Most all these type of incidence have a hydraulic jack plate involved. One solid connection (the piston bolt) and 2 slide tubes. That leash will do nothing when the jack plate separates and the leash is attached to the engine mounting plate.

Its a gimmick. The only way it works is if the leash is tethered to the boat.

I remember back in the day my dad used to put a chain attached like that dude did with Rope.. Old schoolers been doing that for years. Surprised it not a common feature on these newer faster boats.

From experience, I have seen it stop 3 with the hyd jack plate remaining attached to the boat and preventing the motor from landing on the back deck/cockpit area. The leash dampens the initial upward momentum plus leverage from strike/kick-up. Without stopping that momentum and leverage, it will be a different story. Newtons Laws. Hope it makes sense. Again, from experience, I have seen it prevent motors from landing in the cockpit. I am sure people will post videos soon how it saved their life. I think about and care who’s riding with me too. At least I know I did everything I could in case it did fail. To each their own. 👊

I find a lot of people don’t really inspect their boats enough. I go through every year and recheck torque on every jack plate bolt and steering linkage nuts found a few loose a few times. Use to have to do the same thing on the race cars. People don’t realize it but outboards and the accessories that mount them take a beating and are exposed to a great amount of stress. I’ve even found brand new boats with loose bolts/nuts. Indicator lines going from the head of the bolt to the mounting surface are a good way to tell if your nuts and bolts are backing off.

What engine manufacture was it.... Because in side the trim cylinders is a blow off valve that will allow the engine to come up if it hit an object... If the valve doesn't not work the transom or engine bracket will fail.

For the amount of $$$ that is spent on electronics and other equipment on those boats that can easily go over $20,000, I am sure spending $300 or so isn't going to break their bank. They may just have to hold off on that "must have " upgrade to a much bigger fish finder screen or something. This boat, in this one, had power poles that easily cost $5k. Just think what the rest cost. Easily a close to $100,000 rig.

Actually, more common at lower speeds (40-50 mph)
Running faster the motor just bounces and breaks off the lower unit. This same thing happened on Pickwick a week or two before this incident. Driver was doing 40 mph and hit a cypress Stump. Luckily there were no injuries, just a destroyed boat.

Maybe they should enforce the speed limits on the water ways and people should learn to not drive like idiots. From what I remember there's different speed limit with in so many feet of the shoreline also How fast would you have to going to flip a motor weighing that much back into the vessel. I love the idea is to strap motar to back of boat and hold on. Dumbest idea ever when has this ever been a problem. I've seen. Transoms ripped off and lower unites destroyed but what the F. Should add a roll bar, 5 point harness and wear a helmet and fudge who or what ever you hit who cares right I need to get somewhere now. I'm late I'm late for a very important date Alice

You can knock a motor off running 30 if your boat isn’t maintained and rate of speed is not what put that motor in the boat. Think about it motor gets knocked off the hull stops or slows rapidly, if the driver didn’t put the boat in neutral the motor keeps going the lower unit hits the hull and the motor flips into the boat. The leash is only effective if the motor plate stays attached to hull or jackplate. If the motor plate gets ripped off as well your going to have an outboard flip into your boat with a leash on it. A more effective device would be a kill switch tether with a little extra slack running to the motor. Similar to a life jacket kill switch in case the drive flys out of the boat. If your motor gets knocked off at least it will get shut off before you get chopped up.

I was fishing a tournament on lake Granberry in Texas in 2002 and the boat in front of us at full speed had the bolts brake that held the engine to the boat and the engine came in the boat and left prop cuts on the back deck right behind the driver and passenger before throwing both fisherman out of the boat into the lake. They were very luck the prop never hit them but I can see the leash would not have helped in that case with the place the leash is attached.

This is just another reason why I’ll never buy a bass boat. They’re dangerous. If you run at 40 or 50 miles per hour, instead of 90 like these things do, that’s not enough to flip the motor into the boat.

Once the motor is knocked off the hull slows if the driver can’t pop it into neutral fast enough this is what happens because the motor keeps going. You can knock a motor off running 30 depending on the size and weight of the boat, bigger boat= more inertia.
