Why The Honda CRF300L is Better Option Than The CRF450L Dual Sport
The Honda Crf450l and 300L are new and pretty much taking the dual sport world by storm so much that the CRF300L is very hard to get right now because of it. I really think that the Honda CRF300L is a much better option than the CRF450L because of a few reasons. The crf300l and the crf450l share pretty much the same frame and almost look the same they are different but one thing is for sure the crf300l will pretty much do anything the crf450l can do!

I agree. As a KTM EXC-F owner I am here for a reason. I am researching a bike that will take me where I want to go without needing maintenance after each ride. 15hr interval oil and filter changes along with valve checks is really getting old for me. I just want to ride.

The amount of wrenching needed on my EXC-F compared to the CRF 250L is not that bigger, the difference is, it's all regular maintenance on the KTM and repairs on the Honda. The only repairs the KTM needed was new levers and registration plates (in my country, they're huge, much wider than the bike's profile), on the other hand, every time I dropped the Honda, something bent.

I have always thought that the 450L should have benn made more like the 250L, just larger engine but that is not the way it turned out. That and the price makes the 450 not an option for me.

    • @hrcjoet
      @hrcjoet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Exactly, 450 plus good service intervals and design it to easily take out all the smog/emissions stuff and open her up. All the Japanese manufacturers could do this and they would sell millions. Just don't get why they won't do it. It's a no brainer. Make a 250 and make a 500 just like the old days. Fuel injected, 6 gears, hydraulic clutch and brakes, make it easy to delete and upgrade.. Why is this so hard?

    • @spotthedogg
      @spotthedogg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The 450L is exactly what it should be, a tad closer to the 300L than the 500EXC. Changing the oil is no big deal, it only holds 1liter. If you’re buying it for a street bike it may get annoying, but I change mine (BMW G450X) every 12 hours of riding and I don’t feel like I’m doing it a lot because it’s 95% trail riding

@@spotthedogg I second this... I have a 2020 CRF450X with a street legal kit (the 450L is the same bike as the X, but street legal) It's not a great street bike, but that's what my FJ09 is for... As a dirtbike though, this thing is fricken awesome and the oil changes are cheap & easy! 1.25 quarts of oil every 500 miles is a 10 minute ordeal. At first I had to wrap my brain around the maintenance, but in reality keeping clean oil, a clean air filter, and a lubed chain is not asking that much for a bike with this level of off-road performance and Honda Reliablility.

To sum it up bluntly you are rating motorcycles which you do not own therefore you are not qualified to rate them! I do not wish to be rude. However, I will be blunt I’ve never heard a more supercilious narcissistic statement then when you say: “I don’t have to ride motorcycles to be able to rate them and know how they’re going to perform”. I can’t think of a more arrogant ridiculous filled statement full of rubbish I’ve heard in the last few years!! Essentially what you said was using different words: “I don’t need to ride a motorcycle to know exactly all about it” this is in essence what you said! I own both! And you couldn’t be so far from correct as night and day are different!!!!!
Succinctly it’s been proven over the last three years the 450 L does not need to have the ridiculous maintenance schedule followed if you are not trying to ride it like a motocross motorcycle! The CRF450 L is a dirtbike made in Japan at Honda‘s premier manufacturing motorcycle plant! THE CRF450L IS A DIRT BIKE WHICH IS STREET LEGAL!! Depending on how you ride it you do not need to follow the ridiculous maintenance intervals as I stated in my much longer previous rebottle too many riders have proven this to be true as has my own bike!!!! Those intervals are for the guys who buy a street legal bike and then expect to go down to the motocross track and keep up with the guys on the CRF 450 R‘s. Other than making the frame 6 mm wider to accommodate the sixth gear the frame on the CRF 450 L is the same in build quality thickness weld quality etc. as the motocross version of the CRF 450!
The CRF300L is a street bike which is somewhat dirt capable period end of discussion. This comes from somebody who owns each of them. (I did own a CRF250 L and it was the worst dual sport I have ever owned! It is too heavy, has a horrible suspension and terrible power!! I’m 5 foot 10 and 152 pounds so I don’t think my weight is the issue when I tell you a motorcycle is it under an under powered garbage scow! I could not believe Honda had turned out such junk! As of right now both of my WR250R‘s can give the CRF 300 hell a run for the money in any realm anywhere on road off road and they always thrash my CRF300L to pieces off road! The WR250R’S aluminum frames are built almost to the SAME beefy standards of the CRF 450 L. I would say when measuring the thickness of aluminum and looking at their welds they probably have between 85 to 95% of the strength of the CRF 450 L frame. If the CRF300L frame were a chrome molybdenum chromium steel frame then its frame would be worth discussing. I was thoroughly disgusted when I saw the frame of the CRF 300 owl in person. The only reason I purchased this bike was I couldn’t forfeit the deposit I had put down on it! Don’t worry it will be sold it is not up to the standard of Yamaha‘s WR250R! We can only hope next year Yamaha will introduce a WR 350 R and that will settle the discussion of who makes the best light to midweight dualsport well the Honda CRF450L when modified can hold it’s own against the KTM‘s and the Husqvarna‘s of its displacement!
The aluminum frame on the CRF300LSlim is far too small for such an overweight bike to even remotely consider it a dirtbike or even a competent dirt duel sport motorcycle! They are very likely going to wind up breaking since the CRF300L frame IS SO FAR BELOW THE WR250R’S FRAME!!!it I won’t even compare the CRF300L FRAME to the CRF 450 L!!! Last the CRF300L is made in Hondas tier 2 or second rate plant whatever you wanna call it! I realize this is going to get a lot of guys underwear in a not but the bottom line is Honda only builds their very best bikes in Japan and their other bikes, (yes they are built to their specifications), when compared to the Japanese made bikes are simply nothing short of second rate lower quality cheaper motorcycle! This is exactly what the CRF300L is compared to the CRF450L!! I’m sorry I tried to be polite before but your statements are so sweeping in their breadth and scope whilst lacking any real world experience on the bikes you are reading your writing is nothing short of utter rubbish sir. You appear to have a grandiose narcissistic filled view of your knowledge coupled with a void of real facts and evidence.
Your “claimed information” simply must be rebuffed for people who are looking to truly understand these bikes to make a purchase! My 2019 Husqvarna FE 350 has a frame composed of steel, chrome, molybdenum, and chromium. This frame is roughly the size and weight of the aluminum frame on the CRF300LSlim yet we all know the Husqvarna FE 350 has a vastly superior stronger frame! Call please take this video which is so full of falsehoods disinformation and opinionated lack of knowledge off of the Internet before you cause somebody to purchase a bike they will regret! Just so you know I purchase my CRF 300 out to be my street bike which if necessary in a pinch could handle some off-road riding but not much!!!
PS Is this how you buy your cars? You read up on them watch a video then say I don’t need to test drive them I know which car is best without thoroughly investigating it as well as test driving it? If so I suspect you’ve wasted tens upon tens of thousands of dollars in your adult life!!
Apples are not oranges. Mangoes are not strawberries and peaches are not pineapples I just thought you’d like to know this since some of them are tropical fruits and others are temperate fruits. I would hate for you to put out a video telling everyone since their fruit they’re all the same they taste the same they work the same except for the pineapples which is harder to peel so don’t eat it!!!
I apologize if I was a bit salty or came across as arrogant supercilious narcissistic or rude. However as someone who owns both of these bikes +2 others as mentioned I cannot let your disinformation stand it must be refuted it must be rebuffed if necessary next time I will post specific thickness measurements on the frames between the CRF 450 L the CRF 300 L and the Yamaha WR250R. Happy trails- as long as you were not on a CRF 300 out otherwise you risk breaking the frame---as do we all.

The 2021 450 is called the RL not L. And the 291 pounds is in fact a curb weight. That means full of fuel and fluids and ready to ride. If you are not that serious about hard off road riding, than the 300l would be okay. The maintenance intervals on the 450RL are nothing to worry about. Several guys have already put 20k miles on that engine without so much as a valve adjustment. As far as performance between the two, there is no comparison.

Ended up trading the 250L in for the 450RL because I couldn’t resist the power. My thoughts have been the 300 will be better for woods/single track and if I had to sell one it’d be the 450 but lately I’ve been doubting that a little. Ideally like to keep both and set one up for more highway use and one for the woods. Guess we’ll see if the 300 ever makes it. ✌🏽

It was really hard to get offroad tires for the CRF 250L, I don't know if they changed the tire size but the common tire size for dirt bikes is 120/90 and 140/80. CRF 250L used 120/80, anything bigger and you scratched your exhaust (so it wasn't just a matter of police being strict with the tire sizes - anyway, if they are strict in your country, the front tire's dimensions were in inches, those tires are practically non-existent, luckily common 90/90 or 80/100 fit well).
In my opinion, 450 was intended as a true enduro bike, a competitor to EXC-F 500 or WR 450F. 250 was not. In the end, I decided an adventure bike was more than good enough (the only downsides are the price and weight) for dirt roads or wide simple trails while being able to travel far (unlike CRF 250L) and for anything more complicated, a true enduro or XC dirt bike was more appropriate.
Ultimately, I think if anyone wants to know which bike to get, they should first think what do they want from it, those are two different bikes for two different purposes.

300l- ~$6000 OTD price. Must upgrades include handlebars, hand guards, and eventually suspension.
Slightly used 450l with possible upgrades ~$8500.
Now ask if it’s worth $2500 for a race pedigree bike that is more difficult to out grow.
To me it was worth the money. Suspension alone would be $1000 making 300l within $1500 of a used 450l.
My 450l had 80 miles so hardly used.

I wish I waited for the 300l before riding a 250l and I would've been absolutely stoked.. the suspension is okay for road and trails with some roughness to them but that's not what it's made for.. it's a dual sport not an enduro or racing bike, for what it is.. it does an absolutely fantastic job and for the price.

Only thing "better" is the price. Obviously the 450 is higher spec/quality and weighs LESS....has more power...nice de-tuned usable power. SO the traditional argument of a 250 being a better trail bike than a 500 DIRTBIKE (as in full spec MX bikes) does NOT hold up here the same way! A full dirt spec 500mx bike putting down 50+ horse power is a total exhausting HANDFUL compared to the 250 DIRT bike...so that is a GOOD argument but one that evaporates in the case of 450RL vs 300L hondas....the 300 is a CHEAPER built (heavier) econo bike....so it is comparing apples and oranges I have to say....BUT if you need fuel economy and cant afford the 10k dollar price of the 450? well the 300 be fine.....less bike but fine....I would also think the 300 may require a tad less maintaince and vibrate less so there is that but as for being better overall?....I vote no way!

    • @nigelwolfe6150
      @nigelwolfe6150 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

btw for a LOT of guys the difference in price is a non issue....It is only an issue for those on a budget, But what I have seen over the years is a LOT of guys spending less initially and THEN dumping copious coin into their new bike TRYING to bring it up to a higher level of performance.....and frankly a bunch of folks would have little trouble spending every dime of the original savings in price....you start adding up aftermarket improvements and it just is not that hard at all....Just attempting to bring the suspension up to par on an econobox japanese bike can cost a bloody fortune and/or turn into a nightmare if one tries to say transplant forks off an MX bike etc....Me? I'd just pop for the 450 to start with...there is a real good reason Honda changed the designation of the 450 for 2021 correcting a real oversight.....now it is actually CRF450RL"....NOT just 450L....Because it IS an R modified to be street legal etc as opposed to the 300L,,,which I assume is NOT based on the 250R ....IF it WERE? My argument would be seriously Full of Sh#t flawed but then again the PRICE could no longer be thousands less either!....the price would be about the difference between a 250 and 450 motocross bikes of same generation....meaning nearly identical for all intents and purposes unless the 450 was unchnged for a few model year and the 250 was revamped every year.....THEN? the 450 would be significantly cheaper as has been the case with various brands over the years..

    1. Great 👍 price
    2. Great 👍 suspension ( Sach )

A little late to this convo but I'll add my thoughts. I have both bikes, the 450L for about a year and half and just recently bought a 2024 300L. These two bikes really should not be considered in the same category as 450L is an aggressive power monster and quite scary sometimes and the 300L is in no way anxiety inducing.
Unless someone is just naturally good at riding motorcycles I would not suggest the 450L for any beginner, it still gives me the heebee jeebees and I've been on it a lot. I change oil about every 800-1200 miles, oil always looks fine. I change filters often. Changing oil is a 10 minute job, trivial in fact. With the mods I've done over time it's quite a bit more powerful then stock, and sometimes that's a big disadvantage for me. Plus it has a super strong sub-frame you can put a lot of weight on if you want to BDR, etc.
The 300L on the other hand is very beginner friendly and I have to say even for me is very fun and comfortable. And the more I ride it the more I look forward to riding it! :D I live in the high desert next to the Cascades and it has performed great in rocky sand and high mountain rugged stuff, albeit much slower then the 450L. Oh yeah, and still completely stock. I just received the Acerbis 3.6 gal tank so that will add even more ride time and I will have to deal with the suspension at some point but now it's fine.
To finish, and aggressive rider, or one who likes aggressive power, will love the 450L. It doesn't like slow, technical single-track, but will demolish anything else. The 300L is perfect for someone who likes more casual riding and wants to get adventurous from time to time. I enjoy just cruising around back roads and exploring trails without fear of getting into trouble! 😄

You are sorely mistaken on a LOT of your information! Which KTM dual sport has 60 H.p.? Certainly the 500 EXC doesn't. Check out Cycle World's dyno chart. The CRF450L made 38.21 and the 500 EXC-F makes 41! Sorry. The 300L makes under 24 hp. Also, Dirt Bike Magazine in their most recent test said the 450L has the best suspension of any dual sport bike! It'd take several thousand dollars to even get close to the 450L on the 300L. If you look at the frames, there are huge differences. You are buying something for the extra cash with the CRF450L. It is really a bargain. It is for a totally different Rider than the 300L. The 300L is for junior Riders. It struggles on the hwy. The 450 does not! The 300L has very soft and basic suspension. It'll work on the road, but will be dangerous off road, at any speed. Your comparison is biased and false. Sorry Dude, try again!

From what I have seen is that the CRF 300 L is much better off road unless you want to race, For what I will be doing and most will be doing the 300 L hands down off road. Plane and simple the 450 is not good on the slower rides it needs to go fast, faster than most people want to do the gnarly stuff. I would go with the 300L off road and if want a 50/50 bike go with the DR 650 it is also great off road but 60 lbs heaver than the 300 L And for true 50/50 riding you need a 20 liter gas tank on the DR 650 other wise you are always looking for gas. I would think that might also be a problem with the 300 L as a 50/50 bike if you are going to do long rides. But for a straight off road the 300 L as most of the time you will be doing under 200 Km rides.

Well, how quickly 300L can accelerate from 70 to 90 mph on a freeway comparing to 450? Sometimes it's crucial. The weight difference is minimal and the price... The price is subjective :) My vote is for 450! I ride WR450F and can compare it with my daughter's CRF230. Night and day.

I had a Wr250r and sold it when I got my 450L. The 450L does everything better. I bought mine used for a great deal. As far as maintenance I don't know of anyone doing 8000 mile oil changes on 250Ls . I believe the 450l can be run a good bit longer than 600 miles between oil changes. Some guys are doing 1000 mile changes. The 250 holds .4 quarts more than the 450.
I am not bashing the 250s they are great bikes for the money.

From what I've gathered while Honda has an inferior suspension, the engine is much better and Gets much more powerfull as u warm it up. The electronics are also better on Honda (There's not much of them but theyre there, the screen is much more visible)
Here are the numbers i gathered
      26.3 hp@8,106RPM 27.97 Nm@6,119 RPM for CRF300L on Run 5
(on Run 10 peak power is 29 HP and 28.4 NM)
      22.96 hp@8,036 RPM 20,5 Nm@7,731 RPM for KLX300
(Idk what Run is that, its the only result that has been posted, measured by a guy who has KLX250 and KLX351 as well)
I rly dunno how it's possible, dont ask me
Its all probably depends on measuring methods so i will include CBR300R dyno results as well which are
      27 HP@8,400 RPM and 25.4 Nm@6,700 RPM
If the numbers are anything to go by, we can assume that CRF engine is much superior to the KLX's
But the power delivery on the CRF is much more linear
KLX is punchier Above 7k RPM but is dumpened by the Euro5 restrictions after that point and there's no MAP to fix that atm (same with KLX250 tho)
So overall CRF is a better value i guess

Having a channel doesn’t make you qualified to rate motorcycles. I’ve been riding since 1974 and I only talk about bikes I’ve owned or currently own and ride on and off road. So you can have the last laugh ha ha Ha. However the CRF300L is not better than the CRF450L, WR250R, or a Husqvarna FE350! What the CRF300L is CRF250L 2.0 a big fat disappointment!! It’s too heavy and it just doesn’t handle well compared to the above mentioned bikes. As for my book? Well I don’t feel the need to spend my time making a TH-cam channel. Having a TH-cam channel does not make anybody an expert! I was sharing thoughts about the bikes I’ve owned and currently own compared to a motorcycle you were rating which you’ve never seen or ridden. I’m not that guy. I am your age but I’m about 80 pounds lighter than you are. I weigh what I did in college 5 10 @ 155lbs and in my 50’s. I’ve owned every single bike I listed. I’m very very disappointed and unimpressed with Honda except their CRF 450 L. You can poke fun if you want but you’re a middle-aged man like me, who unlike me is obese. I have a CRF300L sitting in my garage right now. I can share with you my impressions and feelings about it but you obviously don’t want to hear them so I’m not going to bother. I’ve ridden my CRF300L and been so underwhelmed by it I’m planning to sell it. Now who’s more qualified to rate it? You accuse me of being a rude jerk after I tried to share my experience- which if you think it’s a book, this tells me your educational level. Plus if this bothers you maybe you shouldn’t have a channel. This is the last time I’m talking to you. You’re not an expert just because you have a channel. Lose some weight and learn to ride. I don’t claim to be an expert either!! However, I don’t talk about or comment on motorcycles which I’ve never seen or ridden as if I’m an expert about said motorcycle. The expert is Graham Jarvis! Goodbye and thanks for the laughs!

The channel has nothing to do with qualification to talk about a motorcycle and you do not have to own one to know about it! With someone who has supposedly been on 2 wheels for 46 years makes me wonder is it real? Not my place to judge you, I have many resources that pretty much agree with my assessments of motorcycles, I would never listen to a comment from someone who I know nothing about. Last laugh nothing is even funny and your bike comparisons are not even remotely right as the FE350 would smoke all the bike you have listed and better all around but yet not better than many and thats a fact. good day to you sir
