      if im not wrong eddie trains 2-3 times a day(not every day, but we've seen his rutine), doing like 1 h of swiming around 2 h gym x2 times I dont think it would be crazy that he burns around 3k -4k extra calories counting his bodyweight making him burn more and exercise more exausting, id say he needs 6.5k to 7k to just maintain, even with that he still overeating for clickbait haha

      @@mitchellhooperstrongman Makes me wonder how much I was eating while int he military. At my most I was having 3 meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner and eating 3 MRE's. Plus anything extra I could grab and go with. Mind you I was deployed to the desert and working my ass off. I know supposedly a typical MRE has 1,250 calories. but can be as high at 1,500. So 3,750 in MRE, and if each meal was 1,000 I was hitting 6-7k total maybe more. I couldn't imagine eating 12k everyday oof.

    I'm glad such a major player in strongman is calling out the whole 'EPIC ten-BAZILLION-calorie full-day-of-eating' trend. As it happens, Eddie himself has gone on record saying he didn't actually eat this much *every single day*. He tried it for one day as a test during his time competing, then went to bed feeling extremely ill and decided never to do it ever again. Like with a lot of strongman content: it's all marketing.

    Just a comment about BMR calculation for anyone looking into it. The Harris-Benedict equation is most accurate in general population and was also based primarily in north america. If you have a low bf% and high muscle mass the Cunningham or Katch-McArdle equations are probably going to be more accurate but they do require your lean body mass. Oxford is also the standard equation used for general population in Europe (only one I've ever used for GP as a sports scientist in Ireland), the sample size was 100 times as large and more diverse than Harris-Benedict.
    But with all BMR calculations, your milage may vary. Ideally either have it lab tested or use your daily/weekly body weight and calorie tracking to determine maintenance and adjust from there.

      I'm sure Eddie didn't wake up one day and just decide he was going to eat 10k of calories per day. I'm sure his diet only grew, because he was plateauing on the amount of calories he was consuming, so he increased it. And you don't know if he could've accomplished what he did without eating what he ate. How many people you think have ever deadlifted 500kg, let alone in competition?
      He might very well have shortened his life by eating the foods he ate to the excesses that he ate, but that's part of the game. Even if he ate "better fats," that is still like putting a band aid on a gunshot wound.

He has also a degree. I think his perspectives on his videos give a fair balance between health and fitness, which not necessarily align these days. Eg. being fit/strong don't necessarily mean being healthy
    How many of the fitness and internet names you know provide such support in their "expert views" of whatever topic they speak bout. I can probably count them with fingers. Most of them probably don't even like to read, except news of their respective sport. I thin this is of such tremendous value for us because it is education to improve and awareness of our health. Most of these guys speak I think speak and recommend based on their personal experience and pretend to know when they are not.
    Personally I find hard to believe and even question sometimes the information these guys, fitness guys give and show...so we have to be careful to what he hear and see on the Internet and for those who have kids, make sure to supervise what they do

      @mathiaskjeldgaardpetersen5926 Digestibility and quality are also factors that only play if you are not eating a varied diet. You might look at the protein quality of rice, say it's 50%, and the protein quality of lentils, and say oh it's 60%, and a cup of rice has maybe 3g of protein and cup of lentils has maybe 6g of protein, and you do the math and you say oh I only got 0.5 * 3 + 0.6 * 6 = 1.5 + 3.6 = 5.1g of protein out of 9g. But reality is, the amino acid profile of the lentil might complete the amino acid profile of the rice, and you end up with the entire meal having a 100% digestibility even though the individual sources don't -- ending up with the entire 9g of protein absorbed.

      @@Adiarby13 *sighs inwardly. He does not require 13000 calories and, as stated in the video, the food he is eating is not fuelling his training in any meaningful way. He will require extra protein for muscle growth and perhaps additional carbs before a workout, in a simple, easy to metabolise form. But the food he eats and the quantities he eats it in, are cartoonish. He will not burn anywhere near the amount of calories he is taking in. He would need to burn an additional 8000 calories PER DAY to warrant the amount of calories he eats, putting aside the unhealthy nature of a lot of the food. His excess mass is a sign of that. Strength work taxes the muscles but doesn’t burn masses of calories. I completed an hour interval running workout this morning and burnt around 800 calories. I did an hour of strength training, antagonist supersets with 4 sets of 10 strength exercises, grouped in 2s. 40 second rest in between set, 90 seconds between exercise. I burnt around 400 calories. But what do I know, I’m just an endurance athlete.

He wasnt trying to burn calories. he wasnt tryin to look good in front of the mirror. It’s where they tot up the calories of the meal and say shit like, "so that's a 2300 calories meal on its own. With the mayo that's an extra 150 ish calories, the OJ an extra what? 300 calories? So with the extras let's call it 3000 calories for lunch" Umm no, let's not, because it isn’t.
    They do this for every meal and by the end of the video all the widely overestimated calories, or just outright wrong, bullshitted ones (like when he said 4 slices of fried bread, when really it's two cut in half), has added an extra 3000 calories. 500 extra for all 6 meals. Training as a bodybuilder (but a lot of focus too on powerlifting) I went to a lean 205 in about 8 years, no gear utilized. I cannot imagine eating 16K calories daily, or why it would be beneficial to try. Maybe taking steroids would help with absorption/utilization of those calories... I don't know very much about them. 5500 calories was a tremendous amount of food to maintain over that period, when you are eating rice, chicken, fish, broccoli, and cabbage. Yeah Eddie Hall is one of the strongest men to ever live and his accomplishments in sports are hard to argue with. And he didn't start eating as big as he ate for the WSM just from day one. He progressively ate more and more, because he saw it affected his ability (in a good way) to compete and to lift heavy.
      Eddie would be the first to say what he ate and how much wasn't the healthiest, but he wasn't competing in The World's Healthiest Man either.

    Eddie often falls for misinformation (e.g. "superfoods" and "cryotherapy" and "juice from red meat goes to your muscles"), but his diet and methods at least were sufficient and permissive of his training and performances to be one of the greatest Strongman athletes of the last decade!

    • @zacharylaschober
      @zacharylaschober 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The "problem" of world class athletes is genetics, circumstance, and personality means anything done with enough intention works, and there is such a misattribution of success to all of the trivialities which because of the context seem crucial. Cryotherapy and red light therapies seem more transgressive than getting off the phone an hour before bed. Eddie would be The Beast no matter what he did as long as he trained hard.
      I doubt there is anyone world class who does not have a few ritualistic, confirmation biased placebos to owe a career to atop great genetics, minimal injury, consistency, work ethic, and access.

      It increases it drastically. Depending on what you run, you may find yourself needing to eat and extra 1200
      Calories a day to keep up. Plus, as a natural you will only experienced enhanced MPS for 24 hours after a training stimulus. When you run test, you are always in that enhanced state and you can utilize much more protein as a result. You need to eat every 2-3 hours just because the amount of calories isn’t manageable otherwise.

  • @Fast-Alex
    @Fast-Alex 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Dr Mike stated in a video a while back that some “gear” protocols require 1.25-1.5g/lb of body weight per day. And I think we can safely say that Eddie was certainly on gear at this point. Being enhanced changes the standard considerations, no? Not saying this isn’t insanely excessive haha, just thinking that special consideration should be taken into account with someone on gear.

      Any time protien g/lb of bodyweight is cited, you can always reject it outright and absolutely.
      LEAN body mass is the criteria. Not overall body weight.
      A 400lb person with 40% bodyfat does not need anywhere near as much as a 400lb person with 20% body fat.
      These two people of the same weight have lean body masses of 240lb and 320lb respectively. The latter requires 1.33x the protein intake. More, even. Because he is probably trying to build muscle mass. The other is a Cheeto finger video game nerd.

    Math doesn't math for me. At 162KG he'd need 350 ish grams of protein. Smaller meals as suggested (30g) means he'd have to eat 35G every hour for 10 hours for digestible efficiency. Presuming a meal lasted 30 mins, he's constantly eating all day no time for other activity, no? None of this makes sense. You can eat massive meals like him just fine. Your body makes it work. It's not like he lost muscle, or weight.

    • @fihimsadiq8779
      @fihimsadiq8779 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Your body can utilise more protein after fasting(sleep) and exercise. There was a study with 100g of protein, showing that it increased muscle protein synthesis by like 14% more than the 25g meal.

    • @6thsense464
      @6thsense464 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It was already debunked by new studies. Body digest more protein that it was previous believed and it does it through the whole day not just by one meal, so even if you load it in fewer meals, body will use that(not all but a lot more than it was previously believed). That is why you see some people with a ton of muscle even though they only eat once or twice a day. Also the fact that when you are on gear muscle can use even more protein so there is that. So you are right indeed.

    Eddie should not have been anywhere near that 450 lbs that he was. Hooper is bigger than him naturally, I think anyways. Eddie was forcing himself to gain weight (fast), so that he could move more weight. He thought, and perhaps was right, that he had to be that big to compete with such giants. You shouldn't be factoring in the TEF into someone's TDEE because it's already accounted for in nutrition labels. E.g. protein is about 5.25 kcal/g but 4 kcal/gram after the TEF. If you add the TEF to his TDEE then you're double counting.
