I was 11 years old and was hanging out on my grandmothers balcony in Havana, Cuba in 1958 and one of these came slowly up the street. It would stop and let the roof down and then put it up again. Then drive slowly up a little farther and do it all again. I was fascinated and peoplewould stop and watch. Now that was a great way to promote a new car !!!
I remember seeing one of these back in 1958 when I was about 9 years old, It was recently bought and he was proudly showing it to the people my parents were visiting He demonstrated how the top was retracted and it amazed everyone.. I imagine it was a quite expensive option.

You can see in the video how the rear seatback is nearly vertical--the huge trunk space to fit the retractable top made for a tiny rear seat! Of course, behind that seat is a group of control solenoids for each phase of top movement. Back in the day, I owned two of these cars--one to drive, and one for parts. If you wanted to operate the mechanism, you were well advised to park on level ground.

The ‘57 - ‘59 retracts were great marketing tools for Ford. Fifties cars were some of the most beautiful cars in history. And Ford built some of the best.
As a kid I always thought this was awesome! As an adult. I still think it's awesome! And I'm a Chevy man. These were the first Tramsformers! But not no kids toy! A MAN'S TOY! It just happen to be one sharp car to boot! I think it would be cool if the hood was motorized too. But open both ways. Depending on which end of the motor you need to work on. 😁

I know very few people qualified and experienced enough to make these old droptops work correctly, even on the Lincoln versions...Even more rare is the guy who can do that AND find the parts needed...I worked with once such man in Houston, and he's still in business to my knowledge...

That’s a beautiful car. I knew a guy who had the same car as an inheritance. Needless to say it was all original and needed tons of TLC. The system for the hard top was a bit overwhelming to look at. Nice job on the car. 👍
My uncle did a frame off restoration on one, but a Mercury Turnpike cruiser, retractable hardtop black with gold, stunning car, just one of many he has done. His cars are beyond sick. Most ended up in Harrah's collection

Actually Packard had power windows in the late 30s in there limousines but we're hydraulic operated by a electric motor and pump then wired to the switches for the passengers in the doors or could be operated by the choffer driver who was separated from the riders because it was a coach built car . I worked on one at a shop that specialized in classic cars of all kinds and also worked on one of these here retractable cars as well . You would be surprised at how many so called new gadgets or improvements on today's cars were designed and used years and years ago on much older high end cars !
Power windows goes back to the 1940s with Cadillac. It's not a new invention. Although it was a feature for luxury cars, that's why most brands didn't have them until recently.

Actually no. This car was an incredible flop. Performing the drop top function required eight separate motors. It was complex, subject to jam and left the car completely inoperable.
Imagine the frustrating work to get all this lined up and working like clockwork. Also imagine the frustrating work needed to repair when it all goes awry.
The Ford factory service bulletins still exist for these. You need to follow those as your mechanic's bible in order to maintain one of these beauties. Several motors and solenoids involved along with intricate wiring.
My dad worked on these at the local Ford Dealer in the late 1950's. He said they were quite reliable. We went to a car show recently and saw a restored example. There are modern electronic replacements for the solenoids. He was just amazed. Great video!
Nice! My grandfather was a body man for a ford dealership in the 50s thru the 70s. He said when these cars were hit in the rear hard enough, that entire assembly would be thrown out of wack. He said it was the biggest pain in the ass to get it all lined up to function and to ge the roof to seal correctly. What a beautiful car though!
This place always had the nicest cars. Almost bought a boss 302 from these guys. They have since shut down and new owners only sell "TRUCKS! TRUCKS! TRUCKS!"
They were expensive when new. $3163, most expensive big Ford in the lineup. A Sunliner convertible (soft top, conventional) was $2650. Probably an easy choice for most people who wanted a convertible. The Country Squire wagon was next most expensive at $2794 MSRP for the nine-passenger.
My dad drove one of these home from the dealership he worked at. That was in 1964 so it was used but, he couldn’t have driven a rocket ship home and us be more surprised! It was solid white with a red interior. Awesome car!
This top mechanism was an engineering creation well before its time! I read that the top electrics alone utilized over 600' of electrical wire driving 7 reversible electric motors!

i’m almost 60 years old and i graduated HighSchoolin 1982 inHollywood Florida we had a older female PhysicalEducation Teacher that had a Thunderbird retractable roof she bought new and after school she would demonstrate the top opening and closing in a open area by the Schools Swimming Pool area i never missed a opportunity to watch it because as a young man i thought it was an amazing thing to watch ! it’s funny because after Graduation i dated a ComWorker who’s father was hoarding old Thunderbirds to restore later on he got the Cars i into running and driving condition but at that time left them Cosmetically in the shape he purchased them in my girlfreind had been loaned one of his TBird convertibles to use as her daily driver that had the Swing Away steering Colomn and non working AirConditioning so any time she drove the Car she put the top down one day after work we were driving in the same direction on the same road and i went past her and all i could think was WOW she looked soHot driving that Classic with her long Hair blowing in the Wind ! eventually we both got to our final destination and met up for dinner she was complaining about the hot weather and that she was sweating from all the Florida Sunshine and Heat i laughed because i too had a Convertible without AirConditioning and i didn’t think it was too bad out plus no matter what i always thought she looked great ! and 40 years later she still does her Dad dad restore those Cars and sold off most of them when the market was really in his Favour
My dad and I bought a 58 skyliner for $25 in 1967. The engine lifters were banging like crazy. The cylinders used to move the top would only spit hydraulic fluid into the trunk and wouldn't move anything. At that time the car was junk. I removed the Holley carburetor and the intake manifold and then we junked it.

More beautiful than the 57/58 Plymouth Fury aka Christine. They just don't make cars this beautiful anymore. They took pride in their cars back then. It was almost like artwork. This car must be a pleasure to drive.
My dad had one of these as his 1st car. He bought it in 1966 when he was 16. He had it until about 1987...when it was sold for parts. (Rusted away) The roof was complicated but not too hard to figure out if you were a doer and not a payer/complainer. He would love to buy another to spend his golden years in, but the prices are beyond his reach.
Some of the sharpest vehicles were produced in the 50s and 60s extremely well trimmed with stainless mouldings 2 tones of paints was a great time to be alive and you could own one of these beauties for like 3 grand or less most were in the 2 grand range lol
1st time I ever went over 100mph was in a 58 Skyliner convertible with the top down. Young neighbor guy in Utah had one (1962) and gave me a lift. I was 12 and remember sitting behind him looking at the speedometer hit 100. If my dad had known there would have been a problem. ;-)

My grandpa had one tucked away in his barn. I can remember walking in, and seeing a pile of scrap metal basically. Parts laying all around. Puled up on Top of the car frame. He has it ready to hit the road almost now! Quite the sight to behold. Its bigger than the average family car. Lol ITS A FREAKING BOAT!!!!
It goes to show how inavative Ford has been all along. Despite the ragging and insults I have always been a Ford fan and so was my Dad. God rest his soul.
@@Stale_Mahoney - Yes they (Peugeot) did make the first electrical, retractable hardtop, but it was not completely electrical. You still needed to get out of the car and manually turn the hold down latches for the storage area. The Ford top was completely electrical and the entire opening/closing sequence could be done from inside the car.
Incredible car! And to think they did this with the hardtop model as well as the ragtop!? 1950s cars and trucks rule as #1 and always will for so many reasons.....
The rectangular place in the middle of the trunk was where you could put things and ensure they didn't get crushed. One of my older sibs had one of these. At family picnics we would all stand in the drive way and watch the show. That was in the early 60's..... The car had to be running or you'd kill the battery!
My father owned one in the fifties he went to California in 1958 and scored a Job at Parker Aircraft. Once in awhile he would talk about that car. I can see why, I bet when he drove back to Kansas to se friends and family they about flipped as no one had these. Ive come across older gentlemen that remember him and many of them went to Cali after watching Dad and one of his classmates. Dad got drafted and it took his Life's savings to support his new wife my mother when they made it back to Cali the Hippie movement was starting and the Starliner was long gone. They moved back to Kansas and he died on the Family Farm a long way from the tall palms and beaches of California. He did a lot more in life then I have done, man you really miss these guys when their gone.
Just bought a BMW Z4 that does the same thing. I remember when this Ford came out and was advertised on television. Incredible piece of engineering for that time.
"Trouble free for the most part" Hardly! A number of these cars were repurchased from customers. They had repeatedly left them stranded with the top half in or half out of the trunk. This coming on the heals of the Edsel. The model was quietly discontinued.
My grandfather used to have the Ford skyliner 1958 like this one, but it was red with white rooftop, I never saw the car was born years later but I saw the pictures of the car and my mom described how basically everyone was in awe of the car and how big and beautiful it was, with also obviously the retractable rooftop, what a machine
I had a '59 Tbird, same retractabke top, but cloth on mine. We got mine working, but there are a ton of relays, micro switches, etc. ... They were way ahead of their time! Wish I still had my Tbird...only 500 made of that model.
While your T-Bird had a retractable soft top, it was not anywhere near as complex as the retractable hardtop, which was only offered on the Fairlane and one year for Lincoln.
There's a guy in Salem Oregon with one of these and he pulls around a totally restored matching "finned" 1958 fiberglass ski boat to local car shows. VERY eye-catching!

And just 3 years after this, the elegant 61 Lincoln Continental arrives! Four years later, the 65 Mustang. Ford was on a roll!

I almost used a 1967 GTO as a down payment on one of these when I was in the Army, many years ago. They're still my favorite car of all time.

Some of the sharpest vehicles were produced in the 50s and 60s extremely well trimmed with stainless mouldings 2 tones of paints was a great time to be alive and you could own one of these beauties for like 3 grand or less most were in the 2 grand range lol

1st time I ever went over 100mph was in a 58 Skyliner convertible with the top down. Young neighbor guy in Utah had one (1962) and gave me a lift. I was 12 and remember sitting behind him looking at the speedometer hit 100. If my dad had known there would have been a problem. ;-)

My grandpa had one tucked away in his barn. I can remember walking in, and seeing a pile of scrap metal basically. Parts laying all around. Puled up on Top of the car frame. He has it ready to hit the road almost now! Quite the sight to behold. Its bigger than the average family car. Lol ITS A FREAKING BOAT!!!!

@@Stale_Mahoney - Yes they (Peugeot) did make the first electrical, retractable hardtop, but it was not completely electrical. You still needed to get out of the car and manually turn the hold down latches for the storage area. The Ford top was completely electrical and the entire opening/closing sequence could be done from inside the car.

The rectangular place in the middle of the trunk was where you could put things and ensure they didn't get crushed. One of my older sibs had one of these. At family picnics we would all stand in the drive way and watch the show. That was in the early 60's..... The car had to be running or you'd kill the battery!

My father owned one in the fifties he went to California in 1958 and scored a Job at Parker Aircraft. Once in awhile he would talk about that car. I can see why, I bet when he drove back to Kansas to se friends and family they about flipped as no one had these. Ive come across older gentlemen that remember him and many of them went to Cali after watching Dad and one of his classmates. Dad got drafted and it took his Life's savings to support his new wife my mother when they made it back to Cali the Hippie movement was starting and the Starliner was long gone. They moved back to Kansas and he died on the Family Farm a long way from the tall palms and beaches of California. He did a lot more in life then I have done, man you really miss these guys when their gone.

Just bought a BMW Z4 that does the same thing. I remember when this Ford came out and was advertised on television. Incredible piece of engineering for that time.

"Trouble free for the most part" Hardly! A number of these cars were repurchased from customers. They had repeatedly left them stranded with the top half in or half out of the trunk. This coming on the heals of the Edsel. The model was quietly discontinued.

My grandfather used to have the Ford skyliner 1958 like this one, but it was red with white rooftop, I never saw the car was born years later but I saw the pictures of the car and my mom described how basically everyone was in awe of the car and how big and beautiful it was, with also obviously the retractable rooftop, what a machine

I had a '59 Tbird, same retractabke top, but cloth on mine. We got mine working, but there are a ton of relays, micro switches, etc. ... They were way ahead of their time! Wish I still had my Tbird...only 500 made of that model.
While your T-Bird had a retractable soft top, it was not anywhere near as complex as the retractable hardtop, which was only offered on the Fairlane and one year for Lincoln.

There's a guy in Salem Oregon with one of these and he pulls around a totally restored matching "finned" 1958 fiberglass ski boat to local car shows. VERY eye-catching!
