How to monitor Pulmonary Fibrosis over time?

  • What to expect as follow-up for cases of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary fibrosis? How will your doctor check whether the lung scarring is getting worse? What are the tests they may request? What questions will they ask? How often will you need to be seen? Do all cases of pulmonary fibrosis require long-term follow-up consultations?
These are some of the questions that I answer in this video.
I also explain why certain tests are done and when (lung function - spirometry and gas transfer, chest CT scans, blood tests, heart scans - echocardiogram, ECG and ECG monitoring etc.).
I also mention why you may be asked about your oxygen levels and whether you are doing any exercises for your lungs (i.e. formal pulmonary rehabilitation programs).

Can you make a video (or have you already) on the topic of getting diagnosed incidentally with pulmonary fibrosis when they were looking for something else? And what it means if you have a diagnosis of IPF but no symptoms yet?

My mother and two sisters all three died from familiar idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at ages 63, 68 snd 72. My younger brother had a double lung transplant 6 years ago. I am the only child who did not inherit the gene. I am now 75 years old.
It is a shame that the horrendous disease is not considered important to treat aggressively in your country. Does your country have government funded health care?
It is ab unbelievably horrible disease from which to suffer and die.

Thank you information. However, can we know the other types of lung fibrosis besides the severe idiopathic one ?
Can asthma lead to fibrosis in the lungs?.

You should refer to a dermatologist for this condition.

My mom dignosed IPF last year and dr said she is responding very well fibrosis not progressing much she can run walk and eat very normally and i just want to say there is no need to worry more just do timely meditation ,medical advice, medical consultation, daily excercise plan ,daily suitable good fat diet and at last it not be cured but you definately slow down the progression and it has examples which lived beyond 5 years 10 years so no need to worry you can give person life more and more by taking care of above mentioned things

People who are diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis here in the States all require oxygen beginning at an advanced stage in their disease. Eventually, they need oxygen for 24 hours a day.
