- Bodysuits let actors go through physical transformations that they couldn’t easily make on their own, from gaining weight to gaining muscle to being pregnant. Bodysuits don’t have to look very realistic if they are covered by clothes, but if the actor’s stomach or chest is exposed, then they will have to trick the viewers. For “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” legendary special makeup effects artist Kevin Yagher of Kevin Yagher Productions Inc. created muscle and fat suits for actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. To make the muscle suits look real, Yagher and his team sculpted subtle veins and used an airbrush to paint on skin details like pores. They used silicone for the skin, as the material is translucent the same way human skin is, and foam latex underneath to help it move like a real body. Meanwhile, a realistic fat suit needs some jiggle to it. After working on the Nicolas Cage movie “Adaptation,” Yagher learned that stuffing a fake paunch with beads is the best way to make it bounce.

So much goes into movies. The most talented, creative people don’t even get much credit.
Yup. Actors are overrated.
Most movies now are done more than 60% in VFX and that's what takes the most time, including editing. Those people are nameless, faceless, nerds as far as the production company is concerned.
Actually they do get the credit, but they are mostly famous in the industry, not in the media.
Their better credit lets them get better projects, just people not related to the industry do not see them in the media and think they are not credited properly.
This stuff happens in almost all of the different industries be it entertainment, tech, construction etc.
P.S. not trying to be a correcting asshole, just wanted to share some knowledge from experience.

All that hard work for just a 2-3 minutes scene, that’s incredible.
It is strange to think about, but the movie is 93 minutes long and has grossed $32million (as of a report I found dated Oct. 1st). That would mean that 3 minutes is worth (32,000,000/93)*3= $1,032,258 if you attribute every minute to having an equal value to the outcome of the movie.
It's more likely that the entertainment value of those special effects have a greater weight in the distribution though, so even if they spent $3,000,000 of their $25,000,000 budget creating the scenes they could probably justify the costs.

They dont do it for muscle. They usually do it for people that are fat in their roles but aren't really fat. Or have tattoos an shit that they clearly aren't real tats. Most people do get in good shape for roles that require them too

As someone who does this for a living, thank you! Videos like this tend to only feature the shop owner and make it seem as if they do a lot of the work, when the reality is they have a whole team of very skilled people doing 99% of it. (not that Kevin isn't a good guy)

I had to wear a fat body suit before for the Walking Dead. The complete makeup application process took 5 hours. I’m naturally skinny but wearing that fat suit and watching my transformation was a joy! The makeup crew of that series are some of the greatest talented artist and people I have ever had the pleasure of working with on a set.

His dedication is awesome but I hope he and others stop it can be very detrimental to their health. Matt Damon had problems for a while after dropping 40lbs rapidly for Courage Under Fire. DDL probably the only more famous actor than Bale in terms of preparation and commitment has well known stories. For My Left Foot he refused to leave the wheelchair and crew had to lift him over the cables and shit everyday but he broke a few ribs because of the way he would refuse to act normal. It's like he really became a paraplegic. In Gangs Of New York he got pneumonia because he refused to wear a modern coat just because it wasn't right with the time period.... we're talking not even wearing it between takes when it doesn't matter what period it's from. For "In The Name Of The Father" he spent 2-3 days/nights in jail without food or water then had real specialized officers interrogate him for 9hrs straight. That's considered torture if they'd have done that to a real inmate.
Fun fact he also said during Gangs/New York he'd listen to Eminem "The Way I Am" which I find hilarious for that character AND the fact he would catch pneumonia for not wearing a jacket because it wasn't with the time yet would listen to a song in a genre that wouldn't come along for many many decades.

That was excellent dude, I've been wearing one of his fat suits since I was about 16, sometimes I wear a not so fat suit but invariably I put on a larger & larger one but now I've decided that this time two years from now I won't wear one anymore, my current fat suit weighs 120lbs, :-(

Kevin is one of the most amazing effects artists out there. but you got to remember he has 50 to 100 of other people working on these projects. And I'm sure, Mr. Yagher would be the first to tell you that this is a collaboration of dozens and dozens of artists.

As skilled as the makeup artists are, I’m surprised they used a single piece body suit. It’s clear they can’t raise their arms all the way. The arms, chest, and abs should be separate pieces.
Muscles are separate and held together by fascia. The fascia doesn’t get any bigger so that’s what creates the creases but also allows mobility. Anywhere there is a crease in the muscle there can be a separate prosthetic. But especially around joints or areas that move a lot like between the underarm and chest
I’m so glad they did special effects for the body suits instead of going with CGI. As someone who grew up loving special effects makeup I am super excited to see that movies are still going with the classic art 👍

Huh. I am now question everything.
This was the industry I was trying to get into post graduate , my older sister went into vfx . Unfortunately I got sick shortly after school and all those years of sculpting and special fx makeup went to waste :( today I’m just permanently disabled and stuck in bed with a cast currently . I got to meet paul Jones a few years ago at fan expo he had worked with my sister on a few things and made her a set of gills to go with a gender swapped aquaman cosplay . It was a high pain day so I spent most of it sitting at Paul’s table and warning people not to touch the dog suits from resident evil because that blood never dries it’s like a jelly lol
It's totally crazy but I had nearly the exact thing happened to my life...Also just like you I'm disabled full time and for life because theirs no cure for the two major conditions I have...which also just like you involve me being in constant pain and having to take some pretty horrible medicine.
The only major difference is that I ended up this way because of a single doctors careless mistake during what was supposed to be a outpatient minor surgical injection.
Also my passion and God given talent was as a professional singer songwriter. Before my life was stolen from me I did manage to release one full album which did really well and even got me some radio play and a full interview and performance on Good Morning AZ as well as some other awesome experiences.
Anyway sorry for the long text but just wanted to share so you know your not alone. And also to tell you that Jesus Christ loves you and specializes in helping individuals that have been dealt with an unjust hand like we were .

If you were talking about me being in a cast I broke my ankle at the end of august and had surgery in September so I’m a cyborg now lol , also the cast has been off for a bit over 2 weeks now and I’m walking on my new partially metal ankle it hurts there’s a lot of numbness still around the surgical sites but I’ll live I’m just walking like Frankenstein’s monster currently lol

Those suits are so much work. They never showed the positive being made then the sculptors creating the muscles and details out of clay on top of it and then creating a new negative silicon mould, then the final suit out of silicon using the star's body cast and the new muscle negative cast . I wish a lot of screen writers would be so detail oriented.
