My only real complaint about Venus is that she doesn’t have a unique color. They just gave her light blue, when it could’ve been white or yellow or even pink.
Funnily enough all those colours have been used by other female turtle characters since. In the comics based on the 80s show April got turned into a turtle and she wore white, and in the newer comics they've introduced a couple new female turtles who favor yellow and pink.
That weird time history where people behind power rangers took a spin on the ninja turtles, sounded good on paper, but with a rather questionable execution.
I think part of what killed this was they didn't understand what defined the TMNT as characters or the themes of their world, they just saw it as Power Rangers but they're not human, and couldn't even get that right.
Louis did a HOPR on in space and that he did mention the next mutation that he and PR fans has the opposite opinion on shell shocked. that it was terrible being that GM did mention Scott McNeal and Garry chalk was part of the cast. Next mutation was filmed in Canada so they had Canadian actors available as a pose to the LA and NY types which power rangers was a LA show
The worst part about the retcon is that, they didn't need to make the main 4 turtles unrelated, they could still be brothers while having Venus unrelated to them. Just say she was mutated by Shredded or something, introduce her as a villain at first that later becomes good; Saban literally did that exact storyline for the green ranger 5 years prior to Next Mutation.
Just to address the "I didn't see anyone talk about show in deep length" there's actually a youtuber, Phelan Porteus, former Channel Awesome member and huge Turtle fan, who has a video series when he reviewed each episode of Next Mutation in details while also make fun of it, especially when it comes the edits in UK version. Just wanted to shout out him.

Looking at the situation as a whole, a rule against adding a fifth turtle was wise as it would involve rewriting the turtles' entire back story and throw the balance off, as was ultimately demonstrated with Venus and how convoluted her own backstory was. This is reminiscent in some respects to how the writers of the 2016 Powerpuff Girls series created a new Powerpuff Girl named Bliss, who was actually the very first Powerpuff Girl, and caused their own backstory to be rewritten in an equally convoluted way.
What was even her backstory? She was a supergirl made by the professor but she had a temper problem and just vanished after a huge meltdown? Even though Professor made the girls on accident ,was thrilled his experiment actually worked, and was startled when he found out they had powers?
They should have made her a newbie to the group with either limited or nonexistent combat experience instead. It’d also fit the theme of the TMNT being older, as they would have to act more responsibly towards the new member.
@@fleebogazeezig6642 That would make sense, like they find out the mutagen is still being made, and a turtle got into it a few years ago (or even some time after the four did) so shes like a little sister to the gang and learns from them. Or even if they made he a kid turtle, they could tell her 'no stay back, its too dangerous for you, kiddo' and she occasionally saves them from whatever danger, and she'd be excited to learn each of their different techniques
I think Venus gets such a bad wrap because of The Next Mutation being a terrible show, she's actually one of the better parts of it, even if her backstory is needlessly clunky. I think they should focused on the fish out of water aspect as she slowly starts connecting with her new family (and get rid of the creepy horny overtones). Also I always liked the idea of her, Slash and Metalhead forming their own team.
And your fan idea can’t even happen in the IDW comics where she got heavily reimagined as a powerful psychic and astral planes walking Frankenstein’s Monster, because of what’s happened to Slash and MetalHead in those comics.😩

If there’s one thing that’s great about the Next Mutation… it’s that Phelous did a retrospective that gave us great Ninja Turtles memes like, “A New Way” or “Michelangelo is Brain Dead”, or “What a Swinger”.
I discovered Venus in a coloring book, that for some reason actually had a dramatic narrative that depicted her backstory with realistic drawings. Had no idea the show existed until WAYY later, and I was amazed to find out she was in a show.
Krystal unfortunately was more a case of a character being completely repurposed when they were supposed to be more. Venus was made to be the 5th turtle but just ended up being the subject of a ton of horny jokes.
@@HylianWindRider When Miyamoto wanted it to become a star fox game Rare were just gonna remove her and make the game about Fox since the male lead character they already had could be repurposed to be him. But he insisted Krystal stay in it and just be reworked into a new Star Fox character. How it ended up impacting her involvement in the game/story thereafter was considerably worse imo than if it had remained it's own game but y'know is how it is.
i actully think every single chaacter can be reworked to be fucking amazing Chung I: this dude found a turtle in chinatown and took her home to china. When she started mutating he was like “cool ill train her”. At some point he met splinter in the dream world and they became dream pals. Andre: as a youngman he was hit in the face with a canister that fell out of a truck permenantly blinding him. This is the same canister that mutated our heroes. Years later he became friends with splinter unaware of his true nature. At some point he figured out that splinter wasnt exactly normal. He said nothing because the revelation changed nothing. Venus: mei pei chi is the turtle that chung I found. After his tragic death she packed her bags and sold everything she could safely and emotionally part with in order to afford a trip from china to new york wearing a cloak that hid her face in order to avoid questions and scrutiny. Once in new york she found one of the turtles and followed him home where she was allowed to stay for as long as she needed. intially disapointed upon learning that none of the turtles were related she was quickly cheered up upon hearing that they saw each other as family regardless. at some point she was affectionately nicknamed venus di milo (venus for short) after bringing a statue home. She’s more focused on the mystic side of martial arts allowing her chi to flow through her strengthening her body and mind. She also utilizes magic. Both her chi and her magic do her credit but she still has difficulty with them sometimes resulting in doubts especially after she was temporarily weakened by the staff of bukai. Shes also somewhat proficient with chemical weaponry such as smoke bombs, glue bombs, bombs that perfectly replicate michealangelo’s breath, and itching powder. She came to rely on these a bit more after being weakened by the staff of bukai. Shes also knowedgeable in the feild of earth medicine and this combined with her magic and chi make her the teams unofficial healer and making her a good oartner for donnie when an antidote for something is required. Shes also highly skilled with various wrapons including swords, daggers, sharp fan thing, blowgun and shurikens. She and donatello do have a magic vs science rivalry at times, she thinks raph’s a bit too hotheaded and dickish, she questions leos leadership at times, and she wishes mikey would take things more seriously but she doesnt look down on them for any of this. She also has some difficulty with the english language but the other turtles are somewhat patient regarding this. Dragonlord: once an evil tyrant before humans locked him away in a magic mirror he escaped centuries later by finding a way into the dream world. He caotured splinter and killed chung I. When the turtles rescued splinter he hitched a ride with them to the waking world. He has a note worthy appetite threatening to eat any life form that inconveniences him. He has the ability to reach into the past and grab something but he doesnt use this ability often because anything he takes has to put back when hes done with it due to timeline shit. He breaths fire too and is somewhat handy with a sword. Hes also knowledgeable on basketball for some reason wick: the starscream to dragonlords megatron. he has his moments but he mostly fucks up all the time. And when he isnt fuckin up hes trying to take over. His appetite is also pretty substantial. he eats any life form he comes across but also enjoys celery. Hes a fan of michelangelos radio show and has considered switching sides for this very reason but ultimately being a bad guy is more beneficial for him. One time he created a super soldier potion that allowed him to usurp drsgonlord but this victory wasnt permanant. Purple luietenent: the bob to dragonlord’s joker. Not much personality to speak of but his loyalty is unmatched. Dr queeze: a jack of all trades scientist who isnt taken seriously by any feild. He works for drgonlord under constant threat of being eaten if he fails. He has several cybernetic implants that enable him to access the internet and hack into shit. He’s also an engineer and an arms maker inventing countless weapons and machines. Silver: a yeti, the last of his kind. he lives in newyork where he developed a taste for bananas. He steals money that he can never spend and artifacts that he can never sell. possibly to cope with being the only one yeti left. pays his henchnen pretty well though. He also once made use of a computer program that mind controls people. (Some ugly scientist guy sold it to him). the turtles are hesitant to kill him because although he has shown a capacity and willingness to kill them they also know hes the last of his kind. Causing the extinction of an intelligent race isnt something you just do lightly. Vam-mi: she was once defeated by chung I and her heart subsequently removed. sometime later shes awoken by her loyal vampire minions chi chu and bing. The trio does the usual vampire shit killing people either through drinking their blood or consuming their life force. Whatever theyre in the mood for. Vam-mi’s primary motivation is to get her heart back so that she can feel whole again. Chi chu and Bing. Chi chu is loyal and strategic, bing is loyal and wise. After vam-mi’s death her minions stick around to get revenge and reek whatever havoc they want in the meantime. Bonesteel: a monster hunter and tracker. When hes not hunting monsters he’s hunting endangered species because its the only money making skill he has. Hes not much when it comes to intelligence but he makes up for it with skill strategy and cunning. not only foes he sell the monsters and animals he captures but hes also been known to eat them on occasion. Hes also alluded to having eaten vampire heart before so cannibalism might not be out of the question considering vampires look enough like humans. Oh and hes scared shitless of gorillas. the unknowables: a pathetic gang of ass hats led by heavy duke that control a small part of the city. Bonesteel teamed up with them once and they got captured almost instantly. The rank: dragonlord’s army. Thats about it. Although some of them do defect for various reasons. Some aren’t comfortable eating intellogent life forms, some don’t think he’s a fit leader, some have grown to like michelangelo after listening to his radioshow. Turtle clones: created by dr queeze to be the perfect blend of slave, soldier and cattle for the dragons. they’re useful for fighting battles and doing basic work but sometimes theyre killed and eaten sometimes as punishment for failure sometimes just for the hell of it and sometimes when the dragons need to “stock up”. at first the turtles try to save them because mutant turtle solidariy oe something but it doesnt end well. They’re basically mindless drones under the control of the dragons and thus completely unreachable. Whenever the real turtles have to kill these guys they don’t handle it very well not only due to reasons aforementioned but also due to the visual sikililarities to their brothers and sister. Splinter clones: i got nothin, this wasn’t even a thing in the show i just think this wouldve been a fun idea. Maybe even bring the rat king in just for the hell of it.

One thing I think is important to note, and the main reason I believe co-creator Peter Laird despised Venus, is that he did change his mind about a fifth Turtle, but the one that the creators wanted to add was a boy named Kirby, named after Laird and Eastman's personal hero and comics legend Jack Kirby who had recently passed away at the time. Venus (rather unfairly) essentially became an avatar for everything wrong with the show.
The show's development actually began as a 4th movie also titled "TMNT IV: The Next Mutation" which would actually explore the turtles and Splinter going through a second mutation, affecting each of them with different looks and abilities. (Donatello would've gained telepathic/telekinetic powers but at the cost of losing his eye sight and would've worn goggles. And got a metal bo staff, Leonardo had the ability to turn his skin into metal chrome, Michelangelo would've turned into a human and allowed him to be accepted into society., Raphael had the ability to morph into "Raptor-Raph" with long claws, and monstrous teeth, and Splinter had the power to become a muscular wererat creature in order to fight along with his sons.) Unfortunately that script didn't go well. (But elements would be recycled in the later "Red Sky" era of the 87 show.) And a new pitch was written titled "The Foot Walks Again" where instead the Turtles travel into a dark dystopian dimension. (I.e. Back to the Future 2 or Super Mario '93.) Which would've featured an evil hypersexualized April O'Neil, "Kasey" Jones having electrical taser-hands, and a firth turtle named "Kirby" (inspired by Jack Kirby.) Who was a rougher and violent survivalist in this dimension. The Foot Soldiers have also evolved with high-tech guns led by a Cyber-Foot leader "Fang". The Shredder is also very alive in this dimension. And the story would've taken elements of the City At War comic but with more futuristic tech gear with the hopes of making an even darker tone than the original 1990 film. However, that script went through many revisions, and rewrites from other writers and Eastman and Laird disliked more and more. Also, the trilogy's studio, New Line Cinema, was no longer attached and would've been distributed by TriMark Pictures. (The very small budget studio that brought us the Leprechaun and Warlock movies.) And this ambitious effects heavy movie could've ended up feeling like their previous films like Cyborg 2 (1993) and very unlikely Jim Henson's Creature Shop would've been able to return.
Fun fact: Power Rangers in Space (the season with Turtles crossover) actually had very small budget. It was meant to be the final season as the previous one, was a failure. It had low budget, but a productio that actually cared.
I mean, they gotta go all out for a franchise that already succeededaly attract fans and made millions. It’s basically their only Shot just like how the world is at stakes during the events of space. They don’t want the series to die nor the franchise that they already built. Saban abandoned all of their failed creations in the very end but not Power rangers. As Power Rangers is their most successful creations that used Super Sentai as their base and incorporated it for Western Audience. They might have sold the franchise twice to save it from budget cost but they really cared about it. It’s really bad when it is so successful for its time or Really good when things aren’t going well.
Mmm it’s crazy how Venus herself wasn’t actually the issue 😅 it was the writing, the inconsistency of Venus’ knowledge of 90’s slang and her powers (and the fact that in that universe shinobi aren’t ninja…even though it means ninja😅) but yeah thanks to a certain cool Canadian youtuber I follow i know TOO MUCH about this show and I haven’t personally watched it 😂
Not both of them. Kevin actually liked Venus and even brought her to the IDW comics. Plus, the showrunners for Rise of the TMNT MAY have planned to incorporate her (they had plans to give the Turtles two sisters but the series was cut short so they had to drop the plan. They never said if the sisters were new characters or versions of Venus and/or Jennika, througth).
@juanrisa945 to be fair, I think Eastman likes all the Ninja Turtles adaptations he seemed more like the easygoing member of the duo. Where as Laird pretty much hated any adaptation of the Ninja Turtles except for the 2003 series and 2007 movie he was more the cynical old man of two.

Maybe is just me but I always find Venus de Milo extremely Underrated and there's so much potential they can use her and out of all the TMNT Characters they brought back or never Venus saddles my since she was left out biting the Dust, I'm so happy and excited after Years of waiting that is happening with a new Reconstruction and makes it more exciting to the Future Going Forward, the Wait is finally Over and it's Worth It.
I remember seeing this show on Netflix and having a hard time trying to get myself to watch the first episode and not getting through it. I’m not surprised that we haven’t had a live action TMNT tv show since this one.
All I think of when it comes to this series is the Phelous reviews. The highlights being, Leonardo’s “NEW WAY” and Michelangelo’s brain damaged moments. 😂
I just looked up the voice actors for the turtles, and apparently 3/4 of them appeared in Lego Ninjago and the voice actor for Ralph voice Rantaro Kiyama in Beyblade burst S1-2
I think Venus could have been better if they'd instead of giving her magic focused her martial arts on internal techniques, with a more defensive and spiritual basis than the boys' offensive focus. Her weapon could have been the war fans, which would fit that aspect. Her personality, meanwhile, could have been much more timid and inexperienced, though I'm not sure. Just *something* to differentiate from the other Turtles. Funny thing is, I think there are enough "fifth" turtles now to be able to make a larger team than the main group: Kirby, Venus, Jennika, Slash, and Metalhead. Yeah, Kirby was never actually used, but the point still stands.
Phelous did an entire series of videos reviewing every episode of the show, if you want to see a crazy person do a deep dive and go over insane details.
So I actually remember when this aired as a kid, and the really weird thing is before it aired back when it was just showing teasers which were basically commercials of just text telling us that the show was happening. It’s specifically said that it was a continuation of the animated series but then when they showed aired, we all noticed the sets from the movie and were thoroughly confused.

Actually The Next Mutation has 2 (and a half) theme songs the "We're fantastic, never panic" theme song is the new theme song that aired on the new DVDs and streaming services. The old theme song (which tells you out the Turtles origin) was the one they used on Fox Kids and VHS releases and the original closing credits had a rap style. The UK version of the old intro was known as Hero Turtles the Next Mutation.

That’s an amazing point. The voices for the turtles (a bunch of voices I loved from Canadian cartoons and Canadian dubbed anime back in the day) would’ve been if they switched. But I probably would’ve had Mikey’s voice play Leonardo, that actor tends to play leaders in shows because of how good he is at it (the late great Kirby Marrow). But you’re absolutely right with the switches you made. Would’ve been perfect

You know Phelous actually did cover every episode of Next Mutation fairly in depth and pointed out it's many many MANY shortcomings but I appreciate Xaiver here trying to give this as fair a shot as possible actually able to find things he liked about the series (at least enjoying Bonesteel and the energy the actors had in the suits) while pointing out obviously the butt load of problems next mutation had. A couple of things he didn't point out due to either not knowing or not having time to get into it. 1. The theme song he talked about was actually the second Next Mutation theme song. For... I have no idea what the actual reason was but the original theme song when the show came to DVD and ran on other networks was altered into the version that Xavier talked about. But the version that first came out (that I heard as I did watch a bit of the show when it came out... not that much but I did see the finale of all things weirdly enough) actually DID explain the premise of the series a lot better and was much more about the team... granted it still wasn't that good but at least it talked about the team (oddly enough the original theme song said "teenage brothers" so yeah guess they didn't get the memo about the retcon this series would have) and what they did before talking about Venus and "now there's five" before just constantly saying Ninja turtles. I find "now there's five" especially funny because in the 2003 series the first theme songs made a specific point to always jsut count the FOUR ninja turtles like it was Peter Laird trying to subconciously say "no there have only ever been four don't try and think otherwise." 2. As Xavier poitned out with the easter eggs and look it's clear someone wanted to have this appear as the next part of the live action series not the cartoon universe but then... why is the tone much more juvenile and kiddified especially with all the wonky sound effects and the turtles acting even more bratty and juvenille then they had been in even the 80's cartoon series? Sans obviously trying to make the four less mature to try and prop up Venus, I think the rationale at the time was someone in the MIDDLE of production realizing "you know maybe we should try and play up the comedy instead of the seriousness more of the scenario" thus making it this far more wonky ridiculous affair. Like it feels like there was someone who originally wanted to take this more seriously but that got dropped pretty quick within the actual narrative of the show with things getting more and more weak and stupid the longer it went on. I am sure there probably is an interesting back story on this series... I'm not sure who would want ot read it though considering how much this series sucks but still interesting. Still major props for managing to get through all of this in one sitting Xavier and actually not just fully spitting on it. Like I've seen other video reviewers talk about it (TV Trash, TJ TV, again Phelous) think you're the only one who could commit to pointing out why it didn't work without the full on hate storm that... I do feel is warranted here but again appreciate getting something different done here.
I’m sure it’s been said, but the “dance track” theme song is a replacement. The original theme is a rap (“Four green turtles! Heard the news? Got mutated by an ooze!” And ends with the riff “Na na na na Ninja…Ninja Turtles!) It’s a particular shame because there’s a nod to it in one episode that now doesn’t land.
I actually don't mind Venus I think she needs a better way of doing it but she can work. I actually liked the character design of the light blue. I don't know how I would do her origin, but Last Ronin or a cameo of her helping Mikey or any other brothers if you want a different turtle. Helping him cope with the loss of his brothers.
Ahhh yes, one of hollywoods first attempts at the “just add a girl and women will watch it” strategy, seems it worked then just well as it works now which is to say not at all.
One way i could see them adding a new turtle to the team is by giving them an older sibling, one who is nearly an adult. They would be the most mature member of the team, but is willing to slack off with the other members from time to time. I would see them as a mostly independent member who teams up with the turtles from time to time. They would give wisdom to the other turtles and act as mentor from time to time, but has difficulty working with others. Maybe this turtle is the black sheep of the family. The turtles look up to them, but mostly raph but they don't want any of the turtles to be like them.
Coming at this from the Power Rangers side of the fandom, I'm at least glad you shellheads have eyes. This version of the TMNT ruined the otherwise perfect streak of In Space's episodes being peak fiction.

Out of this whole show I remember when she and donnie were doing magic vs science and raph and Leo fighting and it's funny the two most memorable episodes are like literally very little fighting and more charters interacting cause I'll tell the new magic turtle girl was only good because she had great chemists with the others the show is only good when theres not really any attempt at a treaght or battle and it's the turtles themselves interacting

I grew up with next mutation in fact that was pretty much my introduction that got me into liking Ninja turtles and at the time when I was a kid Venus was my favorite turtle
The one way I want to see any female turtles in the TMNT franchise would be where the boys travel into some Rule 63 Dimension where everyone was born the opposite gender, and the boys met female versions of Themselves, same weapons, same personalities, the only difference would be that they're girls, and they actually come to respect each other as equals instead of letting gender politics get in the way of forming a decent friendship with each other, it might be kind of disturbing & awkward sure, but I think it would still be an interesting concept to try at least once.
McNeills a super cool guy, Ive met him a few times at conventions. A friend of mine couldn't go one time so he called her up on my phone in Piccolos voice to wish them a happy birthday. A very cool dude.
Actually, it's pretty funny you say Power Rangers was doing well at the time because... it wasn't! Due to the complete and utter bungle that was Turbo, In Space was a last-ditch "screw it we're getting cancelled anyway" season, with a slashed budget, very little oversight, and only running with the intent to end the show as well as they could. It's running on fumes, the effects are dire (not helped due to a misunderstanding about the sentai concept in pre-production) and all the confidence in Zeo's production has completely burnt out, but by making the best of what they could, audiences started to come back and revive interest in further seasons.
Most fans thought having a girl turtle was weird but the idea could have worked, maybe the girl turtles could have robots designed by Baxter stockman to defeat the turtles
Yeah if they did it like with Mona or characters like the triceratons she could have worked, but trying to retcon her into being their (not) sister and force her into the team just feels wrong. Again it would have sucked if he was a dude too, hell i think it would have been worse
The next mutation is definitely a sequel to the movies, "The next mutation" was the working title of the 4th movie that never happened (Because 3 happened) It was supposed to have all 4 turtles transform into new forms, and reveal that April was actually evil the whole time
I remember when they came out was on the Saturday morning block on fox kids, was during the movies in the 90s. They also cross over in power rangers in space.
Weirdly enough the way u described her reminds me of Gwen from Ben 10 so that means there’s a way to make her character work. For a question I wanna ask yuri lowenthal what did he do to create his Symbiote Peter persona. Was it inspiration from other spider-men like barns and Keaton or was it inspiration from previous works like sasuke.
Yuri is really good at doing a more dark corrupted take on his roles, Ben 10 gave him a few opportunities to do that but he's also gotten other roles where he can to do that like with his performance in RE Revelations 2.
I remember watching this one a lot, and wanting to be as into it as the previous properties, but it just never made sense to me. In retrospect, I think I was really just captivated by the girl turtle XD
I'm maybe the only one but I grow up with next mutation and yes after getting older I realise this has really bad, but I enjoy it, I adore Venus, because she has suck a unique thing and a great video.
This may sound strange but, this was actually my introduction the the TMNT franchise. I watched it, liked it, tried to find more and discovered other movies such as the 1990 one.
I’ve never watched that show fully cause I stopped Fox Kids until Mystic Knights came but I remember the sneakers my little brother got and was surprised Venus was with the 4 in the shoe box. And I realized so late that Venus was Bulma from DBZ!
I always liked the idea of venus and her personality but i also thought that they under utilized her potential. She was one of the turtles that was infected with mutagen so she should have been treated as a younger sister bringing the family closer not placed as a love intrest and making the brother not blood related. Have her be a clone 8. have her be a good shredder mutated to stop the turtles (like Slash or Toka) 9. being a copy of a male turtle from an AU where every one is gender flipped could work, could come off as icky since Leo would be falling in love with his other self . 10. have her be from an other dimension where turtles evolved instead of humans You want to avoid what Powerpuff Girls did with Bliss , having her come from a major retcon. This is why Bunny works better then Bliss, why the Rowdy Ruff Boys work better then Bliss, Wy Princess is better then Bliss, because Bliss was a sister who existed before that Professor just never talked about? it makes no sense. Its why Robins do work. They are all separate people with there own back story. Damian Wayne is not a secret Robion Bruce had before Dick that he never talked about, he's a son Bruce has with a love interest. It works out better that way. Secret Sister works in Star Wars and He-Man , and Secret Brother for MLP but It doesn't always work. It doesn't work in PPG it doesn't work in TMNT it doesn't work for Super Mario. You can do like Batman and pass down a mantel or like Spider-Man and do a clone or a new kid or do like Batman beyond and do a new person you take in and train, or do like Supergirl and have her be a lone survivor in outer space or Like kid Flash where you repeat the accident or like Jessie Quick where you time travel or whatever it was for Aqua Lad, Wonder Girl, Static Shock, X-23, Trunks, Goten, Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina, ...etc maybe have her be the daughter of a Turtle but "here is some one who always existed and I, your parent, kept her secret" is very hard to pull off. it would be much better to pull a Star Vs or an MLP FiM Even then it's easier to create Shining Armor or Flutter Brother or Babs Seed then it is to create Opaline Arcana or some sort of 3rd Sister to Celestia and Luna. Maybe one of the characters is gay or some thing? You don't know. You can't judge. Just saying you don't have to force Turtle/Turtle Some people force love to happen like glasses boy / glasses girl well maybe its ok if you don't date a clone of your self. Maybe you are aloud to date a whole other person? We shipped Star and Marco because they were room mates but the show had a dozen BETTER ships you don't always have to date your room mate or best friend its ok to date your co-worker or your kidnapper or a dead girl or a talking frog or a 2nd dead girl or a stranger you just met who lost her clothing as she ran away from you, a some one who lied tom you when you 1st met him but only did it because your laws were stupid, or date your sister's love interest because your boy friend was evil and tried to kill your sister or you can date your self and chose to not marry or you can turn in to a bear and date a bear. Love opens many doors. You can date a mute girl you found passed out on a beach who used to be a fish. You don't have to always date your self except female.
I noticed your take on the theme song but I don’t think you heard the original theme that was in the original airings but for some reason was replaced in the dvd release with the theme song that you talked about. The original doesn’t have much depth to it but it sort of talks about the inclusion of the 5th turtle.
The reason why it's dubbed is because on set the animatronics were to loud so they couldn't use the actual sounds from set.

My only real complaint about Venus is that she doesn’t have a unique color. They just gave her light blue, when it could’ve been white or yellow or even pink.

Funnily enough all those colours have been used by other female turtle characters since.
In the comics based on the 80s show April got turned into a turtle and she wore white, and in the newer comics they've introduced a couple new female turtles who favor yellow and pink.

The worst part about the retcon is that, they didn't need to make the main 4 turtles unrelated, they could still be brothers while having Venus unrelated to them. Just say she was mutated by Shredded or something, introduce her as a villain at first that later becomes good; Saban literally did that exact storyline for the green ranger 5 years prior to Next Mutation.

Looking at the situation as a whole, a rule against adding a fifth turtle was wise as it would involve rewriting the turtles' entire back story and throw the balance off, as was ultimately demonstrated with Venus and how convoluted her own backstory was.
This is reminiscent in some respects to how the writers of the 2016 Powerpuff Girls series created a new Powerpuff Girl named Bliss, who was actually the very first Powerpuff Girl, and caused their own backstory to be rewritten in an equally convoluted way.
What was even her backstory? She was a supergirl made by the professor but she had a temper problem and just vanished after a huge meltdown? Even though Professor made the girls on accident ,was thrilled his experiment actually worked, and was startled when he found out they had powers?

I think Venus gets such a bad wrap because of The Next Mutation being a terrible show, she's actually one of the better parts of it, even if her backstory is needlessly clunky.
I think they should focused on the fish out of water aspect as she slowly starts connecting with her new family (and get rid of the creepy horny overtones).
Also I always liked the idea of her, Slash and Metalhead forming their own team.
Sometimes she'd be the only likeable character. Everyone else, including Splinter, were moronic jerks.

If there’s one thing that’s great about the Next Mutation… it’s that Phelous did a retrospective that gave us great Ninja Turtles memes like, “A New Way” or “Michelangelo is Brain Dead”, or “What a Swinger”.

I discovered Venus in a coloring book, that for some reason actually had a dramatic narrative that depicted her backstory with realistic drawings. Had no idea the show existed until WAYY later, and I was amazed to find out she was in a show.
Jeez, the fact a colouring book can a construct a better narrative for Venus than the show, is even sadder.

Venus de Milo is basically Krystal from Star Fox if she was given even less to do
Krystal unfortunately was more a case of a character being completely repurposed when they were supposed to be more.
Venus was made to be the 5th turtle but just ended up being the subject of a ton of horny jokes.
In Krystal's case Rare cut her out completely during development. Iirc Nintendo made the decision to put her in the game at all following that.

But he insisted Krystal stay in it and just be reworked into a new Star Fox character. How it ended up impacting her involvement in the game/story thereafter was considerably worse imo than if it had remained it's own game but y'know is how it is.

Chung I: this dude found a turtle in chinatown and took her home to china. When she started mutating he was like “cool ill train her”. At some point he met splinter in the dream world and they became dream pals.
Andre: as a youngman he was hit in the face with a canister that fell out of a truck permenantly blinding him. This is the same canister that mutated our heroes. Years later he became friends with splinter unaware of his true nature. At some point he figured out that splinter wasnt exactly normal. He said nothing because the revelation changed nothing.
Venus: mei pei chi is the turtle that chung I found. After his tragic death she packed her bags and sold everything she could safely and emotionally part with in order to afford a trip from china to new york wearing a cloak that hid her face in order to avoid questions and scrutiny. Once in new york she found one of the turtles and followed him home where she was allowed to stay for as long as she needed. intially disapointed upon learning that none of the turtles were related she was quickly cheered up upon hearing that they saw each other as family regardless. at some point she was affectionately nicknamed venus di milo (venus for short) after bringing a statue home. She’s more focused on the mystic side of martial arts allowing her chi to flow through her strengthening her body and mind. She also utilizes magic. Both her chi and her magic do her credit but she still has difficulty with them sometimes resulting in doubts especially after she was temporarily weakened by the staff of bukai. Shes also somewhat proficient with chemical weaponry such as smoke bombs, glue bombs, bombs that perfectly replicate michealangelo’s breath, and itching powder. She came to rely on these a bit more after being weakened by the staff of bukai. Shes also knowedgeable in the feild of earth medicine and this combined with her magic and chi make her the teams unofficial healer and making her a good oartner for donnie when an antidote for something is required. Shes also highly skilled with various wrapons including swords, daggers, sharp fan thing, blowgun and shurikens. She and donatello do have a magic vs science rivalry at times, she thinks raph’s a bit too hotheaded and dickish, she questions leos leadership at times, and she wishes mikey would take things more seriously but she doesnt look down on them for any of this. She also has some difficulty with the english language but the other turtles are somewhat patient regarding this.
Dragonlord: once an evil tyrant before humans locked him away in a magic mirror he escaped centuries later by finding a way into the dream world. He caotured splinter and killed chung I. When the turtles rescued splinter he hitched a ride with them to the waking world. He has a note worthy appetite threatening to eat any life form that inconveniences him. He has the ability to reach into the past and grab something but he doesnt use this ability often because anything he takes has to put back when hes done with it due to timeline shit. He breaths fire too and is somewhat handy with a sword. Hes also knowledgeable on basketball for some reason
wick: the starscream to dragonlords megatron. he has his moments but he mostly fucks up all the time. And when he isnt fuckin up hes trying to take over. His appetite is also pretty substantial. he eats any life form he comes across but also enjoys celery. Hes a fan of michelangelos radio show and has considered switching sides for this very reason but ultimately being a bad guy is more beneficial for him. One time he created a super soldier potion that allowed him to usurp drsgonlord but this victory wasnt permanant.
Purple luietenent: the bob to dragonlord’s joker. Not much personality to speak of but his loyalty is unmatched.
Dr queeze: a jack of all trades scientist who isnt taken seriously by any feild. He works for drgonlord under constant threat of being eaten if he fails. He has several cybernetic implants that enable him to access the internet and hack into shit. He’s also an engineer and an arms maker inventing countless weapons and machines.
Silver: a yeti, the last of his kind. he lives in newyork where he developed a taste for bananas. He steals money that he can never spend and artifacts that he can never sell. possibly to cope with being the only one yeti left. pays his henchnen pretty well though. He also once made use of a computer program that mind controls people. (Some ugly scientist guy sold it to him). the turtles are hesitant to kill him because although he has shown a capacity and willingness to kill them they also know hes the last of his kind. Causing the extinction of an intelligent race isnt something you just do lightly.
Vam-mi: she was once defeated by chung I and her heart subsequently removed. sometime later shes awoken by her loyal vampire minions chi chu and bing. The trio does the usual vampire shit killing people either through drinking their blood or consuming their life force. Whatever theyre in the mood for. Vam-mi’s primary motivation is to get her heart back so that she can feel whole again.
Chi chu and Bing. Chi chu is loyal and strategic, bing is loyal and wise. After vam-mi’s death her minions stick around to get revenge and reek whatever havoc they want in the meantime.
Bonesteel: a monster hunter and tracker. When hes not hunting monsters he’s hunting endangered species because its the only money making skill he has. Hes not much when it comes to intelligence but he makes up for it with skill strategy and cunning. not only foes he sell the monsters and animals he captures but hes also been known to eat them on occasion. Hes also alluded to having eaten vampire heart before so cannibalism might not be out of the question considering vampires look enough like humans. Oh and hes scared shitless of gorillas.
the unknowables: a pathetic gang of ass hats led by heavy duke that control a small part of the city. Bonesteel teamed up with them once and they got captured almost instantly.
The rank: dragonlord’s army. Thats about it. Although some of them do defect for various reasons. Some aren’t comfortable eating intellogent life forms, some don’t think he’s a fit leader, some have grown to like michelangelo after listening to his radioshow.
Turtle clones: created by dr queeze to be the perfect blend of slave, soldier and cattle for the dragons. they’re useful for fighting battles and doing basic work but sometimes theyre killed and eaten sometimes as punishment for failure sometimes just for the hell of it and sometimes when the dragons need to “stock up”. at first the turtles try to save them because mutant turtle solidariy oe something but it doesnt end well. They’re basically mindless drones under the control of the dragons and thus completely unreachable. Whenever the real turtles have to kill these guys they don’t handle it very well not only due to reasons aforementioned but also due to the visual sikililarities to their brothers and sister.
Splinter clones: i got nothin, this wasn’t even a thing in the show i just think this wouldve been a fun idea. Maybe even bring the rat king in just for the hell of it.
The "Sharp fan thing" is actually called a Tessen. It's a Japanese War fan.

One thing I think is important to note, and the main reason I believe co-creator Peter Laird despised Venus, is that he did change his mind about a fifth Turtle, but the one that the creators wanted to add was a boy named Kirby, named after Laird and Eastman's personal hero and comics legend Jack Kirby who had recently passed away at the time. Venus (rather unfairly) essentially became an avatar for everything wrong with the show.
Yeah I remember looking into that Kirby turtle concept, sounded interesting but unsure exactly how that situation went down.
I've always loved seeing the obvious reverence Laird and Eastman have for Jack Kirby, to them he was the modern equivalent of a resonance painter.
The show's development actually began as a 4th movie also titled "TMNT IV: The Next Mutation" which would actually explore the turtles and Splinter going through a second mutation, affecting each of them with different looks and abilities. (Donatello would've gained telepathic/telekinetic powers but at the cost of losing his eye sight and would've worn goggles. And got a metal bo staff, Leonardo had the ability to turn his skin into metal chrome, Michelangelo would've turned into a human and allowed him to be accepted into society., Raphael had the ability to morph into "Raptor-Raph" with long claws, and monstrous teeth, and Splinter had the power to become a muscular wererat creature in order to fight along with his sons.) Unfortunately that script didn't go well. (But elements would be recycled in the later "Red Sky" era of the 87 show.)
And a new pitch was written titled "The Foot Walks Again" where instead the Turtles travel into a dark dystopian dimension. (I.e. Back to the Future 2 or Super Mario '93.) Which would've featured an evil hypersexualized April O'Neil, "Kasey" Jones having electrical taser-hands, and a firth turtle named "Kirby" (inspired by Jack Kirby.) Who was a rougher and violent survivalist in this dimension. The Foot Soldiers have also evolved with high-tech guns led by a Cyber-Foot leader "Fang". The Shredder is also very alive in this dimension. And the story would've taken elements of the City At War comic but with more futuristic tech gear with the hopes of making an even darker tone than the original 1990 film. However, that script went through many revisions, and rewrites from other writers and Eastman and Laird disliked more and more. Also, the trilogy's studio, New Line Cinema, was no longer attached and would've been distributed by TriMark Pictures. (The very small budget studio that brought us the Leprechaun and Warlock movies.) And this ambitious effects heavy movie could've ended up feeling like their previous films like Cyborg 2 (1993) and very unlikely Jim Henson's Creature Shop would've been able to return.

Fun fact: Power Rangers in Space (the season with Turtles crossover) actually had very small budget. It was meant to be the final season as the previous one, was a failure. It had low budget, but a productio that actually cared.
I mean, they gotta go all out for a franchise that already succeededaly attract fans and made millions. It’s basically their only Shot just like how the world is at stakes during the events of space. They don’t want the series to die nor the franchise that they already built.
Saban abandoned all of their failed creations in the very end but not Power rangers. As Power Rangers is their most successful creations that used Super Sentai as their base and incorporated it for Western Audience. They might have sold the franchise twice to save it from budget cost but they really cared about it. It’s really bad when it is so successful for its time or Really good when things aren’t going well.
They basically tried every single way to save this franchise from extinction.
Pretty much every time power rangers was on its way to being cancelled the team has been like “you know we might as well go out with a bang.”

Not both of them. Kevin actually liked Venus and even brought her to the IDW comics. Plus, the showrunners for Rise of the TMNT MAY have planned to incorporate her (they had plans to give the Turtles two sisters but the series was cut short so they had to drop the plan. They never said if the sisters were new characters or versions of Venus and/or Jennika, througth).
@juanrisa945 to be fair, I think Eastman likes all the Ninja Turtles adaptations he seemed more like the easygoing member of the duo. Where as Laird pretty much hated any adaptation of the Ninja Turtles except for the 2003 series and 2007 movie he was more the cynical old man of two.

Maybe is just me but I always find Venus de Milo extremely Underrated and there's so much potential they can use her and out of all the TMNT Characters they brought back or never Venus saddles my since she was left out biting the Dust, I'm so happy and excited after Years of waiting that is happening with a new Reconstruction and makes it more exciting to the Future Going Forward, the Wait is finally Over and it's Worth It.

I just looked up the voice actors for the turtles, and apparently 3/4 of them appeared in Lego Ninjago and the voice actor for Ralph voice Rantaro Kiyama in Beyblade burst S1-2
I think Venus could have been better if they'd instead of giving her magic focused her martial arts on internal techniques, with a more defensive and spiritual basis than the boys' offensive focus. Her weapon could have been the war fans, which would fit that aspect. Her personality, meanwhile, could have been much more timid and inexperienced, though I'm not sure. Just *something* to differentiate from the other Turtles.
Funny thing is, I think there are enough "fifth" turtles now to be able to make a larger team than the main group: Kirby, Venus, Jennika, Slash, and Metalhead. Yeah, Kirby was never actually used, but the point still stands.

So I actually remember when this aired as a kid, and the really weird thing is before it aired back when it was just showing teasers which were basically commercials of just text telling us that the show was happening. It’s specifically said that it was a continuation of the animated series but then when they showed aired, we all noticed the sets from the movie and were thoroughly confused.

Actually The Next Mutation has 2 (and a half) theme songs the "We're fantastic, never panic" theme song is the new theme song that aired on the new DVDs and streaming services. The old theme song (which tells you out the Turtles origin) was the one they used on Fox Kids and VHS releases and the original closing credits had a rap style. The UK version of the old intro was known as Hero Turtles the Next Mutation.

That’s an amazing point. The voices for the turtles (a bunch of voices I loved from Canadian cartoons and Canadian dubbed anime back in the day) would’ve been if they switched. But I probably would’ve had Mikey’s voice play Leonardo, that actor tends to play leaders in shows because of how good he is at it (the late great Kirby Marrow). But you’re absolutely right with the switches you made. Would’ve been perfect

You know Phelous actually did cover every episode of Next Mutation fairly in depth and pointed out it's many many MANY shortcomings but I appreciate Xaiver here trying to give this as fair a shot as possible actually able to find things he liked about the series (at least enjoying Bonesteel and the energy the actors had in the suits) while pointing out obviously the butt load of problems next mutation had. A couple of things he didn't point out due to either not knowing or not having time to get into it.
1. The theme song he talked about was actually the second Next Mutation theme song. For... I have no idea what the actual reason was but the original theme song when the show came to DVD and ran on other networks was altered into the version that Xavier talked about. But the version that first came out (that I heard as I did watch a bit of the show when it came out... not that much but I did see the finale of all things weirdly enough) actually DID explain the premise of the series a lot better and was much more about the team... granted it still wasn't that good but at least it talked about the team (oddly enough the original theme song said "teenage brothers" so yeah guess they didn't get the memo about the retcon this series would have) and what they did before talking about Venus and "now there's five" before just constantly saying Ninja turtles. I find "now there's five" especially funny because in the 2003 series the first theme songs made a specific point to always jsut count the FOUR ninja turtles like it was Peter Laird trying to subconciously say "no there have only ever been four don't try and think otherwise."
2. As Xavier poitned out with the easter eggs and look it's clear someone wanted to have this appear as the next part of the live action series not the cartoon universe but then... why is the tone much more juvenile and kiddified especially with all the wonky sound effects and the turtles acting even more bratty and juvenille then they had been in even the 80's cartoon series? Sans obviously trying to make the four less mature to try and prop up Venus, I think the rationale at the time was someone in the MIDDLE of production realizing "you know maybe we should try and play up the comedy instead of the seriousness more of the scenario" thus making it this far more wonky ridiculous affair. Like it feels like there was someone who originally wanted to take this more seriously but that got dropped pretty quick within the actual narrative of the show with things getting more and more weak and stupid the longer it went on. I am sure there probably is an interesting back story on this series... I'm not sure who would want ot read it though considering how much this series sucks but still interesting.
Still major props for managing to get through all of this in one sitting Xavier and actually not just fully spitting on it. Like I've seen other video reviewers talk about it (TV Trash, TJ TV, again Phelous) think you're the only one who could commit to pointing out why it didn't work without the full on hate storm that... I do feel is warranted here but again appreciate getting something different done here.
I’m sure it’s been said, but the “dance track” theme song is a replacement. The original theme is a rap (“Four green turtles! Heard the news? Got mutated by an ooze!” And ends with the riff “Na na na na Ninja…Ninja Turtles!) It’s a particular shame because there’s a nod to it in one episode that now doesn’t land.
I actually don't mind Venus I think she needs a better way of doing it but she can work. I actually liked the character design of the light blue. I don't know how I would do her origin, but Last Ronin or a cameo of her helping Mikey or any other brothers if you want a different turtle. Helping him cope with the loss of his brothers.
Finally someone put it into words! Scott McNeil was the show's saving grace!
Ahhh yes, one of hollywoods first attempts at the “just add a girl and women will watch it” strategy, seems it worked then just well as it works now which is to say not at all.
One way i could see them adding a new turtle to the team is by giving them an older sibling, one who is nearly an adult. They would be the most mature member of the team, but is willing to slack off with the other members from time to time. I would see them as a mostly independent member who teams up with the turtles from time to time. They would give wisdom to the other turtles and act as mentor from time to time, but has difficulty working with others. Maybe this turtle is the black sheep of the family. The turtles look up to them, but mostly raph but they don't want any of the turtles to be like them.
That idea sounds really cool! Wonder what weapon they would have?

Coming at this from the Power Rangers side of the fandom, I'm at least glad you shellheads have eyes. This version of the TMNT ruined the otherwise perfect streak of In Space's episodes being peak fiction.

Out of this whole show I remember when she and donnie were doing magic vs science and raph and Leo fighting and it's funny the two most memorable episodes are like literally very little fighting and more charters interacting cause I'll tell the new magic turtle girl was only good because she had great chemists with the others the show is only good when theres not really any attempt at a treaght or battle and it's the turtles themselves interacting

The one way I want to see any female turtles in the TMNT franchise would be where the boys travel into some Rule 63 Dimension where everyone was born the opposite gender, and the boys met female versions of Themselves, same weapons, same personalities, the only difference would be that they're girls, and they actually come to respect each other as equals instead of letting gender politics get in the way of forming a decent friendship with each other, it might be kind of disturbing & awkward sure, but I think it would still be an interesting concept to try at least once.

Actually, it's pretty funny you say Power Rangers was doing well at the time because... it wasn't! Due to the complete and utter bungle that was Turbo, In Space was a last-ditch "screw it we're getting cancelled anyway" season, with a slashed budget, very little oversight, and only running with the intent to end the show as well as they could. It's running on fumes, the effects are dire (not helped due to a misunderstanding about the sentai concept in pre-production) and all the confidence in Zeo's production has completely burnt out, but by making the best of what they could, audiences started to come back and revive interest in further seasons.
Most fans thought having a girl turtle was weird but the idea could have worked, maybe the girl turtles could have robots designed by Baxter stockman to defeat the turtles
Yeah if they did it like with Mona or characters like the triceratons she could have worked, but trying to retcon her into being their (not) sister and force her into the team just feels wrong.

Weirdly enough the way u described her reminds me of Gwen from Ben 10 so that means there’s a way to make her character work. For a question I wanna ask yuri lowenthal what did he do to create his Symbiote Peter persona. Was it inspiration from other spider-men like barns and Keaton or was it inspiration from previous works like sasuke.
Yuri is really good at doing a more dark corrupted take on his roles, Ben 10 gave him a few opportunities to do that but he's also gotten other roles where he can to do that like with his performance in RE Revelations 2.

I always liked the idea of venus and her personality but i also thought that they under utilized her potential. She was one of the turtles that was infected with mutagen so she should have been treated as a younger sister bringing the family closer not placed as a love intrest and making the brother not blood related. Stuuupiiddd!! Her fighting style should have also had more magical, mystical fighting involved as ninjitsu magic instead of how badly she actually fought. She could have had some flying orbs weapon that shows of more of her magical abilities that would also limit the obsurb overkill she does when for some reason she does insane stuff. Venus deserved better.

1. From day one don't have her be from the same bowl of pet turtles
2. Have her be a human or a turtle who was mutated in a battle after the 4 get mutated 1st
3. Do not have her exist before or at the same time as them and no one knew for dumb reasons
4. Have he be an alien (this works for Monalisa )
5. Have her be an established character who latter mutated such as April or Irma or Karai
6. Time traveler from the future could fall in the icky area as her present day self would be a child so lets skip that one but I have seen moves pull it off... but still lets skip it its a little too back to the Future.
7. Have her be a clone
8. have her be a good shredder mutated to stop the turtles (like Slash or Toka)
9. being a copy of a male turtle from an AU where every one is gender flipped could work, could come off as icky since Leo would be falling in love with his other self .
10. have her be from an other dimension where turtles evolved instead of humans
You want to avoid what Powerpuff Girls did with Bliss , having her come from a major retcon. This is why Bunny works better then Bliss, why the Rowdy Ruff Boys work better then Bliss, Wy Princess is better then Bliss, because Bliss was a sister who existed before that Professor just never talked about? it makes no sense.
Its why Robins do work. They are all separate people with there own back story. Damian Wayne is not a secret Robion Bruce had before Dick that he never talked about, he's a son Bruce has with a love interest. It works out better that way.
Secret Sister works in Star Wars and He-Man , and Secret Brother for MLP but It doesn't always work. It doesn't work in PPG it doesn't work in TMNT it doesn't work for Super Mario.
You can do like Batman and pass down a mantel or like Spider-Man and do a clone or a new kid or do like Batman beyond and do a new person you take in and train, or do like Supergirl and have her be a lone survivor in outer space or Like kid Flash where you repeat the accident or like Jessie Quick where you time travel or whatever it was for Aqua Lad, Wonder Girl, Static Shock, X-23, Trunks, Goten, Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina, ...etc

but "here is some one who always existed and I, your parent, kept her secret" is very hard to pull off.
it would be much better to pull a Star Vs or an MLP FiM Even then it's easier to create Shining Armor or Flutter Brother or Babs Seed then it is to create Opaline Arcana or some sort of 3rd Sister to Celestia and Luna. Even Flurry Heart works better then a 3rd sister to Celestia and Luna .
You can even do like on ALF or Thundercats where they discover a survivor who went in a new direction or like Legend of Kora when non-benders suddenly got powers
you could dump mutagen ozz on the city and mutate multiple new characters at once
also it is HARD to get people to see a character with out breasts and eye lashes as a girl
its an idea that can work its just its biggest failing was
1. she had magic
2. She was related separated at birth

an incest story would have been a rip off of Star Wars but it would not have been icky. It would have been drama but as long as Star Wars did it 1st as long as came from the roots of Shakespeare you can do the "I didn't know she was my sister" bit.
You could also give every one a ship and have her be friend zoned while the Turtles followed 4 other love interests.
but love triangles ARE part of what brothers and friends deal with. Some times you do love the same person. and some times you DON'T fall for your same race or your same religion or for your enemy or for an outsider. You can't help your attractions. Maybe one of the characters is gay or some thing? You don't know. You can't judge.
Just saying you don't have to force Turtle/Turtle Some people force love to happen like glasses boy / glasses girl well maybe its ok if you don't date a clone of your self. Maybe you are aloud to date a whole other person?
We shipped Star and Marco because they were room mates but the show had a dozen BETTER ships you don't always have to date your room mate or best friend its ok to date your co-worker or your kidnapper or a dead girl or a talking frog or a 2nd dead girl or a stranger you just met who lost her clothing as she ran away from you, a some one who lied tom you when you 1st met him but only did it because your laws were stupid, or date your sister's love interest because your boy friend was evil and tried to kill your sister or you can date your self and chose to not marry or you can turn in to a bear and date a bear. Love opens many doors. You can date a mute girl you found passed out on a beach who used to be a fish. You don't have to always date your self except female.
