No one knows what causes pulmonary fibrosis?

  • In this episode I discuss known causes for pulmonary fibrosis (lung scarring). Not all cases of pulmonary fibrosis are "idiopathic" (= of an unknown cause). In many situations, there is another condition, an event in the patient's history or an environmental exposure which has lead to the lung scarring.
*I also forgot to mention in the video that certain medications or previous radiation therapy can also sometimes be responsible for pulmonary fibrosis.

Love your videos. You make it so easy to understand. I'm glad you mentioned that various medications can contribute to PF, which is believed what has caused mine. Thank you.

Do you recommend treatment for asymptomatic patients diagnosed with minimal fibrosis on the right upper lobe on cxr? No history of known pulmonary infection and no smoking history. What can you comment on people who are exposed to computers for like 16 hours a day for several years? Also do you think Covid vaccine can be attributed to developing fibrosis?

I think my scarring came from mold in my basement. 15 years there. My ct scan said upper prodominate lung fibrosis and possible hypersensitive pneumonitis. Now that I moved to another house my oxygen levels are much better and I'm on an antibiotic medication ( Ofev) been stable for over 3 years. Can the scarring stop once you leave a harmful atmosphere???

Very interesting talk there is so much we don't know.. my original diagnosis was idiopathic.. then familial when it showed up in a sibling..this led to a genetic test that turned up negative. A recent pulmonary function showed .7 liter lung increase and that is not supposed to happen..

i agree, sometimes we see improvements that we cannot explain very well. This is encouraging though!

Just had another function test with a different specialist.. there was abnormal results in some areas.. given my age (70) and my physical condition, I believe it is not severe enough to affect me so far.. I do have some coughing.. I lift weights intensely and some cardio,my issues dont seem to affect my v02 to any large degree at this point I don't have any studies to confirm this but I suspect my intense workouts have immensely slowed down and improved my condition..
