‘Australia is our only ally’: NZ Prime Minister on his ‘number one strategic priority’

  • New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says Australia is his country’s “number one strategic priority” and its key relationship because “Australia is our only ally”.
Mr Luxon has previously said his number one priority is his relationship with Australia.
“My job is to work with all leaders across all countries, but no doubt about it, Australia is our number one strategic priority, and it’s our key relationship because Australia is our only ally,” Mr Luxon told Sky News host Erin Molan.
“I have a great relationship with Anthony Albanese - he’s someone I actually knew in my former life when he was a Minister in Australia, and I was CEO of Air New Zealand.
“Our job is to get on and actually work together because there’s so much that we have in common, and we are like-minded countries with values that we stand up for and we need to represent in our regions.
“So, it’s in both of our interests that we have a strong relationship there.”

Bonus questions would be (a) how much money his party received from the tobacco lobby and (b) if it is true that maintaining the tax revenue from tobacco sales is key to helping to finance his tax cuts for the land lord class.

not really. Any time a minister of his says or does something controversial or stupid he give a sidestepping response of inaction.
And some of the stupid crap they have done since they got in:
The Associate Health Minister [Casey Costello] (who is responsible for policies of tobacco smoking) wants to freeze excise tax on tobacco products, impose massive fines for selling vaping products to minors of $30,000 (the fines for cigarettes are tiny in comparison), and decriminalize oral nicotine products (all stuff that big tobacco companies want done).
This minister was also part of and a founder of a far right lobby Group called Hobsons pledge which has known links tot he Tobacco industry.
Hobsons pledge (which this minister founded) also wants to abolish things like the 'Treaty of Waitangi' one of the countries founding documents, which being sworn in as a minister they are obligated to uphold... Knowing these they shouldn't have been allowed to be sworn in as they clearly did so in bad faith. not to mention the number of conflicts of interest....

The greatest resistance to this would be from the right wing money interests /establishment who would see that they probably couldn’t get away with all the perversions of the economy which work in their interest and against the general populace. And sadly the general populace think with their hearts and not their heads when it comes to whether or not to become part of Australia. The little guy in Australia gets a far fairer shake of the alleys than the little guy in NZ. I recall writing an essay about this in high school and because I enjoyed geography have retained an interest in the subject over the years and as a successful and effective union delegate with the interests of the little guy at heart I have seen little to alter the conclusion I made as a high school student, NZ would be far better off as part of Australia. After only 5 months in power Luxon`s popularity has gone down fast ! Mainly due to reversing popular policies of the previous government, along with 1000s of job cuts which have increased unemployment, & new laws favouring greedy landlords : (
Last time Luxons party were in power one USA resident owned 200 Auckland rental properties, & one Chinese resident owned 150. Ardern`s government helped young home buyers by blocking foreigners from buying rentals here, & had popular policies to restrict tobacco use.
Luxons new pay rise for politicians means he will get an extra $50,000 a year, bringing his yearly pay to $520,000. He owns 7 properties, which made him $4 million last year alone,
On top of that Luxon has found a spare $3 billion in the public purse & is already giving it All to landlords ! LOL : )
After only 5 months in power, Luxons government is now 6 points behind the opposition in the latest poll - the worst result ever for a new NZ government ! !
