  • Today we talk about luggage. You've heard of Away, you've heard of Tumi and Samsonite, and of course RIMOWA. The kingpin at the top in terms of pricing and luxury.
I've owned it for a year or two, and I have some thoughts.

I used to work at TSA, and I admired the Rimowa suitcases. The smash and dents on the aluminum luggage gives it its unique characteristic. What I liked about Rimiwa is, no matter how busted up it looked, the wheels always rolled smoothly.

I think older rimowa's had patina because they'd been used for many years. Unfortunately, LVMH realized this and saw they could decrease the durability and quality of the suitcase and pass it off as a patina. Sadly, older suitcases would have patina after 5-7 years of use whereas modern aluminum rimowas dent excessively after a few flights.

Try the Lufthansa aluminum cases. Made in Germany and even sturdier than Rimowa. Tested with their own airline pilots and flight attendants. Lufthansa and Rimowa used to have a collab but they ended it once Lufthansa figured they could make even better suitcases than them and sell them for half the price.

I own two, I love them. But they do come with mostly cons. There is no wiggle room, like at all. Because of that ive learned what will fit, what wont fit, and how to pack so I have room to bring something back if I do buy more things. Owning this has taught me what matters on a trip and what doesn't, you learn to not bring the entire world with you. It does dent, it does scratch, it does suck, but it is rigid and it is strong, once that first scratch comes in you'll find out how much you dont have to baby it. It's very expensive, and I know how and where it can make me a target, so knowing where youre traveling to also becomes something to keep in mind. Vegas, Miami, LA, Paris, London, all places I can go to and not worry. Same with anywhere I am simply driving to. But go anywhere more sketch like say Russia, India, South America and I have to leave this home and use a more simple Away bag. I got both of mine when they were $1000 or less, and at that price point, id recommend it, but at the current $1400+ price point I definitely dont.

These suit cases are mostly for people who travel frequently and lightly and think about practicality and safety especially if your someone who can afford 1500 dollar suit case your most likely going to have expensive clothes or items and the design comes in handy due to the wheels and great handle for those on the go

I bought my Rimowa luggages mainly, if not solely, because of their wheels. My Tumi ones still look good after over 100 flights (checked-in), but the Rimowas ride magically over carpet. I heard from friends that even luggages that cost 2-3 times the Rimowa did not glide that well.

Love my Tumi and Original Cabin in Aluminum. I travel a lot, about 150k actual miles. It's all about the wheels and with my mobility issue I prefer Rimowa over my Tumi. I almost use the bag as a walker and it floats over carpets/rugs. Did I tell you my hate for those surfaces. Can't wait for United SFOnto renovate their old terminal and get rid of the carpet. I frikcing hate Singapore Airport because of their cushy rug throughout the terminal. Appreciate your candor and I do not check in my original cabin, hence kinda protected but it's aluminum hence dents and scratches are to be expected.

Mark, you should have bought a polycarbonate Rimowa first. You'd be much happier. Although I like the look of the aluminum Rimowas, the weight, cost and inability to overstuff the case and still be able to close and secure it makes it a nice to look at but wouldn't want to buy one kinda case. My wife and I own 8 polycarbonate Rimowas (several are pretty old) and couldn't be happier with them. Our only regret is not getting a trunk sooner. They are awesome.

I have the RIMOWA carry-on in standard silver aluminum. A few scratches and dents for sure, but way less noticeable than your black one.
Also from what I understand, RIMOWA fanatics lean into the scratches and dents by making it a mindset that those scratches and dents just mean you travel more and actually use it. So much so that RIMOWA sells special graphic art stickers to slap on your suitcase to cover up scrapes and dents in kind of a hype beast way.
I definitely agree about no forgiveness in trying to cram stuff in it though.

Anyway, don't kid yourself; even a scuffed-up Rimowa case will sell for a pretty decent price on the used market, no matter how old it is. To each their own, but I find that people who are "broke" tend to quickly criticize how others spend their money, while people who have more tend to be happy for others when they get something they enjoy.

But if you're paying over $1000 for it, you'll want to tell yourself that the dents and scratches and scuffs look cool and is part of your "travel story". I've had my Tumi Latitude for yearsssss in 2 sizes and they're thrown around everywhere in long hauls and short hauls. Probably over 200 trips. And, I have never had to send them for repairs EVER. Only the corners are a little scuffed coz of the rubbery material, but the main body has barely any scratches at all. And zero dents. I think Rimowas are a poor purchase. You're really just paying for the style.

  • @d05wtt

Yeah…not gonna do a Rimowa. 1) you’re just drawing attention to yourself, especially if you’re in a foreign country. Criminals target people outwardly showing off their wealth. 2) hard suitcases don’t have any flex. They don’t stretch. You can’t add that extra pair of shoes or clothing. You’ll end up spending more money to buy another suitcase or luggage to fit all the stuff you bought while traveling. Rimowas are not practical at all. The more you travel, the more you’ll understand.

I promise you poor people are not spending $1500 on a suitcase. Especially one without a logo 🤣 They'd go Louis Vuitton and get a never full instead

Nah I work for a German company, most of us carry Rimowa. I like my tumi as well for cabin bag. My laptop will always be tumi. I'm on the road twice a months and 6 international trips a year. I need quality stuff. Most of my bags last 15 years. Tumi had lifetime and now Rimowa has lifetime. People that travel fee times a year like my kids carry away and samsonite. Solid products. Rimowa is for serious travelers and people who don't care about 2-4K on luggage.

@@RoSharma serious travelers wont choose a carry on as heavy as 4,5kg. They choose the Rimowa essential sleeve or essential maybe for their carryon.
