  • new desk! woah! actually it's because i'm in college now and this video is being filmed from my dorm wowie
    // configuration
    board: mode sonnet (navy top, gold accent and base)
    switches: hmx xinhai switches, stock. L+F black cherry pie (jwk bottom, cherry top, cream stem) in spacebar
    stabilizers: tx ap stabilizers lubed with 205g0
    keycaps: osume tsukimi
    plate: pom
    mount: stack mount
    foams, other mods: plate foam
    filmed on fuji x-t3 with 7artisans 35mm f1.2, mic is at2005usb. (audio has a slight equalizer applied that reduces desk noise in the low end. sound is otherwise completely unedited and is more or less reasonably accurate to real life.)
    // thoughts on HMX/the switches
    these are, without a doubt, my favorite switches i've ever used. out of all the manufacturers i've tried (BSUN, JWK, Gateron, Tecsee, KTT, HMX, Cherry among others), HMX has been the best by far, without any of the unpleasant sounds (leaf/spring/etc ticking) that i've noticed on switches from all of the other aforementioned manufacturers.
    as far as the xinhais specifically, they are exceptionally smooth stock, without any wobble or spring/leaf noise issues. they have a nice, poppy mid-pitched sound with the sort of "thick" sound signature that pretty much all HMX switches have. they're somewhat similar in sound to the BSUN switches i've tried, but with more of a... pop? to them compared to those.
    i would absolutely recommend these to anyone looking for a linear switch for their next build, especially at the price of just $0.35/switch.
    // other general thoughts
    i wouldn't say the sonnet is my absolute favorite board i've tried as far as sound goes. it sounds great with the right build, but i find that it can have a bit of a "thud-y" sound profile. (although part of that may just be the keycaps i'm using. osume caps look great but i'm not sure if i really love the way they sound.) feel is great, though a bit stiff, and of course the sonnet is still (imo) one of the best looking boards you can buy, particularly given that it's just about always in stock.

    That is true with my Sonnet and Loop. I guess that is the signature of Mode having that "thuddy" sound profile.

      spacebars always sound different, ultra wide keycap with lots of extra resonance

      @@inspire1ove yes, i have a black cherry pie (the frankenswitch, not the BSUN) in the spacebar. forgot to mention it, sorry. i'll put it in the description now. that being said, the spacebar does still sound quite different from the alphas even when i do have an identical switch in there. i just liked the way the BCP sounded in the spacebar more than the xinhai (which was also good)
