knew we were brothers. That's the type of feeling you get as a rap head when a metalhead comes around to the magic of rap, or visa versa. It's like how music is the universal language, you don't even have to understand the words for it to communicate with you. It's a magically thing if you are open and receptive to it.

So many folks have a preconceived idea of what rock is and consists of and venture away from it when they really should just have a listen to the lyrics, the music and the vibe of the band and make their decision on their own. A few months ago my girlfriend had just broken up with me but we still went and saw Metallica the day after as planned. I saw her texting another guy while sitting next to me. A few years before, I had just gotten in massive trouble with my parents days before a Metallica concert and almost wasn't allowed to go.
Some day I hope to see them and it be a positive experience.

One of their greatest songs and the video/song has a very deep meaning is "One". Synonymous with the movie Johnny Get Your Gun. These boys completely jam out in this song. I personally think its their best song!! Check it out. Awesome!!

I like the first 4 albums as much as the purists but I also understand musical evolution and how times and sounds change. Show me a single band who’ve sounded the same and never evolved over 30 years or so and I’ll show you a band who fell off the radar….

Im a little late to this party but here goes...
This was a song James wrote for his girl. He didn't want to "put it out there" so to speak. It's just one of those pieces of art that you want to keep just for yourself and your loved ones. But, he played it for Lars, and of course, Lars loved it and talked James into putting it out there. I'm glad he did.
As a guitarist and musician, It's a simple song in terms of technical abilities. But that's not the point. It's not about how fast, heavy, technically proficient, etc. It's how it touches your soul. How it makes you feel. Some of the greatest pieces of music are basic chord progressions. But again, that's not a diss or the damn point.
Definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever written IMO. I get flack for being a metalhead who absolutely adores this song. But people need to stop trying to change who they truly are just to fit in. F that nonsense!
Be yourself, love yourself, and don't give a rat's arse about what people think of you. If you and your tribe are not on the same vibe and you're not being your genuine self, perhaps it's time to let go.

When you go down the rabbit hole of people playing hard rock on older instruments like pianos and harps, most sound ok. But Metallica always sounds amazing.

James wrote this song because he missed his gf at the time. I was in my first interracial relationship when this song came out so this song became our song. The black album, the album this song was on, was the first album that I got into The Mighty Met! I have been a lifetime fan since then. 💜 Also the naked pic was his gf. 😁

James wrote the song and hadn't planned on recording it until Lars Ulrich heard it. It was a song he wrote for himself about missing home and his then girlfriend.
It is also one of few songs in which James is the lead guitarist and that Kirk Hammett doesn't perform on the song. In fact he didn't even learn how to play the song until they were on tour.
I also second watch the Howard Stern Show when Elton John calls in and you can see James getting very visibly choke up over the comments Elton gave.
Music means what it means for you. My son take this as a love song, i think of family and my other son sees all of his close friends
If you're on a "don't tread on me" trip, Metallica actually have a song called Don't Tread On Me that I think you'd like. It's from the same album as this one.
Better late than never brother! BTW, my FIRST concert, turning 16 a month later, saw Metallica. I had bought a special outfit for the occasion. Two YEARS after I saw the concert I wore the SAME outfit for my senior high pictures! I wanted that to be a memory FOREVER!

Everyone used to read the lyrics... that was my first listen to every album I bought in my youth. Get home from the record store, headphones in, listen, read along, look at the artwork. It was a whole tactile, sensual experience.

I first heard this at age of 14. Relationship song. That's what I thought. Mid 20s. God. Now. Government telling you how to live. I think they put this together to represent all those. I seen a video like 6yrs ago of James and Larus talking about why they left California and moved to Colorado. And it was politics.
