Russell avg 15 points a game in his career, and had 6-8 HOF teammates every single year. That’s like KD’s Warriors squad, plus Booker, Paul George, and Embiid. Teams didn’t have balance back then before 1980s, matter of fact, 80% of the players played right handed. And, playoffs had one round less and there weren’t many teams.
@@halfshot253They were not a superteam. Those guys formed together and grew together. It's not like today when you enter free agency and go anywhere you want. But Michael is way more of a player than Russell or Wilt.
@Hinshu85 in the 1960s, realistically, MJ would have been a lesser version of Elgin baylor because Elgin was a creative basketball genius and while MJ brought to basketball wasn't creativity, MJ was stunning to watch but he copied the greats before him even copying and perfecting Wilts fadaway and Elgins moves.... The implication being as good as Elgin was and as good as MJ was he wasn't the player scoring and defensive wise as Wilt.... I don't care how fast an era was 'like' the 1960s when you average 50 plus and 23 rebounds and someone like Elgin cannot match you....thats an anomaly and shows just that MJ's a gifted basketball player and after Muhammad Ali a celebrity beyond compare, yet he didn't have Wilts gifts....
@@allistermcginlay6476 I’ll say it, Wilt was trash in the finals. He’s the reason why they lost so many of them, West had to drag them back in year after year. In Wilt’s 2 championships, he was only MVP in one of them. If anyone that is not in the top 10 of all time, it’s Wilt. I put KD and Dream over Wilt.
The truth is the rules of professional basketball were changed to make it more difficult for Wilt, they were later changed to make it easier for Michael. Different era different game/style of play.
Back in those days if anyone tried what Jordan did they would shut it down immediately. Bad boy piston style, also the refs called travels and carrying violations often for nothing let alone how everyone dribbles nowadays. Wilt would physically dominate anyone in any era besides a few who played very smart and had crazy stamina. Shaq obviously wouldnt be physically dominated in pure strength. But they would be boding each other and shaq will get tired and stay bsck on defense while Wilt gets a fast break. Imagine Lebron at 7'1 with Shaq's strength. That was basically Wilt. Wilt and Lebron have the same 40 yd time as well along with marathon running level stamina.
@Marty13153 Wilt played guard for the globetrotters in the ABA, killed it. One dribble dunks from pretty much 15 feet out. We've all seen the video of him making hella 3 ball hook shots in a row. And thr testimony on his strength should speak for itself. The only thing that's not 100% valid in my statement is I've only see ln a few videos of Wilt playing guard. You should try looking it up im pretty sure it was a video on how high he jumped on the Wilt chamberlain archive.
I'm not a big MJ fan either. But we have to remember, as far as Bill Russell's titles are concerned, he won 9 of those 11 at a time when there were less than 10 teams. The last 2 titles were won with only 14 teams. Jordan, Pippen & the Bulls had double & even triple the competition.
@@GeorgeBorregono it wasn't if you saw him play, Russell always won against Wilt except for 67 in a semi segregated less athletic league. Wilt got stats like LeBron but didn't win but twice enough.
@@JC13406Doesn't matter. The fact is he won 11 CHAMPIONSHIPS, and if I'm not mistaken eight of them were consecutively. You can't hold him responsible for the NBA having fewer teams in the league. Even Kareem Abdul Jabbar said that if Oscar Robinson (THE BIG "O") had played against Jordan he would have embarrassed him. Michael Jordan was in my opinion the greatest player of HIS era, but he is not the G.O.A.T. People here will disagree and call me crazy (AND I DON'T CARE) but I know better.
I am old enough to see Wilt choke to the Celtics with 3 other HOFers on his team. I saw him choke to the Celtics in Russell's last title win and in the famous Willis Reed. Both Russell and Wilt played in an era where the great big men won and the game was designed for them because of their height and athletic skills. However Jordan shattered that paradigm as a 6'6 two guard. I saw the infamous Kansas v. North Carolina college game that Wilt lost too. Michael was the closer. If you had one shot to win the game, you are not picking Wilt or Russell. Furthermore you can NEVER be the GOAT when you can't shoot free throws. Additionally the 3 point shot has neutralized the big man to a certain extent. Wilt always wanted to be the man and go after the young guys. I say young Kareem cook him. He would have had a problem defending Robinson, Dream, Duncan, Shaq, Ewing and prime Parish and Walton would have given him problems too. His argument bringing up Russell is a non starter because Russell had to beat him in order to win. Wilt was dominant but not a winner and not clutch.
@@drchrisheidelberg so wait wait had multiple hall of Fame guards who's job it is to shoot to win but he choked? 😂😂 Missed FTs ain't choking because big men have always had difficulty with FTs. It's a biological disadvantage. You choose Wilt because you want to get to the finals whether you have a good team or not. Why do basketball heads hate that players need help? Jordan could never lead a squad to a ring. He needed Pippen's down hill style to open the floor for him. Biological disadvantage. Both are incredible Wilt is just a freak of nature 😂😂 he's automatically the greatest to ever play.
@@drchrisheidelberg you realize Wilt Chamberlain put down his scoring and focused more on assists later in his career, especially after his injury. You also forgot to mention he got injured with 5 minutes remaining in game 7 of the 1969 Finals. Also keep in mind Michael Jordan never referred to himself as the greatest of all time either. It was a title bestowed upon him by the public. Even though Michael Jordan is one of my favorite players of all time I still would have to give that title to Bill Russell. I'd also say that the same respect hasn't been given to him from the public either. People would still put a lot of other players ahead of Bill Russell forgetting the fact that not only did he win championships as a player, did so also as a player/ coach.
I give mj the edge because he competed against more teams and players. Bill Russell was only playing against 14 teams back then. I'm not knocking his greatness, but it was different levels of competition
@victorpulgar2396 And all the championships that Jordan won was because of Scottie and Rodman or Kukoc or Grant, etc. I never compare the best player by championships. It's ridiculous because its a team sport.
@@victorpulgar2396how can you say that? Russell was a 5x MVP! If that’s not the best player then what is? Why do you think the award was named after him?
@choiceismine because that's his argument? People were saying he can't be considered the best because he only has 2 rings compared to Michaels then 4. Well, by using their own logic against them, if Michael having more rings is what was separating them, then Bill Russell should be considered better than them both because he won 11 rings.
So, Jordan never claimed he was better than Russel. Wilt claimed (himself) was better than Russel. Problem is, Wilt approached Kareem, Magic,,Shaq, and Jordan to start the same argument. His rebuttal is that Bill Russell’s team success is unmatched so he should be the greatest player ever. The counter is he doesn’t have the individual success as MJ or Wilt. Wilt does not get enough love for being one of the greatest of all time. Maybe because people often saw him as goliah and nobody sympathizes with Goliath. He was an amazing talker. In modern times with all the media exposure he would have been even more famous
You don’t have to use titles as a measuring stick for Jordan’s greatness. People do it more than they have too. The eye test is first. The stats and other accolades “ offensively and defensively back it all up.
I love Wilt the stilt, but he's not in the conversation for THE GOAT. Bill Russell has 11 but there were only 8 teams in the league at that time. He couldn't have won that many from the 70s thru the 90s. Too much tough competition, nobody could win like that in those eras. The fact that Jordan won 6 in 8 years in that era is insane. I still believe Bill Russell would have been extremely successful in those eras but he wouldn't have 11 rings.
Bill Russell was a great team player, playing with Hall of Famers.Wilt revolutionized basketball. They changed rules to stop him.Chamberlain was not liked by refs or the league He was too good.Russell was a perfect match for the Celtics. He was a defensive specialist.Chamberlain was a defensive great who score could 50 points and grab 25 rebounds at will.
The hall of famers came from his era mostly from every team. Bill didn't have a hof player at every position. And some of them are in just because of the amount of championships. Check their numbers and you'll be like how did he get in.
Yes but he went to a superteam, and still didnt win.His inability to hit free throws cost his team wins. And i dont mean about one or 2 or 3 free throws.I mean under 40% for a series.Jerry west was the one who went against superteam all the time and he was the one who played as a superteam to win but injuries and not enough help cost him more championships.Jerry West is the best from that era.
@s0Lstar18 whats your point? Less teams means what exactly? Less competition? No. It means there were fewer spots for players. So the players on those teams had to be at a higher level to get a spot. It’s a statistical reality that if you expand the league, it becomes watered down. That’s the unequivocal reality of basic statistics. Its a function of having to accept lower caliber players to fill out the roster when you expand the number of teams. Follow? If you pick the best 100 players to fill out a 10 man roster, what happens to the quality of player when you now have to take the top 300 players to fill 30 teams? You think a guy like Steve Kerr or Paxson makes it on any one of those teams when Russell played? No chance. Watering down the league with more players doesn’t mean it’s more competitive, it just means you have a lot of bad teams and a lot of players that would’ve never made the league in the days of Russell and Wilt.
@s0Lstar18beyond that, it was more a comment on the ever changing metrics to decide the goat. 6 championships is why Jordan gets the nod over Wilt. But those same people will tell you 11 championships doesn’t mean Russell is better than Jordan. Personally I don’t think championships is the end all be all. Wilt had to play against one of the best teams in history that dominated during his tenure. What if Jordan had to play against the Lakers or Celts at their peak? Or even the Rockets during Hakeem’s peak? Guarantee you he doesn’t get 6 rings. So championships has a lot to do with luck and timing. Wilt gets knocked for the sole reason of having to play during the reign of the most dominant team in NBA history. Jordan came in at a time when there were good solid teams. But the juggernauts of the Lakers and Celtics had past. So he found a pocket of time where 3 peats were possible. No possible way the Bulls are even repeating if they played in the era of the best Lakers and Celts teams. Those guys were winners. And Jordan never got over on Bird. So championships are relevant, but they also require a lot of context. What’s more impressive, beating the Phoenix suns for a title or a prime Laker or Celtic team? That’s the easiest question you’ll hear all year.
@s0Lstar18 ok- that’s a fair argument- I agree- it is harder to win with more teams- I’m not sure that there’s necessarily more parity- but…with fewer teams, theoretically it’s more likely that one team in 10 could wind up stacked much more likely than one team in 30 could wind up stacked. So that’s a fair statement But only if you assume all else is equal. For that to be true, the 30 team league would have to have the same caliber of players as the 10 team league from the outset. That’s a big flaw here. Yes, in isolation, all else being equal, it’s harder to win a chip if you have more teams. But all else isn’t equal. A league w more teams has to drop their standards to let more players in. So the base level of excellence to enter into the 10 team league is higher than in the 30 team league. Not to mention, the rise of free agency killed parity in the league in the modern era. So I’ll grant that it is easier to win in a league among those top 10 teams bc there are fewer teams. But…the level of the 10 team league would’ve been higher from the outset. The entry level to win an NBA championship is already harder to win than with a watered down league based on the fact that so many players were excluded in that 10 team league from the get go. It’s a higher level of competition So yes, if you were one in ten teams it was easier to win a championship than in a team with 30 teams But that is only true if the caliber of players doesn’t drop in that 30 team league Which is impossible. Because there is no way the quality of players can’t drop when you expand the league to 3 times it’s size That make sense? That is, the base entry level was made harder by only allowing 10 teams from the outset That excludes hundreds of players from even having a shot an NBA championship right off the bat. Only having 10 teams makes the challenge of getting a title harder on the front end rather than on the back end. If you follow me. Your point about fewer black players is a fair one, but that was changing by the latter half of Russell’s career I think it’s hugely unfair to compare eras like that. Yes the talent is far better now than then. But I have to assume that the best players in older eras still rose to the top. Modern players are better without question because of modern training methods, nutrition and so on. So if you plant Russell in the modern era, he’s just not going to have the same effect. But if Bill Russell grows up in the modern era, with all the aforementioned benefits, he still becomes one of the best players of all time. Players of that era were all handicapped relative to today. It’s just not fair to make comparisons to eras. I think the best argument for you is the size of the talent pool. The modern era has an exponentially larger talent pool than of 60 years ago. So modern basketball players are scooping up more talent that would’ve been missed back then. But all those what ifs still serve to undercut players from earlier eras and it diminishes their accomplishments. They could only do what they could with what they were given. Russell was almost immaculate in his record. But again, I wasn’t really looking for this argument. My bigger point was that the championship argument is applied unevenly when we talk about the goat. It’s a relevant metric. But it shouldn’t be the only metric. By the way, I don’t think Russell is the goat. My goat is actually Jordan. But I never actually watched Russell and Wilt play. Very few people alive have. All that’s left are a few pieces of grainy footage. So my pick of Jordan is absolutely biased. There is no way I can adequately evaluate Wilt and Russell’s prowess outside of stats. So I can at least can appreciate that my own opinion is biased and is completely lacking in terms of evaluating players from the eras prior to the 70s. Everyone should acknowledge that to be the case.
@s0Lstar18not at all. Wilt was hands down the better scorer than Jordan. You don’t make any argument as to why hypotheticals aren’t relevant. You’re comparing disparate eras, the entire argument presumed hypotheticals. The entire premise is hypothetical. And you’re discounting hypotheticals? That’s ludicrously inconsistent. I’ll say it again. There is no question that some years and eras are weaker than others. Agreed? If that’s not the case, then your assumption is that all championship teams are equivalent. And they’re not. That’s why we debate which teams are the greatest, precisely because we know some title teams were better than others. No way Jordan’s Bulls title teams are coming out with 3 peats if he is playing against the Lakers and Celtics at their peaks. No chance. So it’s absolutely true that some championships come at times when their aren’t other dominant teams. Who was the Bulls rival in the 90s? No one. You can myopically assume it’s just because the Bulls were so great no one could match them. But the reality is that the 90s had a lot of good teams, but no great team to rival the Bulls. Some titles aren’t as impressive as others. The Bulls beat an aging Lakers with Magic having a torn hammy, with Vlade instead of Kareem, and I think either Scott or worthy was also injured for the entire series. I’m not saying the 90s was particularly weak, but it did lack the great teams of the 80s. My point is that Wilt came up against the juggernaut of the most dominant team in NBA history. Jordan didn’t have to face a dominant team like that. Well he did, but they lost to those teams until they aged out of contention. And you can’t dismiss hypotheticals when the entire argument is hypothetical. So if you want to dismiss hypotheticals, then Russell has 11 championships.
@s0Lstar18and it’s parity, not ‘parody’. A parody is a mockery via imitation. Careful throwing stones in that glass house of yours. I Guess this is where I emoji up Parody 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Sorry about that. As soon as he said, "he doesn't say anything about them", I knew it was Bill Russell.
Russel was a role player who avg 14 pts on a 14 team league with no free agency on an OG super team
Wilt put that man in his place on Bill Russell
The truth is the rules of professional basketball were changed to make it more difficult for Wilt, they were later changed to make it easier for Michael. Different era different game/style of play.
That eleven chips argument needs to be had….. it’s admirable but it’s not as dope as it seems…..
You’re high. Wilt did not have any dribbling skill much less Lebron’s and Shaq would have destroyed Wilt. lol. It was a different time.
@Marty13153 Wilt played guard for the globetrotters in the ABA, killed it. One dribble dunks from pretty much 15 feet out. We've all seen the video of him making hella 3 ball hook shots in a row. Wilt had a knack for making people look silly in arguments. One of the things people forget about Wilt, he was a really smart, well read guy

Jordan played with a lot of hall of famers as well. He didn't win it alone.
MJ played with one all star his whole career. Stop it.
If they wouldn’t hav changed the rules, alotta big men would’ve broken Wilts record.. David Robinson would hv been the first to break all his records
The hall of famers came from his era mostly from every team. Bill didn't have a hof player at every position. And some of them are in just because of the amount of championships. Check their numbers and you'll be like how did he get in.
The only player who could stop Wilt was Wilt himself.
Bill Russell beat him 8 times in the playoffs.

And Elgin Baylor and West. Both put up 40 ppg efforts against the Celtics and lost. Celtics was beyond super team imo
Wilt’s got a point- if the only metric for the GOAT is championships then there’s an unequivocal winner
@s0Lstar18 whats your point?
@s0Lstar18 ok- that’s a fair argument- I agree- it is harder to win with more teams- I’m not sure that there’s necessarily more parity-
but…with fewer teams, theoretically it’s more likely that one team in 10 could wind up stacked much more likely than one team in 30 could wind up stacked.
So that’s a fair statement
But only if you assume all else is equal.
It’s a higher level of competition
So yes, if you were one in ten teams it was easier to win a championship than in a team with 30 teams
But that is only true if the caliber of players doesn’t drop in that 30 team league
Which is impossible. Because there is no way the quality of players can’t drop when you expand the league to 3 times it’s size
That make sense?
That is, the base entry level was made harder by only allowing 10 teams from the outset
That excludes hundreds of players from even having a shot an NBA championship right off the bat.
Only having 10 teams makes the challenge of getting a title harder on the front end rather than on the back end.
If you follow me.
Your point about fewer black players is a fair one, but that was changing by the latter half of Russell’s career
I think it’s hugely unfair to compare eras like that.
@s0Lstar18not at all.
@s0Lstar18and it’s parity, not ‘parody’.
A parody is a mockery via imitation.
Careful throwing stones in that glass house of yours.
I Guess this is where I emoji up
Parody 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sorry about that.
But you went there first.
You make some good points.
I don’t see why a discussion about basketball can’t be a little more friendly without all the mocking.

Wilt said something to the effect of “just remember they changed the rules to make it easier on you but they changed the rules to make it harder on me.” Wilt got up and walked away.
I can’t say it changed Jordan’s mind entirely but it seemed to give him a respect for Wilt that he didn’t have before.

To me Wilt was probably the all time greatest athlete to walk the planet, however he worried too much about his critics which kept him from focusing on beating Russel and the Celtics.
That divided focus had him score 100 points in a game and lead the league in assists as a center but fail to win the championship.
