@@KOHoxton Idk exactly how it happens at FromSoft, but I believe they develop their worlds very carefully, as worldbuilder authors do in fantasy books. Most of the actual lore is not in the game, but in their heads. The little that goes in the game is through scattered information and the rest is up to our interpretation. "I tell worlds, not stories".
So everything that happens in Demon's souls, is because god hated people spamming spells.
The Old One was born from people corner camping Firestorm over and over again.

Would also like to make a slight correction on the point at 6:48 - the English says a "malicious force" left behind the Northern Regalia, but the Japanese translation more accurately posits that it was left behind "due to malice", the implication being that man might have favoured a sword that scales with their good or evil.

It always amazes me how much a single nuance lost in transition can completely change the way you understand a story
Any of ya'll notice that the magic circle imagery in the Nexus only appears on the bottom half of it? The "chaotic" side of the Nexus while the top half, the "lawful" side has none. And the statue on the chaotic side is a sad woman as if Miyazaki is saying chaos is sad while the lawful side features someone righteous looking.
Yes, chaos creates instability you become unable to build or make sense of anything.
The order there is not only safety but freedom, as you can actually act with meaning

When my Crest fallen warrior died in my hub I actually cried a little.. I would talk to him after every successful mission to update him because he was the first npc I had met. Then, he stopped wanting to talk to me, which I thought was strange but didn't pay too much attention to. After my next successful mission.. He'd passed and dropped his storied hero soul. I stood there staring at it for 10 minutes.. Gave a bow emote, collected it and put it into my storage. I am now NG+7 and even though he respawns, I have kept his soul in my storage since my first playthrough. I have also never talked to him again because I don't want him to disappear. If that doesn't show the type of impact an npc has on a player in a souls series, idk what will. Only today have I found out his name is just "Crest fallen knight" because I have never talked to him since that day. Man I love this game.
I killed him the first time I went to the Nexus and later consumed his Soul to Level up.

The demons are, to the Old One, a lot like digestive bacteria are to us.
Demon's souls is great in so many ways, it has an amazing backstory from it's beginning's to it's launch. I don't know if we would even have the souls games if it weren't for Miyazaki deciding on a career change at the exact moment that he did.
The ‘Lands Between’ has this theme of the fog, even though it’s rarely mentioned. I wonder if there is possibly a connection between the series, assuming of course, the fog only is made in passing to possibly keep them separate in the mind of Miyazaki himself, and therefore, the player’s

Elden Ring is the way to lose your soul and Vaati is the way to regain it.
Clarity being linked to the soul, sheds a lot of light on the insanity theme on the knowledge found by seath on dark souls 1. I know its a spiritual successor, but nonetheless it fits way too perfectly. I always thought that intelligence improving your magica, was associated with your capacity for research, but that isn't it after all.

This is the main reason that I was excited for the remake. I love demon's souls, more than any other souls game easily, but due to lack of info on it, lore videos have been really lacking.

This is crazy: the first time I ever feel an urge to learn about Demon's Souls lore and seek out a beginner's guide, I find out that none other than VaatiVidya has made one for just this purpose ONLY THE DAY BEFORE!
Been watching this channel almost everyday since your first Demon's Souls videos. I loved the games since 2010 but your videos make me love my favorite game franchise even more. Thank you for all your hardwork and dedication to studying and deciphering the lore of these games. You , along with the Souls series as a whole have taught me a lot about life through a video game and have gotten me through some of the hardest times in youth and young adult years.

Amazing work as always, Vaati. Words can not describe how bad I wish to play this beloved, and not to mention, beautifully remade version of a nostalgic masterpiece, but I do not see me owning a PS5 for a long time. Sadly, it's not coming to PC either.

I love Demon’s Souls and I think it might be my favourite FromSoftware game. It’s upsetting but maybe also poetic that it be locked away on a single platform, inaccessible to many whom would fall deeply into the void and be consumed by it’s intoxicating character.

This is a good lore video to watch in preparation for a Demon’s Souls playthrough. It gives valuable context for why you’re on this adventure, and doesn’t spoil the story.
None of this is really explained in the game itself, like Jeremy said, this is a good video to watch BEFORE you play the game.
@@Brawndo2008 For real. This game's themes are more compelling to me than I ever realised. Contextualising world tendency and the colourless deep fog (it really does make sense why it's "colourless" now!) as the world itself transforming according to our transforming _perceptions of it._ Demon's Souls isn't prototypically Souls-like, it's ARCHETYPICALLY Souls-like. I wish I had the opportunity to play this game for the first time, understanding these things as I do now.

I am so excited for these videos. I was heavy into Demons Souls back in the day, but the lore was never dived into by the community, not this deeply and cohesively anyways. This is what I desired so strongly back then. I never cared about Darks Souls, never really even got into it after the first one, but I love love love Demons Souls. Can't wait for these videos. Can't wait to play it some day.

Funny enough... I think I am getting vibes that Demon Souls actually is the answer to the whole Dark Souls franchise. As such, I will be researching this deeply.
To say that there is such a thing as the answer to the whole franchise is quite an assumption. I wish there was one, but there isn't. Just look at DS 3's development. Things being cut or shuffled around at the last moment. It really doesn't go as deep as we'd like. Besides, looking at say, DS 1, there isn't much to answer. The story is pretty much self-contained, with a few murky spots to keep the intrigue.
@@nikitas1841 it is quite an assumption. Also, this will be a long post so brace yourself.
Also, DS 1 has the most mystery surrounding it. There are too many things that are needed to be answered. The appearance of the Serpents, Manus and Oolacile, the Fall of Izalith, the Abandoned Anor Londo, Nito and Pinwheel, the Conspiracy of Rebellion, Havel and his Knights, Ash Lake and the Last Scaled Dragon, Seathe and the Firekeepers, and finally, the Dark Ending with numerous Serpents.
These topics are not just intriguing but integral to the story of the whole franchise. Demon Souls is the answer, for me, because there are too many correlating evidences between universes. Let me give you one answer that I finally realized.
Fog Gates. They had been always seen before fighting powerful beings. It has been an assumption that all of it are generated when you are fighting a boss. I had made 2 Hypothesis.
Hypothesis 1: Fog Gates are not actually there because powerful beings are behind it. It is actually formed around beings with significant destiny. The ones that can change the Fate of the World.
Exhibit A. The Moonlight Butterfly
It is integral to the Witch Questline. You will never see the summon sign in New Londo if you didn't kill the Butterfly. Even if you kill the Four Kings, the Witch's set won't be seen on the cliff unless you kill the Butterfly.
Exhibit B. The Capra Demon
The demon is an anomaly to the lower city. Why is there a demon in that area? More importantly, it held the Sewer Key. Only one answer is available. That Capra demon is sane. He hold the key because the sewer there is his home, along with his cohorts, the Butchers. No one can ever enter the Sewer without killing him first. Even the Master Key cannot be used.
Hypothesis 2: The fog gates lead to a parallel universe. It has been known that the timeline in Lordran is messed up, allowing summon signs to be used.
Exhibit A. The first fog gate of Sen's Fortress
It is quite confusing when you enter that fog gate and then see that the balls are rolling to another side. No one just made a quick switch and pushed the lever towards our way. No Lizardmen in that area too. Unless, the player is actually stepping into another universe in which the ball is already rolling that way.
As you can see, I made logical answers using Demon Souls as my frame. This is like FNAF. Using the books to solve the game. Anyway, this is fun for me and I am actually getting answers to my speculation. I will be brawling with in the Vaati discord again.
@@vhalrougelarfouxe About DS 1's mysteries: that's exactly the thing. You assume they need to be answered, but they don't really. Not all of them. Some of those you mentioned have solid theories explaining them, others don't, and never will, as there just isn't enough information. And that's fine. That's how the story is structured.
About your theories: no offence, but that's mostly grasping at straws rather than logic.
Don't listen to me though, have fun doing your thing. It's just that as years go by, there is less and less actual connections in the lore to discover, and more and more grasping at straws, overthinking things and making stuff up going on, and I guess I'm just over all of that.

I had been researching this alone for years already and looking at interpretations of others. Its really a fun time for me.

Almost everything in the world respawns. Why is it that killing a boss behind a fog wall will permanently removes the entity? For that matter, is there lore explaining why do some things in the main world permanently despawn after death?

Been watching this channel ever since I was 12, my best friend bought me the Dark Souls: Prepare to die edition Box as a surprise for my birthday and we were completely engulfed in the theme and gameplay of it all. We took turns playing whenever we had difficulties or were burned out and we just enjoyed it. I was very curious about the Lore and I found this channel. I played the original Demon's Souls over 10 years ago, and I couldn't make heads or tails of the story and didn't understand a bit about the mosters I fought or why they had weird names. After a decade, I finally understand the general premise. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.
