      Can't thank you enough for your comparison video. Recently bought the 300L and bottomed out my suspension on some small jumps. Talking with a shop they suggested going to a 450RL because the suspension is "good out of the box." Had me thinking I may have bought the wrong bike but I am NOT a very experienced rider and occasionally hitting the mx track at slower speeds. Seems like a suspension and tire upgrade on the 300L is a better route. I do like its comfort on the road.

    Nothing replaces the hours needed to become efficient at all the skills needed to be safe with a reliable consistency. The rally has a purpose suited for weekend casual riding. I am looking to upgrade my ride and the rally is now a contender after your observations on video. My last dual sport was a 1984 XR350L. I had lots of fun with that bike, and it's 1400.00 new in the box price tag in 1984. Got my riders certification again this year, and I'm mostly a newbie again. Great video.

    I think your reaching a little on a few things. First the suspension on the 450RL most likely does not need to be updated like the rally unless you are exceptionally large person. Also, a tank is not necessarily a must on the RL, With that sub-frame is has you could use a roto pack that many riders already have for extra fuel. With just those two changes it really makes the 450 seem better. But then there is the oil changes. On BDR type riding it has been documented by many riders that the oil changes can be pushed to 1,100-1,500 miles with no issues. This is proven by sending in the oil and having it tested. If you want a high performance bike that squashes the 300 you can do it. The performance of the 450 is awesome and much better looking! I own a 300L

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These are all valid points. I just feel for the value, wind protection, display, fuel range, oil range, the rally is better. But thank you for weighing in, the cool part about this is we all have our own opinions.

  • @ericashwell1392
    @ericashwell1392 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Andrew , spot on and well said. First, well done for pointing out how wrong it is to compare so-called rider's ability is to someone else without knowing the full story. Ben even made a whole video about the mods he did to make the bike more manageable. The only you-tuber I have seen with a BDR/ADV trail worthy 450 is John T Young and he's spent a few years building it.
    I love my Rally and have put the following mods on it: ECU, full exhaust (for the stage 1 requirements), full lower crash protection (SRC moto bars/plate), and a rear rack. I've also upgraded the entire cockpit with higher bars/riser/heat tape grips and am still under $1,500 . As my skill improves off road I will figure out how far to go with suspension but for 12,000 miles and many many moto-camps later, I am still running stock. In fact, I don't think "itchy" changed her suspension until she reached California.
    This is a topic I'm glad that you felt compelled to address and your first bullet is most definitely a factor that most folks don't consider. The people that know better are not asking the question is the 450L a better ADV bike...because they know better. It is a bad ass dual sport to be sure and can run the 300L off the track, but then again, every tool has a place in the drawer.
    Thanks for sharing you insight and experience.

    I love the channel. I just wish I had watched this video before I bought my 450RL. I watched several including Dork Ben that you mentioned and ended up foolishly buying the 450 even though I am a beginner dual sport rider. I had the chance to get the 300L and I blew it and I have been kicking myself ever since. So much so that I am seriously thinking of getting rid of it for the 300L Rally. I'm even considering the 300LS if I can find one to sit on and ride. I should also say that the salesman didn't due their part to get me on the correct bike for me. Anyway...great stuff and if anyone who just watched this is on the fence regarding the 450RL and 300L and you are a new or newish rider then I would highly recommend the 300L. Trust me!!

    Best out the door price I could find on the 2024 Rally non-ABS was just under $8000 @ 2 dealers, $8400 @ 5 or 6, and 2 dealers wanted $8800. They all said add about $320 for the ABS and its additional tax. Amazing how much difference a year can make.
    This was in PA, NJ, and DE near Philly. And there's 1 less available now

    The bottom line is the crf300 is a beginner bike with beginner power, beginner suspension, beginner frame, beginner components. The 450 is made with heavy duty components and a full blown top tier race engine that’s detuned to last over 30,000 miles before a rebuild. The difference in quality between these 2 bikes is worlds apart. Take that for what it’s worth.

    The US$4,000.00 difference and the annual service cost of oil and filters for the 450RL approx $ 300.00 make one strong argument for the 300Rally IMO.
    Here in AUS THT IS ABOUT $6000.00 and that covers the suspension and all your gear for the entry adventure rider or weekend trail rider.
    For me that's a no brainer.
    Unless you are riding the 450 at its limits that is a lot of added expense.

  • @ajseusa1488

    Whats crazy about the name of a CRF450RL is that the bike it is based on the CRF450X and not the CRF450R or CRF450RX bikes. The R and RX models both have the close-ratio five-speed transmission, but the CRF450RL(L) has a wide-ratio six-speed transmission like the CRF450X model. Honda's naming scheme is still f#%ked up with the CRF450L models. (?) They should have named it the CRF450XL... IMO...

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad

    Great content and like your comparison . What's your thoughts on the KTM 390 or CB500x for beginners that are 50/50 and planning for more off-road ? I was told DR650 but it seems too much to start out

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think as far as the DR650 it would depend on you as far as height and strength. But if we are talking KTM390 vs CB500x it really depends, to be honest imo both are kinda shit offroad. When it comes to on road or gravel roads I like the 500X better a parallel twin would be a much more smooth engine. Both have a sub par wheel packages when it comes to offroad.

    so is there a street version of the 450 engine that would pair up well into a dual sport platform with a 6spd and 'manners' (traction controls, abs, high mpg)? currently riding a ‘19 250 rally, 6k miles since last fall, first bike and i'm looking forward to the TAT.

  • @jwaller1327
    @jwaller1327 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you were merely arguing that the CRF300L rally is the best BEGINNER dual sport for the TAT, I'd agree without reservation. But you didn't put the "beginner" in there, so I might have to respectfully disagree. I have a few points in favor of the 450L for experienced dual sport riders. You don't really need to change the oil every 600 miles in that type of use. But even if you do, it's a very simple thing to do and I think it's worth it for the extra performance. The weight difference will be significant when getting to challenging portions of any BDR or TAT ride. I am going to be doing an adventure rally with Everide next week and will be taking the 450L. I loaded it up with about 35 lbs of luggage and extra fuel and took it out on semi-technical single track yesterday just to test the equipment, and it was fine. Most of that extra weight would also have to be loaded on the 300 rally, minus the extra fuel, so there's no getting around the weight difference in favor of the CRF450L. Even loaded down, I'm certain the 450L was easier to manhandle in the rough stuff than a stripped down 300L rally would be. But I'd also say I'm not a total noob any more. I can handle the 450L now but wouldn't have been able to do so a couple years ago. So for a beginner or someone just looking to have a mild ride doing something like a BDR or TAT, yeah the 300L rally makes a lot of sense..... Just look at Itchy Boots! But an experienced rider who wants to push it would probably prefer the 450L and would be willing to deal with the extra maintenance.

  • @spadac4543
    @spadac4543 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have both bikes. Live in south Jersey too if you want to try it sometime. But I agree with you for a longer distance off road BDR or event the 300L is better. The 450L is my favorite bike right now but after less than 100 miles but butt is so sore and my hands are numb from vibration. The 300L I have taken on challenging off road rides of over 100 miles and felt really comfortable afterwards.

    • @rogerlarson8040
      @rogerlarson8040 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Can you elaborate more? The 450 has more vibration? You say the 450L is your favorite bike? How so?

    • @spadac4543
      @spadac4543 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rogerlarson8040 On the 450l just through the handlebars, pegs and seat you feel more "buzz". To the point where it becomes numbing. The seat is way worse on the 450l and obviously without a fairing you get more wind and fatigue because of it. But I terms of perks the power is just fantastic. It's so peppy and just feels fun and fast whereas especially on the road the 300 just felt kinda boring. The 450Ls suspension is amazing to the point where it just feels like it makes all the trails like easy mode. On the 450l I can just blast through the whoops.

    Oh and the other thing… I bought my 2022 450rl with 113 miles on it for $7500. Resale for whatever reason is low on the 450s and they seem to be high on thr 300’s in comparison. Completely modified (ecu, exhaust, emissions delete, hang guards, new handlebars, etc etc.) 450rls can be had for $8,000-$9,000 with low miles all day long on the used market. That’s bikes that cost $10k brand new and had another $3k-$5k put into them.

  • @twowheeledadventuresuk2739

    Some friends shipped 300 Rallies from the UK out to the states to do the TAT, they loved the trip, but as they were all expert riders they all agreed that in hindsight they took the wrong bikes and thought the rallies were awful. I think if you said what is the best beginner bike for the TAT then you might have a point, but for anyone else i'd disagree. The oil thing is also a red herring, you can easily do 1500/2000 miles between changes on the 450L, the manual figures are aimed at the bike being raced or flat out, that's not what you'd be doing on the TAT. If I had to take a stock bike, with no mods, then that has to be the 450L, the 300 rally suspension is awful, that has to be sorted, especially if your gonna put gear on the bike. At the end of the day there is more to it than stats, looks are important to me, what the bike says, if you offered the 2 bikes to Steve McQueen or Jeremy McGrath, I know for sure which bike they'd both happily take!

    As good a value as the 300 Rally is after being prepped, I would reiterate that it is perfectly capable with nothing but the luggage you need to add. Im not sure about how much longer it will take, but my point is that it is a huge inconvenience and it just shows that the motorcycle was not intend for that purpose. The 450 is intended to charge ahead and be a sprinter where the 300L is more of a long distance endurance athlete.

    Your video should say cheapest beginner not best, 300 is gutless and suspension atrocious, 450 needs a bigger tank and a screen and agree its oil change interval is its biggest downfall. Good chance Honda will bring out the 450 in a rally version and blow the sml Adv market away.

I road a crf 250r at a track recently and I honestly did NOT enjoy myself.. that power is "stressful" for me.. on a road-bike I think I might enjoy the power, but off-road, particularly with trees which are very heavy and very hard.. I think-- if they came out with a more tame 450 with good service intervals like the 300, I think I'd definitely be interested especially if it had a suspension for someone who weighs 230lbs. but this 450 RL and its ridiculous oil change intervals??? no way. That's too close to a track-bike. Not to mention the flame outs... believe me, I've experienced that on the CRF250R too.. its no fun.. you basically have ro run it like you're in a race to actually run it.. you're gonna spend a bunch of money on that bike maintaining it. its very curious what you did with your rally with the extra tooth on the sprocket... I would have been worried about the power loss but if you did it, and you are happy?? See, I have never ridden the 300L or rally so I have no idea what the power feels like on those bikes. I know it's not a monster. I have looked at DRZ400 a lot and haven't been able to make up my mind.. with the DRZ being a 5 speed, I don't really like that because we're back to having a taller first gear on that which may not be so bad??? no matter how you chop it, I'd like the DRZ to be a 6 speed.. any ways.. I'm in no hurry. I keep hoping Honda will do a tame CRS 450 or maybe a crf 400 which more of a road engine.. something you can maybe un-cork something that allows for hooligan power but is easy going.. for me and probably many others that would be the ultimate bike. fat chance. how long do we have to wait for that. I've also considered the XR650L but the fuel economy is much worse and has a small tank and its a horse.

    I own a 300 Rally and love it and am comfortable on it. The MPG, maintenance intervals and weight are the biggest factors for me when I decided to buy one.
