Fun fact: Still, to this day, as listed in The Guinness Book of World Records, Metallica is the only band to ever play on all 7 continents. And they did it within a one year period. The choppers were not to keep people in line. They were moving air down into the crowd because they were so tightly grouped together.
There were reportedly 1.6 million people there and it is the 5th largest concert crowd ever recorded. The concert was to celebrate the fall of the Soviet Union and AC/DC, Pantera, The Black Crowes, and Motley Crue also performed, but Metallica stole the show.

This song, when James originally wrote it, was about losing a child to SIDS, but it eventually evolved into just trying to protect your child from the inevitable evils of the world, some of which are closer than you think. Another fun fact, the child’s voice you hear in the bridge is James’ sons voice!
I lost a child to SIDS 15 years ago, and this song, among a few others, really spoke to me during that time. They still do. Godspeed by Dixie Chicks also was one that could make me cry, but also brought me peace.. dozens of them really, but that one captured my Mom grief. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Ever.
You are right about the song was going to be about but James was unmarried with 0 children when this album came out . Caster Hetfield was born in the early 2000's .
'blurpledragon2779' is correct. At the time "Enter Sandman" was recorded in June of 1991, James Hetfield was unmarried with no children. So, that was the voice of somebody else's son. James' only son Castor Virgil wasn't born until May of 2000.😊

This concert was guarded by 11 thousand people: police, riot police, internal troops, rifle divisions of the Soviet Army. When the first bottles fell on their heads and two soldiers were taken away by an ambulance, angry law enforcement officers began to rush at anyone they did not like, beating people with their hands, feet and clubs. The space in front of the stage literally turned into a bloody battle that did not stop from the very beginning of the concert until midnight. According to the ambulance station, 56 people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, of which 16 were military personnel.Oleg PSHENICHNY Photo by L. LAZAREV "Horizon №12'1991
A USSR flag is the probably the last flag you'd see at this show. This was the first major concert in Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union, so also a sort of celebration of the opening up of Russia to the western world. Kids in the USSR had been getting their hands on bootleg tapes and merch from Metallica (and other western bands) and this was the first time that those bands were finally able to come over and play live there. That's the entire reason the crowd is so big.
@@ray.shoesmith You're right about it being a couple months before the official dissolution of the USSR. I was thinking the wall coming down. No clue what the rest of your post was about. The concert had nothing to do with anyone staying power, especially not Yeltsin seeing as how he was the first leader of Russia after the dissolution and was in power until 1999.

The opening tune is Ecstacy of Gold by Ennio Morricone. It can be heard in the 1966 movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly starring Clint Eastwood. James Hetfield uses the tune to warm his vocals up before going on stage. All Metallica's concerts start with it.

Dude I'm 60 years old and still jam on this. I was raised on music. My mom work for J&K records in the 70s and my ole man was an old country music guy. But metal is my go to when I need to get shit done.
You can’t be 40 years old and not have heard this song in passing at some point. It’s literally played at some point in at most sporting events. Humanity is basically one step away from issuing this album (the self-titled “Black Album”) to newborns at birth with their social security cards.
They say it was 1.6 million but that isn't an official number, they say there was likely 3-400 thousand more given all the security, police and military not to mention those who couldn't even see the stage lol. Metallica owns all of their music and records on their own label, Blackened Records.
I love this song. It has such an ominous sound, as does much of metal music, but also like much of metal music, the foundation is positive. The “Sandman” is made to sound horrifying, but he’s only mentioned once and the start and then given a head nod at the end. Why? It’s not really about the Sandman, but what he exemplifies- the embodiment of things that terrify children. A child’s nightmares often spawn from something in reality. To the point that both of you guys are making, what is the Sandman bringing to the children of Russia, Ukraine, Israel, the Gaza Strip, or Palestine? For me, metal has always found a way to shed light on the horrors of society, systematic oppression by governments, or the manipulation of governments by special interest groups and the wealthy. Metal allows me to flip a big 🖕🏼 to all of these things while jamming out. It’s brilliantly cathartic. Much love guys, enjoyed as always
I have seen a interview with James Hetfield about this concert, remember none of them had any idea how many would be coming. They were later told that any rock music was hard to get before the iron curtain was ended. The intro is from the movie the good, the bad and the ugly and is titled Ecstasy of Gold. They have done a concert with San Francisco symphony orchestra, their music gets another deep with the orchestra. David Garrett is a violinist that plays both classical music and dose covers of movie, pop and rock music. Some songs are The 5th, Thunderstruck, Walk This Way, He’s a Pirate, Kashmir, Peer Gynt, Childs anthem.
On the Howard Stern Show they said it's about crib death. "sleep with one eye open, gripping your pillow tight, exit light, enter night. take my hand, off to never never land"
Great reaction. Please check out their song Creeping Death thar did at this same concert. And hear the ppl chant with them. The song is Great. It's basically took out of the Book of Exdous. Please.
Don't expect USSR flags. With the fall of the USSR and the Berlin Wall coming down not long before this, Russia finally opened up to the West, tourism and Western entertainers went over. The Russian people finally got events like this and so huge numbers attended
The music for the song was written by Metallica guitar player Kirk Hammett, along with Hetfield and Ulrich. The subject matter for the tune was composed by Hetfield, who sings with a rugged growl about a child trying to fall asleep and the nightmares that ensue.
This was the Entrance Theme music for The Sandman in ECW, and this gets played at every home game of Virginia Tech College Football Team as the players run onto the field before the start of the game
That background music at the beginning was from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, a great old spaghetti western with Clint Eastwood (the Good), Lee Van Cleef (the Bad), and Eli Wallach (the Ugly). One of the best movies Clint ever did.
I looked it up, this was a free concert at Tushino airfield in Moscow for 1.6 million people. The concert was the first in the Monsters of Rock series and took place in September 1991, a month after the August Putsch failed.
The song you are asking about is "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" the theme song of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti Western of the same name. Song is also used in the Modelo beer commercials. Check out the Danish National Symphony Orchestra doing it. It's beyond amazing and sounds just like the movie score
As a big NY Yankees fan, I remember when Mariano Rivera, the relief pitcher/closer would enter the game they would blast this song over the PA. Gave you goose bumps and then he would put the opposing batter to sleep.
Now you need to see The Warning cover this both when they were young (9, 12, & 14), which launched their career, then the reimagining of the song live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX in 2022
Hi guys, I come from Chile Southamerica. I am 52 years old and the first time that I herard Metallica's song, I was 14 years old..It is a pleasure to see you..
FRom Bing AI: This is a song called “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. It’s about a little boy who is scared to go to sleep and has nightmares. The song talks about how the boy’s father tries to comfort him and keep him safe from bad dreams. The lyrics also mention the Sandman, who is a mythical character that helps people fall asleep. The song has a lot of loud music and sounds, but it’s just pretend and nothing to be afraid of. It’s just like when you play pretend with your friends and make loud noises.
You boys made me check the lyrics on a song I have listened and heard for 30 years. Metallica lyrics are often pretty simple but deep. From this one, for some reason, I got the first impression of a father putting a child in bed and they both know there is a bad world out there slowly creeping in to the childs life and mind as childhood fades away. Sandman is an unstoppable entity that will introduce this real world to the child.
If I remember right, Black Pegasus you mentioned being a military brat living in Germany. So was I, and in the same era (I'm 41). We were in Giessen when the Berlin Wall fell (to be followed shortly by the USSR) and I remember the floods of refuges coming west and setting up in huge encampments. They had almost nothing, but one of the things they were most excited for was western media, especially music. The musicians in this show understood that need for change and a new view, and responded with music. It's a joy to see you experience the same joy as them, even coming from such a different perspective.
When the curtain fell we flew relief supplies food, blankets, etc.. It was the coolest thing. One of the soldiers (Russian) we were trying to show him a Playboy and he was scared to look at it. It was amazing to watch them go from an utter nightmare to this..
The reference to the military helicopter fly over the crowds, as well as security they sent them over the crowd to cause a draft over the crowd to cool them down a bit, 1.6 mil people causes a lot of heat.
the intro is Ennio Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold, from The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. It has been Metallica's live set intro song forever. From this concert a MUST watch songs are: Metallica: Harverster of Sorrow Metallica: Creeping Death Pantera: Domination (THAT drop)
The intro song is the intro to any metallica show it's the ecstacy of gold by ennio morricone and is also used in the western movie the good the bad and the ugly

Dude I'm 60 years old and still jam on this. I was raised on music. My mom work for J&K records in the 70s and my ole man was an old country music guy. But metal is my go to when I need to get shit done.
I would HATE if I were right in the middle and needed to use the restroom…..
Please do One!!! It's got movie clips from Johnny's Got His Gun... Absolute story telling at its finest!!!
You can’t be 40 years old and not have heard this song in passing at some point. It’s literally played at some point in at most sporting events. Humanity is basically one step away from issuing this album (the self-titled “Black Album”) to newborns at birth with their social security cards.
My all time favorite metallica song!
They say it was 1.6 million but that isn't an official number, they say there was likely 3-400 thousand more given all the security, police and military not to mention those who couldn't even see the stage lol. Metallica owns all of their music and records on their own label, Blackened Records.
The best bit was when you were trying to put this into historical context..."...when did Rocky IV come out?" Awesome. Love it.
Please.
Intro song is by Ennio Morricone. I forget the name of it but it's from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
You have officially made my morning routing now black!
Coffee, a joint and binge all the new vids that you guys post!
The Ecstacy of Gold from the movie, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly ..at the beginning!!
It's not just a jack commercial
This must´ve beein their CRAZIEST concert ever, and their most DANGEROUS concert ever!!! AMAZING!!! 🤟
Don't expect USSR flags. With the fall of the USSR and the Berlin Wall coming down not long before this, Russia finally opened up to the West, tourism and Western entertainers went over. The Russian people finally got events like this and so huge numbers attended
Wow seeing this 30 years later is just.....i dont have words ❤
You've got to watch Pantera doing Domination from the same show, the energy is off the scale
You absolutely have to do One, the official video. Nice reaction to this one!
The music for the song was written by Metallica guitar player Kirk Hammett, along with Hetfield and Ulrich. The subject matter for the tune was composed by Hetfield, who sings with a rugged growl about a child trying to fall asleep and the nightmares that ensue.
i started with metallica and guns n roses when i was 15😊
later fell in love with rammstein..
but metallica will always be a childhood sweetheart😂😂❤
This was the Entrance Theme music for The Sandman in ECW, and this gets played at every home game of Virginia Tech College Football Team as the players run onto the field before the start of the game
This song is one of the biggest gateways into metal.
VA Tech Intro is insane. Thought I’ve lived Metallica since the 80’s with Damage inc. Yes after the calm of the Berlin Wall in 1089 when I graduated.
This video gets me hyped evertime!
I said on the du hast video to check this out I’m so glad you’re checking this crowd out
The song you are asking about is "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" the theme song of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti Western of the same name. Song is also used in the Modelo beer commercials. Check out the Danish National Symphony Orchestra doing it. It's beyond amazing and sounds just like the movie score
It was a wild peaceful time 1991. 2024, we've set ourselves (as a country) back soooooo far.
As a big NY Yankees fan, I remember when Mariano Rivera, the relief pitcher/closer would enter the game they would blast this song over the PA. Gave you goose bumps and then he would put the opposing batter to sleep.
Now you need to see The Warning cover this both when they were young (9, 12, & 14), which launched their career, then the reimagining of the song live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX in 2022
All these people brought a cd bro, with the money eyes wide open, brilliant.
And TheOnlyBand which played on 5 Continents!
Hi guys, I come from Chile Southamerica. I am 52 years old and the first time that I herard Metallica's song, I was 14 years old..It is a pleasure to see you..
Correction: I heard .
Thanks , for your honest opinion. Im just a regular guy , who wants to live in freedom and peace with enjoyable , lovely and great music.
The "song" at the beginning is "The Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone, from the Spaghetti Western "The good, the bad & the ugly".
Yes, please do One!
Metallica is well worth your time to look into further! Great band! Love them!
Some songs are just not meant to be paused/interrupted..this is one of those songs. One of the best songs ever made.
Might have been noted earlier but you nailed Freddy Krueger, this was in one of Nightmare Elmstreet movies.
This was the Moscow peace festival. I remember watching it live on pay per view
Awesome reaction guys, love the metal deviations, I would love to see more Iron Maiden reactions, please....
Yes!!! More Metallica!! One (official video)!
One is amazing you've got to watch
If you decide to do One then it must be the music video version, lends so much to the story of the song.
Hy... I love your channel.. Respect from Hungary
The video clip for one is for sure a reccommendation!
When the curtain fell we flew relief supplies food, blankets, etc.. It was the coolest thing. One of the soldiers (Russian) we were trying to show him a Playboy and he was scared to look at it. It was amazing to watch them go from an utter nightmare to this..
You could do those picture frames with sweet Atmospheric Lighting to display your Art in the best light
From this concert a MUST watch songs are:
Metallica: Harverster of Sorrow
Metallica: Creeping Death
Pantera: Domination (THAT drop)
Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band. Another classic of all time. (Born to be wild)
The intro song is the intro to any metallica show it's the ecstacy of gold by ennio morricone and is also used in the western movie the good the bad and the ugly
MTV had "Headbangers Ball" and they would play it.. yes your nightmare can creep up on you.. it's about your fears and facing them
these guys are REAL ROCK STARS!!!!!!!
This live is amazing gets me so hyped.
They still sound awesome.
Salute to the Tech N9ne reference lol love it
Plus this video is iconic for real.
Definitely check out more shows from this concert if you can
