CRF 300 Rally. 8K mile service intervals. 3.5 gallon tank, well over 200 mile range. 330 pounds. The stock suspension isn't the best, but if you keep it at a serene pace it's doable. The engine has excellent mid range and the 6 speed gear box ratios are dam near perfect. Plus it's a Honda and will be dam near indestructible.

Tenere 700 hands down. Comfy on the road, moser reliable engine ever made, and very very capable off road. 450 pounds but wears it well. I go off road all the time on mine. I ride with guys that are on their dirt bikes. Look up Pol Tarres the seeker. Great bike and very capable.

Yeah great bike. My biggest gripe about CycleCruza is his blatant negative opinion on adv bikes but never rode one, especially with more dirt oriented tires. I remember his same opinion on supermoto’s when he had his WR. I built a YZ450F at the time and we commented to each other a few times about it. Then one day he went for his current supermoto and now he realized what a real supermoto is.
It will be the same with an ADV bike, I use to race MX (just at local tracks, I am no pro or an A rider) so when I got into dualsports then ADV, I though you needed the most aggressive bike possible. But the Trans America Trail, that’s the worse choice. It’s an extremely easy and open riding. Miles upon miles of straight roads doing 65. You need a bigger bike for stability, range and comfort is nice too. Yes there are sections you can choose to do the advanced or hard route but that is above cyclecruza’s experience riding offroad. I wish I live near him and let him try a properly setup mid weight adv bike. I have a KTM 790 R. All done up. I sold my 450L after riding this off-road. It’s far more capable than he thinks. Same for the Yamaha, my buddy owns one and I wish I had either one when I did the TAT

    • @francisnorthwood7862
      @francisnorthwood7862 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

na brow its a pig off road and the suspension needs a lot of tuning... if you are a real pro you can make it work. do not forget you have to load that thing too and all the extra weight makes it a real pain when you drop it. been there done that and thinking about the crf 300... you can do rtw even on a trail90. smaller bikes = less problems

  • @luvnotvideos
    @luvnotvideos ปีที่แล้ว +2

Don't be obsessed big cc for the TAT. The name of the game is light-weight workhorse. Most of it's dirt roads so you aren't going to go FAST, but you will go HARD. Buy a used bike that's in good condition, then spend the rest of your budget on soft bags and ultralight camping gear and repair supplies (tubes, travel tools, JB Weld, etc). Almost every video I've seen of people on big bikes state they wish they had a lighter mount. Those that have the best time are on smaller, lighter dual sport bikes in the 250 range (watch Itchyboots vlogs - she's on a little 250 and is rocking it hard or EveRide on his DRZ400). When you're done, you can keep the 250 to explore other BDR routes, or sell it and recycle that money into something else.

Every week for fun, I ride my 2018 DRZ400S on the hwy 20 miles one way cruising comfortably at 70mph. Then I ride it up a mountain road another 18 miles one way. I start out at elevation 1,800ft and finish at elevation 11,000ft. The DRZ400S has no issues with elevation. It handles everything very well, including hwy cruising. I do this trip twice per week, it's my back yard. Round trip is 76 miles. I appreciate this video and you are spot on about adventure bikes being too heavy and cumbersome to be good adventure bikes. DRZ400S has phenomenal suspicion and reliability. The motor pulls like a tractor with amazing torque. The Honda 450 and DRZ400S would be excellent choices for the TAT. What makes the DRZ400S the better choice over the Honda is the price. A bigger gas tank, skid plate, and some racks is all the stock Drz400S needs for the TAT.

Do it! I'd Be happy to ride a few days with you through TN and towards the the west.
Don't discount the XR650L. You can put a 5.8 gal tank on it and run over 220 miles a tank and it is reliable and easy to maintain. I've been bangin' away on my '09 650L (11,000 miles) for the past two years between highway, off-road, and BDR and the thing is a tank. You are right that the carb isn't always fire it up and go, but it's reliable and simple technology. Honda hasn't made any major changes to the bike in three decades... Because it just works.

Nice! XR650L is a legend but I avoid a carb. I prefer FI. I'm leaning towards the CRF450RL or 690/701. This dude and his friend just recently finished the TAT on a pair of CRF450L/RL bikes: th-cam.com/video/Pi_AKSkfN1w/w-d-xo.html

I did it on a KTM 690 and it was a really good choice although in the really technical stuff like the Rockies, Black Bear pass etc, I would have preferred the EXC 500. A lot depends on whether you are riding alone or in a group, you can get away with T700 and Tiger 900 etc if you have buddies to help you out of bogged down situations and deep river crossings when they go wrong but in my case I was solo so 330 pounds (400 pounds fully fuelled and luggage) was the max. That said, many times I wished I had picked the 80lb lighter 500 and I met many people on them who were very happy to do 1,500 to 2000 miles between oil changes (trail riding and race service schedules are not the same thing). The 690 of course does 6,000 mile oil changes so I did the whole thing only needing to do one. I would strongly recommend Tubliss tire conversion if you are riding solo too. Being able to repair a tire without removing the wheel saved my ass a few times in 112 degrees in the desert and once literally when a curios grizzly family came to check out the noise from my electric compressor in some deep woods. You have never seen a guy pack a compressor away and haul ass away quicker!

I’ve been studying the trans America trail for the last 2 years. I’m going to do it in 2023. I have a crazy work schedule and unfortunately can’t make it before then. One thing I noticed was the amazing amount of over packing some of these people do. They will have 32 different ways to cook a hot dog but only one inner tube. Several of these more popular TAT videos have the riders talking about over 100 lbs of gear! That’s crazy to me. I’ve been riding on the road for 25 years and did dirt bikes for 15 years from age 10. Now, I haven’t been on a dirt bike in about 12 years. The bike I think is almost 50/50 of the issue people have. Any bike you get will be horrible if you load the thing up with over 50 lbs total of gear.
Oh yeah, I’m looking at buying the KTM 890 Adventure R. Soft reckless 40L bags from Mosko Moto, tank bag and a back pack for water and snacks storage. The other bike is the T7 Tenere 700 from Yamaha.

    • @saracuster5616
      @saracuster5616 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I’m also gearing up to do that TAT, I’ve been weighing so many options for bikes it’s daunting. I keep coming back to the 890r. A Tenere 700 seems great but after riding one I realized the stock suspension isn’t even adequate for me with no gear. I haven’t ridden the 890r yet but from the research it looks like could pretty much run it as is. The 890r has enough fuel range to make the longer sections without an auxiliary tank. Talking to a few people that have owned both say the 890r feels much lighter due to the lower center of gravity. It’s reported the 890r handles being loaded with gear much better. I have no doubt a Tenere would do the TAT fine once it’s modified however by the time I get a T7 set up properly it’s still a little lacking compared to the 890r and the price difference all but disappears.

My nephew and I did the TAT last June into July. 28 days. Started from my home in eastern NC rode to Nags head and hit the trail to Port Orford Oregon. Then turned around and headed home via Yellowstone and Jackson Hole Wyoming. I rode my 2017 BMW F800 GS with a suspension upgrade. My nephew rode his Tenere 700 which I think is darn near the perfect bike for the trail. We did Cinnamon, Engineer, Marshall, Cordova and Imogene passes. We did Warloop road in Arkansas, Moab and slick rock and black dragon wash in Utah. Pretty much went everywhere that many go on smaller bikes. We averaged 14 hours a day in the saddle and made it from the coast in Oregon back to my home in coastal NC in 3.5 days. Trust me when I tell you there were plenty of times I wish I was on a smaller bike but more times then not I was glad to be on my GS. All that said I rode my nephews T700 several days and was extremely impressed. He went bone stock and it performed perfectly. Our tires were the Dunlop tail max mission tires. Handled the dirt incredibly well as it did the tail of the dragon and million dollar highway. Both of us used those tires and a year later and 13k miles later I’m still on the same set. Best adventure tire I’ve ever used. Good luck. Oh and one sage piece of advice, when you hit the desert make damn sure you have plenty of water and a good tire patch kit.I

I can tell you this. If you can get a dealership to let you rent a 300 for a day or if you know someone that has one, I would encourage you to spend a day on it. Long days in the saddle on a very narrow seat might sway you one way or the other. I was 58 when I did the TAT. I put a seat concepts 1” lowering comfort seat on my f 800 gs. It made the 14 hour days go much easier on my old butt. I would say ride them both because comfort is important for a multi day trip. I’m familiar with Florida. I was born in Homestaed and left after graduating high school. I still have family in the Stuart and crystal river area. Use to ride horses with my cousins in the Ocala National forest. Beautiful area. I highly recommend riding them both to see which one is more comfortable.

When I decided I was going to ride the TAT, I purchased a new 2018 DRZ 400S. It has 26,000+ miles on the clock and has been fantastic. Light-ish, bullet proof, and fun. I think a CRF 300 Rally, and the new KLR would also make great choices. The major drawbacks on the DRZ are fuel capacity, seat and the stator. Sure, the aftermarket solves those problems, but the KLR and CRF come ready to handle it. What the TAT really comes down to is, camping gear, tires and set up. Today, I'd probably go KLR.

T7, CRF 300 Rally, KLR new, KTM 890, etc. Tough choices and endless combinations many pros and cons with each. Question is do you want ready to go or put in some work? What time of year for trip? What are you must load out for this trip? This would help narrowing down bike type, weight, maintenance, performance, comfort. T7 why, for the money you get a little more reliability and all around bike for real adventure. I’ve wanted to do this trip for a few years now.

I haven’t gotten to do the tat yet. But have a dr650 that I want to do it with. Changed the carburetor to a meter rod carb that will self adjust for altitude. Then some pretty standard other additions, larger fuel tank, skid plate, cushier seat, easily cleanable inline fuel filter, reusable air filter, airbox mod, thick tusk handlebars, mirrors, grips, added a throttle lock, header pipe and exhaust, took it down a few teeth for more low end, some dr specific stuff, tusk panniers/rack and some 90/10’s. Any bike you go with you’re probably gonna want a better seat. Throttle lock is definitely a bonus for when it’s usable.

I don’t have the bike for it yet, but I’m planning on doing the TAT on a DR650. But then Kawasaki gave the KLR fuel injection which would be incredibly handy in the high mountain passes of Colorado. So I’m a little conflicted.
I’ve seen TH-camrs tackle the TAT on everything from a Honda Trail 125 to a Honda Africa Twin. Although I’m with you on not using an ADV bike due to the weight. If I was bent on using an ADV, then nothing bigger than the V-Strom 650.

First off I would to do the Trans American Trial. Haven't looked into a bike for that. You hit the nail on the head for the Adventure bike crew. I put a deposit on a GSA. My plans for it is touring. Mainly street. Knowing I could travel nice gravel/dirt/jeep trails type roads if it came up. Very comfortably. Not having to lube or tighten a chain. Plus..... Lazy yes. I use to ride my Suzuki katana everyday on a dirt road that I lived on. So I know any bike will do it. GSA Heavy, yes. Don't know if it would be real fun on a single track. Lol Challenging most definitely. 🤣 As far as my 2cents on a good dual sport I think probably DRZ or KLR. But with extra big fuel tanks bags and such you might be getting close to the 500lbs weight of a GSA. No help but my thoughts. Honda has a new 300 I think that might fit the bill. Not sure if I could join you, but would love to. If not living Vacarously through TH-cam if you film it good luck

I'd be interested in joining the group for the TAT. I have a 2020 KTM 790 Adv R, great middle weight adv bike. I take it to single tracks on Rampart Range and dirt bike riders look so confused😂 she's a heavy gal, but my first time I was sliding the rear out on the burms. I’ve done the TAT twice. Not only coast-to-coast, but also from AZ to the east coast then from the west coast back to AZ. So that’s two coast to coast trips for each TAT trip. Once on a T7 and once on a GSA1250. But I like riding big bikes off road. I definitely wouldn’t want a small bike. You need to lay miles down. 200 a day average for a month. Everyone praises the T7 for the TAT, but I rather run the GSA1250. Better balance and lower center of gravity. They are both great though. You don’t need a dirt bike. You can take a Honda Civic across 90% of the TAT.

Can’t go wrong with a Honda. I have to say though. I’m loving my new 2022 KTM 500 EXC-F. Remember those recommended service intervals have racing in mind. My dealer said changing the oil every 900 miles would be fine. I will probably choose a smaller interval to be on the safe side though. Check out Keith Jobson videos on the KTM 500. He’s got the light ADV setup dialed in on that bike.

I really wanted a 450L and looked into buying one about 6-7 months ago. After riding a couple of them I was really surprised how much I no longer wanted one. I really didn't like this bike for several different reasons. I came from a WR250R with I LOVED, but wanted a bike that could more easily punch out hwy miles. So I was in search of essentially a more powerful WR250r. I have owned a couple KTM's and swore I would NEVER own another one, but never came faster than I thought. After looking at everything I landed on 690 enduro r and I am really happy with it after 3K miles. Bottom line is that I really just could not/would not get what I think is a HEAVY bike (890,Tenere, etc. etc.) I really like to ride offroad and want to do the BDR's. Loaded up 600lbs+/- just wasn't going to work for me. I wouldn't say the 690/701 is perfect but it ticks more boxes for me than any other bike. I can ride it on the freeway no issue and still at ~340lbs wet it's not to far from the WR off road. Just my story......hope it gives ya food for thought.

I'm just waiting for CC to buy an ADV bike, I have a feeling this time will come. And really ADV bikes are not that bad off-road, especially if you are riding for your own pleasure, and you are not doing some hard enduro, they maybe are not the best choice for smaller or older guys off-road because of the weight, but other than that...

haven't made it all the way through the video yet but, A friend and I are planning to do the TAT from the panhandle of Oklahoma to where it ends in Colorado and Possibly Utah depending on our time line.
As far as bikes go, just get what is best for you. I had a Multistrada but I really like being off road and it just didn't work for me so I got the Africa Twin. As far as weight goes, FOR ME, the AT is not heavy. I'm not saying in any way it is a light bike, I just have a higher lifting and endurance capacity than some and being hard headed helps. I have had both bikes in really technical situations and It's all about experience. I haven't had an issue yet.
My channel is tiny but I sure could help out with getting footage. It's a long shot but keep it posted if and when you go. Maybe we can meet up somewhere.
Also, This October I will be doing the NMBDR solo. If you want to dip your toes in that water then hit me up. Not sure if It is proper to leave my IG so I will just wait to see if you respond.

If you're doing super tight single track and worried about weight I get it, you said you'll be worn out picking the bike up, I myself would be more worn out riding a single track, single cylinder bike that distance.
I can ride pretty much anywhere on my Africa Twin with the right tires.
And I don't get worn out riding 10+ hours a day. I'd get frustrated too with the small gas tanks on the bikes you mentioned.
Honestly the smallest bike I'd consider for a ride like that would be a dr650 with a big tank and big comfy seat as the stock one is like a brick. But it's light enough for tight trail riding and with a comfy seat and big tank you can't go wrong. I've owned 4 and they are bulletproof.
The tenere 700 I haven't had a chance to ride but for weight, power etc would be a great choice too

Biggest question - do you plan to have someone in a chase vehicle with all your stuff or are you packing everything? The problem with the lighter bikes is they don't carry weight as well, though they are much easier to ride with just riding gear on. KLR 650 (new ones are fuel injected) carry weight way better than the 450's. Would still want/need some mods like any bike would. KTM/Husky are the move if you don't care about price and don't have a chase vehicle (even if staying in hotels, but no chase rig). Should be an epic ride!!!

If I were to do a TAT journey, my short list would consist of the following bikes: 1) Royal Enfield Himalayan; 2) Suzuki DR650S; Honda XR650L; and the Kawasaki KLR650. The Himmy and the KLR have fuel injection. The Honda has competed and SURVIVED the Baja 1000-'nuff said! The Suzuki can do both on and off road well; whereas the Honda is a big, street legal dirt bike and the KLR more biased to road travel, the Suzuki splits the difference between the two. The four bikes, particularly the Japanese bikes, have been around for ages; they have loyal follwings; they have good parts availability; they're lightweight; and they're simple, easy to work on machines.

The TAT I been researching, it is an 6000mi and will take 30days, it like a IRON MAN ADVENTURE, it will test your mind, body, strength, will and machine, your correct it must be any light reliable Japanese DUAL Sport, probably my choice is a HONDA 300, can be done on a larger bike but you better be in a group ride, need windscreen and 4gal tank, going to use 2 sets of D606, MT21 tires, need to pack very very lite like your back packing, hell I would like to do it but my time has gone by, the only think I have done was the MABDR, half on a tenere700 and half on wr250r and most challenging part was camp setup and take down and carrying, organizing all equipment, next I am planning NEBDR, do 3 to 4 days at a time till its completed

But I needed a bike to do it on so two years ago I got a great deal on a drz400s and I have been outfitting it as a light adventure bike . Last year I took a ride down to Florida from Virginia where I live . Only two rules no highways and no hotels I took 21 days to do a round trip camped every night. Had the time of my life . It would be an honor to do the TAT in a group with you . It would be an unforgettable adventure. So I’m ready just say when and let’s make it happen 👍 Carpe Diem

I think your 450FX could do it. Remember the oil change interval is there for racers that like to stay in a high RPM range. For cruising, it won't burn oil as fast. I think you would make it. Also, you have to get gas anyways. Many gas stations will let you drop your oil without even charging you. They have in-ground used oil tanks, and you can just pull right over it and drop your oil right into it. Buy some 10W-30 from them, and drive away. You don't need a new oil filter every time. Easier than doing it at home.

I would go with the DRZ400 with the electron carb. The CRF450L would also be a decent pick, I’ve seen a couple videos of a guy in WA that did part of the TAT from WA to CO, and back in a long weekend on a CRF300L rally. The power probably isn’t what your used to on the 300 but the gas mileage and maintained intervals along with the OTD price seems like a smarter buy. If you go the DRZ route and electron carb, or the 300 I would go with the supermoto wheels and adv tires. I wouldn’t focus on more power for the TAT more low speed maneuverability. Though running the 450L or RL I would just run stock, with mods for baggage. I would also watch a video by a guy Adventure Daily, “why you should not buy the crf450l” granted I would get the crf450l over the 690/701. Either one you pick I’ll be watching and I am really curious on which you pick, and your experiences with you choice. I want to do the TAT and the Pan American, so I’m curious on how it goes for you.

Plated WR450F, non race oil changes are 600 miles I think. get some Warp9 wheels with cush hub. Would be light and very capable. but it's got a tall uncomfortable seat

That's pretty much what my YZ 450FX is minus the emissions crap. I got Warp 9 wheels and cush hub too. I do oil changes about every 8-12 hours whatever that equates to in miles. The KTM 690 SMC R or Husqvarna 701 sm has 5k oil changes, you could ride coast to coast and back without an oil change and it has all the power you need but I don't know if I trust the reliability to take me across the country. However, it's been out a long time now where they should have all the kinks worked out.

You sold the best bike for it, did it on a wr250x last year but put the wr250r knobbies on. Had the ims 3 gallon tank and 2 gallons in a rotopak but never used it. I'd say you could do all to it on sm tires tho.

Do it on the yz. Basically same oil change intervals as the Honda. Prove the Yamahas reliability

i think u won't get more comfy from crf450 for long rides because of the seat. I don't know after market seats also help because of the narrow size. Consider about 701/690 or tenere 700. Remember comfortable, power, stability, mainly RELIABILITY also need to concern for a long tour like u concern about agility and weight.

Riding long distance on a motorcycle would suck. I like your idea of having a van with your motorcycle in it.

I’m throwing my 2 cents in on a Husky 701 long range. It’s designed for exactly what you’re doing. Only issue is maybe it’s not as reliable as Japanese but people swear by it. I would do it on a Kawasaki klx 300 or a Honda crf300L Rally if it was me but that Husky long range edition is tempting

Get the bike you can readily buy wheels and tires for and change out yourself while on the trail. Go Honda.

    We have done it on a wr250r a ktm 690, husky 701 and a dr650
The WR is far too underpowered and the shit rear shock with its lack of rebound control is extremely dangerous the wr250 power is fine at low elevation but loaded up with 50-100 lbs and hit 12k+ ft in elevation and its sitting on about 8 hp
Your biggest issue is range. We had a few legs at was 190 miles between fillups.
I also owned a 450l. You need a vortex and larger tank. It will work fine but you need to carry 2 gal of fuel on the longest leg after you upgrade to the 3.1 gal tank
I currently own a ktm 790 and its offroad capability is amazing. I am prepping for the Wyoming BDR
My advice is just don't go smaller than a 450. Yes small bikes can do it but its a struggle
Btw we also did Yellowstone to Oregon coast down to eureka, CA

KTM 500 with a larger tank. Even the Honda you’d need an aftermarket larger tank. I’m down to tackle the tat. You have to run knobbies.
