Dead Sea Scrolls - The War Scroll - Apocalyptic War Against Belial and the Sons of Darkness

  • The War Between Good and Evil has become a fundamental aspect of Apocalypticism - from the visions of the End in the New Testament Book of Revelation to contemporary Pop Culture Marvel Movies. This titanic, cosmic struggle reaches back to the turn of the Common Era and finds its most early mature expression in the War Literature found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Here we find a description of the final battle between the forces of light led by the angel Michael and those of darkness led by the demonic general Belial. In this episode we turn to the famed War Scroll with its ceremonial weapons, quasi-Roman cosmic warfare and the gateway to the final Messianic Era.

    WAR 'What is it good for?' SCROLLS! And a great overview of one of the most evocative, in my opinion, pieces of religious literature from ancient times. I am inclined to agree with the notion of the lengthy detailed descriptions as a kind of magical formula, I imagine that maybe they would recite from memory and in a sense conjure the coming events, at least in the hearts and minds of the community. That's the thing with this Apocalyptic stuff it's very inspiring, but look at the outcomes!

      @Jason I tend to agree.
      But I also see it at work everywhere at varying scales. It is in the sweet prayers that parents say with their children every night before bed. It is in the stories we tell ourselves about our governments and economies. And everything in between. And the more there is at stake, the more power the messages are infused with, the more we "believe" them in spite of the evidence.
      This isn't just something religious weirdos did 2000 years ago.
      We all do it every day.

Having been stunned by it, I deeply appreciate the guidance of which viable and attainable sources to avail of for the day to day person, and which are cost prohibitive as you eloquently put it, and which one you wisely noted would take “decades” to study! There always have been many gods, every spiritual being is by definition a god, the word 'god' simply means 'spiritual being'. Monotheism is not the notion of only knowing a single god, but is the exclusive worship of that one god who is most high.
      The ancient 'gods' of the earliest Babylonian and Semitic religions are based on physical beings, they are not proper gods. They tend to be similar in appearance across cultures. Giants with pale skin, blue eyes and white/blonde hair, come from the sky, bring technology and knowledge, wage war and blow shit up, and now are all washed away from the surface of the earth.
      The old 'gods' are basically momento mori of the Nephilim, an ante-deluvian world lost in time but the memory has survived the waters and developed from there into several religions. Much knowledge has been lost due to calamity, but basic things like language and writing were preserved and used to preserve what little knowledge they still had.
      Mind yourself, the best of pyramids are the old pyramids, because they were built by a different culture, a different people. The best of Inca cities are the old cities, because they were built by a different culture, a different people. All over the world there are echoes of a great flood, and of gods and giants, and then history came into being with its recordings of legends and stories passed on for centuries through storytelling, theatre, song and dance, imagery and sculpting, through every form of artistic expression possible.
      As such try to read between the lines, there is something more real behind every story if you can separate tradition from truth.

      Notice the way these myths portray the CONQUERING of the primordials. It's A CLEAR euphemism for the perversion and censorship of mesopotamian era artifacts, concepts, religion, and they were all PROTO religions. PRIMORDIAL occurrences of religion in humankind, relatively speaking, which, these writings IN HEBREW, easily hint at Victor's rights of rewriting the narrative, especially concerning the final convergence from things like mesopotamian hermeticism, zoroastrianism, babylonian pantheism, canaanite monopluralism- to early jewish mysticism from the time of Moses. The Jewish ONCE WORSHIPPED MULTIPLE GODS from the mesopotamian era, then eventually just 3. 1 - Ba'al (Ba'al Hadad turned early jewish mysticism), 2 - Asherah (represents the divine feminine energy, physical creation, the womb of creation and the source of creative expression of the prime emination), and 3 - Yahweh, essentially a God of War and sometimes even associated with storms and thunder like Ba'al Hadad once was. Their prime emination was once called El-Elyon, the sons of El-Elyon took the mantle at the coming of the new age, and thus, the introspections ("children") of El-Elyon and Asherah were the ones debated to have 'fought' each other for the monotheistic top down dominance, essentially an idea of succession from the primordial God of the heavens and the earth El Elyon, to eventually just Asherah, Ba'al, and Yahweh left in proto abrahamic worship, in which there were IDOLS made of all three. Eventually all that would remain after the FINAL convergence to the form of Judaism we pretty much know today, is Yahweh, YHVH, bastardized later into Jehovah JHVH by latinized clerics. So, yes, lots of these battles were actually metaphor for believers fighting each other, and, the writers of history in your case, on the timeline, they were practicing their unchallenged mesopotamian belief one moment, and belief in a single monotheistic God they'd merged all other entities (which the proto-abrahamics once worshipped themselves) into the very next moment.

    I give a metaphoric interpretation to the War Scroll as a Gnostic theme: representing inner spiritual transformation over the human nature of the Kittims. Followers are witnessing daily and experiencing the triumph of evil people and deeds over good people and actions, and this War Scroll tells them that sure they succeed now, but eventually good spiritual divine transformation will eventually and always triumph.

      @@joshsimpson10 Mystery religions are those about the individual changing: something is read, said; something is seen (symbol); and something is done. All for the purpose of the person transforming the old self into a newer self. The experience is outside the brain's thought making process (words, ideas, beliefs, values etc.), and is another process, Paul calls it the Third Heaven. One does not know what happens in this other state, but only sees the impact of the changes to one's neural patterns and actions. Mythology is the reader, listener going through these changes. The stories about him and her.

So, Ancient writers had no understanding of force and because everything is local and what is more local than a human being. So, all these forces and concepts took on body forms as for example, they did not know the origin and causes of wind! People always love answers, even if they are wrong. They want rigid ideas as answers!

    Another great video. Ive always found it fascinating how an insult for a layabout bum evolves into a (at least somewhat competent, given how much resistance "he" provided) general in the form of Belial. It is reminiscent of your well done video on Sheol, wherein it evolves into the concept of "hell". There are many other instances throughout esoteric literature where a simple idea or rudimentary belief develops into an elaborate cosmological smorgasbord of theatrical proportions. From your studies, or based on your opinion, are there any instances of this "evolution" being the direct result of a single event or a single moment in time, instead of (at least based on my understanding) slow adaptation to cultural needs over time?

    I really dig how you approach this subject and your conclusions in the end. So many times that I heard this rhetoric of God saving some one or something at the last moment that never came thrue. It seems to me that problem of misunderstanding lays at the fact that when people try to understand heavenly visions so often they compare them with their own circumstances even though this perticular vision might not be about them or even their time.

    I just read the book: JOSEPHUS, THE BIBLE, AND HISTORY by Louis H. Feldman & Gohei Hata. AWESOME!!!! In this great book it states Josephus (Antiquities XIII-XVII) used not only historical Hebrew & Aramaic sources but also Greek writers (Homer, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Nicholas of Damascus, and 55 other Greek historical writers. "Nicholas of Damascus" was a Philosopher & the tutor for Antony & Cleopatras children, also a close friend to Ceasaer Augustus and was King Herod the Greats' chief advisor, travel companion and Herods autobiographical historian. This Nicholas of Damascus also wrote 144 world "universal" history books (in Greek) (Nicolaus' Histories) and The Life of Augustus. His histories are comparable to Histories of Ephorus (the "first" Universal Historian). Josephus used a lot of Nicolaus' continuation histories for Israel. So my point is maybe the real history of the early Qumran Essenes is to be found in Nicolaus' history vs Josephus.
