Art journaling and marking making play.

- In this video , I show you how I have made an accordion style art journal out of repurposed paintings, art pages, and papers that were painted over with acrylic paints in more solid colours. I show you the bright acrylic backgrounds and how they inform my art journal and mark making play. This is such a fun and relaxing way to create art.
I show you how I choose specific colours and marks that I enjoy overtop an already dried acrylic background on each page.
In an earlier video, I show I paint over unfinished works on paper, and this is one way to use them in a new way.
I use a variety of materials but mostly the following:
98lb and 140 lb watercolour paper cut in strips.
scissors
UHU stick Magic blue
Stabilo Woody watersoluble crayons
Koi coloring brush pens
Posca paint pens, bronze medium tip, white fine tip, light grey fine tip, pink rose in medium tip.
Uniball Signo gold fine pen
Staedtler Lumocolour permanent black pen in angle tip
Supracolour II Soft pencil crayons by Caran D'ache
Derwent Inktense pencil in orange and poppy red.

Yes, "Maudie" the movie was beautifully done and it was incredible how Maud Lewis pushed through her challenges and painted such colourful joyful folk art. Oh I wanted to ask you a question: would you have purchased the neocolor 1’s if you only had the 2’s? Can you use the 2’s in the way you use the 2’s? Just not put liquid on top?
I love both the neocolour 1s and 2s. Depends what effect I’m going for- but the 1s are wax and not activated with water… so they are great to use over acrylic paint and I can seal them and varnish without the smudging… so- I do use and love both!

I have just a little bit of extra $ at the moment for new supplies and I have to neocolor 2’s already and LOVE them, so I did just pull the trigger and went for it. I’m so excited. the Stabilo woody pencils - if you don't activate them with water, will they smudge when the papers are folded up? Or do you have to use a fixative?
Great question. Yes they can be prone to smudging, and I love using "Spectrafix" as it is a non-toxic casein based fixative. When I use them like this in my art journal/or just for play, I don't worry about the smudging... Another option is to put wax or parchment paper in between the pages as a temporary measure until you get the chance to "fix" them. I also recommend doing 3 layers of Spectrafix and allow for drying time in between coats. It can leave a shimmery "spray" or "droplets" but I don't mind that depending on what I'm fixing!
What kind of paint are you mark making over?
Oh, and I don't find they smudge too much at all! They are more like a wax watersoluble crayon, not like a chalky pastel.... hope that helps!
