  • Hey everybody! Here's another CRT Spotlight for you, featuring this lovely Sony KV-1207 that I regularly use for a lot of my video consumption of stuff hailing from the 1980s. Obviously being that this television itself was built in 1982 and has the aesthetics to match, it certainly makes for a wonderful display for old movies on VHS and RF-only game consoles.
    Unlike many of the televisions in my storage rack that I only power up from time to time, this Trinitron is one of my regularly used TVs and sits across from my comfy chair in the game room (check it out, I'm running a dual screen setup!).
    Based on the amount of new interest I received on my last CRT Spotlight video, I figured this easily will become a regular featured series on my channel here. After all, I certainly own enough CRTs to keep new videos on this topic coming for quite some time! But of course, I appreciate all of your kind feedback and hopefully I'll have a good variety of new content posted for you soon. In the meantime, enjoy!

    I had this Sony in 83. Fantastic picture. Got this instead of a Commodore 1702 for a C64 and TV duty. Served me well for about 10 years. Wish I still had it honestly. Perfect for consoles as you have noted.

    WOW! Make me feel old! Had one new in college around that time, maybe 1983. I knew then that Sony was the only way to go. It was in a college dorm room, then follows me around for years when I was in the military, mostly as a secondary TV. It was a very good television receiver. I will say, since this model was not "cable" ready, it was set pretty much to channel 3 and then changed channels via the cable converter box that if I remember correctly a maximum of 36 channels available.

      I do have one Zenith! You might be able to make it out in some of the clips with the rack in the background, it's the woodgrain set on the very bottom.
      I absolutely intend to do a video on it in the future, it's a really neat TV.

    At a fle market a year back I found an 83 13" Sony Trinitron model KV1331 in great cosmetic and working condition. The TV was very low hour set so it still has a great picture. I did replace all of the electrolytic caps as I had one fail short in another Sony Trinitron which was a little bit newer and took out the flyback transformer.

      I've been pretty lucky with most of the 80s Sony sets that have passed through my hands over the years, of course as they age I'm fully set up to replace the capacitors but it's a project saved for when I actually need to do it.
      Surprisingly enough I tend to have more geometry issues due to aging caps on my late 90s/early 2000s Trinitrons!

    I would love to have that tv to play Atari and other 2nd gen games on. I would really enjoy seeing a video spotlight for that Vectrex. I love your channel and can't wait to see more videos.

      I've got some cool ideas for videos on the Vectrex, I definitely have a lot of history with the console so it should make for some great content for sure!

    I've always said 8"-13" are the best sizes for retro gaming on a crt. They hide imperfections well and the pixels are more dense giving you a sharper picture. A CRT that his big or huge size shows ugly scan lines and is just stretching out a low resolution picture. Trinitrons are the only TVs that looked decent in big sizes imo.

    • @StevesAssortedStuff
      @StevesAssortedStuff  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed, which is part of the reason why the vast majority of CRTs in my collection are 20" and under. There's also the added benefits of a smaller screen hiding imperfections with the tube itself. In personal experience, the more you increase the screen size the more you run into issues with geometry, convergence, and other factors that can warp the image.
      That said, a healthy large tube being fed signals from good cables can look good though. I really lucked out with my KV-32FV27, the image can produce has to be one of the best I've ever seen on a large tube. A Genesis running HD Retrovision cables on it looks absolutely stunning.

    Love the genuine appreciation for the hardware. I'm the same with my consoles, I haven't modded any of them, if the jail bars are there it belongs there, I love'em. Great channel, subbed liked, commented and shared!

      Thank you for the kind words! Yeah I strongly prefer to keep my hardware stock. I have so many other options if I really wanted to see something pixel-perfect, it's seeing the imperfections and idiosyncrasies that really makes me enjoy the thing I'm gaming/watching content on.
      For instance I've refused to install a Buzz Off kit in either of my Vectrex consoles simply because I love the buzz! It's part of the experience!

    Old Atari games hold up so much better on these old TVs since the pixels actually glow, it’s almost trippy in a way. This is something even with a good 4k upscaler you can’t get on modern OLEDS.

      @StevesAssortedStuff  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I LOVE seeing phosphor glow, I get it that this was something that manufacturers wanted to eliminate as much as they could but seeing the light bloom around bright objects on the screen just makes the image feel more alive.
      In particular, if you ever get the chance to play a Vectrex in a room with all the lights off, it is simply a magical experience. It's cool enough in a well lit room but the vectors on that CRT look incredible with the lights off.

    I just bought a 1982 sony kv-2648r floor model at auction..I am having a hard time finding any info about it..the tv looks like it was just pulled out of its original box for the first time..not a spot of dust inside or out, not a single cobweb, not a single scratch..how do you price a 42 year old brand new tv?🤔
