  • Stitched together from a few videos found on TH-cam. Can Phil survive The Wall's deadly game? Or will he spend an eternity of suffering digitized in the CD-i?
Audio is quite low due to some issues with the source videos. Just a heads up.

This is one infomercial I didn't mind watching up at 4 am nothing else on. Nostalgic memories... The best times. Simple times.

    Kid: Dad is this hell?
Phil: No Phil Jr. it's Zelda on CDi all though I can't imagine hell being much worse

Made it really far in Link the faces of evil.. then there was some level which all humans got stuck on and it became the most annoying game.

So I bit the bullet and bought into the hype and paid about $900 for my model 910 in 1991…. Had tons of fun with it….still works but had to perform the timekeeper battery hack….and replace drawer belt….oh and spent the $249 for the FMV cartridge. Then at one point spend $100 of the Comptons Encyclopedia thinking my daughter would get tons of use out of that….hahah…silly me. Still have all that software and tons more I bought off of eBay through the years.Took me forever to Find the Discover Fishing cdi thinking it was a fishing game when it wasn’t a game at all….more like a fishing video magazine.

My mom ended up buying the 450 model (that's the CD-i that looks like a traditional gaming console with the flip top and came with the Sega Genesis looking CD-i controller) around 1994. It came with Burn Cycle and I ended up getting several of the better video games released for the CD-i like the Apprentice (it's a platformer), Mutant Rampage: Bodyslam (it's a beat 'em up), the 7th Guest (it's a first person adventure, HORROR, puzzle game), Voyeur (a very mature FMV game) and several other games. It still works, but the timekeeper battery is dead (but the 450 CD-i console still works perfectly and it saves as long as the console is on. But once you shut off the console then it erases what was saved. It's been like that since 2010. I'm too intimidated to change that time keeper chip since it's complicated). I also have the FMV cartridge (it came with the 450 model my mom bought) and several of the CD-i movies... 22 of them (my favorite film on the CD-i format is Apocalypse Now).

Glad someone out there enjoyed their system. when it was new. In many ways it was a precursor to the all in one consoles we started seeing circa the 2000's.

This infomercial used to play after the SatAM lineup (Sonic, Mr Bumpy, Reboot... all those glorious cartoons). The tennis game intrigued me, so did Faces of Evil.. it was just fun to watch this back then. It was an attempt to turn the PC into a console. There was nothing really wrong with the CDi format. The hardware was the problem. Needlessly expensive (I'm almost convinced they got the short end of the deal or got ripped off by hardware vendors like the CPU supplier) and they didn't care at all for the low quality product that was the result... and they wanted to make as much money back as possible. Developers knew the hardware wasn't there, so not very many went on board.

They certainly made video calling seem so common place at the time , I was in the 4th grade , and still remember all phone calls in the 80s being much more visual than they are now , even if the graphic format was in adjectives that had to be manually downloaded from a paper dictionary.
That particular time slot was filled the following day with L Ron Hubard dianetic book series , and then Muzzy after that , a predecessor to Rosetta Stone , I remember thinking back on all that early morning programming right before the World Trade Center demolition , when the only thing tolerable to have on the screen while people were waking up to go to work was “girls gone wild” and blue pill advertisements , and how that generation was going to be more of a hinderance than the previous. It was about 10 years since this CDI thing, before I was able to use any of that software , by dialing in the 800 number for AOL and waiting for it to start bingscreeching then clicking the program to dial whatever 20cent a minute long distance number was allowed , after it was already connecting to the free one, prodigy and Netscape navigator were better tho , I eventually called up for the AOL for dos diskette and only used there services to download whatever people left on there , it’s all the interactivity I can do without , I have an oculus quest 2 now , and can’t understand why people think more about multiplayer and communicating over design study and exploration . I bought stamps a few days ago and had to learn to draw a long time ago out of necessity , but if I ever got my hands on a printer that didn’t end up getting stomped to pieces after a few months of trying to get it to work , I’d rather interact that way

so for the Philips CD-i commercial "Phil" is the main character? I feel manipulated...

I think the intention was cool. "Multimedia" was indeed pretty exciting. the CD-i, sadly, wasn't the best system to introduce it. PCs were still the best way to get people's attention, but they were prohibitively expensive at the time

Exactly. Even at its steep release price of $599 the CDi was comparable to budget computers like the Amiga 1200. (The Mac had just broken $1,000.) It was also considerably easier to use than a full computer, with a handy remote control rather than that _LOAD “*”,8,1_ stuff.
