  • In this video I chat about mark making that I enjoy in my art, and also give some inspirational ideas on how to incorporate your own marking. I paint primarily with watercolour and acrylic paints, and show some supplies I like to use for marking overtop dried backgrounds, and swatches. I use many different mixed media supplies, such as permanent pens, pencils, acrylic paint pens, wax crayons and water-soluble pencil crayons.
    Mention:
    140 lb watercolour/ mixed media paper (Canson XL or Artist Loft are good brands)
    Faber Castell gelatos and watersoluble pencil crayons. (Supracolour soft II is the pencil I tend to use)
    Uniball Signo Japanese bronze fine pen
    Posca water-based acrylic paint pens (white fine tip and black medium tip)
    Studio gel black permanent pen (Dollarama)
    Gelly roll pens (I used neon)
    Neo colour Caran d'ache wax crayons
    Stabilo woody watersoluble crayons
    Strathmore sketch book for ideas with pen or pencil
    Ruled index card book
    Jane Davenport mixed media papers
    Rae Missigman "Paint Play Explore" book
    Beam paints also sells mini watercolour books by "Stonehenge" , cold pressed and hot pressed.

    Last September I made and bound a book that I have dedicated to mark making. I used good quality paper, hand stitched the binding, and made some boxes on some of the pages. Since then I have been filling pages with marks, symbols, visual textures, and small graphic sketches. What a personal resource it has become. Any time I see something that sparks my interest, I create a visual reminder of that element. I loved seeing how you are compiling yours. Thank you for the gift of your time and inspiration.

      Your handmade book of ideas and inspiration sounds wonderful. My challenge is sticking with just one or two, as I'm all over the map right now! You're inspiring me with your comment!

    I love all the white space between the colors, something I want to focus on. I’m stuck home recovering from a quadruple broke leg and I can’t tell you how much your videos are helping through such a difficult time! You are so generous with your all that you share. I’ve been working on cards for the past week. You have somehow instilled in me for the first time in my long art journey to just paint for myself and for healing which I’m finding liberating. I just want to say thank you!

    I want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. I try to paint along with you, doing my own thing while inspired by your mark making, your color instinct, and your easy banter as you're working along. I feel like I'm sitting in your kitchen or in your art room with you and it's just such an easy, comfortable, creative session. It's especially nice for me because when I was in Calgary over Christmas to visit my daughters I managed to break my arm... My dominant arm ... And it's an uphill struggle to work with my arm and regain my fine motor control. Working along with your abstract, art poetry style helps me let go of my internal criticism that my hand and arm are still behaving in unpredictable ways. I am so happy I discovered your channel.
    I'm in Yellowknife, by the way

    Besides your absolutely beautiful artwork, one thing I truly love about your videos and work is your authenticity. It's truly reflected in your art and in your videos. I personally love that you "get off track"...because that's how so many of our brains work and id much rather have that than a "perfect video" or piece of art. It's a really calming and inspiring experience watching your videos and your process. Thank you for sharing!! I'm so inspired by you! ❤

    Thank you for this inspiring video. I’m still finding my mark making inspirations. I’m very much a spiral and circle person. I love watching your videos and hearing you talk about your watercolour journey. I love your little Stonehenge pads. I’ve searched endlessly for them and I can’t find them in Australia. I can only get the larger ones on Amazon Australia. Looking forward to your next video 🫶

    • @allisondawrant
      @allisondawrant  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are so welcome! This is the first time I've purchased/used Stonehenge watercolour paper. Out of the 2, I liked the cold pressed 140lb pad... I suppose you could cut your own but I know how tedious that can be... I may try to "tear" a large sheet with my sharp metal ruler, as I want to achieve that slightly irregular cotton edge with the sheets... Thanks for watching from Australia!

      @carrma57 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@allisondawrant I bought an A4 size Stonehenge pad of black watercolour paper. I wanted black for my beautiful Kuretake pearl and starry sets. More fire card and bookmark making. The colours stand out on the black paper. I was lucky enough to purchase a heavy duty paper cutter on sale. What a game changer, it cuts up to 30 sheets at a time. So I may just use that to make little papers. I have a die that cuts jagged rough edges, but not used it yet. Have a lovely weekend 🫶

    I am glad that it has started to warm up in Calgary. Here too in Oakbank, Mb. I wanted to let you know that I ordered a few of the Beam paints - and I absolutely adore them. They are so wonderful to work with. I will definitely be buying more colours as the $ allow...LOL I wanted to ask if there were any Courses on Skillshare that you would recommend for people who are trying to find their own style or just for additional inspiration. I am a retired 64 yr old widow and I do paint everyday - but I still haven't been able to figure out my style - and I have been painting since 1995 when I found Folk Art painting. Always love your videos. I have actually hauled out some of my "stash" inks and acrylics and have started "playing. It is quite fun exploration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and inspiration.

    • @allisondawrant
      @allisondawrant  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question about skillshare classes- I will keep you in mind if I stumble on any of this topic/finding your artist style. It really comes down to showing up everyday for yourself and letting yourself make the art that makes you happy... no rules,... just the doing will get you there, and play and exploration ! that's great you started with Folk Art Painting... I will possibly do a video on how we can hone in on our own style...

    Hi Allison. I may have missed it in the video, but where do you get these watercolor paper cards? Or, do you cut them yourself? Also at 32:59 with the Find Rainbows card, I would love to see you create one like that card in a video. Also, I have had no luck with WHITE gel pens :-( I cannot find any that will mark well and I have tried many different brands. Again, I would love to see you make the Find Rainbows card or something similar because it helps to see your mark-making and that card stuck out to me.
