  • Vivaldi's Concerto for solo baroque violin and strings in F Minor, "Winter" (L'Inverno, RV 297), performed by Cynthia Miller Freivogel and the Early Music ensemble Voices of Music, with an animated graphical score.
Q: Where can I learn more about the ensemble?
    A: Here:
    www.voicesofmusic.org/
Q: Where can I get this recording?
A: You can get the recording from Soundcloud ...
    / vivaldi-winter-complet...
... and you can watch Voices of Music perform it on TH-cam ...
    • Vivaldi Four Seasons: ...
Q: What do the colors mean?
A: Colors are assigned according to pitch, in a system I call "harmonic coloring" (since it shows changes in harmonies). You can read more about this here:
    www.musanim.com/HarmonicColoring/
In this video, blue is assigned to the F for the first and last movements and E-flat for the middle movement.
Q: Why is the pitch one-half step flat?
A: The music is being performed at "Baroque pitch." To learn more about this, see ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_(...
Q: I appreciate the animated graphical scores you make; how can I help?
A: There are many ways you can support my work:

Vivaldi was on another level when he wrote this.

    • @mauriciocr159

Funny story about it it's that actually Vivaldi made some notations on the original score of all the Season pieces. He was trying to translate the seasons from his perspective, trying to tell a story through the music, so each section of the score includes a "description" of how the piece it's supposed to be played AND listened. For example, the first part describes something like "shivers in the cold", when everyone comes together says something like "fell down on my butt and rolling down on snow", on 2nd movemente it's like "staying inside reading white dropplets of rain smashes the window, laughing of people outside on the storm" and things like that. He always made fun of bad things happening to other people. On Autumn he even describes one section as "being drunk and falling on my butt".

No, he wasn't. He was doing the standard techniques of musical text painting for his day. It's really well done, but it was just par for course. Wanna really hear him go? Try "La tempsta di mare, " Storm at Sea. " That's very cool.

The final movement along with the animations was phenomenal! The animation style gave so much power and life that the music itself was the animation, and the animation became the music. The way the threads back off when the dynamic decreases and spikes during the final movement is powerful. You've done an amazing job on this animation! That was stunning. It was like rediscovering your videos, because the thrill it gave me the first time I watched your animations was great, but the level of emotion that was produced through this animation was something entirely new and even more intense than ever before. I can only imagine what Rite of Spring would be like if you revisited that piece (I'm not saying you should, just that I can imagine it being even more impressive than the first time.). Job well done to you

Long story short: this video is great in multiple ways.
First off, the colouring is brilliant. It adds so much depth to the visualization when we are able to see not only the notes but also the harmonics. And it's good the several melodies are told apart otherwise.
The blurrines of the first movement bothered my eyes a bit but it's not too bad. It seems to accentuate (visually) the solo parts of the violin as they are less blurred. Or that's what came to my mind.
In the 2nd movement, the violin in a different layer is an insightful solution: It both distinguishes it from the graphics of the other insturments and - as I think - represents the independence and/or the leading role of the melody.
And, of course, the last movement is just fantastic. Should I even mention how well it visualizes the energy and the motion of the music.
Congratulations for anyone who cared to read through all this massive analysis. :D

Actually, I didn't exactly "choose" the colors. The colors are assigned according to a system (a system which many people have invented independently). So, I chose to use the system, but within that system, the colors are completely determined by the music. (See the FAQ for more about this.)

    • @smalin
      @smalin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ah, okay, I understand the question. Yes, there are theories of vision which predict the perceived difference between hues. I didn't use them, though --- I just picked pure hues for blue, red, and green, and adjusted the hues in between until the differences seemed about equal.

Awesome, as usual. But a suggestion, perhaps, with respect to the 'needle and thread' effect in the third movement: perhaps instead of alternating upwards and downwards arcs, like it seems to, instead configure the arc direction based on whether the next note is higher or lower?

KooriShukuen I personally like it this way because it gives the line momentum, it acts like a pendulum oscillating up and down.

The "needle and thread" effect (SplineRibbon renderer, see www.musanim.com/renderers/) uses a cubic spline, which gives the smoothest path between notes. I've experimented with other methods of going between the notes (see www.musanim.com/bwv1007m1/ and www.musanim.com/vring/). If you draw some notes on a piece of paper and try to connect them in a way that matches your intuition, and then try to describe what you're doing algorithmically/mathematically, you will find that it's a very complicated subject.

I thought the needle and thread really captured the feeling of the music at that point.

Do you plan to complete the "quradilogy"? Also do you like 4 seasons if so [and this is just being picky] which are your 3 top movements from your favourite season, or do you find them annoying?
