I am watching your videos like my bestie watches gaming videos. 😉 I wanted to play bassoon, from flute, but my jr. high band director said no because of my underbite. Another bassoon player was needed in Sr. High, so I just did it. Then and in college I could feel my lower jaw trying to push back, but I played without problems in spite of it. Such interesting parts to play after what flutes play. And darker. After I sell my house I plan to buy a bassoon for myself. A nice one. 😊
I find that my reeds "close up" after extendes use, as in the opening is smaller and the reeds touch eachother and don't let air through when trying to play. Is it bad embouchure, improper care (I hardly rotate reeds, will start now), poor reed quality (I buy pre-made), or something that just happens? Also how can you tell if a reed is wonky and won't produce good sound, or you just can't get very good sound out if it becuase of embouchure?
Reeds can "close up" and not vibrate as freely if the embouchure is pinching, the cane dries out while playing on it (extreme conditions in the Canadian Rockies in winter and this happened to me), or because the wires need adjustment. The easiest way to check a reed is to soak it and then check the crow. How the reed vibrates when the air is blown through it will let you know if the tip opening is too closed before you even get started playing bassoon. Hope this helps!
Your video did really help out with my tone when it comes to A first octave. But I am having trouble figuring out what keys I am suppose to use when it comes to tenor clef.
Thank you Eryn! Definitely this helps! Also would like to ask. Naturally my lower jaw are ever so slightly in front than my top jaw. Is there a way to make it be behind my front jaw? Not sure if you get my question. Haha!
You might naturally have a strong underbite. This is genetic and can't be helped without dental work or surgery. As long as the bottom jaw isn't pinching- I would consider it a WIN! Hope this helps! Happy Bassoon-ing!
A while ago u made a video on affordable reed making tool kit is that a thing that is being worked to become a reality. (Also u mentioned a giveaway is that still happening too
Thank you so much for this video. I am just starting with the bassoon, at a ripe age of 61, and this is exactly what I am looking for.
Happy to help! Congratulations on the new bassoon adventure! :)
I have to mater the bassoon in a month, with no private lessons, but this video helped me a lot even at a young age!
That's great to hear! Let me know if you have any future video requests! Happy Bassooning. :)

thank you I was looking for something like this
My bassoon player is very flat. She definitely has firm corners and is putting enough air through her bassoon as well. Any ideas?
The reed length or bocal number does not match the bassoon. Not her fault!
The reed can also play flat when it is dead.
@@erynoft thank you so much. I just discovered that when I looked at another video and I had her try a new reed
What you say when you play single tongue? Thank You!
Thank you Eryn! Definitely this helps!
