I replaced the cabin filter in my E34 7/8 years ago. Hated it so much! My back was bending in all directions. This is because I’m from the UK and the steering column and pedals are in the way. Filter came in two pieces and even then it was such a difficult task. A task I’d never want to do ever again. You American/LHD E34 lovers are really fortunate.
Hey man I appreciate you making this and the pt. 2! I'm planning on buying a '94 525i and this made me a lot more confident in my ability to perform basic maintenance, and it also made me much more confident in my choice of car especially after hearing the stereotypes of BMWs not being reliable lol, God bless my friend, love the content.
@@MyersMotors I will be watching each and every one of them many times over 😂 there's nothing like M539 Restorations for E34s, but yours is the closest I've come across 🙏 much love from Australia 🦘
Thank you for giving us all simple, easy to follow, well-shot guidance on how to do these changes! I'm gonna follow these (especially the door handle gaskets) when I come to change them on my E34 as well! Thank you - you've earned a sub here!
Excellent, informative video with clear explanations. I've owned an e34 for 18 years and didn't know it was that easy to change the door gasket. Dude you have a great voice, deep and rich, you'd be great at DJ or voice over work!
Also beware of the windshield sprayers. They have an additional pressure regulator right before the sprayer under the hood wich tend to block and leak onto the hood insulation material and then leak over the engine bay. Just remove them and plug the sprayers to the cleaning water lines.
Changing the cabin air filter is a nightmare, I did it years ago following the original brochure wich is terrible (black and white 2 pages diagram ). Recording it must be even worst. Good job.
great video tutorial man! instruction was clear and straight to the point. Look forward to new e34 content as I recently got one and love to work for it myself.
Mann, thanks a lot! I've been a car enthusiast for long time and I finally able to buy my first car as E34. I'm definitely waiting for part two, any tips and tricks would be great always :)
Glad it was helpful, and congrats on the purchase! Definitely a sweet first car. I'm waiting on a few parts to arrive for pt 2, definitely have more projects than I know what to do with right now haha
Great tutorial! I've feared doing my door handles and cabin filter for 10 yrs. no joke! But feel I should tackle it now. A mechanic will charge 1 hr. labor easy for the filter. All 5 series (prior to E60) dating back to later E12s, came with flashlights for the US, and most Euro models - yours is just missing one, which is common. Have you ever changed the blower switch resistor, accessed from the left side of center console? I hear they can cause fires and produce smoke and burning smell as the coils get old.
No time like the present! If I can do it anyone can. As far as the flashlight goes, it actually has a chunk of foam blocking off the socket which is from factory since this car wasn't optioned with one for whatever reason. This car was definitely a special order and it may have been something with shipping it back and forth overseas, needing batteries removed from the car or something. I've never done a blower resistor, no, but I am actually planning to tackle that in a part 2!
Excellent Video... I just got a 540/6 and need to do those jobs on the door handles. The door handles catch open is that related to the gaskets or is that something different?
Thanks! Congrats on the 540, that's awesome! That's not an uncommon issue, I believe it has to do with the actual lubrication of the mechanism. You probably want to pull the door card and grease the joints, but honestly squirting a little WD40 through that little hole that grommet sits in might help.
BMW really screwed the pooch with that cabin air filter. Ridiculously complicated. I have an 01 e320 mercedes and the main filters are behind the glove box. Four screws inside it and it slides out. They're right there. Then remove the lower panel which is hooked in and pull out the two carbon filters. Pretty easy. I changed these shortly after buying the car about five years ago and I could feel the difference in the airflow. There is actually a bypass switch for the carbon filters on the hvac panel. I still like BMWs better than mercedes because I like the way they drive as a result of their suspension set up. I had an 03 530i several years ago. Loved it.
Yeah it is overly complicated on the older cars, I think it was an oversight on the part of the engineers. On all my other newer BMWs the filters are right under the hood, don't even need tools to replace them. Even still, they're all great cars and I honestly prefer the look and feel of the older ones.
@@MyersMotors Did BMW ever add carbon filters like my mercedes? I've seen people work on newer bmws and I remember the filters being right under the hood on the firewall.
every time i see a repair video on these BMW's i am reminded why they have no resale, if you aren't doing all of the work yourself the shop hours to keep one running would break the piggybank in a hurry. Great news for the DIY guys though i guess.
Have you ever replaced a blower motor relay on a car with no a/c? Mine works only on highest setting so I know that this is the issue. I also know where it is located on a car with a/c but I have trouble finding it on my car. Can anyone help me?
@@MyersMotors because of their age, these 30 year old bushings are probably toast. I do prefer to upgrade to 750i or M5 bushings where possible. Don't forget to tighten them under load! Also: I haven't had a single E34 or E32 without tons of play on the steering rack/box/however you name it on the E34. Had my last one rebuilt and it's perfectly fine now.

When doing the cabin air filter, I recommend doing the resistor aswell, very crucial when you want to avoid your car catching on fire
You're correct, I'm planning on including that in a part 2

reminds me of my E32 750. talk about a nostalgia trip 😁 i still remember the smell of the leather
You can pull the gray plastic that the side carpeted cover screws into, makes replaceing the filter way easier.
Thanks for showing these I just bought e34 1991 525i bmw and I’m learning more about this master piece
For sure! Have fun with it! These are some fantastic machines worth putting a little effort into.

Check the trunk lights turn off when closed, the switch fail after so many years, and will drain your battery.

Angry ass solutions provides a solid handle gasket set.
Good to know, thanks
Very nice informative vid. But dang got to take apart half the car just to do a cabin air filter.
Still love e34 .
Thanks! I know, it is a little ridiculous just for a cabin air filter. Absolutely still worthwhile though in my opinion.
Good job, very detailed. mine is E53 X5 with 240k miles on it.
Couldn't have been better timing I am going to look at an e34 525 today for a daily driver. Super helpful vid!

Hello, I have a 1994 BMW E34= Can the A/C condenser be changed out , without removing the front bumper and front grill?
That's one thing I'm really not sure of - I would imagine so, it likely comes out from underneath the car if I'm thinking of it correctly.
How is this car from Germany!! 18:01 .. tye speedometer is in miles/hour!!!...bumpers have orange side reflectors too....that's American spec.!!!
Americans stationed in Europe could order US compliant cars to take back home when complete

It sounds like your car has a "sword" resistor. I'm not familiar with that style, but there should be plenty of info about it on forums
@@MyersMotors sword resistor is found on cars with automatic a/c, mine has something entirely different, I can't find no info on that
This scares me lmao soo many steps
I gotcha. But hey, I was winging it believe it or not. If I can do it so can you!
Those headlights were never available in Germany. Was it a car from an American soldier stationed in Germany?
You're correct, it was specced to be US compliant. The owner was military civilian.
You left "replace all suspension bushings" out.
You're right lol. I've been slowly working through those in recent videos.

shouldve got a 540i
Yeah my bad
The door handle gasket you can make yourself, with what ever quality rubber or foam you want. Just my cheapskate opinion 😂😂.
Another crucial item to replace

what a stupid design for a cabin air filter, an item that should be changed fairly often.
