It's just the name Merritt went under to do his weirder, gloomier stuff pretty much solo. Not long after this, he made the slightly expanded L.P. The New Despair, and in 2005 he did The Tragic Treasury with Daniel 'Lemony Snicket' Handler, which is magnificent, it's better than most of the Magnetic Fields albums. Then The Archies complained about the name of the 'band' and Merritt apparently can't use it anymore.
