I believe "Blue" offers a stronger portrayal of the story. While I understand the intent behind "You're Welcome," I personally gravitate towards satirical and subtly dark songs that engage rather than overwhelm. While I appreciate musical intensity, I find that "Blue" presents richer possibilities for gripping drama and intricate staging compared to the rather blunt "You're Welcome."

The song 'I say no' was a whole new song for when Veronica breaks up with JD. (They are both on the West End cast recording so maybe if you listen to those it will make more sense.)

Okay, to clear up exactly what happened in between the New York production and the revised London production, and exactly what changes were made:
After Heathers closed Off-Broadway, the show was quickly made available for licensing in the US (and some other territories). Shortly after this, a new version of the show, called Heathers 101, was created as a 'high school edition'. This featured new dialogue, new teenage-voice-friendly keys for some songs, new lyrics (all those lyric changes you hear on the Riverdale version and blame those guys for? They're written by the same people as the lyrics you know and love, so don't be so quick to throw shade), and a new song to replace 'Blue', called 'You're Welcome' - a song more serious in tone than 'Blue, and in which we see the full journey of that scene play out, from Veronica finding herself alone with the two jocks, to their growing attempts at date-raping her, and finishing with Veronica resorting to defence to get herself out of the situation (a plot point which existed before, but was brushed over much more quickly in favour of playing up the comedy of the song). It wasn't long before the writers, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, decided they preferred 'You're Welcome' to 'Blue'. They acknowledged that 'Blue' was a funny, catchy song, which perfectly encapsulated the 'boys will be boys' mentality that Kurt and Ram have, but that it was basically nothing more than a 'list song', meaning lyrically it served no purpose other than to list as many different puns about balls as it could, and make light of the genuine danger Veronica finds herself in in that scene. They ran out of time before the show opened in New York in 2014 to make the show, and that song specifically, exactly what they wanted it to be, and had to 'freeze' it as it was. So when 'You're Welcome' had been tried and tested with the school edition, they realised it was much closer to their idea of what the tone of the show should be than 'Blue' was, and made the decision to replace 'Blue' with 'You're Welcome' in the licensed script and score.
A little while after the New York run, the writers were approached by UK producer Paul Taylor-Mills, who had seen the 2014 Off-Broadway production and loved it, and he asked them if they would like to bring Heathers to the UK in a workshop format, to establish a UK presence for the show whilst fine-tuning things they might not have had time to polish the first time round. They took this offer up, and, alongside the show's original director Andy Fickman, brought Heathers to the UK for the first time in a semi-staged, scripts-in-hand presentation at The Other Palace Studio in May 2017, with no sets, lighting, or costumes, and a 3 piece band (for comparison, the full orchestration asks for 7 musicians). This ran for 5 performances, with public feedback heavily encouraged (including during the performance, via a mobile app called Slido), and rewrites made every single day, to try out new things - including 'You're Welcome' within the context of the full 'adult' show, with a live audience. The workshop was a huge success, and prompted the Off-West End premiere of Heathers a year later at The Other Palace's larger Theatre space. More changes and rewrites were made across the show, and a new song was added for Heather Duke called 'Never Shut Up Again', replacing 'Blue (Reprise)', and, of course, it's replacement, 'You're Welcome (Reprise)'. Shortly after opening, a suggestion was made by Andrew Lloyd Webber (owner of The Other Palace) to write an empowerment song for Veronica when she breaks up with JD in Act Two. The writers got to work, and finished the song just in time to be performed in the final week of performances at The Other Palace. The song was 'I Say No', and it was 'officially' put into the show when the production transferred to the West End thanks to it's record-breaking run at The Other Palace, but it was in fact performed at The Other Palace during the last week of the show's run there.
Just under a month after closing at The Other Palace, Heathers transferred to the West End, opening at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. After a week of 'unofficial' previews, during which even more rewrites and changes were made to the production, the show was finally presented to critics (they had not been invited to the previous runs due to their work-in-progress nature) and the show ran for a limited run of 12 weeks. A cast recording was made halfway through the West End run and was released a few months after the show closed, and a UK tour was announced. Although not officially announced, it appears some more subtle changes have been made to the show since the closure of the West End production in preparation for the UK tour, including revised choreography and orchestrations. However, as it currently stands, the 'definitive' version of Heathers: The Musical, as far as the show's writers and creative team are concerned, is the version reflected on the West End cast album, and that is the version of the show that will soon be licensed to amateur and professional companies across the world for performance.
Source: myself, a London theatregoer who loved the 2014 Off-Broadway cast album, saw one of the 2017 workshop performances live, before seeing the Off-West End run twice and the West End run 18 times (yeah oops), being lucky enough to meet the writers and creative team a number of times at each of these runs and chat to them about the show, it's journey, and the changes made, as well as following their careers and work since via social media.

As far as I know lots of the original creatives were involved in the show, and Blue wasn‘t replaced by I Say No, but by You‘re Welcome which is a much scarier version of Blue with some of the original lyrics from Blue included and as someone who has seen it performed I can say it‘s very effective, maybe as much/even more? as Blue😊

You mentioned the ‘brain tumor for breakfast’ line? Kim Walker, the actress who played Heather Chandler in the movie died in the late 90’s of a brain aneurysm. Also tragically, Jeremy Applegate, who played the nerd character Peter Dawson (he had the monologue at Heather C’s funeral about how he hopes suicide doesn’t happen to him. Jeremy Applegate committed suicide on March 23rd, 2000. Kind of weird instances of art imitating dialogue from the movie I thought you guys might enjoy.

That is also why I love the musical version more. JD smiles in the musical, but around after rams death and especially meant to be yours, the smile has fangs. The smile has the bones of students between it’s teeth. JD in the movie smiles the whole movie and acts deranged throughout. Musical JD crescendos insanity. The part in meant to be yours where the chorus of students comes in is where it gives chills and you start to think: “wait… this isn’t what I thought it was” and you almost feel with Veronica and I think it’s wonderful. And the line “still I will if I must” shows that he has a goal and Veronica was just used as a pawn. Idk if I’m misinterpreting anything here. I’m 12.

Blue was replaced by You're Welcome is still about date rape but it adds more depth to the scene. I honestly think You're Welcome is closer to what would actually happen in highschool (as an almost highschool student) Sure they might use some of the vocabulary used in Blue but You're Welcome is honestly more accurate to what would go down at Highschool. Especially some of the things tha Kurt and Ram say, and (spoiler of lyrics ahead) when Veronica starts talking about what she learned in her self defense classes. I like both Blue and You're welcome dont get me wrong both are amazing.

10:00 to 15:00 (West End Heathers) You got a point with Blue being important, but what you got wrong was I say No Came as a song to furthen Veronicas Character She gave JD a Chance in Our love is god and Seventeen but now she says No. What actually replaced Blue was You're welcome, which keeps the youth language from Kurt and Ram and the controversity but mixes it with Veronicas Helplessness.
A subjectiv opinion: I feel like Blue drags a bit after the minute 2.

west end heathers was incredible, yes orchestrations differed but honestly i cannot choose a favorite production. i felt incredibly lucky to be there. I Say No is Veronica’s break-up song with JD. She finally realizes that he is going down a road that she cannot save him from and their relationship needs to end. It’s crucial to Carrie Hope Fletcher’s version of Veronica, who is a little bit feistier and strong-willed than Barrett Wilbert Weed’s Veronica, in my opinion. Both are AMAZING takes on the character but I Say No is super important to the west end version of Veronica

  • @juliasings6131
    @juliasings6131 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Side note: blue was replaced with you're welcome, which was also more empowering for Veronica but still sung by Kurt and ram
I have no real opinion because I like you're welcome better but (and I guess I'd be a hypocrite not to count this as more important so I guess I'm against removing it) blue fits better there
I say no was a separately added song (which, musically, I absolutely love, but I won't go into that rn unless anyone wants me to)
They also added a song for Heather duke which, just as a concept, I hate for so many reasons (which I also won't go into unless someone wants me to)

Someone already said it deeper in the comments but ‘blue’ was actually replaced by ‘you’re welcome’ which is similar to ‘blue’ but it puts a slightly more realistic look on it, making it a little heavier than blue. ‘I say no’ tho was Veronica cutting ties from JD and describing what it’s like being with him and realizing he’s making all these promises ab changing but he’s never going to actually fulfill them

13:31 Ryan I just thought that you should know that I watched the US slime tutorial first a couple years back and I loved it. I fell in love with it. After having watched it again early this year, I fell in love with it and musical theatre again and from there I found the UK version. I love both depictions of the show and I just connected with it so much but I didn’t really understand why at first but I am in love with both versions of the musical and if anything I would love to see them combined with all of the songs. For example I would have loved to see Blue in the UK version, then see Kurt and Ram perform Youre Welcome after that to show how quickly the tables have turned. But yeah, just though you should know that I wouldn’t change anything of either versions I have seen, I would love to see a combined show of all of the songs.

12:02 I know loads of people have already said this but Blue was replaced with Your Welcome which in my opinion was even better than blue. Your Welcome has its comedic lines yet it’s a lot darker and in a minor key too which, in my opinion, sets the tone a lot better and adds an intensity to the scene.
I used to be a die hard fan of Heathers and I watched the west end production and didn’t enjoy it as much as the off-Broadway Heathers because the costumes and extra songs just didn’t fit the vibe of the original.

I think it's funny how the one small incorrect detail of I Say No *replacing* Blue managed to basically invalidate a lot of their points here. Whatever their opinions on I Say No are, a lot of what they said about it seemed to be dismissing it because the tone was completely wrong to replace Blue which is definitely correct. The irony, of course, is that the actual song to replace Blue is far far darker (whether you think that's good or not)
