Val Kilmer got absolutely robbed. He should of won all the awards for his Doc Holliday. His best acting role bar none.

That was a particularly strong year, and this movie was an after thought because it was a strong movie year in general. It wasn't until it hit the video store circuit that people noticed how great Kilmer was in it.
@@NifferGal jp3813 meant that the other nominees that year were just as strong. 1993 is the year of Jurassic Park, Schindler's List (Ralph Fiennes), The Fugitive ( Tommy Lee Jones - won the Oscar), Who Eats Gilbert's Grape (Dicaprio - maybe to young for Oscar nominee) and in The Name of The Father ( Postlethwaite).
Val Kilmer should at least have been among nominees, no question. But won it? Doc's character and for sure how Val portrays him is just so immensely likeable and iconic, many people claiming he should have won. IMO Val outshines Tommy Lee, no question. The others...debatable.

Doc Holiday as portrayed by Val Kilmer is one of the coolest characters of all time. Also one of the saddest of all time. He was the original anti hero.

It is. I can remember every scene with him in it. Dude nailed that role. Sometimes, there is an actor that defines a role - this was one of those times.
Doc's last words were in reference to the fact that he was barefoot. He thought he would die with his boots on.
“Well I’ll be damned. This is funny.” Is the whole quote.
Johnny Ringo is spasming in his death throes, and Doc Holliday STILL trolls the hell out of him! What a legend!
He wasn't trolling him. "You're no daisy" was out of respect. Johnny Ringo was a lot of horrible things, but he wasn't a pussy.

@Ricardo Spatafore Except when Doc used it earlier in the movie at the OK coral, it was DEFINITELY used as an insult. Johnny Ringo was also DEFINITELY a badass, an evil badass, but a badass nevertheless.

Doc saw Ringo’s draw at the black jack table. He knew right there Ringo was good but not good enough to beat him so he drew with his tin cup instead so as not to give himself away.

Plus...Doc was already a dead man walking, and knew it. The removal of his fear of death made Doc a truly terrifying man...the way Johnny begs Doc to let him go, just an incredible scene.

Seeing it again I never realized how stacked Tombstone is with great actors and future great actors. Of course there are all the big ones at the time like Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton, but in smaller roles you can see Terry O'Quinn (John Locke from Lost) ,Paula Malcomson (Trixie -Deadwood, Maureen -Sons of anarchy) and a host of other actors with a long career like Charlton Heston, Stephen Lang, Billy Bob Thornton,Billy Zane and more.
Straight up! John Locke with 2 kidneys! and Robert Mitchum doing the intro / outro voice overs!

"Im your huckleberry" is the name of Val Kilmers autobiography. The movie is exactly that quotable.
Meanwhile, he signed a beautiful print of Doc walking out of the woods with, "(My name), you were just too high strung."
I always thought it was hucklebearer....That was an old term for someone hauling a casket.

"YOURE NO DAISY" My mom and I used to say that all the time to each other for some reason it always made us smile. They used to play this movie SO much on cable TV in the 90s and early 2000s. Definitely one of the best Wyatt Earp/Doc Holiday movies out there.
One thing I love about this movie is that it doesn't glorify the violence or needlessly paint the Clantons and Cowboys as some sort of super-criminals. Most of the murders we see are either in the heat of the moment during raids, or drunken idiocy, with a few exceptions. And the OK Corral wasn't the sexy gunslinger duel we got in all other Wyatt Earp depictions (including Costner's "Wyatt Earp"), it was basically the pointless slaughter we got in Tombstone.
Val was born to play Doc, he had the best lines by far and his delivery was memorable everytime.

This movie was like a who's who of the greatest second tier actors in movie history. It's like seeing my entire childhood...in entertainment terms...distilled into a single film.
It's also the cinematic version of the Moustache Hall of Fame.
Doc Holliday used to be a dentist but his patients started complaining about his coughing turns out he got TB quits being a dentist and became a gunslinger and professional gambler.
In accurate- while he had a patient in his chair- a man came into his dentistry practice to rob him- and Docs first kill was shooting the man that barged into the practice- he then became a gunslinger shortly afterward

He was actually a real historical character from America's wild west days, same as the rest of the characters in this movie.

I've seen it. Loved it.
I liked The Saint With Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue and of course the classic Willow. Not sure if Willow still holds up. I was 8 or 9 when it came out and watched it dozens of times. Don't think I seen it since then though.
I also recommend The Saint.

You might already know, or maybe you mention it later in the video, but Powers Boothe is also Cy Tolliver in Deadwood. He did a lot of cool shit over the course of his career, but this and Deadwood have got to be his best roles. At the very least they’re the most meme-worthy.
Powers Boothe does one off the Best Narrations ever in a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC programme called ETERNAL ENEMIES . It's BRILLIANT . RIP MR BOOTHE .

The crazy thing about this movie is that it is based upon true events.
I met Michael Biehn aka Johnny Ringo at New York Comic Con 2019 and we talked for about 10 minutes, and he's telling me bits of the history, like the night before the OK Corral shooting, there were Earps and Cowboys just sitting and playing cards together, totally peaceful.
Tombstone is one of the most masculine films. Also, tell Marcus not to feel bad, I'm getting fatter too.

Kate (Doc Holliday's lady) was indeed a very interesting person. She had a lot of different names: Big Nose Kate, Nosey Kate, Katie Elder, Mary Katherine Horony (Yes, that was her real name. Not just a cheesy sexual innuendo 🤣)
It's likely they were drawn to each other because of their similar backgrounds: Wealthy, educated, upper class. Which was quite rare out there in mining towns like Tombstone.
That might sound strange, considering how wild and all over the place they both seemed.
But both had unfortunate circumstances that derailed their bright futures. Doc caught Tuberculosis. Which made his career (dentistry) a pretty bad idea.
No one wants to go to the dentist that has a contagious disease. Especially one they didn't know how to cure yet.
Kate's father was an internationally renown doctor; A surgeon, in fact. So, a very valuable specialist.
On top of that, he was called from Hungary to come serve as the personal doctor to none other than Maximillian I, Emperor of Mexico....Who was overthrown only a couple years after Kate's father moved them there lol
So, Kate and her family moved to the US. I guess her father hoped to have success in private practice. Unfortunately, kate's mother died less than a year later. Her father died very soon after.
So, she was an orphan. But for the first 14 years of her life, she lived a very "high-class" life, and was extremely well educated.
Suddenly, she was without anything, and was too young to have established an adult life, but was old enough to know what a life of privilege was. I guess her adopted family situation must have been unbearable, because she ran away by 17.
Doc was similar. He was brilliant and had money, so he finished dentistry school quite early. So early, he couldn't apply for the permit for a dentistry practice because he wasn't old enough yet. By the time he was old enough, he'd been diagnosed with Consumption and couldn't actually practice anymore.
I think that's why they were so drawn together. They were in similar, very rare situations. He is quoted as saying what he loved about her was that she was as intelligent as himself.
She isn't depicted the way she is in this film as trying to kill him, but rather wanting to live life to the fullest. At the time, Tuberculosis had no cure. She just wanted Doc to enjoy life, rather than live longer but in boredom and misery.
So, she wasn't being very wise, but she wasn't trying to kill him. She just was more concerned about quality of life over length. Which is funny, considering how long she ended up living lol
Unfortunately, they did have a falling out. She was manipulated by someone (probably law enforcement of some type) into either ratting him out or agreeing to say (no one is sure if Doc did it or not) that Doc was involved in some kind of stagecoach holdup. So he left her.
Some say she was simply tricked into signing something when she was drunk, with no knowledge it was a statement saying Doc did this crime. Which is very sad, if true. They seemed like soul mates, and it's terrible that she made a foolish mistake. And terrible he couldn't forgive her.
She lived a very long time after that. I think until about age 90. There were rumors she died in some shootout a couple years later, but there's documentation to the contrary.
Very interesting, sad love story.
Great film and balance of actual events and Hollywood.
True events (reportedly) include:
- The portrayal of the shootout at the OK Coral
- Virgil being shot and losing his arm and Morgan being killed
- The shootout at the river where Wyatt just walked out in the gun fire and killed Curly Bill (Bill Brosius)
- The book Wyatt made for Doc
- Docs last words when he died in the hospital are supposedly his real last words
- Wyatt marrying Josephine
Crazy to think that these scenes and more were based on historical accounts.
Val Kilmer nailed it in this film. Great cast. I get the impression some parts were edited right down, like the Mayor was with the Cowboys and Ike at the end, they were trying to keep the length of the film down which is a good idea, the film is a bit more actiony. It's based on real events and people, Hollywood style :)
One of my favorite movies and the scene in the creek was real which is amazing. Good reaction to a great movie guys well done.
FYI, That bit where Wyatt Earp marches out to the middle of the river and kills Curly Bill Broacius... it happened in real life and it was way more unbelievable than depicted in the movie

Back in 1994, when I first saw the commercial for this movie and they said Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. I cringed because I only knew Kilmer from Top Gun and some other cheesy 80s stuff.
But I was freaking blown away. I’ve seen other people play Doc Holiday and they don’t hold a candle to Kilmer.
I will say that Dennis Quaid in Wyatt Earp comes close. You guys should definitely watch that one. It’s a longer and more historically accurate movie about the Earps directed by Kevin Costner.

The Salton Sea is a very underrated Val Kilmer movie as well with great performances from Vincent DiNofrio.
This is my all time favorite western. Followed swiftly by Open Range and Unforgiven. If y'all haven't seen those, please do!
The Searchers and Tombstone
Harry Carey Jr was in both.
Doc was NOT "bluffing" about how sick he was. He was exactly that sick, but forced himself to go anyway since he knew otherwise Wyatt would be killed. So many people think he was putting on an act, but why would he? And for whom? His best friend? He dragged himself out of bed to save his friend's life. That's the cool part.

even though he did have the Deep Southern accent and possibly dark charisma, his actual story reflects a different less likable type of guy. He was a standard post-Civil War Southerner. In fact the real reason why he stopped being friends with Wyatt Earp in real life was because when Earp started “dating” a Jewish woman, Holliday called him a “Jewboy” because he legitimately detested Jews along with anyone who wasn’t traditionally white.
It’s a classic for me. So quotable by both Doc and Wyatt. Such strong characters to take on the bad guys. What are you gonna do? Stand there and bleed? I’ll be your huckleberry. I was just foolin about, I wasn’t. Kurt Russel even looks like the real Wyatt. We needed tough law men to deal with those evil guys. I liked that they showed that the girl he really liked became his after the Tombstone chapter. His brother Virgil became a law man after Tombstone in California. Some real badass guys. It was sad that Doc died from tuberculosis but I loved that he said Damn as he looked at his bare feet. He was surprised he died in a hospital bed without his boots instead of a gunfight. I think this wrapped the whole story up. Glad you liked it.

I think what gets missed is that Doc Holliday *was* as sick as he seemed. In the end, he used every ounce of effort to be the friend Earp needed.

When Doc was lying in the hospital bed he looked at his bare feet and said, "Well I'll be damned!". It was a joke. In the old west, as the saying goes, the gunslingers were said to have "Died with their boots on!". Ironically, Doc died with bare feet! It was the writers making a joke about the old west, and the accepted myths of the old west.
Tombstone great film another good one is young guns.

I have not watched this movie yet. One of my favorite stories about that Colladay was when he died he looked down at his feet and left because he didn’t have his boots on. He always figured he would die with his boots on. In other words someone would kill him

Roy Halladay has been called Doc Halladay since he 1st entered MLB when the Blue Jays announcer called him Doc. I've never met anyone who watched baseball and was aware of him that didn't refer to him as Doc Halladay. The nickname Doc stuck so well they even reference it on his wikipedia page.

Kevin Jarre was the original director for this movie and had a lot of issues as his original script was being changed. Stallone suggested to Kurt Russell he hire Georgo P Cosmatos as Stallone used him for First Blood part 2 while Stallone Ghost directed that movie. Kurt Russell agreed to use him while he ghost directed Tombstone. Kurt Russell promised Cosmatos he wouldn't tell anyone who really directed Tombstone until after Cosmatos passed away.
Apparently Kurt has said in interviews there is a much longer directors cut he's been working on for years that expands on everyone's story.
Another good Val Kilmer movie is the Ghost and the Darkness.
Supposedly those were Doc’s last words. “This is funny.” He was referring to the fact that he wasn’t going to die with his boots on. There was an old saying “die with your boots on” or “died with his boots on.” In other words, “die fighting.”

Man it was the Wiatt Erp Movie featuring doc holiday.
Another epic movie with Val Kilmer is "HEAT" with Robert De Niro & Al Pacino...many great movies.."The Saint, "The ghost and the darkness" ....But this performance as Doc holiday was brilliant.
Stick with the Kurt Russel train and check out Soldier(1998). Or does that just show how old I am?

Val Kilmer had all the talent. Apparently he became difficult to work with as his star was rising in the 90's. If things had lined up differently he could have been a huge star. He was a better craftsman/technician as an actor than any of the movie stars that came from the 90's. His performance in "The Doors" is pretty underrated.
Another movie version of the same story came out that same year, called "Wyatt Earp" - overall, Tombstone was the better film, but Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday was just as good as Val Kilmer. We called it the year of the duelling Doc Hollidays, and literally eveyone I knew was shocked when neither one of them was nominated for the Best Supporting Oscar.

It has long been rumored the Kirk Russell directed this movie. A rumor confirmed by several other actors including Val Kilmer. The Original director Kevin Jerre was said to have been overwhelmed being this was his first directing job. After he was fired by the producer, they brought in George Cosmatos to finish the film. But it was said, he was more of a "ghost" director because Russell was doing the job.
And he did a hell of a good job.
Best modern western... period.
