A hose end sprayer is a great tool to use when it comes to making a broadcast application of a herbicide or insecticide over a large area. But it can be confusing figuring out the right product-to-water ratio to use in the reservoir, and how much water you’re actually using.
There are many hose end sprayers on the market, but as a cheaper alternative, we’re using the 20 gallon fixed rate hose end sprayer. This sprayer is great for homeowners because of its ease-of-use, simple ON/OFF control valve, and an adjustable deflector to suit different applications. This hose end sprayer is composed of several parts: the nozzle, the deflector, and the reservoir. The nozzle features a straw and control valve.
Before setting up your hose end sprayer, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, especially when handling chemicals. And remember to keep all people and pets off your treated areas until dry.
First, remove the sprayer’s reservoir from the nozzle. Make sure the sprayer’s control valve is held in the OFF position. Make sure your water is off and attach the sprayer to the hose. Set the hose aside.
Check your product’s label, and add the proper amount of product for your desired treatment. Then add the proper amount of water to be sprayed into the reservoir. Make sure your water and the nozzle’s control valve are still turned off, and attach the reservoir to the nozzle. Once you confirm a tight connection, you can turn on the water.
Turn the control valve to the ON position to start spraying. Keep an eye on the level of product and water in the reservoir. You may have to adjust your walk speed or rate of application to ensure your treatment area receives an equally dispersed amount of product.
If you’ve left the deflector on, water will fan downward, perfect for a broadcast treatment. To apply product to the undersides of trees or bushes, you can turn the deflector upside down to fan the water upward. To reach further spots, remove the deflector entirely to produce a steady jet of water. Always switch the control valve OFF before adjusting the deflector.

Thank you for explaining this in a rational easy to follow fashion. So many videos assume that you already know the details of how the sprayer works. I sincerely appreciate you posting this for the greater community.

You did an excellent job with your explanation. Hose on sprayers give most homeowners fits and a lot of under/over application occurs as I seen in my career as a county agent.

Thank you so much for a very informative tutorial. There are many channels with DIY fertilizers for lawns. However the part about using the sprayer and mixture is glossed over if not skipped entirely. Even watching your video with you explained very explicitly, I had questions and I still had some confusion. Fortunately the products that I'm using are not herbicides but organic fertilizers and I don't think they can do any harm if too much is used.🤞🏻

Here goes my question...I m going to be using a hose end sprayer and I’m thinking about the solution of bifen XTS. I’m going to diluting it at .6 oz per 1000 sqft. My question has to do with dilutions for insecticide vs pesticide. If the water sprays out at 2 gallons per minute that would mean that I would need to cover 1000 sqft in 30 seconds to maintain the .6/gallon dilution...following me so far? I guess what I’m really asking is if I’m covering a 1000 sqft patch with 1 gallon of bifen xts diluted at .6 is it the same as covering that same 1000 sqft patch with 2 gallons at .3% dilution. The reason I ask is that covering 1000 sqft in 30 seconds seems pretty tricky and even if I were able to double that to 1000 sqft in a minute that would be more realistic for me. The reason I’m asking this is that It seems that with fertilizer you can use as much water as needed to cover the patch with the appropriate solution but it seems with bifen or other insecticides that more water does take away from the strength. Example: for covering 1000 sqft with fertilizer it doesn’t matter if you use 1 gallon or 5 gallons of water as long as the dilution is right and you use the entire amount evenly on the 1000 sqft patch of grass. BUT..with insecticide if I use a desired dilution of say (5 tablespoons per gallon) to cover 1000 sqft it seems that I would not be able to apply the same ratio by instead using 1 tablespoon per gallon and use a total of 5 gallons to cover the 1000 sqft. I guess I’m just worried about too much water having an effect of the effectiveness of the bifen. Thanks so much 2:20

What insecticide product would be good to use with a hose end sprayer like this for basic maintenance? I like the Tempo SC and the Suspend Polyzone for around the house but I would think it would cost a fortune to use product like that on an entire lawn?

I am so mathematically challenged. I bought one of these a couple of years ago and it is brand new😔.
I'm trying to kill the wild grasses in my very small yard I plan on using salt, as I have toddlers that make such lovely mud pies, that they must think each new pie looks so much better than the last it must be delicious 🤔😀😜 so chemicals are out 😱.
I'll have to watch this many times too get the math if it is even possible. Ratio I think is 1 cup of salt to 2 cups of water. It would be nice if I could use my sprayer instead of my watering can. But 4th of July is getting here faster than I am. New neighbors weed eated their weed seeds into my yard, like 2 gallons 2x's so far, before spring, this year . Woaas me😞
