- Back again this month, Eljay is here with his longest review yet. While this year didn't contain the most combiners, it sure felt like it. Included within the review is the second to last combo model "set." Dive into the final flashback year and enjoy the combiner models of BIONICLE 2005!

Just to clarify something, I can not verify the 100% accuracy of the part counts for the combo models in this video. The majority of them were counted by hand and as such are prone to mistakes. So if they are off by a few, I apologize, but I did the best I could without official numbers! Thank you! -Eljay

The Zivon isn't actually the last "Nui" combiner; that honor goes to 2010's Gaardus.
You also gotta love how Eljay kinda indicates if he likes the set or not when declaring the canonicity with his tone of voice.
I just wanted to see the Zivon, I didn't want an existential crisis!

seeing the zivon in motion was something else, man. for years this was just a legendary, impossibly massive rahi model that i had only seen in reference books. but seeing it move, seeing it come to life like that? just wonderful, dude.

for Voporak, I kinda imagine the arm with nothing to be like an old wound, like his hand was cut off, or the arm is shriveled up and emaciated, so he keeps it close to his body, kinda like hulk post gauntlet in endgame

Because when the Lighted One shows up ANYWHERE, he glows so bright people commit suicide rather then stare in his direction. It took an entire army to kill him, not because he's a skilled warrior, but because he is so bright that many in that army accidentally killed each other cause they were all attacking one target and couldn't tell where they were swinging because of his brightness. Eventually the mighty Lighted One, brother the the Shadowed One, fell in battle. They say his body was sealed away in a tomb some where in the Southern Islands and at night his tomb glows bright from the distant island, but no one visits as they know who lays there.

I have never heard of this before. It makes perfect sense.
I haven’t tried it on Bionicle pieces, but maybe Pledge floor polish could work too? Works well enough on Transformers.

Now this just reminds me of Transmetal 2 Megatron from beast wars. The dinosaur motif, and the 2 propeller like thrusters.
Actually the Venom Flyer's pincers on the sides are its wings lol, and the 2 long socket joints are its legs. If you pull the boggarak/roporak pincers out to the sides and look it from above, you got the general bird shape what they were going for, but it's still awkward.
It looks like you could probably stack the two towers from the Battle for Metru Nui alternate build, but they displayed them separately to make it a better picture.
There was a sertin praka combio set that you could get as a stand alone figure set.
He was feared by all sixs of the praka team and had golden head piece that came with that set.
He is the one they all feared. Him and one another.

As you said, the stand-outs of the year are the Titan combos. These will always hold a special place in my heart and I will one day hold all three together. Very much enjoyed the video.

Ah, 2005. I'm not looking forward to when I have to track down 4 of every set for the combiners. Luckily, I managed to snag a spare Battle of Metru Nui and Tower of Toa for dirt cheap each - if only Lego released instructions for the alternate models...
Can't wait to see you look at those 2-Piraka abominations next time, those things give the Slizer combos a solid run for their money.
To be fair, _technically_ "Tower of Toa" is Canon, seeing as there was an actual scene in one of the books where the Toa Hordika did a thing where they attacked and took a tower from the Visorak, then turned it into a fallback point of their own or something, but idk how much that actually helps, in the end.
Wait that’s supposed to be Sentrak’s head? Wow. Since every picture of him Lego ever released was from the straight front I always assumed the bohrok dome piece was supposed to be his head didn’t realize he was supposed to be a hunchback.
I didn't know that much about the shadowed one when I built this set a long time ago, but for me what you call a tail was a third leg. So I perceived this beast was a tripod, which was epic for me. ^^

I remember building Zivon like it was yesterday, all 6 Visorak freshly bought from Walmart and Target as a late birthday present. I built all 6 on their own, then tried the different combiners, then finally Zivon itself. Even with all of the parts in their prime, Zivon never really stood very well for me. That being said, watching all of these reviews is taking me down a nice trip down memory lane. I miss having all of my Bionicle pieces, I wish I made the decision to keep them.
The good thing about these combo models is that you can modify them to your taste. If i had voporak, I'd remove or alter some parts, for him to look better
Eljay having serious-toned conversation about entropy was out of left field, but I enjoyed it.

My head canon is that the dark hunters are basically a family business founded by TSO and he hired his immediate family members Roodaka, Lariska, and Voporak as his main help in his organization as they’re all vortixx or at least look like it.
I find it a little weird that the Shadowed One has the chest design he does. It's a little too reminiscent of Roodaka's, if you catch my drift.
If you don't catch my drift, he's got Rahkshi heads that look like either the largest pectorals ever or... well, you know.
If you don't know, I mean boobs. The man has Rahkshi head boobs.
Maccaebus The foot piece that’s in between helps get rid of that idea since it comes across more as pecs compared to Roodaka to me.

The parakrekks looks straight up like a fallout Mirelurk. It’s how I justify the “amphibian” thing even tho mirelurks are mutated crustaceans
After your glowing review of the Voporahk, I'm honestly tempted to buy duplicates of Roodaka, Keetongu, and Sidorak so I can have that thing as a permanent build on my shelf. (Also, I kinda like the idea of the one arm that just ends in a ball joint being like, a stump wound or something. Even though it's a monster that bends time around itself, it's still mortal in one way.) Also, I feel like it would be interesting to attempt to make a combo model of all the 2005 System sets, or at least expand Battle Of Metru Nui using pieces from the other three.
I highly recommend every Titan Combiner from 2005, especially Voporak. His legs especially are so bulky and well built!
I think the big problem with your joints is you don't take them apart. I leave my sets open for no more than a few months, then pack them away back in the can/box for anywhere from 8 months to a few years. What you say is true; Lego pieces are temporary. But having them built and stressed for 15 years will greatly lower their lifespan. Letting them rest in a sealed package and not letting them oxidize can help the parts function for much longer.
Also, Shadowed One has 3 legs. It's not a tail.
I do miss that the Nui combiners it did get annoying that pieces became so big as the sets went down the line that there was just no cohesive way to put them together anymore. I remember getting all 6 of the Piraka and just sitting there like "I want to try to put all 6 together, but just looking at all the mass in these sets I know I wont be able to" and that became more apparent as time went on. Then the Stars happened lol
It's an almost poetic irony that bionicle will in time fail to its own plastic parts when from the beginning it's story was in a time before time.
This was overdue. I love this still.

When he says "CGI material" what exactly does he mean? Are there actually CGI videos of a bunch of different characters or something? Or does he mean the still images on boxes and manuals?

I really like the idea of more variations of visorak, bigger or different in other ways, to flesh out the horde, but I'm not really a fan of how these combinations look. x)
I like the titan combos though.

I low key want now to get two battle of metru-nui sets and rebuild one of them into alternate model and try to combine both.
Also, I love the variety in alternate system models. So many possibilities. So many gateways to imagination.

Yup, I got Voporak as a gift in 2005, it had instructions for the combo model as well as each set independently. I never built the combo build but this and the Shadowed One look very impressive. I never knew TSO had a tail, I legitimately thought it had a third leg, having always seen it positioned down and flat.
I haven't said it on all of these but thank you for pursuing this combo model series. One year is alot to endure and I appreciate them being a month apart to allow enough time and energy to make each their best. And each video is beefy for the month so it works wellbeing that far apart. :)

Personally, the Toa Hordika's design of having one arm being longer than the other actually lean more towards a pro because I think it exaggerates the half Toa /half rahi form. Although I completely agree that the torsos are far too gappy. (Side note: cause I'm picses and blue is my favorite color, I prefer the water characters, both good and evil)

2004 wasn’t the last year to feature a unique piece in a combo model set. 2006 Irnaak (I think) one of the piraka combos had a unique gold colored Thok headpiece
Regarding the Frostelus, while you built it like it's posed in the instructions, it seems like it is meant to be quadrupedal, with the Nuju weapon legs being hind legs. Still probably would feel disappointing, but I can't build it at the moment.
There are a lot of really great combos in 2005, but I do like 2004 a bit more overall and 2005 also had the Ice Vermin and most of the Vizorak combos which were pretty sub-par at best. Big fan of the cable crawler, Sea Spider Protocairn and the titan combos all being prominent characters is always a good thing. Overall, I still think this year is better than 2003 on average, but the worst of this year is definitely worse than the overabundance of non-cannon crap in that year
Something I’ve always liked doing was building the combo models with the wrong sets. Could get better color combos sometimes

My favourites would be Sentrakh (he has just a perfect menacing appearance for me) and Voporak (he was my first set and the reason I got into Bionicle). Those extended arms with 2 "elbows" I think fit him so well in relation with the story and how he was mutated by the Brotherhood of Makuta to serve them...
I forgot how great the colour schemes of the visorak were
it is honestly kind of a shame i didn't know about the rock raptor combo while i had the two base toa while they were intact with all their pieces in the past, but alas, im left with a burden of rebuilding as many models as i can with what i've got
This takes me back to Web of Shadows...and how much I hate the Hordika. The design looks terrible, they were un-fun to play with and build. Overall, worst year for Bionicle IMO. The Visorak were okay.
I have never seen parts get so loose. That being said, it's yet another reason I will never agree with people saying when I find an old set still in the box/canister to just leave it in there. Those are new, unused parts that will be good for years to come. They are worth so much more to me out of the box and either assembled or in a moc that won't have the join issues for possibly another two decades than sitting in a box.

Parakrekks definitely looks like it hs a big presence and an imposing stature. It looks like a Toa-Visorak cross-over.
