I had an L 3-4 spinal fusion in 2007 at the age of 33 because of working in the nursing field and the pain from that was out of this world. I can't imagine what you went through at the age of 7?! My hats off to you Shane. I was already told by my surgeon that I need a second spinal surgery with a 10-14 inch incision. I'm not ready!!😭 Thank God for medical marijuana!

I'd have to say, the tucked in does look cuter and Shane is quite the handsome guy either way, but I like the glasses. ☺️ I'd also just like to say how much I love you two and your channel! I'm new, so I'm still doing some catching up, but I can't wait to see what wonderful things life brings you. ❤️ I was born with a birth defect called Spina Bifida and seeing someone do something so powerful with their situation and to really use it to make the world a better place brings tears to my eyes. More of the world needs to act like the two of you. ❤️ Thank you.

I love your support for each other, and the commitment you both demonstrate each day. I think it’s something more couples could learn from. Shane has a fantastic sense of humor, an indomitable spirit, and a joy for life.Hannah - your personality can light up any room. Anyone who can’t see the love and special bond between these two needs to clean their lenses, and perhaps even take a deeper look into their own life. You both inspire me and I thank-you for giving us the privilege of spending time with you.

I had T2 to L4 spinal fusion when I was 44 due to progressive scoliosis. 7 years later the discs below the fusion ruptured and were pressing on my bladder nerves so I had the lower half of my fusion removed, then they turned me over and replaced the 2 discs with plastic ones through my lower abdomen, then turned me back over like a rotisserie chicken and the lower fusion was reinstalled. Hydrotherapy has been the best activity for healing. I still find walking uncomfortable and I use a walking stick sometimes. Thanks for sharing your fusion story and for vlogging your lives. Shane you’re hilarious (and you look like a famous Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 comedian called Rob Brydon). And Hannah you’re a living legend 😇

There's a new documentary series from Ken Burns on PBS called "The Gene," and in the new part which os airing right now they showed a family who had lost one of their children to SMA. They later had another child, and had him tested at birth, and while he did test positive, he's been given one of the new drugs and is otherwise a completely healthy three year-old kid. They showed video of his first steps... They showed video of him jumping around on a trampoline! Other than needing a spinal injection every few months he has no sign of having a debilitating disease. I kept thinking of Shane, obviously, and I'm sure you guys have seen other kids who are practically cured of SMA, but as I was watching this healthy kid running around with no idea what a medical pioneer he is, I just couldn't get over how amazing it all was!

I can’t imagine a little boy having such a big surgery. My husband had spinal fusion surgery 5 years ago at the age of 53 and it lasted over 10. The recovery of that surgery was super painful and he was in the hospital for 12 days. Can’t imagine how it felt for a 7 year old who doesn’t fully understand what he just went through. He had it done in the hospital for special surgery in NYC. I remember being in the waiting room/hotel room and worrying about him. Can’t imagine the fright it must have been for you parents. But I do say that these things we need to go through makes a person stronger, and you are defiantly stronger and have a great outlook on life. It has made you to the great person you have become today.

In one of your videos, you said that you do this to "normalize" your relationship? I'd say mission accomplished! I love your videos. I love your sense of humor. I love you as a couple. And you are keeping me well entertained during this stay at home time. I live alone with my cat, so you provide me with some needed distraction. Your videos are a great mix of being informative about the life and needs of the disabled while providing a lot of fun entertainment. You really have helped me view those with disabilities in a more positive light and to have more confidence in befriending people of all kinds. My desire to do that is the reason I started watching SBSK which is where I found you. I pray that you are doing well during this shutdown and that Shane will be able to get his needed injection soon.

@@erssiemajor8010 I am not exactly completely alone. I am the resident advisor at a transitional home for women. I live in a cottage on our property. We have closed the office and the rest of the staff is working from home. I do have to get out and interact with our residents from time to time. When that happens I practice social distancing and wear a mask and gloves. No one has been in my home. It has been hard, and I can see it is beginning to take its toll on the staff and the residents. Thanks for asking. How about yourself? Are you and your family well?

Aww, poor little guy. I had the same surgery when I was 11 - I will never forget the pain when they transferred me from the gurney to the bed. Since then (1981), I’ve had four children with no pain relief. Childbirth has nothing on that pain. I passed out the first time I tried to stand. I recall begging for morphine shots...my thighs were covered in bruises. Now I have flat-back syndrome and have chronic pain. But my scoliosis was so severe I had no choice but to have the surgery.

When I was of the age of 7,8 and 9 I spent a lot of time in are Children's hospital in Cincinnati Ohio, I was going for treatments and test to try and found out why when everytime I would get sick, my spleen and liver would swell up and the spleen would pretty much shut down. years later, it turn out when I became sick again and the spleen this time completely shut down that Ohio State cancer center found I have a rare blood disorder on top of the cancer. thank you guys for sharing all your video's, you guys are so great together. hope you guys are safe and well and next year you are able to have your wedding if you dont go to the court house and get it done first.

I went for a consultation in London for a fusion when I was a teenager (I have Spina Bifida and kypho-scoliosis), but they couldn't do it because it would have meant me either standing or laying down for the duration of my life (I never expected to live into my 50s).
Sorry I'm late to the party, but I was in hospital for a week until yesterday.
    Hannah: "I'm not wearing pants!"
    Me: 😱
Remember, to British viewers, "pants" means "underpants".

I’m 58 and just went through a 12 hour scoliosis spinal fusion surgery mid November 2019. It’s no piece of cake surgery for sure. I’m still healing. In the first month or so, I didn’t want to get out of bed either. Was so painful sitting up.

I thought my first spinal fusion (I've had two and might be needing a third/second redo) lasting 9 hours was long. That's nothing compared to 13. I hardly remember anything from the first week post surgery due to painkillers so it was interesting to hear your memories.

Holy shit that is absolutely TERRIFYING! A few of my pediatric specialists here in California had briefly discussed this surgery with my Nana as a treatment option for my Spina Bifida/Scoliosis when I was around Shane’s age, however due to my case not being really urgent at all at the time they all decided that it would be in my best interest to wait due to a mixture of multiple risk factors (that were mentioned already in the video so I won’t repeat them), the fact that I had more time to grow, and also some other risk factors that probably weren’t likely for every case but were definitely a greater risk in mine so they had to be discussed in the conversation with my Nana as well. Now I ended up never having the surgery (as of right now at least, which is currently December 29th of 2020) due to other troubling health issues that popped up from aging with my medical conditions going under anesthesia became even riskier for me, so unless having a procedure or surgery that requires sedation or full blown general anesthesia is an emergency, or is more urgently necessary for whatever reason it’s simply to risky for me to have a procedure or surgery that’s really considered “elective” in my case, and since my spine is considered to be “as stable as can be” in my situation (as of right now at least) a surgery that’s this severe in such a detrimental location that also lasts for that many hours would simply be to risky for my lungs especially, but also for my general health so unless it’s absolutely needed either as an emergency, or for a really good reason both my many specialists, and Nana have decided to take it off the table for at least right now, and to reevaluate at a time where it either seems to be safer in my personal case, or where it seems to be much more emergent/necessary. However as I’m sure that pretty much everyone knows (especially Shane & Hannah) anything can happen at a moment’s notice including things that you would never expect (like this very serious emergency surgery with Shane for example) so I am very grateful that Shane & Hannah decided to make this video, and also for Shane being able show some vulnerability by sharing even the raw scary details of that time in his life while also recovering from a (I’m assuming, but please correct me if I’m wrong as I’m both a new viewer to this channel, and I also don’t have SMA so I don’t know the treatment options for that specific medical condition) minor procedure meant to either help his SMA symptoms, or keep his SMA stabilized. I’m thankful for all of this though because without having the opportunity to watch this video I would’ve known absolutely nothing about this surgery. The reasons why (I believe at least) that I didn’t know much about this surgery (I mean heck I didn’t even know the name of it until a description was given about it *in the video*, and I realized that Shane had the exact same surgery that was previously discussed for me to have!) prior to this video despite being consulted for it before are because A I was so young during the times that the surgery was actively discussed (although I was present for the conversations with my specialists, including when the risks were discussed) my memories from back then are a bit nonexistent (due to being so young during the majority of those times), B not seeing past trusting all of my doctors completely (as I had known them all my entire life) I didn’t truly understand the severity of the situation/risks though past the fear of pain, and the awful anesthesia gas that I knew would be included of course as I was a little kid at the time (please keep in mind that I was around the same age during these conversations as Shane was at the time of his surgery), and lastly C because I was so young (plus having very caring doctors) I think a lot of facts were sugarcoated which is something that I do understand why some facts would be sugarcoated to a young child, however I also realize that if I had not watched this video I probably would’ve never thought about this surgery again until I wasn’t very far away from getting it, and then I’d be even more scared than normal (under the circumstances) because I’d be rushing around Google most likely finding scary information (because well it’s a scary risky surgery in general, and let’s be honest here Dr. Google is always convinced that you’re gonna die within 5 minutes when it’s probably not true, so that’s really not the greatest combination here), and then I wouldn’t really have much time to let all the information truly soak in, or create a list of questions to ask the surgeon that’s gonna do the surgery, or in the worst case scenario (such as getting the surgery as an emergency) not even having time to ask the surgeon any questions about the surgery! Anyways though if you made it this far thank you so much for reading my very lengthy comment, and I’m very sorry for going on this massive tangent just to basically say ’Thank you so much to both Shane & Hannah for making/posting a video telling this (I’m sure) very sensitive story, I bet it was at least a tad bit hard (especially for Shane emotionally) to do, but nonetheless I really appreciate it as I can now be much more prepared much sooner if this surgery is ever brought upon the table for me again in the future! I hope everyone has an amazing day, and thank you so much again!!! - Arianna a new viewer! ❤️...’
P.S. I do realize that Shane’s case is very different from mine, and because of that it’s highly possible that our experiences with the same exact surgery could be completely different from one another, and it in no way means that either experience would be “inaccurate” or simply “made up” in any way shape or form, it just simply means that we are each completely individual human beings with completely different circumstances in both our medical cases, and lives in general. Furthermore I don’t mean to take any attention away from Shane’s story onto me, or to make what he went through about me in any way as I do know it is not about me literally at all! I just simply wanted to express gratitude towards both Shane & Hannah for sharing this particular story to the public, and to avoid any possible confusion as to why I felt the need to express this gratitude so strongly by sharing a bit of my story, but um that was my only intention behind making/posting this comment, not to try to attention seek or anything 🙂...
Oh also P.P.S. Just as a quick disclaimer in my comment it may appear to some that I may have implied that you should not completely trust your doctors, or even have caring doctors which is something that I both do not, and will not ever mean to imply! I fully believe that there should be a 2-way trusting relationships between both you, and your doctors because not only do doctors need to trust that their patients will follow their directions/advice in serious health situations, but patients also (sometimes more importantly) needs to be able to trust their doctors because if something serious happens to you medically your life will be in the doctor’s hands, and you will want to make sure that you trust that, that doctor will do everything in their power to save your life if needed! If that’s something you don’t have though maybe it’s time to switch doctors because in my opinion at least you deserve so much better than that, however at the end of the day it’s your decision not mine so good luck 🙂... Now I also believe that it’s good to have a caring doctor, maybe not completely necessary as long as they’re at least civil/nice plus good at their job, however I know that I personally like having caring doctors as it just makes me feel a tad bit safer, so maybe aim for that goal as well if you feel similar to the way I do, but maybe not exactly dwell on it. If you (or even your child) are fortunate enough to have a caring doctor though maybe do some research on any procedures or surgeries that may get recommended just to make sure that you have all of the possible facts. Honestly though looking up stuff is so easy these days especially with the internet it may not be bad to look up any recommended treatment in general, just beware of Dr. Google haha!
Anyways I’m gonna really go now so I can watch more Squirmy and Grubs videos! Bye everyone!!! 😁👋🏼...

Hi Shane, I'm a bit new to your channel, I just want to let you know that you are a huge inspiration to me. I have Erb's Palsy on my right shoulder due to shoulder dystocia at birth. I nearly died on top of that because I was choking on my mom's umbilical cord. it's really difficult sometimes to do physical activities with it. I thank God every day that I can at least use it somewhat. It was sometimes frustrating for me because I would always have to use my left arm to do more strenuous activities. You are in a way more difficult position and seeing the hope and happiness you carry despite it all really is uplifting, and I'm probably not the only one who feels that way when watching your videos. My prayers go out to you and your family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Keep up the great content. 😁👍

I had a spinal fusion and Harrington rods too, but the surgery/recovery wasn't as long or as intense (and I was 22 years old). My rods only run T10-L3. I'm still crooked, but that's cause my spine is very rotated and one leg is shorter than the other. Shane, I can't imagine going through that at age 7, especially at the intensity of yours. You are awesome, my fellow bionic human.

I had spinal fusion surgery, as well! I had the more common scoliosis onset when I went through puberty and had the fusion done when I was 13. I actually remember the surgeon waking me up during the surgery (before they closed me up) to test my motor functions to make sure I wasn’t paralyzed. I later had to have the bottom portion of my hardware removed due to issues and have also developed flat back syndrome. It’s always interesting to hear about other people’s experiences when they had their fusion!
