Terry is a legend! We do the Terry Fox Run every year as a family. Did my first research project on him in grade 5 back in 1993. Of course, I’m Canadian so we know the legend well.
There was a show a few years back called "The Greatest Canadian"and Terry Fox came second. He lost to the guy who came up with universal healthcare. Dude is a saint here in Canada. There's numerous schools, places, streets, monuments dedicated to him. Look up his wiki article.
@@lazmaroulis6686 yes indeed, Douglas won. From what I remember, every candidate had an advocate. For Douglas it was George Stroumboulopoulos. For Terry Fox it was Sook-Yin Lee. It was 20 years ago, damn I'm old..
Terry Fox refused any corporate sponsorship, Including companies like McDonalds. He felt it would lessen his Marathon of Hope, which was about people helping people. To this day no corporate sponsors are allowed. The Terry Fox foundation has remained true to that core commitment and the wishes of Terry. ❤
I believe he accepted corporate donations but he wasn't willing to endorse companies or products and he wouldn't accept and conditional donations. Ford motors donated the van, and Imperial Oil supplied the fuel, Four Seasons hotels offered accommodations and pledged money.
@@Lon1001 Currently, Terry Fox Runs take place every year with many participants from all over the world. The Run is a volunteer led, all-inclusive, non-competitive event with no corporate sponsorship, incentives or fundraising minimums. Fox laid out these wishes before his death in 1981.
I grew up in the late 70's/early 80's in southern California and I remember watching coverage of Terry Fox. His story definitely still resonated outside of Canada.
Not long after moving to Canada from Ireland I was doing some work in the Terry fox high school and I had never heard of him. The staff quickly got me up to speed on him. Absolute legend of a man.
Terry Fox is loved by every Canadian for the values he had and that we can only strive for. If the world was as selfless as Terry, we would live in utopia. I feel like Rick Hansen sort of has been forgotten though, and the man circumnavigated the world in a wheelchair
I live near Buffalo, New York, super close to the Canadian border and I'm almost 50 years old and follow the news and current events and I can honestly say I've never heard of Terry Fox until now
@@daviddeppa122 hence why I said why I said "if you're Canadian". living close to Canada has nothing to do with it. there is a Terry fox day in Canada every year, people run to raise money for cancer and it's very popular in school. Every kid that goes to elementary school in Canada knows who Terry fox is, he's pretty much a national hero.
Everyone knows Terry Fox there’s a statue of him down the road from me in downtown St.John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador where he started his journey with 1 foot in the Atlantic Ocean.
Once you leave Canada, no one knows him. Glad to see someone with a big platform bringing more awareness to him though I felt the same way about Eddy Nolan as you do about Terry Fox
My son did the Terry Fox run 2 years ago in dedication of my dad, who passed the year prior to terminal brain cancer. Still chokes me up whenever I look at the name tag that says " I'm doing the Terry Fox run for Grandpa Lorne"
I'm 66 and remember Terry well,he was and is an inspiration, hero, everything good! My wife has cancer and is fighting for her life, she is like Terry, never said, why me
I’m American, but we lived in Canada from 1980 to 1982. I very clearly remember Terry Fox…I was 10 years old. Between Terry Fox, Rush and Hockey have wonderful memories of Canada. Cheers from New Mexico, USA.
Thank you for sharing. My mom is finishing her second fight against cancer, hopefully with a W in the next month. I never knew about this man, so I appreciate you sharing the story. Much love from Boston.
As a Canadian growing up with Terry Fox being a household name it never occurred to me that Terry Fox wasn't a household name everywhere. I remember Terry Fox Day probably the most out of my years in school. There's things from my time in school I remember but nothing like Terry Fox Day.
In a time before internet and Terry was a national name is a great honor. The fact that he has made a simple run into a huge event through out Canada is amazing. He is an inspiration to all, I pray this continues forever,
Thank you for sharing..I never heard that story..it is really great to see what humans can be capable of..in the end we all have that spark in us to use our time for good
Many school classes of students got to run along with Terry for a few metres.... Including a bunch of schools from Barrie and I was one of the students (being in my teens).... We also each got a chance to be up front with Terry for at least a few yards of running
He's an absolute legend. I lived in Thunder Bay just before he missed out on arriving there. I went to a middle school named after him. Never to be forgotten.
Off top, I'd say anyone doing Ninja Warrior/rock climbing. Mad respect for those athletes! Edit: American here, can say, sadly, I had never heard of Terry Fox. Amazing, amazing story, both for him and Ian Ward. Thank you very much for highlighting them.
I don't know why it never occurred to me that Terry Fox isn't someone the whole world knows, but man did it make me happy to see a TH-camr I follow covering this.
I think people see the goodwill Terry Fox created, and they experience the feelgood emotion that came from the inspiration he left, but I think many don't fully consider the shear athleticism of his journey - as I consider it more and more I think it makes him legitimately one of the best athletes of all time, few people will ever come close to his feat let alone those facing the physical adversity he had to overcome.
I forget how old I was when I saw him run. Despite what the media reports now, not many followed him in the beginning. Video of him with people always around him, but majority of the time he was alone and in pain, but determined. They should put him on Canadian currency.
Crazy I've never heard of Terry Fox as an American. One person who did succeed in crossing Canada by foot two years ago though was Dave Proctor, running over 4400 miles/7100km in only 67 and a half days.
What a legend..... You should talk about andrey smaev too !!!!!! Hes quite unknown he deserve way more recognizion. PROBABLY THE STRONGEST HUMAN EVER EXISTED❗❗❗

I think for the average person Mitchell Hooper would fall into the category of “great athlete who flies under the radar” People still think Eddie Hall is the worlds strongest man almost 10 years later so yeah
