In 1896, after the death of Doc, Wyatt said in an article: "I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long, lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever knew."
I think Val Kilmer did a great job portraying him.

Most people roll their eyes during the scene where Wyatt runs out in the middle of the river. “That’s so unrealistic.” Crazy thing is, that’s one of the most true to life parts of the movie. The thing about Doc Holiday is that if he hadn't been sick, he wouldn't have been as good as he was. He knew that his illness was terminal and didn't want it to be what kills him, so he would never back down from a fight in hopes that he would one day square of with someone that was better than him. His final words of "this is funny" was kind of an inside joke to himself. He always believed that he would die with his boots on. That is why he said that when he looked at his bare feet.

@@orarinnsnorrason4614 The movie is full of inaccuracies, here are a few. The movie depicted Wyatt Earp wanting to stay out of Law Enforcement, but the real Wyatt Earp ran for county Sherriff, and lost. The movie only talked about three Earp brothers being in Tombstone, when in fact there was five of them there. Two of the Earp brothers, Warren and James, rode with Wyatt on his vendetta ride. Lastly, the shootout between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holiday, the problem with that was when Ringo was killed Doc Holiday was over 600 miles away in Colorado. The official ruling, Johnny Ringo frequently threatened to commit suicide, so it is believed that he shot himself.
What is going for the movie, save for it being a well produced and enjoyable piece of work. The depiction of the gunfight at the Ok Corral, is considered to be one of the most accurate depictions ever done for the silver screen. All the other films before it often had people getting shot who were not even there, and the whole event taking forever, while the actual gunfight lasted around 30 seconds.

He probably drank a good bit (and used other substances) to dull the pain from it, but it didn't stop him from being as badass as he could be. "That woman in the street " was Josephine the dancer he had met at the saloon. She really was the love of his life and was with him when he died in 1929. After the Tombstone chapter, Wyatt and Josephine were “hardly ever apart, though never legally married, for the next 45 years.” They staked mining claims throughout the West, including Alaska, and dabbled in horse racing, real estate, casinos, and even the movie business. She died penniless in December 1944 in Los Angeles, and both she and Wyatt's remains are interred in Colma, Calif. They never had children.

You notice that in the shootout at the OK Corral. Wyatt and his brothers didn’t draw their guns right away. It’s an old school gun handling. You don’t draw your weapon unless you intend to use it. The director captured it perfectly in that scene.

This is the only modern western I will watch repeatedly. Val and Kurt were everything in this movie. Kurt was so into this, that he has a son named Wyatt. A little actor you may recognize as John Walker from Falcon and the Winter Soldier show, perhaps? 😉😁
Val should have gotten an academy award for this or something. He was perfect as Doc Holliday. My favorite line is of course "I'm your Huckleberry."
What's funny is that he sounded just like the Hannah Barbera cartoon character saying that exactly how he did. 🤣 But it works for him.

If you turn on closed captions on the DVD, Blu-Ray, etc, they read, 'huckleberry.' In fact the ONLY place where it says hucklebearer is the internet where many people have bought into the Mandela Effect.

I just came across this reaction and figured I'd add in a little bit of historical trivia:
After the events of Tombstone and the OK Corral, Wyatt Earp spent his twilight years in Los Angeles when the film industry was picking up. He wanted a movie made to show his side of the story regarding Tombstone, and he ended up spending a lot of time as a consultant on the early Western movies. He worked very closely with a young production assistant named Marion Robert Morrison, who he told all his stories and exploits to. These stories inspired the young Marion to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor himself. His given name wasn't quite star material, however, so he took the stage name of John Wayne.

In the old west, it was a bit of an "honor" or "distinction" to die "with your boots on" (i.e in a gunfight as opposed to dying in bed from illness) I know others have commented on Doc Hollday's last words (in the movie and IRL) referencing his surprise that he was doing the latter rather than the former. My purpose is not to repeat that info
But in the real Tombestone there is a graveyard called "Boot Hill" (yes, the cemetery dates from that time period and still exists). "Boot Hill" is reserved for to those who died "with their boots on" (it's where the men the Earps shot in the gunfight at the OK coral are buried I believe) If you re-watch near the beginning when we and the Earps both first drive in Tombestone you catch a glimpse of "Boot Hill" cemetery, (or a replication) and it's most famous headstone (or again, possibly a replication)

Everything that happened in this film is pretty true to life. Wyatt did walk out in the middle of the river and kill Curly Billl. While Curly Bills shotgun blast missed Wyatt. The OK Coral fight was taken from life with things like where Doc used the shotgun to scare the horse then shot the Cowboy in the side. Ike did run up to Wyatt in the middle of it who in fact did say “either get to fighting or get out of the way’ (paraphrased) they did go on a revenge kick against the cowboys after Morgan was killed which was called “ the Earp vendetta Ride” and also killed Frank Stilwell at the train station in real life, and much more. However Doc did not kill Johnny Ringo it’s believed he died form suicide. The reason Doc looks at his feet just before he dies and says “isn’t that funny.” Is because he always thought he would die with his boots on.

What was wrong with Doc Holliday was that he had advanced tuberculosis. His questionable lady friend was Mary Katherine Horony Cummings, aka Big Nose Kate, they were together, on and off, for many years. She nursed him through the worst of his illness. Though we don't see her at the end of the movie, she was caring for him when he died. This movie makes it seem like she was bad for him, but in reality she was pretty devoted to him. I loved that you picked up on that.
Also, the incident at the river when Wyatt walked right into the cross-fire and didn't get shot did really happen, and Doc Holliday was as fast and deadly as depicted. Ike Clanton did survive the war between the Earps and the Cowboys, and was killed later as described.
