I saw the documentary about the vehicle and the stunt driver who drove it actually had it over 100mph. He said that’s the fastest he’s ever done for a movie and he is one of the most prominent stunt drivers in Hollywood who Nolan chose for the film. Pretty awesome rig 😎🤘🏻
Absolutely love this thing! Easily my favourite Batmobile. Looks like someone decided to modify an F-117 into a road car. Also love the fact the cars were fully functional and designed to do whatever they needed to do on set. Phenomenal piece of engineering!
Nolan was like: "we gotta make this realistic, so...we are going to build a full-on working black...TANK, that can, as well, jump over rooftops" Gotta admire his movies man, and the dedication, planning and realization that goes into making every shot meaningful and believable.
Its really cool they went to the effort they did to make this car... Making things for real instead of just using CGI is appreciated in itself, and when they overdo it and do go all the way...making every last detail in such a way that isn't exactly needed or seen by the audience, its even better because its authentic And I would definitely argue that's the case with this, plenty of things about this car most likely wasn't 'needed' for the film and to look realistic, but they did it anyway because they wanted a real vehicle. Such as the real flames from the air balloon burner, instead of CGI, the exhausts on top...everything really Its these sort of things that give hope for film production.
You're so right... Nolan said himself during an interview that he avoided CGI as much as possible to make things more real. By the way I recently made a Tumbler from cardboard on my channel, actually it's a DIY, don'ts hesitate to have a look! It may interest you :)

The wife actually was at the one garage where a tumbler was crashed into a false front. so glad I got to see this and have those memories.

One thing I've always been impressed with in Batman movies is the car, they've always gotten it right, even in the Schumacher era. This one is my favorite so far, it's simply the meanest one.

The look is unique and pleasing to the eyes so styling is gonna be a 9 out of 10 It uses a chevy crate motor, but doesn't have enough power to really propel the vehicle with any huge amount of force. Acceleration is a 3 out of 10 Have independent rear E-brakes adds a level of fun to sliding the vehicle around but it's only usable on wet roads. Other than that it handles more like a tank. Handling 3 out of 10 Driving it is a fun and unique experience and it's a real head turner so even though it's not high performance the fun factor is high with a 8 out of 10 Who doesn't want to drive the batmobile? It's easy to see why the cool factor is 10 out of 10 All these things added together give this vehicle a total weekend score of 33 out of 50 The interior is very bland with virtually no quality of life additions. Features is going to be a 1 out of 10 The race seats aren't very comfortable for long hauls or even short hauls and have no adjustment. Comfort is a 1 out of 10 The overall build quality leaves nothing to be desired and is quite solid, it won't be leaving you stranded giving it a quality score of 8 out of 10 Not very practical with only 2 seats and no doors or storage space. 1 out of 10 At an estimated build cost of somewhere around 750k dollars, the price to feature ratio is the absolute worst of any car ever and receives a 1 out of 10 The total daily score is 12 out of 50. Added up and the totally legit DougScore is 45 out of 100.

Looks like LAPD was using some unmarked units to clear the streets. Jay usually just drives with traffic but I imagine the producers and Warner Bros didn't want to liability of people driving into phone poles looking at the Batmobile. You can see one black Crown Vic at 9:25. The red and blue windshield lights of a trailing unit are just barely visible at 11:28. I suspect the "traffic" seen is a couple of shots were really studio cars. The editors did a good job of making it look like LA streets just magically had no traffic that day.
Looks coolest from the back or rear quarter. I have a hard time visualizing R&B jumping in and out of that thing in any kind of a hurry. The thing reminds me of driving around in an U.S. Army M113 APC.

the v drive noise would be intolerable for me actually driving it. its so damn loud. the engine noise is great of course since its a Chevy small block though. they could probably fix the v drive noise with a custom rear axle+transmission combo or something like that if you had the money to throw around to actually buy something like this.

This vehicle is still very much a prop. If you had the time, money, and expertise, you could replace a lot of the special FX gear with a muffler, exhaust pipe leading to the burner in the rear, maybe even a turbo to help the engine breath. That would decrease the noise.
Also seeing the cop behind you. Was it a CHP. I can just imagine him calling that in on the radio that he's pulling over the Batmobile. And when he walked up and you open up the canopy to see Jay Leno. LOL

Pretty sure he meant the vehicle's design looked practical for military purposes. So pretty much, it looked like something you could see in real life. It's really not that hard to figure out what he meant.
According to another vid, Jay drives one car a day for at least 1/2 HR or takes it home. He does not drive everything in the collection through, there are maybe a dozen cars at the ready at all times and different cars cycle in and out of the mix. Also, behind the facility where Jay has the garage is a movie car building company. Have a look for the company Vehicle Effects .
I live in Burbank and have seen Jay driving around several times - never the same car. If you see some funky old car driving down the street here, it's a good chance it's him.

Chevy engines are often built from the ground up, this is a ZZ3 crate engine from GM though so it does use certain off the shelf Gm parts.

It uses a chevy crate motor, but doesn't have enough power to really propel the vehicle with any huge amount of force. Acceleration is a 3 out of 10
Have independent rear E-brakes adds a level of fun to sliding the vehicle around but it's only usable on wet roads. Other than that it handles more like a tank. Handling 3 out of 10
Driving it is a fun and unique experience and it's a real head turner so even though it's not high performance the fun factor is high with a 8 out of 10
Who doesn't want to drive the batmobile? It's easy to see why the cool factor is 10 out of 10
All these things added together give this vehicle a total weekend score of 33 out of 50
The interior is very bland with virtually no quality of life additions. Features is going to be a 1 out of 10
The race seats aren't very comfortable for long hauls or even short hauls and have no adjustment. Comfort is a 1 out of 10
The overall build quality leaves nothing to be desired and is quite solid, it won't be leaving you stranded giving it a quality score of 8 out of 10

Looks like LAPD was using some unmarked units to clear the streets. Jay usually just drives with traffic but I imagine the producers and Warner Bros didn't want to liability of people driving into phone poles looking at the Batmobile. You can see one black Crown Vic at 9:25. The red and blue windshield lights of a trailing unit are just barely visible at 11:28. I suspect the "traffic" seen is a couple of shots were really studio cars. The editors did a good job of making it look like LA streets just magically had no traffic that day.

the v drive noise would be intolerable for me actually driving it. its so damn loud. the engine noise is great of course since its a Chevy small block though. they could probably fix the v drive noise with a custom rear axle+transmission combo or something like that if you had the money to throw around to actually buy something like this.

This vehicle is still very much a prop. If you had the time, money, and expertise, you could replace a lot of the special FX gear with a muffler, exhaust pipe leading to the burner in the rear, maybe even a turbo to help the engine breath. That would decrease the noise.
the noise isnt coming from the engine, its the drive train and transmission gear box which makes that noise. the engine isnt all that loud.

According to another vid, Jay drives one car a day for at least 1/2 HR or takes it home. He does not drive everything in the collection through, there are maybe a dozen cars at the ready at all times and different cars cycle in and out of the mix. Also, behind the facility where Jay has the garage is a movie car building company. Have a look for the company Vehicle Effects .
