    British SAS is considered the mother of all SFs.
    Edit: India sends many of its officers routinely to UK and US as part of their career training. Likewise US and UK, mostly US troops train with Indian forces especially for high altitude training’s.
    Navy probably has the highest engagement in terms of training with Navies of other Nations.

    The initial Para Commandos started with the remnants of the 50th Parachute (Indian) Brigade during WWII. The brigade was disbanded after the Korean War. (Which the Indian 60 Parachute Field Ambulance) took part. Remnants of these were scattered into different infantry regiments as units with Airborne capabilities. In 1952, the Parachute Regiment was re-raised with the first three battalions and a new battalion being raised.
    In 1965, a Major, a paratrooper by the name of Maj. Megh Singh, founded the "Meghdoot force" with the elements of those Airborne units and from the Meghdoot force in 1965, the Para (SF) came to being. By then the Parachute Regiment has two elements, the Airborne units and the SF (Commando) units. Till 2002/2003 those SF battalions were known as Para Commandos, but after 2003, the nomenclature was changed into "Para SF" .

    India has 4 SF's for different sectors.
    1. SG aka special group under R&AW which is India s cia(manned generally by army & navy SF s) conducting operations which the Government may not wish to be associated.
    2.The army SF(unfortunately named para sf) and navy MARCOS for military special ops ;
    3. 51 & 52 Special Action Groups(manned by army)--51 for urban counter-terrorism ops & 52 for anti hijack ops.
    4. SFF aka special frontier force---(helmed by army sf primarily, manned tibetan refugees, and all anti china elements) made solely for dealing with china, trained by CIA initially.
    Special Protection Group aka SPG (manned by Central Armed Police Forces and Railway Protection Force) protects the PM. GARUDS of air force s more like protection troops for air installations and assets not SF but falsely tagged as one.

    Our army SF guys r brilliant and highly experienced; the amount of gallantry medals and unit citations they have earned and awarded every year, is incredible. I will say the colonialism was horrible for us but the one great outcome was the Indian Army and Navy. Britain gave good basis for modern warfare to us. India being at war constantly since independence gave us experience as well. The army SF was modelled after the british SAS indeed.
    The SF is yoked to parachute regiment in India is due to turf war. Many times SF tried to break away, one time they succeeded as well but parachute regiment ultimately managed to yoke them back in. Many SF vets have narrated the trials they were put thru by paratrooper higher ups. Sadly, army SF guys don't even have an SF regiment despite being extremely capable and experienced. To add insult to injury, all parachute units were recently given the SF title and there was immense push back! Don't know what ultimately happened. Indian Navy SF, MARCOS, r given the respect by Naval higher ups as they r treated like proper sf.
    Despite all this, Army SF is the best and far more experienced than MARCOS and despite not even having a regiment of their own, they r hardcore professionals.

      "otherwise parachute regiment is jus like any other infantry regiment of indian army"
      Not true. There is a 3 months probation for probies who want to be part of the Parachute Regiment. Pass rate is about 30%. Paras are Elites, not "regular infantry".
      PARA SF on the other hand is Special forces. Probation lasts 6 months and selection rate is about 10-20%.

    It was called the para commando in its initial days, it's no more called that, it's called para special forces now, most of the units within para sf are tier 2 units, certain units such as 9 para SF can be considered tier 1,it has its own signals and cyber intelligence/ warfare division, but special group(22SG) aka 4 vikas is the only true tier 1 unit that we know of, and thats a closely guarded secret, they carry out black ops , they come under india's external intelligence agency R&AW, there's no indian analog to royal marine commandos.
