Alex was absolutely playing his cards pretty tight to his chest when talking about the corridor animatic... Would love to hear more of his genuine views on both how AI fits in this medium but how well this short aped more authentic anime...
Truth is that for different people at different times of their careers, AI will affect differently. For older animators, at the top of the food chain. AI art sounds like a great way to automatically clean up/in-between frames they draw. Saving them costs and money (if they run their own studios). For someone like Alex, who is advanced in his career, but still has to do a lot of hand animation, things are differently. It's undeniable that AI animation will cut off some jobs. It may not replace an entire 3D Animation Team, but we can expect some jobs to fizzle out. How much the guests care about these jobs or not, is very rooted in how far are their careers: For a director, lead animator and other big jobs, AI is a dream come true. For people starting out in the industry, it's a nightmare.
I doubt you'd get the answer you want. Most veteran animators seem to be confident enough in their value that they don't see AI as a threat. Multiple veteran animators reacted to the first Rock, Paper, Scissors similarly.
Yeah that was a very diplomatic answer without actually giving his opinion on the piece. Most likely because he didn't want to offend. But it was nice to see him genuinely appreciate cool shots in it.
LAND OF THE LUSTROUS. In my opinion, it's Studio Orange's underappreciated masterpiece, what they do with the animation and storytelling is masterclass level
Literally the show that cemented them as the 3d animation power house of japan and yet was dismissed by everyone and refused to give it a chance for being a 3d anime. Doesnt help it came out around the same time of berserk 2016.
@@leonardoscardicchio5627I think if they go for a 2nd season there's not a good stopping point if it goes for ~35 chapters like the 1st season. So perhaps they're waiting for more chapters to come out and make a good season ending? Right now we're at ch 104 I believe. So ~70 chapters to work with.
4:43 I love how Wrens facial expression exactly mirrors mine, as I was watching the scenes from Chainsaw Man: Confusion, slight disgust and more confusion.
The show Chowder from Cartoon Network had a cool texture effect going on, where the people would move but the texture would stay in the same place. Always thought it was unique
There's an anime called Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo that does the same effect and predates Chowder. There may be other even earlier shows, but that's the one I know of.
Studio Orange is one of the biggest names in 3D anime. It's really cool to see you guys covering their work. If you decide to look at more of their work, I highly recommend Land of the Lustrous. There are some amazing scenes in it with some really cool use of camera perspective. It's all the more amazing since it's one of Studio Orange's earlier works. The Trash Taste podcast had one of their animators on for an episode which explained a lot of Studio Orange's process. They talked a lot about Trigun and was very informational regarding 3D anime.
Yeah, Land of the Lustrous was probably one of the first "fully CG" anime that managed to actually look good and started changing the perception of CG in anime. Up untill that point CG was always associated with jank and just bad animation in general although you had some shows like Ajin where the CG was actually pretty solid (hallway fight was sick), but land of the lustrous was the big turning point where alot of people started going "damn, this CG stuff can actually look really fucking good!". Another studio that does CG really well is Ufotable, not in the same way, but the way they blend their animation with CG effects makes for some of the most stunning scenes in anime, incredible art, effects and animation. They've been setting and raising the bar for what everyone else are measured against ever since Kara No Kyoukai, then with the fate series and now Demon Slayer.
i'd love to see an Animators react episode just about 90s Nicktoons. Some of the animation on the original seasons of rugrats was INSANE, same creative director as Aeon Flux
I'd love to see Phil Tippet on an episode of the show, idk if it's animators or stop motion artists or what, but he's been in the industry for years and is still making fantastic art like Mad God.
Love the chainsaw man appreciation, the anime is so unique with style and camera shots seeing it get that appreciation from an animators eye is awesome
"The Southern Raiders" episode of Avatar The Last Airbender had a surprisingly dark exploration of revenge. "The Puppetmaster" episode as well. Granted ATLA is a much more mature than usual animated series. But those episodes still stood out as exceptionally dark.
One of my favorite episodes is the Beach. It's not DARK, it's not ACTION PACKED, but it dives into the lives and personalities of the show's villains in a way that not many other shows have. "My own mother...thought I was a monster. She was right of course but it still hurt." For an episode that is all about playing on the beach tropes in anime, it got real deep REAL fast.
I remember an episode of Ed, Edd, and Eddy that I saw as a kid that was so strange and out of place it felt like a fever dream and for a while I thought I actually dreamed it because I didn't see it aired on TV again. I think Jimmy's outline (like, the one hes drawn with) is literally peeled off of him and he floats away like a smoke cloud. And thats just one of many 4th wall breaking things that episode. Idk if that classifies as dark but maybe worth checking out.
Hands down for most dark twist to a visually not-dark show is Made in the Abyss. I could point out plenty of scenes but i would say the elevator scene in particular or episode 10 of the first season where one of the characters receives a pretty horrific injury. It's just such an absurdly brutal show conceptually when it's artstyle is super chibi and cute. REALLY interesting core concept to the world and series, I think you guys would like it.
When it comes to dark animation, I immediately think of Watership Down- there are several different styles shown in it, from the very stylised parable of El-ahrairah at the start, to Fiver's nightmare vision, to the base animation itself - its one of the few animated films in which the style is highly realistic and gritty but still expressive enough to convey character emotions.
Oh watership down is incredibly beautiful While the newer one looks nice, it comes nowhere near the first one in terms of style and feeling I also loved the Animals of Farthing Wood growing up
Since the fall season is slowly creeping in seeing y’all react to Over The Garden Wall would be cool especially the last few episodes fitting in with the somewhat dark theme
A very weird and oddly dark episode that immediately came to mind was the Adventure Time episode "No One Can Here You" where Finn goes unconscious and wakes up to find everyone gone except for Jake who has gone insane.
What Studio Orange has been doing with their CGI is really remarkable, especially with how fluid it was in Trigun. Chainsaw Man also has some amazing CG animation.
I hate it. Reminds me of genshin impact. Like why are we choosing to go backwards in art style just to have better animations. I don't think it's worth it
I wanted to love it, but so often when it's in motion the movement of a character feels like it's in a 2001 video game cutscene. I just find it so distracting and can't get used to it.
@@boigercat Yep, I don't like it either. I don't have a problem with CGI backgrounds but I find it very noticeable when it is used for character movements

I love seeing animators react. Would love to see you guys react to some of Monty Oum's work (from Dead Fantasy, Red VS Blue and RWBY). In my opinion he animated some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.
I'd love you guys to cover 'Asterix In Britain'. The whole thing is gorgeous but the hand-animated ocean in the intro sequence is some of the best animated water I've ever seen.
Yup! My mind immediately went to Dark Harvest. Especially the scene where Zim swaps the school secretary's brain with a can of soda - she answers the phone only to have a bunch of foam pour out of her mouth while she stares ahead, blank-eyed.
Trigun looks like someone took all the character intro and special attack animations from a fighting game and turned them into an anime. All those little things that have to grab your attention in the couple seconds they play for between gameplay, but it's one scene after the other with no intermission. And I mean that in the best way possible.
i love this, many people doesn't like anime not being purely hand drawn, but nowadays, many anime applies CG in some part, at least in some of their scenes and i think it's inevitable. Can you guys react more about these stuff? I really expect more about anime that that fully CG such as expelled from paradise and arpeggio of blue steel
There are two dark and disturbing episodes from my childhood that still live rent free in my brain to this day: Dark Harvest from Invader Zim and No One Can Hear You from Adventure Time
I love the Animators React episodes! Would be great if they looked at Land of the Lustrous for CGI animation and maybe also Promare Knights of Sidonia would be an interesting one for them to look at as well Violet Evergarden is also beautifully animated
@@BeyondTrash-xe1vsyeah no, it’s just bad lol, and the ai makes it so so much worse that a “small studio” isn’t an excuse. Besides that’s just an animation, it’s simply not anime for what anime stands for
The laser spin is also a great example of great direction. The point about "feeling himspinning the gun inside" really showas that. The build up of the cool looking spinning isn´t just there to just look cool. It directly sets up the finishing move that follows. The gun "charging" getting brighter in the colour of the beam, during the spinning trick. It directly feeds into the next event and already subconciously brings the mind to spinning the beam. The realisation of what will happen during the short build up of the laser being still directly comes from the ideas set up before. Thats how this stuff is done well. As George Lukas would say "It´s like poetry, it rymes."
Gosh I am so happy you guys reacted to Trigun Stampede, literally is an absolute work of art in animation, cg, ost eveerryyyyyything. Part the fandom is so attached to the older 98' anime and not giving it a chance. Its STUNNING!
There's an episode of the Gargoyles where Demona turns the whole city into statues and just start walking down the street blasting people even just shooting off the arms of one lady I could only imagine the horror she endured when she turned back to Human
I recently rewatched all of Gargoyles (for the first time since the mid-90s). I had completely forgotten that Demona had shattered multiple people on-screen in this four part episode arc. And that multiple Gargoyles from Demona’s clan (in the flashbacks scenes) were shattered on-screen as well. Much of the time anyone that is shattered is shattered off-screen (or we see the shatter happen in the shadows). Or if there ever was an on-screen shatter, it often wasn’t actually real (it was an illusion, or a dream, a fake, or whatnot). But definitely not this multi-episode arc. It’s all fully on-screen, front and center (nothing obscuring it).
@@brietzke99Yeah, definitely. Thank you, Disney Plus, for reintroducing Gargoyles to me. Someone else in this video’s comments section mentioned the “Future Tense” episode as another dark episode. Which I definitely agree with. I had forgotten a lot of Gargoyles (from when I watched as a kid), but the “Future Tense” episode was one of the few episodes that remained (mostly-) clear in my memory from childhood well into adulthood.
Also the episode where Broadway plays with Elisa's gun and accidently shoots her. Elisa nearly dies and there was even a pool of blood onscreen. The episode was dropped from reruns.
Would love to see you guys react to some of the original Beast Wars show. There is some important stuff with that one. Also, there are some strange choices made later seasons, but with character models from the first season.
Trigun was one of my all time favorite anime's when I was growing up and when they said they were remaking it and that it was going to be CG, not going to lie I was completely put off. However decided to give it a try when it aired and it is outstanding. It's the first time watching a CG anime where just every episode visually something amazed me, it's well worth watching.
Madoka Magica has a famous tone shift from lighthearted to super dark, but that was more than one episode and very intentional. I think Neon Genesis Evangelion had similar shifts in tone over the show. I would love either to be covered by Animators React!
Thinking of shows that go from light-hearted to super dark is difficult but I think Made in Abyss is a good choice that dips in and out of actual horror. MItty and Faputa have such dark stories to them but we also have the constant fear and horror when watching one of our MC's after they ascend even a tiny bit.
The Animals of Farthing Wood kinda traumatized me as a kid. Particularly the scene where the hedgehogs get run over. A mouse's babies also get impaled on thorn bushes. Yes, it's a kids' show. The "Future Tense" episode of Gargoyles where everybody dies was also pretty dark.
I absolutely adore that show despite how depressing it can get at times As a kid, I used to be up at like 6 every morning just to catch the next episode Such an underappreciated show
I want to see either a VFX artists react or an Animators react to ANIMUSIC!!! They're cool and still hold up really well for their age. The midi-motion technology is super cool, too!
First one that comes to mind is TMNT 2003 and Danny Phantom. These shows have at LEAST one "what if" episode and that what if is DARK. ASF. In TMNT 2003, the episode "Same as it Never Was" details Donatello, often described as the gentle, kind hearted one in this and many iterations, goes to a future where the family he knows, is quite different, and the future isn't anything to look forward to. it's important to note Donatello's disposition because THAT'S what makes this episode super fricked up. Why DONNIE of all Turtles? In Danny Phantom the episode "The Ultimate Enemy" details Danny coming face to face with his own future self,, and it along with Donatello, is also nothing to look forward to. It makes you realize how much trauma Danny goes through on day to day basis, and still manages to hold through, mostly because of his support system. But if he didn't have that support system, his grief would be all consuming. Highly recommend you react to both. The animators do a lot of fun things with shadows, and angles that make the episodes stand out. Even to this day, I'll never forget the words "Some things my boy...are better left unsaid." along with "my brothers....my poor brothers."
@@ryanelliott6706 lol that's ALWAYS a first mention when it comes to dark cartoons so i wanted to mention some that people might not bring up. TMNT 2003 was more serious, but not entirely DARK. SAINW and TUE for DP though...Jesus
I remember two episodes from the 90s Spider-man animated series Make-A-Wish and Attack of the Octobots. Doc Ock manages to control Spider-man and use him as his subordinate. A young girl saves him in the end. Spider-man brings her home. She asks him if he can take off his mask. He obliges. She says I won't tell anyone for as long as I live." When Spider-man leaves, the camera pulls out to reveal that the girl lives in a home for terminally ill children.
Finally, Trigun Stampede caught your attention guys! I'm a fan of the original anime (and its approach to the story) and Trigun Stampede brings another new approach to the Trigun universe. Besides of the story, Studio Orange is a beast of 3DCG anime, I can guarantee you'll mesmerized by their animation. They took all the essence of anime and express it through new techniques, just try watch the first episode and pay attention to the character's facial expression. Although they use 3D CGI, they never skip the dynamics of the expression and movement, Meryl Stryfe was never as cute as this latest rendition of her

I would really love to see you guys opinion on the anime "Gankutsuou" which is a futuristic adaption of The Count of Monte Cristo The anime style is really beautiful
Studio Orange KILLS IT with their 3D animation. I’d say they’re the best at using it in the business, and the sheer AMOUNT of 3D they use while still making a great product is impressive.
@@SammysapphiraHow? If you are comparing to the old anime, one: the old anime differs from the source material, and two: Tristamp's director never watched the 98 show because he wanted tristamp to use more of the source material and to honor Nightow's work in a new way, so it was already expected that the show would differ a lot from the 98 version. Personally, I liked Tristamp WAY more than Trigun 98, so to me it didnt ruin the story at all, it improved and took actual canon stuff into consideration. Gonna be honest, I gave up Trigun 98 fairly quick I hated how slow it was and how much they turned Vash into a womanizer for no reason, but that was my opinion, it doesnt mean the show is bad, it was just not my cup of tea. I like the fast paced, more darker tone of tristamp. And lets not forget the first season works as a prequel which explain many of the changes people initially complained about. All versions of the srory are great in their own way and can please different tastes, but in the end these are all the same characters that we love so much
My "issue" with that episode is that they seem to treat what's the current pinnacle of mixed shonen/seinen at the same level as Dragon ball/Bleach/Naruto type thing. (I love those, but we're not talking about the same audience and cultural depth)
You should check out Dorohedoro. It's got hand drawn backgrounds, but the characters are cg It's the most natural looking cgi I've seen so far, and the style that comes out is really unique
Studio Orange is fuckin’ incredible with their 3D CGI work. Ufotable is the runner up, in my opinion, mainly because Orange uses almost full 3D in all their shows while Ufotable is smart about incorporating 3D in the backgrounds for dynamic shots.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of an oddly dark episode of a cartoon, is the bloodbending episode in Avatar: The Last Airbender ("The Puppetmaster" EP#48) The body contortions really freaked me out as a kid and even as an adult I'm hesitant to rewatch that specific episode.
CSM is so damn good. It was frustrating that a lot of contrarians were ragging on the CG animation when it wasn't even CG. lol Even if it was CG, it was great and Mappa always delivers amazing animation.
The problem was they were using the CG when it wasn't necessary. When the camera was in motion the CGI was good and even necessary but when they'd use it in stills and it just feels wrong. Also keep in mind that when everything is good the bad becomes glaring. There aren't many of those scenes but they're there.
@@psy_99 You say when it "wasn't necessary", but I think that's misguided. It's not because they used it in stills that it didn't serve a certain purpose. Maybe it was cost, a test they couldn't replace, consistency between scenes, etc.

This was great bec it started with legit anime, to a creation that's essentially a celebration of animation, to a middle finger to animators. Insane variety in today's episode.
Rock, Paper, Scissors isn't a middle finger to animators. They created their own art style for the AI, storyboarded and filmed every scene. Animated plenty of actual animation within the episode itself. There's absolutely no way you can call that a middle finger to animators, especially when most veteran animators don't seem to have much bad to say about it.
That's... weirdly apt in more ways than one...? Powerpuff Girls - Season 2, Episode 12 "Speed Demon". They travel 50 years into the future by having a race home, but go too quick around the earth, and they arrive at 50 years later, and while they were missing for those 50 years, "him" took over the city, and everyone blames them, and the city fell into a dystopian state. It ends with him trying to save his family (that he now loves) from a burning house but they just melt, and he escapes and Scarlett asks if there was anything important in the house and he stares at the burning house with tears in his eyes and says, "nothing... just a dream".
Understandable that he didn’t want to make things awkward by saying it looked bad.
Still craving season 2 goddammit!
Is it the one with the different minerals as characters?
I loved this show and I never see anyone talking about it
YAAAAAAS IVE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS FROM THEM FOR YEARS!!!!
Watch it man.
I second it, you should watch it. That way you experience confusion, disgust, and more confusion.
The show Chowder from Cartoon Network had a cool texture effect going on, where the people would move but the texture would stay in the same place. Always thought it was unique
There's an anime called Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo that does the same effect and predates Chowder. There may be other even earlier shows, but that's the one I know of.
honestly quite a few cartoons do this, I'm certain its just a faster way to fill and color in frames, but it sure looks cool :P
Honestly its just a clipping mask which is like one click lol bit the fact that they are the only show to use that effect does make it cool
Misadventures of flapjack! Anyone remember that? ... damn cartoon network had a lot of dark shows now that i think about it
Bojack Horseman also used a similar technique, it's really subtle but looks pretty neat.
Wren’s face watching Chainsaw Man at 4:43 is priceless 😂
I mean when you see a part man, part chain, all saw splitting a floating zombie head in half, what other face are you supposed to pull lol
I need to see this! The whole process behind TriStamp is so cool!
They've been setting and raising the bar for what everyone else are measured against ever since Kara No Kyoukai, then with the fate series and now Demon Slayer.
id also add beastars to that list.
Land of the Lustrous is a must have to be in this channel.
Studio Orange has the 3D animation vibes of anime games like Punishing Gray Raven or Arknights. Like, its clean, so clean.
i'd love to see an Animators react episode just about 90s Nicktoons. Some of the animation on the original seasons of rugrats was INSANE, same creative director as Aeon Flux
I came here to mention the first Rugrats movie. That movie went to some daaaaark places.
Would love an "animators react" to the Nimona movie! love the artstyle in that movie!
I'd love to see Phil Tippet on an episode of the show, idk if it's animators or stop motion artists or what, but he's been in the industry for years and is still making fantastic art like Mad God.
"I think I've just become extinct..."
Oh, that's an excellent suggestion!
Love the chainsaw man appreciation, the anime is so unique with style and camera shots seeing it get that appreciation from an animators eye is awesome
A fun stunt scene to look at is the original 1940s Mark of Zorro movie. There's a stunt where Zorro jumps a horse off a bridge into shallow water.
Original Zorro has literal parkour stunts
"The Southern Raiders" episode of Avatar The Last Airbender had a surprisingly dark exploration of revenge. "The Puppetmaster" episode as well. Granted ATLA is a much more mature than usual animated series. But those episodes still stood out as exceptionally dark.
Two of the best episodes
@@TheJerbol That show goes hard. I put it up there with literary classics like Shakespeare. It's a brilliant and vibrantly written show.
The Puppetmaster is one of my top ATLA episodes, I didn't expect them to go that dark
Was literally just about to comment this 😂
One of my favorite episodes is the Beach.
The episode is called One Plus One Equals Ed
Oh watership down is incredibly beautiful
While the newer one looks nice, it comes nowhere near the first one in terms of style and feeling
I also loved the Animals of Farthing Wood growing up
Since the fall season is slowly creeping in seeing y’all react to Over The Garden Wall would be cool especially the last few episodes fitting in with the somewhat dark theme
Yesss
A very weird and oddly dark episode that immediately came to mind was the Adventure Time episode "No One Can Here You" where Finn goes unconscious and wakes up to find everyone gone except for Jake who has gone insane.
Freak Deer!

Clone Wars Umbaran arc had some dark stuff to it. There were many dark moments in Transformers Prime, which is a fantastic show in general

I love seeing animators react. Would love to see you guys react to some of Monty Oum's work (from Dead Fantasy, Red VS Blue and RWBY). In my opinion he animated some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.
That dudes understanding/intuition for camera movement in animation was on another level man.
I would love to see the guys look over the insanity that is Nichijou.
I'm so happy you guys finally brought this series back. Hopefully you talk about more anime, and particularly the 2D animation.
I'd love you guys to cover 'Asterix In Britain'. The whole thing is gorgeous but the hand-animated ocean in the intro sequence is some of the best animated water I've ever seen.
Just Asterix in general.
YES! FINALLY SOME ANIMATORS REACTS!!!
Honestly, it's soo rare, but it's so fun to learn more about animation through you guys so I hope there is more.
I think Invader Zim took an especially dark turn when he took a whole bunch of organs from school kids, because more organs means more human.
I'll never forget that episode
Invader Zim was always sort of messed up.

Yup! My mind immediately went to Dark Harvest. Especially the scene where Zim swaps the school secretary's brain with a can of soda - she answers the phone only to have a bunch of foam pour out of her mouth while she stares ahead, blank-eyed.
classic zim
Trigun looks like someone took all the character intro and special attack animations from a fighting game and turned them into an anime. All those little things that have to grab your attention in the couple seconds they play for between gameplay, but it's one scene after the other with no intermission.
And I mean that in the best way possible.
it's Guilty Gear but as a series
i love this, many people doesn't like anime not being purely hand drawn, but nowadays, many anime applies CG in some part, at least in some of their scenes and i think it's inevitable.
Would be great if they looked at Land of the Lustrous for CGI animation and maybe also Promare
Knights of Sidonia would be an interesting one for them to look at as well
Violet Evergarden is also beautifully animated

@@suntanironman gargoyles was the very first show I re-watch when Disney plus became active and yeah I had the exact same experience

I'm waiting for the Across the Spider-Verse video. That needs a full episode dedicated to it.
Space Dandy: A World Without Sadness, Baby. Is an oddly dark episode that has a very different tone from the rest of the show

Twisted cartoon episode: there are a lot of crazy Courage the Cowardly Dog episodes but the “Return the Slab” guy is by far the most haunting for me
Madoka Magica has a famous tone shift from lighthearted to super dark, but that was more than one episode and very intentional.
Yessss i’m so glad someone else other than me remembers this show from their childhood.

Courage the cowardly dog still haunts my dreams.
He obliges. She says I won't tell anyone for as long as I live." Finally, Trigun Stampede caught your attention guys!

I was so glad that Trigun Stampede was done as well as it was. Easily one if not the best anime I’ve seen done with 3D animation.
Studio Orange KILLS IT with their 3D animation. I’d say they’re the best at using it in the business, and the sheer AMOUNT of 3D they use while still making a great product is impressive.
The animation was good, but they ruined the story.
The quality of their 3D stems from it almost behaving like it's 2D. They're so good at it.
I'd love to see them and ufoTable collab on something.
When I was watching it I actually forgot it was CG with how well done it was.

Studio Orange is fuckin’ incredible with their 3D CGI work. Ufotable is the runner up, in my opinion, mainly because Orange uses almost full 3D in all their shows while Ufotable is smart about incorporating 3D in the backgrounds for dynamic shots.

I saw it more than 15 years ago, and still I remember it.
There's an episdoe of GI Joe called "There's No Place Like Springfield". Shipwreck falls unconscious and finds himself 6 years in the future after the war and he has a family and kids, but things aren't quiet right and he thinks he's going crazy and it turns out he's in a fake town Cobra created to extract information from him. The weird shit is that people in the simulation are made out of slime and when things go wrong they melt, and he just thinks he's loosing his mind. It ends with him trying to save his family (that he now loves) from a burning house but they just melt, and he escapes and Scarlett asks if there was anything important in the house and he stares at the burning house with tears in his eyes and says, "nothing... just a dream". STNG did the same plot a few years later called Future Imperfect.
