@@graffic13I kept misspeaking but I also do know much more about the musical than the movie and while I’m embarrassed that came through that’s on me I DEFINITELY should’ve rewatched the movie before scripting this 🤦🏻♀️
the time period is such an important part of the story because it's calling out a niche sub culture that just doesn't exist in the same way anymore. modernizing it and especially in this way where the heathers are all minorities is utterly baffling because it goes against the entire point of the story. did anyone involved even watch the musical let alone the movie itself
When I describe why Heathers is a dark comedy I usually describe it to people as a pre-Columbine movie. ans the musical sticks to that with keeping the setting. this is just a mess
Exactly! In the 80s, casual racism, homophobia, and misogyny was kind of the norm and you see a lot of it throughout the original movie (well, the racism not so much, but you get the idea). It's a time period that excused that kind of behaviour and Heathers was not afraid to call it out. That's why it was so ahead of its time.
If there’s one modern trope that is progressively crawling further under my skin, it’s the “woke bully”. Teen drama writers seem to have this idea that high school mean girl tropes have evolved into weaponizing their status as a minority to get popular. How do I tell modern writers, as a recent high school graduate, anyone who uses their minority status to hold over people’s heads would be universally ignored and bullied? It’s like they saw 2012 Tumblr and confused it for how social hierarchy works in real life. I’m fine with the message that anyone can be a dick, there are assholes in every group, but we’ve had mean girl/mean boy types that fit into pretty much every category by now WITHOUT having to turn to the camera and say “Yeah, I’m gay, and I’m bullying my classmates. With my gayness, in fact. Everyone at school takes my threats to call them homophobes on my tiktok so seriously they worship me. Ignore my money, charisma, attractiveness, whatever. None of these things that have affected school popularity for centuries apply anymore. Only the minority can be the popular. This absolutely wasn’t written by a man who hasn’t been to high school in 30 years and doesn’t know why his 16 y/o is no longer talking to him after he said them being non-binary is ‘probably gonna pass over.’”
Literally like i wouldnt wield my identity as a weapon against ppl but i was a loud queer kid with undiagnosed adhd n a passion for social issues during the mid 2010s (which is probably the real archetype they based the characters on) n most ppl just thought i was annoying n while i did get ppl to mostly stop saying bigoted shit around me it wasnt bc they were scared of being cancelled it was bc they didnt wanna get lectured by me for the 20th time on why they shouldnt be using the f slur
@@GlamClan-xe3ziShe wasn't part of this trope at all in my opinion. She didn't leverage her sexuality against anyone, nor did it give her any social credits once she was forcibly outed. She was a bully as a presumed straight girl, and people just kinda left her alone afterwards.
The change to trying to kill Heather C with a red pill instead of with blue cleaning chemicals is a really strange change and I feel like it's kind of a stupid one. The whole thing is that she was killed with Veronica's signature color, plus even though green is the real opposite of red, I feel like blue is more seen as the opposite of red in general culture.
The Heathers NOT being the popular, problematic blond girls defeats the entire point of the Heathers (as characters and a movie). They're the ideal teenagers, they're the people who can get away with anything they want because they're pretty and privileged. It defeats the entire point of everyone caring about Heather Chandler (and Kurt & Ram)'s 'suicide' but not only not caring, but actively making fun of, Martha trying to commit suicide
The point is, popular individuals today aren't confined to the stereotypical image of blonde, skinny girls. The narrative has evolved to embrace diversity - popular girls can be black, plus-sized, gay, or from various backgrounds. In 2020, the dynamics have shifted; it's not about perpetuating outdated stereotypes. Also, considering today's reality, the notion that only white kids misbehaving fits the popular narrative is an outdated perspective. The landscape has changed, and our understanding should too.
@@charliefan9516 The popular girls are pretty similar nowdays lol. Maybe they're more "diverse" and aren't really 3. But they still fulfill the other stereotypes.
JD’s mom is played by Shannen Doherty, the original Heather Duke from the 1988 Heathers movie, so to me because the original Heather Duke became such a nasty person after the death of OG Heather Chandler, this is like she’s trying to corrupt more people like she was corrupted in the movie.
Jd's mom is definitely supposed to be Heather Duke. They have the same actor, she has the red scrunchie she stole from Heather's locker, and she says "pulling on my dick," which was Heather Duke's line in the movie
Also because I’m a total loser nerd: the Heaven prom ending was actually pitched as the ending for the 1989 film! I think it’s cool that they gave that ending a chance to see the light of day I just wish it was for a show that wasn’t total dog ass
I always thought there was a good version of this that could have existed where Veronica and JD were an analog for the sort of alt-right people that see minorities as the new heathers/mean girls, and themselves as the cool rebel social outcasts for refusing to "conform to the woke left". I really hoped that's what this show would be, an open criticism of that line of thinking. Veronica finds herself falling down an alt-right pipeline by being with JD, and similar to the original, realizes that she's being sucked into something dangerous and wrong and ends up stopping him at the end. Obviously I was disappointed.
Actually mean girls has more in common with Heathers than you think. The director of the original mean girls is the brother of the director of the original heathers, so you're not far off.
Wait so they gave Veronica a skinny bestie but made the mean girl the fat one that gets called “fatty” even tho in the original story, the fat shaming causes Veronica’s friend to nearly kill herself???
i think you're conflating the original with the musical remake. betty is veronica's friend in the original, but martha is the one who attempts to kill herself. martha and veronica aren't friends in the original until the end.
@@Astrolionking you’ve probably never seen the original movie then. i’d really recommend it, especially if you consider yourself a fan of the musical remake.
I feel like in the original it’s even more impactful because Martha is completely apart from the Heathers and Veronica and JD. She is the only completely innocent bystander in the story and faces absolutely horrific consequences simply because she was fat. It’s sort of disgusting the way they changed things around. Even the way things change in the musical is a little iffy. Martha’s suicide attempt is the most important part of the entire movie specifically because of her place in the story.
The confidence of the showrunner to believe they would get a second season and even bigger confidence that a French Revolution setting would make sense
This kills me because you could totally do a modern heathers. Bullying has changed in its tactics but not its motivation, and you could do a lot with that. You could even take the whole “woke bully” angle and use it to comment on how a lot of bullies now use the language of social justice (badly and misusing all of it obv) to gang up on someone and ostracize them while protecting themselves from criticism. You could even do something with the whole transphobic “bathroom panic” thing going on atm by having the target of the Heathers be a trans girl who they spread lies about being a predator or pervert just because she used the girls bathroom. That might be a little too heavy but you know what I mean. This show just feels like a total waste of money and resources for something that fundamentally doesn’t understand or care about the original story at all.
the "woke bully" thing you were talking about has, from what I've seen, mostly manifested itself as people using terms regarding mental health to put people down. such as calling peope-pleasers "manipulators" and using boundaries to silence a victim. (for example an abuser will tell their victim to keep quiet but say is "setting boundaries" do their victim is more willing to keep quiet.) which I wouldn't say it's intentionally using social justice language it's probably moreso just that language being used poorly and people not knowing what those words actually mean. but there is also "I am literally neurodivergent and a minor" so I mean yeah definitely could've done something wit that I know online there's people who will pretend to be very progressive to make people not look into them more and see that they said some effed up stuff.
so true! also, the og heathers had a subtle message about the media abusing teens suicides for stories, very poignant in the modern day with social media. they could also pull in cyberbullying. the potential is endless and they somehow missed all of it.
If they wanted to dunk on the left they could have just made a character who's a feminist but one that doesn't care about women of color or disabled women; or have one character who is queer but makes transphobic remarks or jokes because those are things that can be quite common in left spaces
Honestly, I don’t even know if that’s what they were trying to do tho. In interviews, they claim that making the Heathers queer was “updating” it and seemed to have done so with the intention of being positive representation, so it seems like JD and Veronica were supposed to be worse in this version? But then the Heathers themselves are unreasonable hypocrites, so we should side with JD and Veronica? Is it somewhere in the middle where everyone is awful? To me, the messaging of this show is muddled and confusing that I don’t even know who it’s for. A lot of conservative people saw it as woke propaganda, and a lot of liberal people saw it as mocking liberals. It seems no one can actually agree with who this show was meant to cater to.
@@gregjayonnaise8314 it's giving VELMA vibes; trying to be progressive while at the same time actually being conservative, so it ends up being really weird and catering/appealing to no one.
Nooo cause that would make them on their side! They don’t care about women, but definitely not woc or disabled women! And they absolutely loathe queer people but especially trans people!
As a former Anti-SJW/centrist myself i guess that it probably is criticizing leftists regardless of what side of the spectrum of liberalism or leftists as long as they could be put under the "SJW" umbrella (which speaking from experience is what tends to happen. If you have even centre left values but talk about systemic bigotry, representation, etc. it all gets squashed under the same umbrella as all the same when it's not)
With the success of the musical around this time, I don’t know how they messed up this badly lol like they had a very popular adaptation to pull from already
The musical is already a quite modern version of Heathers. They tightened the script and pacing. My favorite part has to be when they made JD more symphatetic than the Christian Slater version. This one felt like a leap backwards
NGL as someone who refuses to see this show and only knows the plot from this video. I love the ending with everyone having fun while JD and Vernoica suffer for eternity. The two of them came off as people who enjoyed others being miserable so this is a perfect punishment for them. Happiness!
Fun fact, (if I remember this right), the original ending of heathers was gonna be like this, but they didn't have enough money in the budget. I heard this from an interview with the creators.
@@Reaper-AzurwrathThey made like a handful of different endings to try the Heaven one however wasn't cut due to budget but cause the executives didn't like how dark the ending was. That was their reason for axing a good handful of endings was they were to dark for what they wanted. Funnily enough however in the movie 'Voices' staring Ryan Reynolds this exact ending plays out. His character who is a serial killer is blown up and it cuts to him dancing to music in heaven with his dead parents, all the people he killed, and Jesus.
@Alexenarain Omg I watched that movie recently without ever having heard of it before watching. It felt like some weird ass fever dream. And that bastard cat man
27:55 For those who don't know, the word "anachronism" is pretty much defined as something that shows up in a time period that shouldn't have that thin. An example would be the fact that the song "Make The World Go Away" is one of the songs that plays on the radio in GTA San Andreas, despite the fact that the game take place in 1992 and the song in question released in 1999.
@@5th_cellar Yes, but like I said, the version that appears in-game didn't come out until 1999, making the song anachronistic to the year that the game takes place.
@@5th_cellar I know, right? I feel like the reason they went with the Eddy Arnold version (1999) rather than the Elvis Presley cover (1975) is clearly because they thought Elvis Presley's version would have stuck out too much alongside the other country songs they chose for the game, especially since Elvis' music style was primarily rockabilly. Not that I'm complaining about the lack of Elvis in the game, though, and this is where I go off on a rant about the history of how Italian-Americans appropriated African-American music. Elvis may have been a talented singer, but he was still a sleaze bag who stole his style and his early songs from Muddy Waters. Elvis was pretty much the Frank Sinatra of rock music, except, to my knowledge, Sinatra didn't have to screw over an African-American man to become successful, he simply adopted the styles of jazz, which at the time, just like rock in the '50s, was primarily an African-American style of music at around the time Sinatra began his career. Jazz music, to my knowledge, originated in the speakeasies and underground clubs of the Roaring '20s. Many African-Americans saw these places as somewhat of a refuge, since they were the few places where they, if my knowledge is correct, were seemingly able to get along rather decently with those of European descent, brought together by alcohol and the goal of escaping persecution at the hands of the law. Suprisingly for a light-skinned man with alleged Mafia ties in the pre-MLK era of American history, I heard that he once stood up for an African-American who was being harrased by people of European descent, and yes, I believe anybody who was openly against racism during that era should be commended as a pioneer of the civil rights movement.
There were perhaps 6 or 7 genuinely good and great moments and scenes in this reboot. However, 6 good/great moments within a 10 hour show does not a good show make. No bueno
It's impressive that Peathers has the Left believing it was made to pander to the Right, and the Right believing it was made to pander to the Left. Truly an impressive feat
@@prettyrat. as another leftist i think it was to be like a retelling of heathers but in a what old conservatives think reality is? Cuz most of the characterisation is very conservative twt characterisations of marginalised people and the world lol, i think it was just meant to be that but cuz there was no thought that went into it, it ended up being this.
Tbh…I DID forget this existed. It blipped on my radar when it was first announced and I barley made it through the trailer before deciding it wasn’t worth my time, and haven’t so much as glimpsed at it since.
Damn, that’s depressing because in a show that’s already considered the Chernobyl of teen shows, that Heathers musical is usually topping the Worst Episodes list
IMO, Riverdale did it with ignorance rather than disrespect. It's like a five-year-old singing Queen Of The Night. Yeah, it's terrible but what else were we expecting?
The red scrunchie worn by JD's Mum is in reference to Shannen Doherty's character when she became "the top heather" in the original and had a red scrunchie that Veronica takes out of her hair at the end of the movie. Because Shannen plays both characters, it was a nod to this.
I think this show tried too hard to be edgy and it changed stuff for the worse. Anyways great video I love the song I'm probably going to rewatch the musical after this because it's better then the show.
Heather Duke was played by a guy who graduated validictorian from my same highschool in 2009. his signature is on the wall backstage in the auditorium with the ones of every other senior who's passed through. I found out because I saw him do an amazing stand up comedy special and when looking for more, found his grad speech.
i swear this came out and everyone instantly just stopped talking about it. this is the first time i've heard it be mentioned against outside of when the show first dropped. now that's when you know you've made a masterpiece!
I’d be fine with it being modernized, but they took the most boring predictable route possible. Imagine if it was satirizing Riverdale/13 Reasons Why tropes the same way the original did with 80s movie tropes. Imagine the cops finding Kurt and Ram’s forged no-life note and go “oh my god… was it that MYSTERIOUS MONSTER SIGHTING we saw on tv??” Or JD had this monologue about how he’s too quirky for soceity
Shannon Doherty ( OG Heather Duke) is JD's mom so I think the red scrunchie is supposed to be a nod to when Heather D. tried to take over after Chandler died.
I’m sorry I voted for you to watch this haha. This is a nightmare. The musical is my favorite version of Heathers, I personally think it’s better than the original movie. Look, as someone who loves the Heathers and Mean Girls musicals, I 100% agree with and understand the comparison. Unpopular girl gets popular, three girls are the “queen bees” of the school, main character tries to take down the main “mean girl”, main character loses herself for a while before remembering who she’s meant to be by the end. The big difference is that people die in Heathers.
Honestly, because Veronica stole the red scrunchy in the og ending I genuinely thought for a sec the reboot mom mightve been Veronica.. imagine naming your son after your psycho highschool ex
I was SO excited for this reimagining because I loved the original movie and the musical. I never even finished the first episode because it was just SO AWFUL 😭 I need to know what they were actually thinking with this
"Privileged bully who uses Social Justice-isms to seem like they're the good guy but it really only emphasizes they're the privileged bully" was literally done correctly in _American Psycho._ Like. _Pleathers_ failed so badly it makes Patrick Bateman look subtle and understated. It shouldn't be possible to fail that hard and still get distribution rights
I saw this video and I freaked out because Heathers. Then you mentioned Hatchetfield and I literally ran around my room in awe because I’m at the peak of my Starkid (specifically Hatchetfield) hyper fixation.
it’s just crazy to me that they tried to get a guy kicked out of his university because he was wearing a shirt with a caricature of a native man on it, when the shirt was the university’s mascot. like “hey look you should kick him out because he’s wearing your racist mascot!!”
Athena great review! But JD's mom here (Shannon Dortey) was the original Heather Duke who took Heather Chandler's sruchine at the end of the og movie before Veronica snatches it after the explosion.
A couple things that also bothered me , is the representation of Heather Duke . The real mean girl. She was supposed to be bulimic, a detail that goes unchecked, but explains a lot of her meanness and insecurity. Pushed by chandler . As an ex bulimic myself I can confirm it breaks you down as a person and poison’s your personality. Also Veronica was awful in this, she wasn’t the best person in the musical either but she’s a teenager just making dumb decisions and mistakes and is not a bad person at all. As a person who had a crush on JD, jail time whoever wrote his lines 😭 Heather chandler is mean rude and awful in the musical but she is so fabulous you just love her as the mythic bitch Heather McNamara was my favorite yellow girlie, wtf happened to her!? She was supposed to be a softer mean girl. Now she’s so boring?? The writing ruined her. And Martha!! Why did they have to ruin her like that 💀💀 I rlly wish they went closer to what the musical was it rlly disappointed me since I’ve been a fan of heathers since I was 9-10 years old (yea ik it wasn’t the best thing at that age but I got into it since I’m an artist and I watched a lot of animatics and stuff so that explains itself) Soon in 2024 they’re gonna release mean girls the musical , and they made a way better job at this than Heathers which is just awful since heathers walked so mean girls could run!! Why couldn’t they do the same for Heathers??Anyways that’s a mini rant I’m so sorry it’s long.
Hooooly fucking shit I'm a Heathers fan and somehow absolutely COMPLETELY forgot this existed despite how hard this was dragged in the community. My brain was trying to protect me by yeeting this disaster out of the ol' memory bank lmfaooo.
The ending where Veronica lets everyone blow up and they're all shown in a happy prom heaven was actually the scrapped ending for the original 1988 film. The film's writer was really frustrated that it was never used, but I'm glad they didn't. It's a shit ending. It works a bit better in this terrible show, if only because everyone is so annoying that it's not a real loss. Despite the cynical tone of the film and musical, I care about Veronica, Heather M., Martha, etc, and letting them survive gives a hopeful message about not letting the depressing chaos of high school drag you down. That message is lost in this show, since it seems they were more interested in adding more cynicism, more murder, and more sassy one liners. Also, on the batshit concept of "Wokeness has gone mad! Fat/lgbt kids are the new popular bitches!"- They really assumed, in the age of the Kardashians and instagram beauty standards, that conventionally attractive straight kids wouldn't still be in charge?! I read the weird comments from the showrunner- he needs to get off twitter and take a look outside for once.
my reaction to your upload schedule was ‘oh how much content can you get from a failed pilot from 2018?’ but eager to watch. and to my shock, horror, and awe, I learn they made MORE episodes!! Insane! Really enjoyed this video, the searching for comedy joke made me laugh a lot and there are so many great parts like the dubbed over “theres nothing behind her eyes” that really stuck with me lmao. Great kick off to december, excited for the rest!!
"it could've been like Starkid's Hatchetfield" i was not expecting that reference since i had just finished watching Nerdy Prudes Must Die right before this video
They had actually delayed the series TWICE because of two separate school shootings and Paramount felt like it would be insensitive/too soon, and eventually Viacom called to drop the show. Somehow, it premiered in HBO Europe and then (unfortunately) finally premiered in the U.S with numerous cuts for content. In my opinion, Viacom should have dropped it after the first shooting happened.
OMG I totally forgot about that show. I watched the first episode and stopped because it also gave me ‘this is the future liberal wants’ vibes. Finally I’ll know what happens next
ignoring the actual heathers plot, two teens being so fucked up that they just kill everyone who is slighltly mean to them is a good horror plot, espec the ending where theyre in hell and everyones dead but comparing it to the heathers is like eughhh
Sometimes I feel like modernizing Heathers could be possible and this show just did an awful job at it (making the Heathers minorities while Veronica is a pretty standard white girl, all the multiple nonsense changes, trying way too hard with the "woke" stuff to the point I have no clue if it's in favor of or against it,etc) but... It's probably a lie. Heathers probably doesn't work at all in modern times and thus it is better to keep it in the 80s I want to feel like it could work but the more I think about it the more I doubt it.
I haven’t watched the show but from what you said the ending with the couple sounds the most satisfying to me. (I might just be crazy) but I feel that it’s the best punishment for someone like that, watching all the people they dispise be happy while they are invisible and ignored, that’s kind of poetic. I’m not saying the show is good but I want to see that done in something that is actually good.
I didn’t even know this existed 💀 and I’d say I’m a heathers fan, especially in 2018 Also I agree with Athena that there’s really no good time for a show in the US to make a school shooting joke because yeah.. shit happens too often here to joke about it.. love living here 🙃
The version of the show proposed to the Bravo network was going to take place years after the original with a niece of Veronica dealing with a similar trio of queen bees.
Did you ever do an analysis on that cartoon movie from the early 00s "Grandma got run over by a reindeer"?😭 that movie was such a trip. Like why are you suing Santa
Heathers 2018 is the only reason why I’m happy that I got to see a local heathers musical from a teen theater company that my friend from Catholic school played Veronica instead.
the way my autistic ass gasped when you said starkid because that's been my main spin for the last month 😭 but also, no matter how many videos i watch ab this show, it doesn't stop being shocking
The "lick it up!" Was supposed to be a nod to the original movie. In the original, Veronica basically puked on Heather chandler's feet after going to a party after saying she doesn't feel well all night. Heather then confronts her basically saying "i get you into a party and what thanks do i get? It's in the hallway floor. I got paid in puke." And Veronica shoots back with "lick it up!" Basically insulting Heather to her face.
Athena you should do a camp or cringe on insatiable because it has SO many plot twists and it’s just so shocking how much stuff goes on in two seasons and I would LOVE to hear your opinion on it
i just started watching you a couple months ago and ive gone back on your videos (bc i cant get enough) and watching how comfortable you are being yourself in front of the camera is so amazing. ive noticed in your recent videos you are a lot more relaxed and animated and i am loving every min. the small skits and and rants feel so fun, it gives more of a personal feeling like we are on face time after binge watching childhood movies/shows. i love every time you post thank you for putting so much effort and love into your videos
An anachronism is anything in a piece of historical fiction that would not make sense, or did not exist, at the time the media takes place in. Since _Heathers Revolution_ was going to be in France in the late 1700s, where and when Marie Antoinette lived, the anachronisms would probably be modern-day high school things that were in season 1 and did not exist in the late 1700s, such as cell phones (invented in 2009), cars (1886), and high school (1801). The word "anachronism" likely comes from "ana-," meaning "against," and "chronos," meaning "time."
One your hair looks so good and two thank you for your videos. I’m having a horrible night and your videos always seem to cheer me up so much. Never stop being you❤
Two shootings, actually. It got to the point where Viacom dropped it entirely and it became lost media for a few months before some idiot decided to premire the show on the Paramount Network over the course of a few nights.
Btw, I'm waiting until she realizes that JD's mom is H. Duke and is weird that you named your son after the guy who dated your friend and manipulated you
hey Athena, here is how to say "anachronisms". say "an", then "a" with a short A sound, and then "chron" with the "o" being a long O sound, and finally "isms".
This has little to nothing to do with the video, but knowing you’re a Smosh fan AND a Starkid fan too just makes me so happy!!! It would be cool if you could cover the Hatchetfield trilogy and Nightmare Time in order, just to have a chance to rant about something good for once lol 😂
Brett Pooper came out of nowhere and I was taken aback to say the least. I’m not surprised she got cast in something as red pilled as this god awful adaptation.
Dude, Mean Girls was strongly inspired by Heathers, Jawbreakers, and more. That's part of the beauty. If someone is upset by that, they really need to go back and rewatch all of these movies in order of the times they came out
Oh here we freaking go 🙌 My favorite version is actually the musical, and even though the musical makes changes to the musical that aren’t in the 80s, I genuinely think those changes add to the plot and characters. 2018’s show… 😬👀

Basically because all American teenagers in the 80s were sociopaths. Lol

Santana Lopez from glee was the only exception to this trope in my opinion without it being too cringey

Blue is opposite for subtractive color (cmyk / paint) but green is opposite for additive color (rgb / light). Definitely agree with you though
Yeah blue and red are usually used to depict enemies and whatnot, like Fire and Water 🔥💧
@@KingOfGaymesholy shit, Yami spotted out in the wild 😭
I was tryna say this but couldn't think of how to phrase it! you totally killed it!
Errmmm actually the opposite of red is cyan
The Heathers NOT being the popular, problematic blond girls defeats the entire point of the Heathers (as characters and a movie).
They're the ideal teenagers, they're the people who can get away with anything they want because they're pretty and privileged. It defeats the entire point of everyone caring about Heather Chandler (and Kurt & Ram)'s 'suicide' but not only not caring, but actively making fun of, Martha trying to commit suicide
Didn’t a lot of the students in the original only pretend to care about Heather C and Kurt and Ram because they wanted to be popular?
@@GalaxyJakeYT yeah they did! Veronica even tells JD that a girl on who was talking about Heather TV "hated Heather"
The landscape has changed, and our understanding should too.
but they haven't though it may seem like that online but in real life the status quo has remained fairly similar to that of the past @@charliefan9516
@@charliefan9516 The popular girls are pretty similar nowdays lol. Maybe they're more "diverse" and aren't really 3. But they still fulfill the other stereotypes.
JD’s mom is played by Shannen Doherty, the original Heather Duke from the 1988 Heathers movie, so to me because the original Heather Duke became such a nasty person after the death of OG Heather Chandler, this is like she’s trying to corrupt more people like she was corrupted in the movie.
she corrupted the show that's why it was saur bad
Jd's mom is definitely supposed to be Heather Duke. They have the same actor, she has the red scrunchie she stole from Heather's locker, and she says "pulling on my dick," which was Heather Duke's line in the movie
She's sadly just passed away, RIP to her she was a fantastic actress. All the love to her friends and family ❤️:(
R.i.p. Shannen Doherty. 🕊
Also because I’m a total loser nerd: the Heaven prom ending was actually pitched as the ending for the 1989 film! I think it’s cool that they gave that ending a chance to see the light of day I just wish it was for a show that wasn’t total dog ass
That’s actually so cool! I remember really liking the idea of the heaven prom despite the show being… what it was
I always thought there was a good version of this that could have existed where Veronica and JD were an analog for the sort of alt-right people that see minorities as the new heathers/mean girls, and themselves as the cool rebel social outcasts for refusing to "conform to the woke left".
That sounds amazing. We were robbed!!
By just changing the names, we could still make that version a reality.
No bcs this premise is actually really good, you should have written the show
I thought so too, especially when they showed her as a blonde instead of a brunette 😅
This is an Extremely Online plot premise and alien to the profound majority of people who might watch the show.
Actually mean girls has more in common with Heathers than you think. The director of the original mean girls is the brother of the director of the original heathers, so you're not far off.
You learn something new everyday.

i think you're conflating the original with the musical remake. betty is veronica's friend in the original, but martha is the one who attempts to kill herself. martha and veronica aren't friends in the original until the end.
@@techi4584ah I see I never knew that
@@Astrolionking you’ve probably never seen the original movie then. i’d really recommend it, especially if you consider yourself a fan of the musical remake.
(for example an abuser will tell their victim to keep quiet but say is "setting boundaries" do their victim is more willing to keep quiet.)
which I wouldn't say it's intentionally using social justice language it's probably moreso just that language being used poorly and people not knowing what those words actually mean.
but there is also "I am literally neurodivergent and a minor" so
I mean yeah definitely could've done something wit that
I know online there's people who will pretend to be very progressive to make people not look into them more and see that they said some effed up stuff.
so true! also, the og heathers had a subtle message about the media abusing teens suicides for stories, very poignant in the modern day with social media. they could also pull in cyberbullying. the potential is endless and they somehow missed all of it.

That would require them to be educated or slightly more left wing educated lol but there was no thought that went into this so no shit they didnt.

Ironically, there were plenty other versions of that song to use that WOULD have already existed
@@5th_cellar Yes, but like I said, the version that appears in-game didn't come out until 1999, making the song anachronistic to the year that the game takes place.
@@RandomghoulZX I didn't disagree, just pointed out they had such an easy fix
The ending is lowkey funny and satisfying. Now no one will remember Heather Chandler and JD and Veronica will be miserable forever.
There were perhaps 6 or 7 genuinely good and great moments and scenes in this reboot. However, 6 good/great moments within a 10 hour show does not a good show make. No bueno

I agree, this was so trash that I now have to compliment the Riverdale version.
they only committed to it for an episode, that was a low bar to pass
Damn, that’s depressing because in a show that’s already considered the Chernobyl of teen shows, that Heathers musical is usually topping the Worst Episodes list

The red scrunchie worn by JD's Mum is in reference to Shannen Doherty's character when she became "the top heather" in the original and had a red scrunchie that Veronica takes out of her hair at the end of the movie. Because Shannen plays both characters, it was a nod to this.

i swear this came out and everyone instantly just stopped talking about it. this is the first time i've heard it be mentioned against outside of when the show first dropped. now that's when you know you've made a masterpiece!
Heathers is the aggressive and cynical big sister to Mean Girls' catty and passive little sister.

As a person who had a crush on JD, jail time whoever wrote his lines 😭
Heather chandler is mean rude and awful in the musical but she is so fabulous you just love her as the mythic bitch
Heather McNamara was my favorite yellow girlie, wtf happened to her!? She was supposed to be a softer mean girl. Now she’s so boring?? The writing ruined her.
And Martha!! Why did they have to ruin her like that 💀💀
I rlly wish they went closer to what the musical was it rlly disappointed me since I’ve been a fan of heathers since I was 9-10 years old (yea ik it wasn’t the best thing at that age but I got into it since I’m an artist and I watched a lot of animatics and stuff so that explains itself)
Soon in 2024 they’re gonna release mean girls the musical , and they made a way better job at this than Heathers which is just awful since heathers walked so mean girls could run!!
It would have been more realistic to show the popular girls ‘making out’ and ‘being allys’ for the trend but then bullying actual lgbt kids.
Honestly, JD's dad collecting that sort of stuff is one of the few things that makes sense and is genuinely in line with him in every version

ignoring the actual heathers plot, two teens being so fucked up that they just kill everyone who is slighltly mean to them is a good horror plot, espec the ending where theyre in hell and everyones dead but comparing it to the heathers is like eughhh
Heathers probably doesn't work at all in modern times and thus it is better to keep it in the 80s

I got paid in puke." And Veronica shoots back with "lick it up!" An anachronism is anything in a piece of historical fiction that would not make sense, or did not exist, at the time the media takes place in.

Not so fun fact: the reason why this show’s premiere got delayed was because there was a school shooting shortly beforehand. Ironic.
Two shootings, actually. It got to the point where Viacom dropped it entirely and it became lost media for a few months before some idiot decided to premire the show on the Paramount Network over the course of a few nights.
Btw, I'm waiting until she realizes that JD's mom is H. Duke and is weird that you named your son after the guy who dated your friend and manipulated you
I get Mean Girls and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen mixed up sometimes bc Lindsay Lohan did them in the same year.
You slayed this look! I love your videos so much, you are so real and I love your humor! Can't wait for the next one
Wait, but I would love to see a Starkid Hatchetfield lore breakdown now that I know you’re a fan I caught that mention haha
Oh thank goodness, someone finally made a video essay on this show. I’ve been refusing to watch it for 5 years. 😂
Omfg i remember talking to my ex about how bad the pilot was-
i was literally JUST thinking about this series earlier today, THANK YOU for doing this deep dive for REAL.
Yes, thank you for saying the musical is the real one! Even though I love the movie too
hey Athena, here is how to say "anachronisms".
say "an", then "a" with a short A sound, and then "chron" with the "o" being a long O sound, and finally "isms".
I’m not surprised she got cast in something as red pilled as this god awful adaptation.
i guess you can say, we stepped into Athena’s candy store
Dude, Mean Girls was strongly inspired by Heathers, Jawbreakers, and more. That's part of the beauty. If someone is upset by that, they really need to go back and rewatch all of these movies in order of the times they came out
Loved how you switched scrunchies
The original is my favorite movie ever. This show was so upsetting to teenage me.
Oh here we freaking go 🙌
My favorite version is actually the musical, and even though the musical makes changes to the musical that aren’t in the 80s, I genuinely think those changes add to the plot and characters. 2018’s show… 😬👀
That's kind of an interesting ending, i think I heard the original ending for Heathers was that JD successfully blows up the school, and everyone has prom in heaven. Not saying the show is good, just what i remembered
